Hi Friends,

I hope you are all well and that you had a nice celebration on the
International Day of Persons with Disabilities which was on last
Thursday.

Friends, I am undergoing research on reserved quota for persons with
disabilities in public service jobs in India. Can you please help me
out to trace the latest legal amendments on the subject?

Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Aarthi

With a view to empower persons with disabilities and inclusion of
disability issues into the sustainable development agenda in Member States,
UNESCO, in close cooperation with international, regional and national
partners, is organizing an international conference entitled “From
Exclusion to Empowerment: The Role of Information and Communication
Technologies for Persons with Disabilities” in New Delhi, India from 24 to
26 November 2014.
The major objective of the event is to promote the human rights and
fundamental freedoms of persons with disabilities and to encourage all
stakeholders to take concrete measures for the empowerment of persons with
disabilities through the effective application of ICTs.

As recognized by the UNCRPD, women and girls are often at greater risk,
both within and outside of home for violence, injury, abuse, neglect or
negligent treatment, maltreatment and exploitation. It is, therefore,
crucial to integrate gender equality in all efforts to promote the full
enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms by persons with
disabilities, including in the current Conference.

The International Conference programme of three days, consists of plenary
sessions and panel discussions (International conference), a film festival
– ‘We Care’ –film screenings and the exhibition on innovative ICT solutions
as well as one or several workshops for pre-selected participants and media
and supporting events.

Major organizers of the international event:

UNESCO in co-operation
with the Government of India,

Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment,
Department of Disability Affairs

and Ministry of Human Resource Development,
Department of University and Higher Education
and Indian National Commission
for Cooperation with UNESCO

In close partnership with Brotherhood,
We Care Filmfest, United Nations Information
Centre for India and Bhutan

Participants:

More than 500 international, regional and national participants are
expected from around the world, including:

• High-level representatives of the Government of India;
• Representatives of Ministries and Departments of Education, Information
and Communications, Social Affairs and Health, Women and Child Development;
• Policy and decision makers, international organization representatives;
• Disabled peoples’ organizations, civil society and teacher training
institutes;
• Representatives of ICT, media and film industry;
• Information and media professionals and other stakeholders.

Working Language of the event is English.

fundamental freedoms of persons with disabilities and to encourage all
stakeholders to take concrete measures for the empowerment of persons with
disabilities through the effective application of ICTs.

 - 'We Care' -film screenings and the exhibition on innovative ICT solutions
as well as one or several workshops for pre-selected participants and media
 and supporting events.

Major organizers of the international event:

 UNESCO in co-operation
 with the Government of India,

Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment,
 Department of Disability Affairs

and Ministry of Human Resource Development,
Department of University and Higher Education
 and Indian National Commission
 for Cooperation with UNESCO

 In close partnership with Brotherhood,
We Care Filmfest, United Nations Information
 Centre for India and Bhutan

 Participants:

More than 500 international, regional and national participants are
expected from around the world, including:

 * High-level representatives of the Government of India;
 * Representatives of Ministries and Departments of Education, Information
 and Communications, Social Affairs and Health, Women and Child Development;
 * Policy and decision makers, international organization representatives;
 * Disabled peoples' organizations, civil society and teacher training
 institutes;
 * Representatives of ICT, media and film industry;
 * Information and media professionals and other stakeholders.

Working Language of the event is English.

that table must be the non uniform table. means cells are merged for inner
columns. to navigate to the respective columns you can try the following
keystrokes:

alt+ctrl+right arrow to move to next column and left arrow for previous.
Alt+ctrl+down arrow to move to next row and up arrow for previous. for
merged cells, just assume that two rows would be used for columns title if
that table contains iner columns. and just navigate down to that merged row

Sorry for my late reply. I am checking my email inbox only now.

Thank you all for your word of encouragement.

Avinash: I attended the Disability Business Forum only on the first
day. I left early, that is, just after the opening part. I was not
there when Mr. Abidi intervened. I met him on Thursday 18th September
for DPO Mauritius. There was a polemic in the press about an issue
concerning DPI and DPO Mauritius.

The Civic Leadership course I followed focused on leadership in NGO
sector and leadership in civic rights organisations. The qualities of
a good leadership was laid emphasis on.

Dear All,

Greetings from Mauritius. I hope that you are all well.

I am back in Mauritius from the US since 2nd August. Some major events
took place since my return. I am now the acting Chairperson of DPO
Mauritius. There was a Disability Business Forum held on 15-16
September 2014 in Mauritius whereby Mr. Javed Abidi was in Mauritius.
In fact he is leaving Mauritius today.

Coming back to my participation in the Young African Leaders
Initiative: it has been a tremendously enriching experience. I had 6
weeks of course on Civic Leadership at Rutgers University, New Jersey.
I experienced an inclusive society for 7 weeks in the US. I was in
Washington DC during the 7th week. I met with President Obama and the
First Lady. I shook hands with President Obama and hugged the First
Lady. Some days ago I have been presented a Microsoft Internship This
internship is being given to only 100 fellows on the total of 500
fellows who participated in the fellowship in the US. I have accepted
the offer and will start my internship in Microsoft Office in
Mauritius soon. I am so delighted to contribute to the welfare of my
fellow friends with visual impairment in Mauritius.

Hope you all prosperity and good luck in your endeavor,

Aarthi Burtony

home country is paid for as well as our expenses including meals on
university campus. I will stay in the appartment on the university
campus. The Mauritian delegation is made of 5 Mauritians one person
from Rodrigues Island and 4 persons from the Seychelles. I am the only
person with a disability in the Mauritian delegation.

What is more interestingly fabulous is that all the 500 YALi
participants will spend 3 days in Washington DC to attend a 3 days
seminar presided by President Obama himself! 20 universities have
volunteered to participate in this program. Each Mauritian participant
is in a different university. We will be in classes of 25 students
from other African countries.

I am leaving Mauritius to undergo this wonderful adventure next week.
I am proud that at least one blind person forms part of the Mauritian
delegation.

It is the good news I wanted to share with you.

Cheers,

Aarthi Burtony

Hello fellow friends,

First of all, let me congratulate you all for the election of Mr.
Narendra Moodi as the head of the New Indian Government.

I am pleased to inform you of my selection to participate in the
Washington Fellowship Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) 2014.
The Washington Fellowship YALI is a program of President Obama which
aims to have 500 young African Leaders in the US to attend an exchange
study program of 6 weeks in 3 diffield. The 3 fields include public
management, business entrepreneurship and civic leadership.
Application for the Fellowship was opened in January 2014. I applied
for the Fellowship and I have been selected after having attended an
interview when being selected as semi finalist. I will attend 6 weeks
of Civic Leadership course at Rutgers University, the State University
of New Jersey. Our flight from Mauritius to the US and back to our
home country is paid for as well as our expenses including meals on
university campus.

Re: [AI] Aarthi Burtony: from Mauritius.

2011-04-22 Thread Pranav Lal
Hello Aarthi,

All you really need is a computer that is equipped with a suitable screen
reader. If your job involves handling printed text, you need a scanner and
OCR. What software does the bank use for the tasks that will be assigned to
you? We will need to know whether it is accessible. If it is not, you will
need to evaluate whether the program can be made accessible via altering the
screen reader's settings or creating scripts for that program. If the
program remains inaccessible, then you need to find an alternative program
or access that information via other means.

Pranav

[AI] Aarthi Burtony: from Mauritius.

2011-04-21 Thread Aarthi Burthony
Hello accessindians.

I am Aarthi. I am a blind Mauritian girl of 24 years old. I became
blind at the age of 14 as a result of the glaucoma disease from which
I suffer since birth.

When I lost my sight ten years ago: I attended a school for the blind
where I learned Braille. I can read and write bothFrench and English
Braille Grade 2. I pursued my studies as a blind person with the
Braille system. I used both Braille transcription and soft copy texts.
I am computer literate as Ifollowed an IT course at the
NationalComputer Board of Mauritius. I did my tertiary studies at the
University of Mauritius. I am an Llb holder.

I am now looking for permanent suitable employment. It is very
difficult as even the authorities in the person of the Ministry of
Social Security has no idea of what structure and facilities must be
arranged for a blind employee doing administrative tasks. Most blind
people in Mauritius are employed as receptionist. I am among the few
blind people in Mauritius who has been at University.

Last week I met the Chairperson of the Development Bank of Mauritius.
The latter is analysing the possibility of awarding me a post within
the administration of the Bank. As I know Harish Kotian who is the
moderator of accessindia and who works for the Bank of India: the
Chairperson of the Development Bank of Mauritius asked me to write
down a research paper on the facilities that the Bank of India has put
in place for Harish as a blind employee of the Bank.

My request to accessindians is asfollows: can anyone of you who knows
exactly what technological support and facilities I may suggest the
Development Bank of Mauritius to provide me with: please share his or
her knowledge with me. I am in need of these information. You may
reply to my request on the mail of accessindia or to my personal email
if you feel like. My skype ID is: aburtony001 and my emial personal
address is the one on which I am actually sending this email to you. I
thank you sincerely.

Aarthi.
