Hi! After losing my side this was the first experience of casting vote! The
policeman were very inquisitive about my blindness that was the only one normal
thing in my experience apart from that it was a very smooth experience but yes
they actually allowed my mother to go with me rather than sending any of Fishel
to do it

Friends, if I can place my query in this thread, Is there any visually
impaired/blind on the AI list; who also exercised right to vote in the
very First General Elections held 1951? Can we know who was the first
blind voter of India? Will RTI fetch answers from Election Commission?

What I strongly think VI voters should anyway exercise their votes even if
transport facility is not provided to them.

Earlier when transport facility was not being provided, people with
disabilities still used to cast their votes.

In my humble opinion, it is not correct to refrain from casting the vote
just because we are unable to avail the transport or any other said
facility.

yes, giving the voting rights to people residing in other states should be
inntroduced by an online mechanism indeed.

I couldn't vote cause I'm in Bangalore and my vote was in Delhi. Poor
migrant worker, you know. In fact NRI can vote by registering online
with the Election Commission but crores of migrant workers working in
different parts of the country? no way. My friends however in Delhi
voted with ease they also availed of transportation facility provided
by the Delhi Election Commission. As per Delhi EC's own reported data

I
was asked to submit my mobile phone with someone outside as they didn't
have
facility to secure the devices.
I submited my mobile to one of my known shop keeper outside and then
again
entered to the booth. A volunteer lady asked my escort to straightaway
move
towards the booth without staying in any queue.

No offficial asked me whether I need a Braille list. Even I didn't ask
for
Braille list this time.

This entire process of exercising my vote took around 20-25 minutes as
the
polling station was just at the walking distance of 5 minutes from my
residence.

After reading so many experiences of visually impaird voters, it seems
most
of the things are nicely setteld by the Election Commition or even the
Government of India from accessibility point of view. As a result,
people
have also become more sensitised and awaken towards voters with vision
impairment.

Hi,

I too, had cast my vote yesterday and the overall experience was fine.
Now, let me tell you that on the polling booth 112 in MD Public school
in Sant Nagar Burari, at first they didn't have any knowledge on how to
assist a visually impaired person but since I was with my wife, I didn't
need much of assistance. However, when I reached on the polling booth
and asked for the candidates list, they told me that they don't have the
list in Braille and gave the printed one instead. When I told them that
I would need to report this to EC, one of the senior person came and
requested me to wait for couple of minutes and with in two minutes the
person was back with the list. Rest of the process was very smooth. Amit
ji, we were not asked to keep our mobiles away and in fact, I made a
call to my boss from right within the polling booth when they said they

Dear Arif,

PWD app was recently introduced and like other applications, this app also
may have some issues. If the concerned team does not react from that end, we
can always follow up with them. Anyways, I hope they will address the issues
in future if we apprise them about where they are lacking behind.

[AI] my voting experience

2009-05-07 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi all,

I cast my vote about an hour ago. It was a very positive experience. The
polling station was one of the schools situated at an eight minutes walk
from my house.

The moment the presiding officer saw me, she realized that I was blind and
would need special treatment. She initiated the requisite process which
involved handing me a Braille sheet and my dad, who was my escort filling
out a few forms. The Braille sheet had numbers running along its left side.
After the numbers, were the names of the candidates along with their
parties. In some places, these names wrapped to the second line. This threw
me off initially. Once I read the sheet, I was moved on to the next counter.
Here, I had to sign the voters register and produce a photo ID.
note:
I do not have a voters ID card.

I then moved on to the machine itself which was at one end of the room.
There was another officer who pressed a button and then I was told to cast
my vote. The Braille strip on the voting machine was written in a manner
that the actual numbers of the parties had to be read from top to bottom. Be
warned, this can get a little confusing. Once I had found the right number,
I moved my finger up to the requisite button and pressed it. I got a
confirmation beep and that was that.

Other notes:
1. This polling station had a voter assistance booth. This was outside the
main station. Since polling station was in the school, the booth was just
inside the main gate.
2. Mobile phones are not allowed in the actual polling area. It is best that
you leave them behind.

Pranav
