SV: Xp and Win2003 restore steps with out using BMR/ASR.
Hi! That funny! I have just spoke to Bill Boyer about this. If you know how to run a disaster recovery manualy with Windows 2000. Then you know how to run a disaster recovery on a Windows 2003. It´s the same way. But here is the steps. With Installation CD - Install Windows 200x Server with the same service pack that was before - Install the same level or newer iTSM Client - Create a new domain (Same as the old one) or Join the domain. - Boot up the server in AD Repair mode and restore the AD with iTSM. - Boot up your server in normal mode. Then restore all data. (Include the Windows Directory) /Christian Svensson -Ursprungligt meddelande- Från: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Chandrashekar, C R. Backing up MIRAPOINT appliances
Does anyone have any current experience backing up MIRAPOINT email servers/appliances ? I searched the archives and there was a brief discussion about whether TSM was or wasn't supported (seems it isn't/wasn't at the time (and TSM version available at that time)). If not via TSM, how do you back it up ? If you are doing it via TSM, how ? NDMP ? Any and all info about these devices is greatly appreciated !

Re: ESCON 3590 and Linux TSM server
This is of interest to us also. But all our hardware guy has found is this: From the TSM 5.2 Server README: * Linux - External Library Manger Support * The External Library Manger interface (exit) is not currently supported on any of the Tivoli Storage Manager Servers for Linux. This support will be available in a future level. Much more cryptic than enlightening. At 04:33 PM 10/6/2003 -0400, you wrote: My co-workers and I have been researching the possibility of migrating our TSM server from OS/390 to mainframe Linux. We have found a number of IBM conference presentations indicating that the mainframe Linux TSM server supports only tape drives attached by means of the Fibre Channel Protocol. On the face of it, this implies that ESCON-attached 3590 drives will not be supported. Is this a correct interpretation of IBM's statements on device support?

Re: ESCON 3590 and Linux TSM server
I found an IBM document that addresses exactly this sort of issue at: http://www.storage.ibm.com/tape/conntrix/pdf/3590_isv_matrix.pdf This has a table for each of a number of products, including TSM. Each table has a row for each of a number of platforms the product runs on and a column for each of three 3590 models. Each cell contains a list of supported attachment methods. The bad news is that the table for TSM has no rows for any sort of Linux server. The good news, in an odd sort of way, is that the same table has no rows for OS/390 or z/OS. This is good news in the sense that it seriously diminishes the credibility of the bad news.
Controlling nodes - storage pool migrations
We have storage groups set up for various parts of our business, primary pools being to dasd and migrating to tape in an automated Tape Library (ATL). Most of the nodes in the different storage groups are file servers, some holding many gigabytes of data. As I understand from the TSM/ADSM documentation and experience, when a dasd storage group meets the migration criteria (High Mig), TSM looks for the node that has the MOST data in the storage pool and then proceeds to migrate ALL of that node's filespaces from dasd to tape before it checks to see if the migration low threshold has been met. We currently have the situation that the node with the most data has over 200G of data on dasd, causing us to run out of tapes in the ATL (and bringing down the dasd usage to well below the low threshold). I've tried to make the Migration Delay = 30 days, which I believe will check to see if ALL the files for a particular node have not been touched in 30 days before migrating ALL of the node's files. If this is true, then these fileservers will never have all of their files 30 days old, since files are updated regularly and I would need to have Migration Continue = yes to avoid the dasd storage pools from filling totally. If my assumptions are correct, throwing more dasd at the dasd storage pools will only make these migrations even larger. Is there a way to tell TSM to not migrate the node with the MOST data or some workaround that gives us better control of these migrations? I'm willing to explore and test any suggestions that you may have. Roy Costa IBM International Technical Support Organization

Re: How many volumes can I delete at once?
Agreed. I don't think you can predict which ones you can do at once; I think it has to do with which data base pages are involved. You don't even need a shell script to do it; you can select your volumes like this: select 'delete volume ', volume_name, 'discarddata=y' 'wait=yes' from volumes where (blah) and TSM will generate the delete statements for you! Then you can just run it as a macro. -Original Message- From: Ray Baughman [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, October 07, 2003 10:50 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: How many volumes can I delete at once? Re: DSMFMT takes forever ( 15 hours). 100 gb
(reopening an old thread from a couple of weeks ago that got nowhere, because I just shot myself in the foot again with this one...) dsmfmt can take forever, and can almost totally lock up your whole system, if the extent you are dsmfmt-ing shares any physical volume with any OS paging space. I use only JBOD disks, but I assume that this also means that if your RAID box has any paging space in it, you cannot dsmfmt in any part of that RAID box, because RAID boxes can put anything together wherever they please and Murphy's law prevails here. Paging and dsmfmt must be completely and totally physically separate, at the volume level. (Sharing the same SCSI or SSA channel appears to only have a minor nuisance effect, compared to sharing the same volume.) If you must reboot in order to remove paging temporarily from a certain disk, then do that - the reboot will be faster and less intrusive. It appears that dsmfmt is a memory pig - probably constructing huge blocks (of what? The word Fish over and over?) in memory to write out at once, so it can run faster. It places a very heavy load on the paging subsystem. The OS could handle this, except that those huge, long I/O operations of the formatting itself interfere with its access to its paging space. So it's a classic deadly embrace and nothing goes anywhere. I had to reboot because I could not even get the system's attention long enough to enter a Unix ps command to find out the number of the dsmfmt process so I could kill it. I've got the bullet holes in my foot to prove it. IBM: I'm not asking for a solution here, as solving this would likely make dsmfmt run slower. Documentation of this restriction would be nice, though. It helps to be on AIX5L where you can drain a paging space without a reboot (BEFORE you start dsmfmt, of course), and that should be mentioned in any description of this restriction. WRONG Answer: dsmfmt file size
Yes, I am too easy to satisfy. That's because after a weekend of dsmfmt-ing, I'm declaring the thing BROKEN worse than before. I take back those nice things I said last Friday. I'm not using raw LVs because I want to use OS mirroring on my disk storage pools. Also the ITSM Administrator's Guide goes to some length to convince you not to use Raw LVs, and I tend to believe the basic manual for any product when they come out and say something and are that sure of it. What bewilders me now about dsmfmt is two questions: 1) Why does the error message tell me how big to specify for some disks and not for others? The Logical Volumes are identical except for size. On a 72gb disk, if I overestimate, it says how big to use. On a 36gb disk, it's like before, where I get to guess, and then wait several hours to find out if I guessed right or not. 2) Why is it's calculated number so low? After dsmfmt was done, the Unix df command showed that filesystem only 94% full, with nearly 5gb showing free on df on a 72gb disk. That's a lot of waste! I'm not so sure this new feature is such a great idea if it is going to forbid me from getting my disk as full as possible. By the old method of trial and error and waiting for hours, I could usually get it well over 99% full, according to the Unix df command. Now I really want that option you suggest - use it all (I mean, really use it all) and tell me how much space I've got when I'm done. The current state of affairs in V5.1 is worse than just wasting a lot of my time; now it is wasting my disk space as well, and it is behaving inconsistently. A consistently-behaving, easy to use to allocate all of something, version of dsmfmt is VITAL to disaster recovery capabilities! Re: WRONG Answer: dsmfmt file size
I too, have read the manual, and talked to TSM folk, about RAW vs. filesystem usage. I must say, that because of ease, I have always used raw LV's and never had a problem, and get very good performance. If you are talking about AIX, OS mirroring takes place at the LV level, so it is a piece of cake to due OS mirroring, with very little guess work. Set up your LV, and do a mklvcopy, sync and your done. I use TSM mirroring for the DB and log, and OS mirroring for STG pools, all LV based. Again, never a problem. bob I too, have read the manual, and talked to TSM folk, and I have never had On Tue, Oct 07, 2003 at 12:30:06PM -0500, Roger Deschner wrote: Yes, I am too easy to satisfy. ANR0480W Session 331 for node NT0821I () terminated -
TSMer's I've read lots of good stuff in the Archives about this, but none of them seem to actually answer my problem. Here's the scoop: Just switched from Windows 2000 server running 5.1.7.0 to a 2003 Server running 5.2.1.0 It was a net new server and new installation of TSM. We did not migrate anything, just moved all the clients to a new TSM server. Since then, more often than not, but not always, I have 7 clients that receive this error message every 30 seconds for one hour while they are supposed to be backing up. ANR0480W Session 331 for node NT0821I () terminated - connection with client severed. The 7 clients did not have problems previously. The 7 clients will occasionally back up successfully. The 7 clients are located at 3 different physical locations. The 7 clients are all WinNT 4, SP6 (But I have other clients with this version who are fine) The 7 clients have different levels of TSM Client Code: 4.1.0.0, 5.1.5.0, 5.1.6.7 Some of the clients backup at 8:00 pm, some at 11:00 pm, some at midnight, and some at 1:00 am. 133 other client backups run successfully at times ranging from 6:00 pm util 3:00 am. None of the clients backup directly to tape. Disk storage pools do not overflow during the backup window. We're not running out of available sessions. The dsmerror logs have these errors, but a lot of my clients report these errors: ConsoleEventHandler(): Process Detached. ConsoleEventHandler(): Caught Logoff console event. The dsmsched.log sometimes will have this entry as the last entry in the log (occurs when the backup should start) TCP/IP accepted connection from server. Otherwise it's just Waiting to be contacted by server. I cannot find any errors in the activity log that indicate a different problem. What's up? thanks for your help! Netware issue: Can't write files during restore...
Hi TSMers... I've got a system here running Novell Netware 5.1 SP6, with TSA500.NLM at 5.0.5d, TSANDS.NLM at 10110.95, and SMDR at 6.50c, using the web client at version 5.2.0.0 to manage a restore process to an alternate directory. Here's the catch: About 75% (of 2000) of the files that we're attempting to restore fail with an error that says that the file could not be written, with no reason code. The users still appear to exist, and the other 25% of the files restore without an issue. We've tried everything we could think of to try and troubleshoot the problem: Extensive searches of the ADSM archive for 2003. Verified that the account running the client acceptor had sufficient privs. Checked to see that the TSM server activity log for errors. Checked the web client error log, but got very non-descriptive errors. Verified that we weren't trying to restore compressed files to non-compressed volumes. (...and vice versa) Looked for maintenance for the Novell Client (there was none). Looked for patches (there was one with a non-applicable fix). If anyone has any insight into this issue, either methods to more accurately determine the cause of the error, or versions of the NLM's that need upgrades, it would be greatly appreciated. -JD.

Re: Netware issue: Can't write files during restore...
Could this be affecting you?? The problem that you could be facing is the following: APAR= IC36543 SER=IN INCORROUT TSM CLIENT NQR (NO QUERY RESTORE) CAN TERMINATE IMPROPERLY IF THE RESTORE IS INTERRUPTED BY A DISK FULL/QUOTA CONDITION . If a TSM client no query restore (NQR) is being performed and is interrupted due to a disk full condition (possibly caused by disk quota management at a directory level), recovery from this condition will prematurely terminate the NQR processing. When the TSM client resumes the NQR operation after the disk full condition is corrected, the TSM server will terminate the restore. The TSM client will indicate it is done with the restore as well, showing final statistics as if the restore had completed. However, the restore has not finished restoring all objects yet, and potentially several files/folders could be missing. . The NQR operation should properly continue from the point of interruption after recovering from the disk full condition, and not terminate as observed above. . This was observed on TSM 5.1.6 client for Netware and TSM server 5.1.x. Initial Impact: High LOCAL FIX: Perform the restore again. If possible, do not impose disk quotas until after the TSM client restore operation is complete. NOTE: V5.1.6.0 is the same code at V5.2.0.0 when refering to fixes include. . There is a fix for this in V5.1.6.7 but there is no fix for this yet for V5.2.0.0 code. Development should have a fix within a month or so(Estimate). ... The problem you are probably getting is due to some disk quotas on the netware filesystem/directory level. You are probably getting out of disk conditions... . The following workaround could be used, add the following to the dsm.opt file: test disablenqr At 03:51 PM 10/7/2003 -0400, you wrote: Hi TSMers... Re: Amount of Data on a Backupset
From: Linda Seeba [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] I am running TSM 5.1.3 on an AIX platform. I created a backupset for a customer and now they want to know how much data was backed up to it. I can tell them the amount of objects but not the amount of data. Does anyone know how to get this information? It's almost certainly not available from the TSM server, because the TSM database does not track that information. However, it's a safe bet that (assuming that the backupset is recent) that the amount of data on the TSM client is pretty much equal to the amount of data on the backupset tape. (This assumes that you created a backupset of the entire client, and not a backupset of one of the client's filespaces.) You have to remember that a backupset is an entity independent of the TSM server. A backupset can be restored from a media drive locally attached to the TSM client, and has no need for TSM server intervention. -- Mark Stapleton ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

Re: Netware issue: Can't write files during restore...
Hi leonard, Charles, Mark... The files fail during the restore, and it's not a case of it terminating early and giving us a false positive. User Quotas is a possibility -- users are limited to 10MB, so anyone with more than 5MB could conceivably have their restore fail. I'll talk to the admin about temporarily lifting the limits. The Netware box is fairly current (latest service pack), or so I've been told. We'll try the test restore on a different machine... As for the space question, we restored less than 200MB, and had 12GB available on the volume. Thanks for your lightning-fast replies everyone. =) -JD. So I want to get it out of circulation, perhaps to send it for recirtification or replacement. (At USD$100/each I do not casually discard suspect S-DLT tapes!) But if you are careless about how you do this, it will get reused, sometimes very quickly. So I always work deliberately - instead of letting expiration and reclamation remove the data from the suspect tape, I do a MOVE DATA. Then, with my REUSEDELAY set to 2 days, I have a chance to grab the tape while it is still Pending. The best way to remove a suspect tape that is Pending is to do a DELETE VOL, and then ***IMMEDIATELY*** do a UPDATE LIBVOL libname volname STATUS=PRIVATE. If you are slow, it will get reused the very next time that a scratch tape is needed - there's some kind of logic here that probably makes sense except in this special circumstance. Then leave it physically in the library until your next database backup, after which you can safely remove it. Minimizing Restore Time Using Backupsets
Hello Everyone I have the (perhaps) crazy idea that having backupsets around can help my restore time even if they reside on a library controled by the TSM server. I have a server with around 400,000 small files and over 150 Gigs. I can't do Image Backups cause files reside on an old NAS. I have an average backup trhoughput of about 6 Mb/Sec but restore is not good: 2.2 Mb/Sec. I got the idea that if I do periodic backupsets and restore from those, even though they'll be traveling trough the network, restore tiem will decrease. Is all this real or am I missing something? How do backupsets integrate in your backup strategy? Ing. Jorge A. Salinas G. What you're seeing is due to normal file I/O under AIX going through the virtual memory subsystem. There appears to be a bit of a problem with certain vmtune settings - where the scenario you describe happens when creating large files. It's not dsmfmt - I've seen the same problem with 'dd' and Oracle. You'll also see the 'lrud' kernel thread spinning. We've managed to fix our immediate problem by remounting the Oracle database filesystems with the 'dio' option. Since this bypasses the AIX VM file cache, system responsiveness has improved dramatically, and paging space utilisation has dropped, and lrud rarely appears at the top of the busy process list. Oracle operation also seems slightly better. There's absolutely no point to the OS caching file data for TSM db, log or stg pool volumes - or Oracle DB files or DB2 or... With TSM, my recommendation is to use raw devices - this is what we do with our servers. It can make a huge difference. The 'dio' option appeared (I believe) in a maintenance level of 5.1. However, I think it's only mentioned in doco for AIX 5.2. Cheers, -- Paul Ripke Unix/OpenVMS/TSM/DBA I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by. -- Douglas Adams

Re: WRONG Answer: dsmfmt file size
Thanks to all for the suggestions. I am using OS mirroring because, as I said originally, this is a data area, not log or database. The doc (The Advantages of Using Journal File System Files, page 385, TSM Administrators Guide V5.1 GC32-0768-00) makes it clear that you can get into trouble if you use OS mirroring with raw volumes for log or database. But TSM mirroring is OK for log or database on raw volumes. Also OS mirroring is OK for log or database on JFS files. But for data storage pools, where TSM mirroring does not exist, on raw volumes, it is inconclusive as to whether or not you can have problems. So I'm using JFS because I want to mirror my disk storage pools. Using all 2gb dataspaces is not viable for performance, and would be a nightmare to create and manage on big 36gb and 72gb disk drives. But my point is, when I use JFS space for any area, it is impossible to tell it to use all the space, it is impossible to calculate how much to tell it to use if you want to use all of it, and it behaves VERY inconsistently depending on something to do with disk size, on top of it all. It wastes only 70mb on a 36gb drive (which I can certainly live with), but after telling me how much I can use, it wastes 5gb on a 72gb drive. Same OS, same Volume Group, same filesystem settings, same everything except size. I suspect it is failing to take into account the large Number of Bytes per Inode setting. It has taken me two days of trial and error to figure out how large to specify it on the 36gb drives, which should have been a number that was instantly available, either via the program or via a formula published in the manual. Other notes: The file system is Large File Enabled, and has Number of Bytes per Inode set to 131072, and Allocation group Size set to 64mb. This is AIX V4.3.3 TSM server V5.1.6.5. dsmfmt is definitely broken. Roger Deschner University of Illinois at Chicago [EMAIL PROTECTED]
space reclamation on a server storage pool?
We have 2 systems. TSM1 and TSM2. TSM2 is used solely as an offsite system to backup our primary tape storage pool on TSM1. When I run reclamation on the server storage pool on TSM1, the process requests a mount on TSM2 and a mount on TSM1. It appears to be copying data from the mount on TSM1 to TSM2. Why wouldn't reclamation mount 2 tapes on TSM2 and copy the data that way instead of through the network which is going to be much slower. Essentially it seems like it is going to copy the exact same data from TSM1 to TSM2 two times because it gets copied once during the BACKUP STG command, and then again during the space reclamation of the server storage pool. This seems like a great waste of time when the exact same data should already be on the TSM2 system and could be moved directly from 1 tape to another where it would be considerably faster. Does this make sense? Why would it be done this way? John
