Re: DST change leads to server not starting

2007-01-16 Thread Roger Deschner
I assume you used tzedit.exe to make the change. If not, try that. You
can download a copy for Win2000 at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/8/a/58a208b7-7dc7-4bc7-8357-28e29cdac52f/TZEDIT.exe
This is a whole lot preferable to editing the registry by hand.

Make sure you follow the final two steps in Microsoft's tzedit.exe
instructions - which is that you must change your timezone to something
OTHER THAN your correct time zone, and then change it back again. If you
don't do those last two steps, things will be all confused.

See Microsoft's web page about this:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=914387

You probably should bounce dsmserv after making this change.

P.S. These instructions will work for anything back to Win95, except that
the Windows 95/98/ME version of tzedit.exe is at
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/samples/ps/Win98/Reskit/CONFIG/

Adding new reports to TSMOR

2007-01-16 Thread Steven Harris

Hi all,

I've tried looking for detailed info on TSMOR but haven't been able to
find anything. Google, redbooks, quickfacts have nothing Very
frustrating.
I'm trying to add a new report to TSMOR reporting. I've worked out the
sql that I want and run it with reasonable success.

The problem I'm having is how to get TSMOR to substitute in the start
and end times.
for example, one of the standard reports runs
select domain_name, schedule_name, node_name,
  substr(char(scheduled_start), 1, 16) as "SCHEDULED_START",
  substr(char(actual_start), 1, 16) as "ACTUAL_START",
  status, result
from events
where (scheduled_start between '2007-01-16 14:50:29'
and '2007-01-17 14:50:28') and LENGTH(domain_name) IS NOT NULL order
by scheduled_start,status,result

The "scheduled_start between" clause is inserted by TSMOR when the
report is generated.

Does anyone know how to do this for my own SQL?

Thanks

DST change leads to server not starting

2007-01-16 Thread Andrew Ferris
Hello TSM-ers,

The one Windows 2000 server we have is our TSM server (5.3.3.3). I was trying
to get ahead of the upcoming DST change by editing the timezone info on the
server as Microsoft do not have an official patch for Win2K. TSM has detected
the time has changed and is complaining about ANR011E aka "an unxpected system
date has been detected and the server is disabled".

I've looked at ADSM Quick Facts and tried to run "dsmserv runfile accept_date"
with accept_date consisting of the lines ACCEPT DATE and COMMIT but I get the
following:

ANR47261 the ICC support module has been loaded
ANR8550E Error opening accept_date

accept_date is in the same directory as dsmserv.

So needless to say, I feel both stupid at getting in this state and somewhat
unclear on how to get out of it. Could someone help me out on this?

Thanks Richard,
I should have mentioned that I did tell the administrator to use the fix

My issue with the failed 12 though is the real issue here. I find it
hard to believe that it is related to the ANS0106E message, although I
have been known to be wrong before. Once they update the software to fix
the message error I'll have to see if that fixes the Failed 12 too. In

Geoff -

The ANS0106E message usually indicates a missing piece in an install
or upgrade operation, and is struggling to fully operate. Your
posting doesn't indicate if you've sought that message on the TSM
Support Page (http://www-306.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/
support/IBMTivoliStorageManager.html), which has a promising Technote.

Can't help you with the RC=12 scant info supplied to the central,
server point of reference. I can imagine that some of the developers
feel as I do if I were one off the product developers, in having more
useful and helpful information conveyed between client and server, to
help the frazzled administrator with large numbers of clients.

Almost sounds like the client upgrade to 5.3.4 didn't work. I've had problems
in the past where an "upgrade" over existing client
code doesn't replace all the files. I usually like to uninstall and then
install the new version. I saw this a lot when going from
the 4.x clients up to the 5.1 code. But I just had one on our PDC not take the
upgrade over the existing client. I had to uninstall
and re-install the 5.3.4 code. I also make sure there's nothing left in the
BACLIENT directory after the uninstall, except DSM.OPT
and the LOG files.

Re: Win-DFS and Backup

2007-01-16 Thread Bob Talda

Andy et al:
Ironically, missed this exchange because I've been dealing with the
same problem Chris reported,
though I didn't know it at the time.

In our situation, the user reported seeing 2.8 million files expired
after a manual backup.

Upon much further investigaion, as best as we can determine, the user
had installed the
TSM software, and started the schedule service, before configuring the
DFS Replication.
Thus, TSM backed up the replicated file systems without issue until the
user bounced the
service (for reasons beyond this email); the subsequent backup then
honored the same
type of "Operating System" excludes Chris reported.

Before reading Richard Sim's reply to this thread, our working
hypothesis had
been that the DFS Replication service created registry entries that the
TSM client
converts to "Operating System" excludes...which seems to be reinforced
by Richard's
reply.

As such, the users rebooted the server in question, starting the TSM
service and
then the DFS replication without success (at least, as the Query INCLEXCL
output would indicate)

It seems to us that what your workaround does is, by shutting down the
DFS service,
is to remove these registry entries so that the TSM scheduler, when
started by the CAD,
doesn't add the "Operating System" excludes, and thus backup the file
services.
(Our experience illustrates why the CAD has to be used to start the
scheduler, btw)

As such, is there another way to tell the TSM client (v5.3.4.4 btw) to
ignore the
registry entries?

(BTW, the news that a fix is possibly available soon is welcome news indeed)

Andrew Raibeck wrote:

Hi Chris,

This is described in APAR IC50148 (searchable on the web by doing a search
from the link in my sig).

The workaround is to shut down the DFS replicator service before starting
the scheduler (you can't use PRESCHEDULECMD for this), then run the
backup; after the backup completes, you can restart DFS (for this you CAN
use POSTSCHEDULECMD).

One method to accomplish this would be:

1. You need to use the CAD to manage the scheduler.

2. Define a schedule on the TSM server to execute a batch script that
shuts down the DFS service. This schedule should run at the same time or
before the scheduled backup. Give that schedule a high priority so it runs
FIRST. For example, if you define this schedule and the backup to run at
20:00, but give the batch script schedule a higher priority, it will run
first. Then the backup will run, and you can configure a POSTSCHEDULECMD
operation to restart DFS.

The good news is that after the APAR was initially closed, further
investigation yielded that we could fix it in the defect stream.
Availability is currently targeted for end of this month or early next
(subject to change at our discretion).

Hi,

We have had AIX system loose tcp services. A long time ago it used to be
somewhat common (back in AIX 4.3.3 days). It has happened on AIX 5.x, but
very infrequently. In fact, I can't think of the last time. To recover we
logged onto
the console and run /etc/rc.tcpip. Logging in would take a very long time
since DNS and
NIS would be down, so we had to wait for timeouts. What you describe
possibly
sounds like a timeout problem of some type.

Our tsm instances use all san storage and in a few months all our TSM
servers will be
on aix lpars. They work just fine, but must be configured correctlly for
the resources
you need (memory, cpu, adapters).

Hello All,

I have a couple of questions...

1) This weekend TSM 5.3.2 on our AIX server became 'unstable', in
that it would accept a userid but then just 'hang' and not give a
prompt for a password. Some short time later, we were not even able to
telnet into the AIX box that the TSM server software resides on. We
could ping the box but it is as if the TCP/IP services for AIX 5.3.2 had
stopped. Has anyone else experienced any problems like this?

2) Is it common to put the TSM software on the main AIX box vs
putting it on an LPAR of a SAN?

Thanks for any help.Kerry

Speaking of 3592 drives, there have been some critical issues with the
firmware of 3592 drives. IBM put out a updated firmware (D3I1_A27 for E05
models) on 12/13/2006 with a document that says "Some of these changes

The Admin Guide manual shows how to share a 3494 both dynamically and
statically. Have you set up according to those instructions and
verified that configuration? If so, what specific error messages are
you getting?

We have 4-TSM servers sharing 3-libraries (1-3494 and 2-LTO) but none are
Windoze since when I first tried to use Windoze, it wouldn't share nicely
(what a shock !) so I went the Linux route and never looked back.

If you want to discuss this configuration, offline, feel free to email me

[ADSM-L] 3494 Library, 3592 Drives, TSM Windows 5.3.4.1

Folks,

This library is to be connected to two TSM servers. The first is
working fine as it is using the Default Scratch and Private Categories
300 and 301. In the second TSM server, we are connected and pathed as
expected to the library and drives. However, we are getting drive can't
read tape type, etc., type messages. I know this has to do with
configuration on the library side.

I understand that I need to have scratch and private categories, volume
serial number ranges and drives all properly configured on the library.
What I need is the definitive "here's how to do all this" for the 3494.
I've looked at the Simm's Quick Facts and searched the archives but have
not found what I am looking for.

Help, as always, is appreciated!

On the second question anser is: No (but it depends on HW of dedicated
machine and resources of LPARs)
Also it's important type of your backups (LAN/SAN) via DiskPool or
directly to the tape and many other...
But in most cases performance of Dedicated machine / LPAR will be the same
if resources are same (LAN, FC, SCSI, Mem, CPU and other resources)

Architecture and Instability Questions

Re: Architecture and Instability Questions

2007-01-16 Thread BEYERS Kurt
Kerry,

I would start by examining the error report of the AIX box. Most likely the
root cause will be found here and as a consequence, TSM could not be accessed
any more.

When you open a TSM Admin client and enter a TSM user (eg admin), this is still
happening on the client/server where the TSM BA client is installed. Afterwards
the TSM server is being contacted. Which fails since no TCP/IP connection could
be established.

best regards,
Kurt

I have some goal to update the files during Q1 2007 with VMware ESX 3 and P2V
with the latest version of CBMR from IBM.

P2V with CBMR and TSM

Enjoy, and if you got any questions please let me know.
You can reach me on [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I will be probably being on both Tivoli User Conference in San Francisco, CA in
May and also TUC Rome, Italy in June.

Should I send out an email on ADSM.ORG when I got the documents updated?

Thanks

Hi Jim,
With the BMR tool from IBM/TSM you can do a migration from Physical to Virtual
(P2V), Virtual to Physical (V2P) or Physical to Physical (P2P).
And you can pay for one time use if you don't want to keep the product.
There are some VMware documents I wrote together with VMware/IBM and Cristie
about this how to Backup a Physical box and move it to VMware. Also how you BMR
protection your VMware ESX box with TSM and there BMR tool.

Talk to your IBM rep and he will help you out on this.

Re: SV: Tivoli Restore into VMware Instance

2007-01-16 Thread Jim Hatfield
Thank You Christian. :)

Apparently, in talking with my VMware guy yesterday evening, VMware will also
import a "Drive Snapshot" image directly. (the Tom Ehlert Software plug-in
for BartPE that we make DR drive images with)

If that works, we'll put in some über-blades in the DR Datacenter chassis and
in an emergency, throw images onto VM instances and Tivoli restore the previous
night's backup. He's telling me he's already done this with both Ghost and
Drive Snapshot but never thought I would have need of it. (!!!)

I'm crossing my fingers on this working...we're very excited about it!

Re: Criteria for full DBbackup

2007-01-16 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Comments:

- You don't account for the case where NUM_BACKUP_INCR is 0.

- I would also change the test for NUM_BACKUP_INCR=20 to
NUM_BACKUP_INCR>=20. This is because if incremental BACKUP DB operations
are run between executions of the script, NUM_BACKUP_INCR could be greater
than 20 by the time the script runs again.

- I do not think the test for LAST_BACKUP_DATE is necessary, as
NUM_BACKUP_INCR would be 0.

Also, I think the second "if(rc_ok) goto ba_full" statement is extraneous.

So would the following be more concise?

select * from db where num_backup_incr=0 or num_backup_incr>=20
  if(rc_ok) goto ba_full
  ba_incr: backup db devcl=$1_FILEDEV type=incremental wait=yes
  goto done
  ba_full: backup db devcl=$1_FILEDEV type=full wait=yes
  done:

The odd thing about it ist that we have only 13 incrementals, so neither the

additional clue from the Reference or tsmwiki. Any Idea?

The odd thing about it ist that we have only 13 incrementals, so neither
the scripted nor the system criteria (20/32 incrementals) are met.
I got no additional clue from the Reference or tsmwiki. Any Idea?

Re: Emergency help:ANR1405W even w/ plenty of scratch tapes

2007-01-16 Thread Lee, Gary D.
John:

Had a similar problem last year. It was fixed in version 5.1.7.2.
I would recommend an upgrade to 5.1.9, as this also fixes a security
exposure.
Good luck.

Help!
Running TSM 5.2.7.1 under AIX 5.2. Problem I have not seen
before.
I am receiving:

the

   BACKGROUND completed with completion state
FAILURE at

Other processes like migrations, etc. are also failing. But from a q
libv I
can tell I have 16 scratch tapes. My 3590 device class is set to
format=drives, so that isn't my problem. Since this isn't a storage
pool volume, Maxscratch does not apply, but it is set to 6000, and our
tape storage pool has only 1500 tapes in it.

I was having the problem yesterday, and rebooted the TSM server. It
came back up, and I was able to do a Backup DB at that time, and it also
mounted a few scratch tapes in our primary tape pool. It added the
scratch tapes to the tape pool with no problem. Then about an hour
later (after I had gone to bed) it started getting the same problem. It
says I don't have scratch tapes, but I do.

Can anyone give me any insite? I am really stumped.

There is no need to Export-Import the storage pool data where you can
have the new server adopt the existing library and can Export-Import
the TSM database.

Remote Tape Device Question

2007-01-16 Thread adrian_compton
I have a Windows 2003 File Server Situated 300km's away that requires
backing up. We have a 512kb digi-net line to them.
We were using a "Tacit" (sic) server to replicate between that site and
our data centre and in turn backed up the data centre version using TSM.

"Tacit" is not up to scratch, and would like to consider the following:

1. Place a Tape Device at the remote site. (not sure where it would
connect
perhaps to a Linux,Aix, Windows device)
2. Use TSM at our Data Centre to manage the Client Schedule and backups.

Obviously there would be traffic across the digitnet line, but this

should be limited to file and directory information only. A major
limitation is the cost of bandwidth in South Africa

Do you think that this is a do-able solution or does anyone have a cost
effective suggestion/s

Thanks in advance.

SV: Tivoli Restore into VMware Instance

2007-01-16 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi Jim,
With the BMR tool from IBM/TSM you can do a migration from Physical to Virtual
(P2V), Virtual to Physical (V2P) or Physical to Physical (P2P).
And you can pay for one time use if you don't want to keep the product.
There are some VMware documents I wrote together with VMware/IBM and Cristie
about this how to Backup a Physical box and move it to VMware. Also how you BMR
protection your VMware ESX box with TSM and there BMR tool.

Talk to your IBM rep and he will help you out on this.

Thanks
Christian

Hi All,

Has anyone tried restoring a "regular" Windows 2003 server into a VMware
virtual instance with Tivoil?

We are kicking around some new DR procedures and this maybe sounded
doable?
