Can you link to the appropriate MUX solution for this? Or how to cobble it?
1310/1490 GPOan plus 1550ish DWDM would be interesting.

It might let you carry a PON to a remote place without installing
another ONT in the remote place.  You'd have to check your math before
you put a splitter in between the ethernet interfaces though.  One more
tool in the box I guess.

An IRU is exactly what got me wondering.  I was thinking how many fibers
I might need.

Re: [AFMUG] support for customer IoT

2018-12-20 Thread Adam Moffett
In all seriousness, this would be a billion dollar idea if people who
need it were willing to pay for it.

The problem of course is that some would rather complain to you that the
Roomba can't get on the internet, and if you don't do something they'll
post on Yelp and Facebook saying that you block Roombas, and then write
a letter to the FCC saying we need regulation to prevent ISP's from
blocking Roombas.  So we end up greasing the squeaky wheels and even
designing our network and procedures to make it easier to accommodate
the squeaky wheels.

I wonder if anyone ever called the electric company to ask why their
lightbulbs are blocked and their amps are throttled.  I wonder if anyone
ever called tech support for their new TV and got told that the TV
doesn't turn on because of firewall rules at the electric company.

My thoughts from a decade ago when I ran the technical side of a hosted
PBX startup:
1) The end service usually fails because of a local LAN issue.
2) The service gets to troubleshoot the LAN, just to keep services
   running.
3) Change your business plan. Instead of $50 - $100 for your current
service, charge $120 - $150 for LAN troubleshooting, and throw
   your current service in gratis.

You will end up with the same amount of work, but get a higher return.

We get those types of calls all the time, some of our ISPs want us to just
support them and some don't. For those that do we have developed a LAN
specialist team that helps them with those issues. We make it clear to the
customer that the issue is not with their ISP, but that we will still help
them. If you have a managed router it does make this much easier.

Item 29606, Customized 4 Fibers Indoor/Outdoor Single Mode
Pre-Terminated Assembly, 2.0mm Breakout Cable. You can select a custom
length. It's not a super heavy cable fiber, so I don't think suspension
would be a problem, but it also didn't feel flimsy like the UBNT "tough

installation, helps protect the ends as you unspool.

Not very effective for the growing number of people who only use the Internet
to watch video and play games, and never open a web browser, don’t even own a
computer or tablet, only use their phone for texting and to run social media
apps.

I am still a bit shocked when customers say the only way they have to check if
their Internet is working is to try and watch something on Netflix, because
that’s all they use it for. But it’s becoming more and more common, and as
they say, I’m “shocked but not surprised”. Soon I will expect it.
