I found someone else making real money, about $1k - $2k per month per location.

Too bad they're out of stock for the foreseeable future.

The value of the personal information gleaned by the bed outweighs

device developers can subscribe to 'the peoples network' to access these
devices to connect to the internet, I guess only I believe this is the only
revenue source for the network, I suspect for every $1 in helium tokens
given to the miners they only collected maybe 1/2 a cent, so it really
feels like a ponzi scheme, I think all of the earnings are inflated
because crypto is climbing

Re: [AFMUG] OT: Is it a full moon or something

2021-06-23 Thread Steve Jones
Small businesses tend to have their stuff in an unventilated closet because
the noise bothers Pam. So lights are rarely noticed.
Pam never tells anyone about the beeping because "the computer stuff is
always making noises"
They call the ISP because we are the only ones left who pick up the phone.l

Re: [AFMUG] OT: Is it a full moon or something

2021-06-23 Thread James Howard
I think there are some beds that record your sleep behaviors and upload it to
the hive so the collective knows all about how you're sleeping as well as
everything you say around your phone and your Alexa or google device. Last
time I was researching a new mattress I think I saw some that did anyway.

It's always quite disturbing when you talk to someone about something kind of
off the wall that you are thinking about looking for and then you open Facebook
and it's got a bunch of ads for that off the wall thing. maybe the bed
listens to what the person says in their sleep to harvest marketing info.

What does the bed do that it needs WiFi? Is it really just for the remote
control? Why would they not use a UHF or IR remote? Makes no sense. Did they
save $1.23 by using a general purpose single board computer with wifi?

I'm going to make a botnet out of adjustable beds and use it to mine bitcoins.
I'm betting the beds have surplus computing power.

So basically it's a 915MHz IOT AP with WiFi or 4G LTE repeater link to
internet?? And you earn revenue by buying one and installing it so
others' devices can connect to it? I assume they pay somebody for

My unpublished remarks were to ask the customer to reboot the bed. If
that didn't work then upgrade the firmware. If that didn't work then
send it back to Ubiquiti.

Oh yeah. That was it. His bed was adjustable and had a remote control
that operated over WiFi. The problem wasn't his internet, but an
internal WiFi issue.

[AFMUG] Cradlepoint cellular backup

2021-06-23 Thread Adam Moffett
A customer has a Cradlepoint with cellular backup in front of his actual
firewall.  He believes the public IP lives on the firewall, but somehow
the Cradlepoint is monitoring internet connectivity and will switch to
cellular automatically.he believes it doesn't need a separate IP
address to do this.

In this case we're doing DHCP with a reservation for a public IP.
Anybody without a reservation is getting a private IP.  He initially
plugged everything in and got a private IP, then we made the
reservation, but then we saw two ARP entries for the same MAC address.
One on the private IP and one on the public IP.  both were active, it
wasn't like an expiring ARP entry.

Does cradlepoint monitor the DHCP transaction between us and the
firewall and clone the WAN mac of the firewall?   Then what, use ARP to
verify the gateway is up? I've never used these things, I'm just trying
to understand how they work.

Did you do TDD PTP? You get extra power thanks to the rules. I can't
remember if the 300 has that off the top of my head, though.

We get this all the time, especially since Covid. Their remote monitoring
goes off so they call the ISP.
Our first question is always, "Can you power cycle the CPE?" Answer is
usually, "No one is onsite."

Against interference TDD hands down. ePTP is better for throughput and
it's not a fixed ratio in case traffic flows the other way.

[AFMUG] OT: Is it a full moon or something

2021-06-23 Thread Nate Burke
2 cases this morning, Business customers calling that they have no
internet. On both of them, it was a failed UPS Unit, and multiple
pieces of gear are down in their racks (severs/switches,etc) How can
you not notice that all of the blinking lights that are usually blinking
are not blinking? I'm guessing it's also much quieter than normal. And
how is the first thought that 'I'm going to call the ISP because the
internet isn't working' before even checking anything.
