Documentation and management should also include IP address tracking

powercode does most of what you want, unless you want it to always work the
way you expect. There is zero way to keep up clean documentation in
powercode on a per device scale but most of your initial list is somewhat
covered, unless you have one probe mess up, then the whole thing randomly
quits. Nobody in the company has a good grasp of what happens in the back
end (learn the history of the sytem as a whole, youll understand why, no
documentation on the core programming and a cleanup, and they lost their
greatest asset to start up a competitor (I assume due to the nonsense you
will soon learn to love/hate)

no one in the company currently has a broad grasp of the backend, multiple
people have a strong grasp of their forte

for the price, powercode is freaking awesome for what it does. its not the
ubnt of the hybrid nms/crm, but its close

dont even turn on the inventory joke they play on customers, its a module
worth conserving server resources over... but hey, its on the roadmap, lol

it is a good system though if you accept it for what it is and learn to
deal with stuff just breaking

Coming from mediawiki, Confluence has been worth every penny (and we're
paying way more than the $10/yr tier). And no, it's not in some third party

I should mention that for 8 outlets in a 1U rackmount form factor, I have used
APC model number AP7900 at several sites. Again, it’s not the cheapest
solution, but I have used these for over 10 years and never a single problem,
they are very trouble free (which is important – you don’t want your remote
reboot device actually causing outages or requiring truck rolls because it
locks up). You can also use the rackmount ears to wallmount these. CyberPower
makes a version that has 2 inputs and acts as an automatic power switch.

If you really want to do something like this, here's a copy and paste from my
notes file. Warning that the fcc_all.db is going to be huge so it's strongly
recommended to only pull out one or two states of sites at a time.

0. data source is http://reboot.fcc.gov/license-view

a. CSV and pipe delimited text files are linked on right side, along with data
dictionary and data sample

b. the CSV actual comma delimited text file is rather useless, because of the
number of entity names and description fields that also contain commas.
therefore we want to use the pipe delimited file.

c. consult the data dictionary DOC file for a detailed description of all
columns, this is provided on the license-view FCC ULS page. local copy here.
[[File:Fcc-license-view-data-dictionary.doc|thumbnail]]

1. download fcc-license-view-data-pipe-delimited-format.zip , this file should
be about 1.1GB zipped

2. unzip fcc-license-view-data-pipe-delimited-format.zip , the unzipped TXT
file should be about 11GB

3. you should now have the file fcc_lic_vw_pipe.txt which is delimited using
pipes

3b. use "pragma table_info(table_name); to see contents of table

4. create empty database with table fccinfo by doing the following:

a. sqliteman

b. create new file as fcc_all.db

c. create table fccdata

d. create 84 columns matching columns in header of fcc_lic_vw_pipe.txt file

example of columns to create for FCC ULS:

[AFMUG] network device map/wiki/management/database/documentation system

2016-08-04 Thread Sean Heskett
Hey guys and gals,

I don't know if something like this already exists so i thought i'd ask
y'all before i went and created it. I basically need a complete
documentation system for our network infrastructure.

-we have our network mapped in visio
-we have our network monitored in intermapper
-we have our network graphed in cacti
-i'm working on creating a wiki type page for all devices that has some
static info (like date put in service, a link to it's manual) and some
dynamic info (like Tx frequency)
-the devices all typically have a web config page

I want to turn our visio maps into HTML so that you can click on the device
and bring up it's wiki page that either links to all the other pages or
includes the info on that wiki page etc.

it seems like this is probably just a custom documentation database. When
i search on the google there are systems kind of like this but they seem to
be either too narrow minded (geared towards data center and server
infrastructure) or too broad...nothing seems to be "just right"

does something like this currently exist? what do you use to keep track of
all this information? what would you recommend?

Thanks!

Re: [AFMUG] Two Foot 5ghz DP Dishes

2016-08-04 Thread Mathew Howard
The new RocketDishes (LW model) are actually exactly the same as the
airFiber X antennas, except they're horizontal/vertical (the feedhorns are
even interchangeable) and the radio holder is slightly different. They're a
good option if you're using them with radios that have RP-SMA connectors,
(like any of the UBNT radios or ePMP), but if you're going to be using
radios with N connectors (like, say, a B5c for example), they're probably
not the best choice.

I doubt email will become obsolete any time soon. Everything business
related is still conducted via email... even if it's just a notification
that you need to go electronically sign a form on a website. It is still
the "most critical" piece of the Internet. Don't believe me? Take down
the Gmail servers for a few hours and see what the top news headline is

They're pretty f'king awesome.

Sometimes they disconnect from the cloud server if you use that (I
think it happens if the AP reboots, if you're connecting them via
wifi).

Otherwise, I love them. The larger models have a built in battery and
you can charge your phone with them :P

This is cool and everything, but a routerboard is not a console server.

I'm thinking it may be cheaper to get a non-cellular model (with

Re: [AFMUG] Cellular Antenna & Frequency database - FCC

2016-08-04 Thread Eric Kuhnke
If you really want to do something like this, here's a copy and paste from
my notes file. Warning that the fcc_all.db is going to be huge so it's
strongly recommended to only pull out one or two states of sites at a time.

0. data source is http://reboot.fcc.gov/license-view

a. CSV and pipe delimited text files are linked on right side, along
with data dictionary and data sample

b. the CSV actual comma delimited text file is rather useless, because
of the number of entity names and description fields that also contain
commas. therefore we want to use the pipe delimited file.

c. consult the data dictionary DOC file for a detailed description of
all columns, this is provided on the license-view FCC ULS page. local
copy here. [[File:Fcc-license-view-data-dictionary.doc|thumbnail]]

1. download fcc-license-view-data-pipe-delimited-format.zip , this
file should be about 1.1GB zipped

2. unzip fcc-license-view-data-pipe-delimited-format.zip , the
unzipped TXT file should be about 11GB

3. you should now have the file fcc_lic_vw_pipe.txt which is delimited
using pipes

3b. use "pragma table_info(table_name); to see contents of table

4. create empty database with table fccinfo by doing the following:

a. sqliteman

b. create new file as fcc_all.db

c. create table fccdata

d. create 84 columns matching columns in header of fcc_lic_vw_pipe.txt file

example of columns to create for FCC ULS:

sqlite> .fullschema
CREATE TABLE fccdata (

"emission_seq_id" TEXT,
"emission_code" TEXT,
"ground_elevation" INTEGER
);

e. save empty template database as fcc_template.db

f. keep fcc_template.db with all rows empty to use as a template for
future imports, do not modify further

4b. if necessary, use sqliteman to edit the columns for the
fcc_template.db fccdata table, ensuring that numeric-only columns are
described as INTEGER

5a. copy the fcc_template.db file with empty 84 columns to new file fcc_all.db

5b. sqlite3 fcc_all.db

a. .headers on
b. .mode csv
c. .separator |
d. .show
e. .import fcc_lic_vw_pipe.txt fccdata
f. this will take CPU usage to 100% on one core and take a rather long
time! the finished fcc_all.db file will be approximately 15GB in size
or larger.
g. .quit

or you can do the above on one line for non-interactive import:

sqlite3 -header -csv -separator '|' fcc_all.db '.import
fcc_lic_vw_pipe.txt fccdata'

Re: [AFMUG] Cellular Antenna & Frequency database - FCC

2016-08-04 Thread Eric Kuhnke
The entire FCC Part 101 database and the FCC ULS database are available to
the public as pipe delimited CSV files inside a big .zip file. It's close
to 24GB in size.

I have a cron job that retrieves a complete copy of both and parses them
into an SQL database for local use with a client's internal systems.

There is no column in the ULS database for antenna downtilt. That would be
in the cellular companies' internal documentation. You can certainly
discover locations and tower sites, though of course everything that is too
short to require FAA clearance and an ASR registration won't be in the
database.

Yeah, I would try to do it as a two piece solution. One very tiny Linux box
with a cellular modem, with an RS232 cable into a 48-port serial console
server that lets you redirect the session to any of the other 47 ports.

month billing cycle, those are things you want to pay attention to in the terms
and conditions that Faisil mentions. They get you with things like late fees
and such and have short billing cycles like 20 or 25 days.

As always, I think it'll really come down to timing and how various

Re: [AFMUG] Cellular Antenna & Frequency database - FCC

2016-08-04 Thread Cameron Crum
Not to that detail. Towers would be registered if they have a carrier on
them, but if they don't own the tower, it would be hit and miss and the FCC
does not require RF info to be submitted other than proof of coverage to
get/keep you license. They (used to) accept Carey curves for such proof. So
I wouldn't count on anything you find on that front to be very accurate.

Right, they'll have a license to use a channel in a geographic area.
Exactly where the antenna is and where it's pointed is up to them as
long as the signal stays within their contour.

or that's my understanding as I sit here in my cellular armchair.

I remember when you could reboot an SM and customers didn’t call and complain.

seconds.”

Subject: Re: [AFMUG] CNUT question how to autoupdate without downgrading anySMs?

Maybe try it on a mixed sector and see what happens? It probably isn't as bad
as you think having the 13.x SMs downgrade to 12.1.2 and then back up to 13.4.1.

I remember sitting at my desk one day and attempting to load a 14.1.2 beta on a
sector that was running a previous beta. I hit enable auto-update and then read
some messages on the list or something. Went back to it after 20 minutes or so
and went... WTF, why are all of the SMs on 13.2.1!? It's that damn package
order list! So like 15 SMs finished in that 20 minutes. Then I did it all over
again and it was fine. And no customers called, even when I updated the AP.
That's the nice thing with Canopy and ePMP, it loads and flashes the image
while continuing to pass customer traffic. Might slow down a little bit, but
that's about it. Now UBNT, you upload the image, hit upgrade and the customer
thinks their service just went down. So they power-cycle it. Argh!

On 8/3/2016 11:03 PM, Ken Hohhof wrote:

My main problem is coming from updating 430 SMs (200+ of them at one tower)
from 11.2 to 13.4.1 so I can replace the APs with 450i. But 430 needs to go
through 12.1.x first. To complicate things, the over-the-air upgrades to
12.1.x have been failing, so I have a mix on 11.2, 12.1.2, and 13.x. It just
seems a shame to take the 13.x SMs back to 12.1.2. But using SM Autoupdate
doesn’t seem to leave SMs unable to register and needing a reboot like a direct
upgrade.

With 450 I have no problem with go directly to 14.1.2, do not pass Go, do not
collect $200. 14.1.2 is wonderful.

Subject: Re: [AFMUG] CNUT question how to autoupdate without downgrading
anySMs?

I've always used the 'use access point as file server' option. I assume yours
is set the same. What that does is upload the boot image for the configured SM
platform revision (P9, 10, etc) to the AP. The *AP* then sends the image down
to the SMs (via RF private IP) and reports progress back to CNUT (which is what
the "update application address" is for on the AP's general config page). If
you have multiple platform versions selected, it will start at the top of the
list, and cycle through them every 20 minutes. 'Order by SM number' is helpful,
but I usually just do things half manually. Like I know x AP has only P10 SMs
registered, so I turn off everything except P10. Or I'll go tower by tower and
enable auto-update on a 4 sector cluster and wait for all SMs to finish, then
update the APs and move on to the next.

The last time I tried 'Update Entire Network' ungood things happened.

So anyway the problem there is that the AP doesn't care what version the SMs
are running, it just pushes the image to them. If you need to update specific
SMs to a certain version, then the only way is to manually add their management
IP address to CNUT.

Checking or unchecking the SMs in the CNUT auto discover list does nothing
more than allow you to select them to remove them from the list. Other than
that, it's purely informational, such as auto-update progress which the AP
reports back with SNMP messages. That list is simply the AP's LUID table.

It's not necessarily bad the way it works, it's just not good. Your situation
though, I don't know what to tell you other than... don't fall so far behind on
updates? . ducking. The main problem I have is the guys "finding" SMs
in the trucks and they end up being really friggin old. Like a 450 the other
day on 12.1.2 or something like that. I said, no, bad dog, find another SM. Not
my problem that you can't keep your truck organized.

On 8/3/2016 10:01 PM, Ken Hohhof wrote:

When I enabled Autoupdate for the AP, CNUT immediately started updating all
the SMs it discovered under that AP, without me checking the boxes or even
telling it to update anything. Which surprised me.

It sounds like you are saying you can check the boxes for which SMs you
want the AP to autoupdate, but that’s not what I observed. What am I doing
wrong?

In the past, I have always given CNUT the IP address of each SM, and
checked the boxes for which ones I wanted updated. I’m trying to learn how to
use SM Autoupdate. The manual doesn’t seem to be helping me a lot.

SMs on 13.2.1!? It's that damn package order list! So like 15 SMs
finished in that 20 minutes. Then I did it all over again and it was
fine. And no customers called, even when I updated the AP. That's the
nice thing with Canopy and ePMP, it loads and flashes the image while
continuing to pass customer traffic. Might slow down a little bit, but
that's about it. Now UBNT, you upload the image, hit upgrade and the
customer thinks their service just went down. So they power-cycle it. Argh!

My main problem is coming from updating 430 SMs (200+ of them at one
tower) from 11.2 to 13.4.1 so I can replace the APs with 450i. But
430 needs to go through 12.1.x first. To complicate things, the
over-the-air upgrades to 12.1.x have been failing, so I have a mix on
11.2, 12.1.2, and 13.x. It just seems a shame to take the 13.x SMs
back to 12.1.2. But using SM Autoupdate doesn’t seem to leave SMs
unable to register and needing a reboot like a direct upgrade.
With 450 I have no problem with go directly to 14.1.2, do not pass Go,
do not collect $200. 14.1.2 is wonderful.

I've always used the 'use access point as file server' option. I
assume yours is set the same. What that does is upload the boot image
for the configured SM platform revision (P9, 10, etc) to the AP. The
*AP* then sends the image down to the SMs (via RF private IP) and
reports progress back to CNUT (which is what the "update application
address" is for on the AP's general config page). If you have multiple
platform versions selected, it will start at the top of the list, and
cycle through them every 20 minutes. 'Order by SM number' is helpful,
but I usually just do things half manually. Like I know x AP has only
P10 SMs registered, so I turn off everything except P10. Or I'll go
tower by tower and enable auto-update on a 4 sector cluster and wait
for all SMs to finish, then update the APs and move on to the next.

The last time I tried 'Update Entire Network' ungood things happened.

So anyway the problem there is that the AP doesn't care what version
the SMs are running, it just pushes the image to them. If you need to
update specific SMs to a certain version, then the only way is to
manually add their management IP address to CNUT.

Checking or unchecking the SMs in the CNUT auto discover list does
nothing more than allow you to select them to remove them from the
list. Other than that, it's purely informational, such as auto-update
progress which the AP reports back with SNMP messages. That list is
simply the AP's LUID table.

It's not necessarily bad the way it works, it's just not good. Your
situation though, I don't know what to tell you other than... don't
fall so far behind on updates? . ducking. The main problem I
have is the guys "finding" SMs in the trucks and they end up being
really friggin old. Like a 450 the other day on 12.1.2 or something
like that. I said, no, bad dog, find another SM. Not my problem that
you can't keep your truck organized.

I’ve been using CNUT for 9 years but am a newbie at SM Autoupdate
because I thought it wouldn’t work if you checked Public for the IP
address.
When I enabled Autoupdate for the AP, CNUT immediately started
updating all the SMs it discovered under that AP, without me checking
the boxes or even telling it to update anything. Which surprised me.
It sounds like you are saying you can check the boxes for which SMs
you want the AP to autoupdate, but that’s not what I observed. What
am I doing wrong?
In the past, I have always given CNUT the IP address of each SM, and
checked the boxes for which ones I wanted updated. I’m trying to
learn how to use SM Autoupdate. The manual doesn’t seem to be
helping me a lot.
