I routinely delete it. I usually add a new full access user, then login
with the new user to verify it works, then delete admin. Done it
hundreds of times.

You could also rename the "admin" user, but I suspect deleting it is
disallowed in RouterOS and as a failsafe, it is simply recreating it.
Alternative fact?

[AFMUG] Netonix Quality problems ?

2017-03-08 Thread Stefan Englhardt
May be it's due to increased amount but I see failing Netonix Switches in our
Network.

Dead Powersupply, 2 dead switches which they say it's due to grounding (all
other Equipment at the

same sites never had this connected to the same cables). Now I have one
suddenly rebooting with

poe load above 25 Watt. It is not a cracy high failure rate but none of this
switches was old and conditions are

quite good. And a failing netonix is a dead site. I have lower failure rates
with MT-Switches/Routers.

Looking back at our cisco times I cant remember dead switches. They pointed me
to a hack where soldering

some cable will make them less sensitive to grounding problems.

What is your experience?

Re: [AFMUG] Netonix Quality problems ?

2017-03-08 Thread Josh Baird
My experience is that anytime one fails or has a problem (or bug), I
quickly get told it must be my fault because their products don't have
problems. I understand that I could have been at fault in at least a
couple of these failure instances, but not all.

Re: [AFMUG] Netonix Quality problems ?

2017-03-08 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
Let's look at the facts.

Each item they ship out, has gone thru some level of testing.
There can be an issue with bad components, and yes Grounding is a major source
of damage.
(Check their forums, they have decided to make a change on internal case
grounding).
They do offer a repair service, actual cost of repair does offer a option if
there was something defective in mfg.
(yes you have to accept their opinion).
Yes they are a small company, and have a knee jerk reaction of ... You are
wrong until proven correct..
I don't blame them, because of what majority wants to get away with in trying
to pull fast ones...

FWIW, evaluating all the pros and con's.. their switches are a product that we
feel comfortable in buying without thinking twice.

We have had them in service, we have had two or three damaged due to lightning,
(possible grounding issues), we have them repaired
(approx half the cost of new).

Overall I have no complaints...
(Keep in mind when dealing with smaller companies, getting needed attention to
detail also comes with having to put up with the personality of the person on
the other side).

My Two Cents worth.

2017-03-08 Thread Rory Conaway
I think we buy at least 2 or 3 a week on average and currently have 60 or 70
out there. What Faisal said is pretty accurate. When you are a small company,
your reputation is important to you and Chris is very proud of his switches, as
he should be. It was a game changer for us and they are now the only switch we
use in the field.

The only thing we have noticed recently is that when Ubiquiti upgraded to 6.0
and 8.0, their Discovery no longer shows the Netonix switches. Kind of petty
in my opinion because nothing they make will survive in Arizona temperatures.
I understand it, it’s just annoying in the field.

(Keep in mind when dealing with smaller companies, getting needed attention

My Two Cents worth.

Dead Powersupply, 2 dead switches which they say it’s due to grounding (all

suddenly rebooting with
poe load above 25 Watt. It is not a cracy high failure rate but none of this

Looking back at our cisco times I cant remember dead switches. They pointed me

some cable will make them less sensitive to grounding problems.

What is your experience?

Re: [AFMUG] Netonix Quality problems ?

2017-03-08 Thread Rory Conaway
We have pretty much the entire product line somewhere. For the most part
though, we stick with the 6-port Minis and buy 144w power supplies off Amazon,
the 150’s, and the 12-port DC units. The 6-port is the least expensive switch
that supports 24v high for the IgniteNets. If you use IgniteNet, check the
switch for that feature because not all of the Netonix switches have that mode,
especially the 150W AC unit we had started using a bunch of. The 250w version
can handle 2 ports with 24vH though.

The only problems I’ve had were grounding on 2 of the units and the repair cost
was more than reasonable. That’s not a bad record for the number of switches I
have and the heat issues that were frying other products. I’ve got a box of
TS-5’s that never should have crossed the Arizona border for proof.

We use mainly AC models (WS-12-250AC and WS-8-150-AC).

At some sites they feed minis.

Last dead is a WS-8-150-AC it does a reboot loop. Chris told me it looks like a
capacitor problem. They got some defective until they noticed. 2 Weeks before a
Power Supply of a WS-12-250AC died (no voltage on the output pins). Then there
where 2 WS-12-250AC and a mini which freezed last year due to surge (complete
dead). But there was no lightning event. So some of this grounding stuff. In
general we have quite good power supply here.

Buy a cheap Mikrotik switch as Mark suggested? The combination is more

[AFMUG] Cost of Operations per Customer a month

2017-03-08 Thread Sterling Jacobson
There is probably a name for this in business, but I'm not a trained/schooled
businessman.

What is your ISP cost per customer to operate right now?

Minus debt payments.

Mine is currently $38.86 a month.

That is taking my normal monthly costs minus loan payments and dividing it by
number of customers.

It seems high to me, but I am just getting started I figure.

Mine should go down some as I grow customers in already built areas, being
fiber it's geographically bound of course.

I think by the end of this year I should be around $25 per customer a month.

I don't have many business clients, but this calculation doesn't really count
those for much anyways.

What do you guys think?

Re: [AFMUG] Cost of Operations per Customer a month

2017-03-08 Thread Sterling Jacobson
Of course not, it's horrible with fiber, lol!

This is just monthly costs to operate the company minus any capex or debt
payments.

Our current debt repayments are almost exactly one third of our monthly revenue.

And by end of year, that will likely be almost one half our monthly revenue.

Don't know costs per month but excellent speeds when I have to test them.
usually over 20Mbps down and 6 to 10MBps up..LTE is good around hereon
road it switches to 3G on some areas of I-25 or 54 in New Mexico where are

Re: [AFMUG] Cost of Operations per Customer a month

2017-03-08 Thread Chuck McCown
Normally you have your revenue (top line) minus all your expense directly
related to providing the services. “Cost of goods sold” or COGS is a big part
of your expenses. Cost of BW, power, direct labor, health insurance, loan
interest, depreciation expense, etc that will give you gross income. Note loan
interest is an expense, the principle part is not.

All that stuff is called “above the line” or ATL.

Then you have all the expenses that are there with or without customers.
Office rent, power, extraordinary expenses etc.

This stuff is “below the line” or BTL.

Then you add ATL and BTL and hopefully you will have a positive number. That
is your Net Income. The “bottom line”.

You can have positive cash flow but negative income due to the effect of
depreciation and other things.
Or you can have a positive net income but a negative cash flow due to investing
in more stuff.

Like I said, the principle part of your debt payments are not expenses, they
are in investment. That is just converting dollars into other assets. So
you are keeping that money, just in a very hard to liquidate form.

As long as your bottom line is positive and you are cash flow positive you are
good. Assuming you are paying yourself a paycheck.

2017-03-08 Thread Chris Fabien
Gerard,
Looking at Baltic's website they seem to sell several software licenses for
this ZTE GPON equipment. Like $50 per PON Port license, $5.50 per ONT, etc.
Also $2100 for some server software. Are these required? Are you buying
them on AliBaba? Or does it somehow work without the licenscing/server
software?

Thanks
Chris

[AFMUG] Problem with Mimosa G2 & 100Mb routers

2017-03-08 Thread Ryan Ray
Not sure if anyone else is deploying the Mimosa platform en-mass but came
across a new issue today in case you're fighting with things.

The issue: Client Router receives very poor download no matter what signal
conditions are like. Download capped around 10Mb/s. Upload was unaffected.

The equipment:

A5 – 2.2.1 Version – GPS Synced

C5 – 2.2.1 Version – GPS Synced

G2 in passthru – 1.1.2 Version

Client Router – Asus N600

The problem:

G2 has an issue with 100Mb routers. Plugging in a 1Gb client into the
passthrued G2 resulted in full speed. Plugging a 100Mb router caused the
download to drop to 10Mb/s levels.

The solution:

   1. Replace G2 with regular power supply, fixed issue.
   2. In C5 change the duplex from auto to 100MF, fixed issue while still
   using G2.

on the backhaul. Equipment is super cheap, and it’s essentially backwards
compatible with GPON if your neighborhood runs are short like mine. But
again, lots of power is required.

Calix has NG PON2 which does 10 Gbps per wavelength and multiple
wavelengths all overlaid on GPON so nothing in the OSP has to change. All
the splitters etc still work. That will give everyone on the PON 312.5
Mbps symmetrical all at the same time. So oversubscribing 3:1 you could
sell 1G symmetrical to everyone and probably not run out of headroom.

The AE deployment is a total waste of equipment and resources for the
utilization we're seeing. I have to go there next week and turn up another

Not sure if anyone else is deploying the Mimosa platform en-mass but came
across a new issue today in case you're fighting with things.

The issue: Client Router receives very poor download no matter what signal
conditions are like. Download capped around 10Mb/s. Upload was unaffected.

The equipment:
A5 – 2.2.1 Version – GPS Synced
C5 – 2.2.1 Version – GPS Synced
G2 in passthru – 1.1.2 Version
Client Router – Asus N600

The problem:
G2 has an issue with 100Mb routers. Plugging in a 1Gb client into the
passthrued G2 resulted in full speed. Plugging a 100Mb router caused the
download to drop to 10Mb/s levels.

The solution:

  1. Replace G2 with regular power supply, fixed issue.
  2. In C5 change the duplex from auto to 100MF, fixed issue while still using
G2.
