Re: [AFMUG] How frequently have you had a price increase?

2014-10-07 Thread Craig Schmaderer via Af
We don't do any contracts, and I have only done one price increase in 12 years.
About 4 years ago we increased all plans by 3 dollars. We just did the
increase and I think about .5% of people called to complain. 20% didn't notice
the change but most of them caught it the next month. Oh, we did send out 1
email to all customers before we did it. We lost 1 customer out of 600 when we
did it. My advice is if you are going to do it, I think that most people won't
say anything if it's around 1-3 bucks, so do 3, I think 4 would still be ok,
but I think 5 bucks is where some people will get a little more bitchy.

We are thinking of raising our prices on our residential basic plan. Some of
our customers have been on the same priced plan for 7 years (or more). Around
$ 45 / month for "up to 5Mbit/1Mbit". Probably 25% of those customers, we are
the only "good" source for Internet. The rest have varying levels of DSL or
cable options.

Thinking of bumping those customers to $ 49. Maybe a little more, haven't
decided.

How do you handle price changes and/or on your customers on "rolling contracts"
?

For us, the biggest issue is the replacement cost of the 450. NOT the initial
cost, that is what it is, but we are in the lightning capital of the world.
Sometimes we can repair everything that gets hit and sometimes on a direct
strike, we can’t repair any of it. On most towers, we deploy 5 Ghz and 2.4
Ghz, so 8 APs each. Some are only one frequency band, so then there are only
4. Say those 4 APs are supporting 50 customers at $ 45 each… $ 2250 / month.
(most towers are a less than that and some are more). So, if I lose $ 8K in
APs ($ 2000 x 4) in one evening, I am looking at least 4 months of lost revenue
just to replace those APs (not counting labor, etc.) We have had commercial,
well-grounded towers that get hit twice in a season, so that’s 8 months
(probably more like 10 months loss in real business terms) per year. That
makes NO sense to play that game.

And, again, a lot of towers have two frequency bands, thus 8 APs. We have had
4 commercial towers out of 18 with total losses this year on the APs.
Thankfully, the used market on 100 series APs is very low cost, so not nearly
as big of an impact.

So, with ePMP APs (while maybe not as good as 450APs) I can at least cut my
losses by 80%. That’s a big deal !

Unfortunately, that reality forces my hands.

Paul

DSG Canusa CFTV-750 is what I use. 3:1 shrink, adhesive lined. Shrinks down to
the Cambium LMR-240 jumpers just fine. It takes a bit of force to get the 3/4"
tube over the slightly larger than 3/4" N male head, but it works. I use a
Wagner heat gun on low. Things get a little warm, but nothing bad has happened

Yep, www.video-insight.com<http://www.video-insight.com>,
http://www.video-insight.com/support/supported-cameras.php
they support pretty much all ip cameras, and we use there converters too for
analog cameras.

You can buy their cameras if you are a dealer, which you just call them and say
hey, I want to be a dealer.
www.advidia.com
The nice 3meg fixed cameras are around $300 bucks and their cameras include
lifetime free software for that camera with updates.
Others are priced around $500 to $800 for the optic zoom ones.

If you want to add any other brand camera it is like $125 bucks per camera and
a 20% yearly update and support fee. That's not to bad, but their cameras are
free!!

So we can go into current jobs and use the software and use the clients
existing cameras and add other cameras and use one software solution which
total rocks, because that is all they focus on, is the software not the
hardware.

Sounds like whatever you do don’t upgrade, just a side note, we run all of our
230ptp on 11.2. That is the last stable firmware that I have seen for this
product. I have worked with cambium on the no registration problem and gotten
no where, its like they gave up on this product. Everything I have tested
since 11.2 has registration problems, either they won’t link or they take 10,
20 or whatever they feel like minutes to link. So we just stay on 11.2. I
have never seen any issues for us on 11.2. YMMV

Oh side note, all the 230ptp we have are the 5.4ghz flavor, links range from a
few miles to 10 miles, we have tested and seen this behavior on all different
lengths and different links. We tested like 3 links one night with guys on
both ends to make sure we saw the same behavior, all links fail to register,
you normal get some registration range error. I have tested like 3 or 4
different version past 11.2, I gaveup about 6 months ago on this, and we are
jest sticking to 11.2, all new links are 450ptp or licensed.

[AFMUG] New Cell tower install seeing a lot of CRC errors

2014-11-19 Thread Craig Schmaderer via Af
Ok guys, I know this has been talked about a few times about FM towers. We
have a new site, that has about 20 cell phone antennas on it and maybe 8
private band handheld radio antennas. We are seeing crc errors on all the
radios, not really effecting overall traffic, but I would like to fix it. I
have only used really good CAT5 cable for about 10 years now in my area on all
of our towers with great success. We never have lightning issues unless it's a
direct hit and the radio blows up. What I am wondering is that maybe when I
used shielded cable 10 years ago to connect to cisco aps, we always popped the
ports on them. Granted I didn't know much back then and I don't believe I had
the shielded cable grounded right. So what I'm asking, I assume the best way
to fix this is with shielded cable. How do most people setup the shielded run.
So do I go into a chuck ground with a shielded end connected to the drain wire
at the bottom and then do I go into a chuck ground at the top too? Or do I
strip the jacket and ground the shield to the tower? I guess I don't want to
just guess and loose radios in lightning storms again, can someone let me know
what great results they have in the way they ground the run? Thanks, Criag.

2014-11-19 Thread Craig Schmaderer via Af
Thanks, so just to confirm, you only ground it with the chuck rack, and on top
you still use a shield connected so the radio gets connected, and no where else
do you ground the cable to the tower or cut into the jacket?

use these in the equipment room at the bottom of the tower:
wbmfg.com<http://wbmfg.com> GigE-APC-HV
http://wbmfg.com/products.cfm?PID=61

they slide into this APC rack mount:
http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=PRM24&gclid=CPXz8JWUh8ICFeRzMgod4DwA3w

or into this DIN rail mount:
http://wbmfg.com/products.cfm?PID=39

use shielded RJ-45 connectors on both ends of the cable and make sure that the
drain wire is firmly connected to the outside shielding (you are suppose to
solder to the shield but in my opinion that is impractical up on a tower and if
you crimp the connection correctly then you'll be fine)

fyi the shielded wire may not solve the CRC issue completely and you may need
to run your cables inside shielded liquidtight conduit.

also you may want to invest in a nice fluke tester to ensure that the cable and
crimp are working properly.

[AFMUG] How common are crc errors on pmp100

2014-11-20 Thread Craig Schmaderer via Af
This is a radio that has been up for 93 days, it is very heavy on traffic,
would you say there is an issue with this radio? It is on a clean tower that
only I am on. There are 4 other canopy radios on this tower receiving sync
from a CTM1. All radios are just CAT5e cable non shielded, length is about
180' tops. Also there is a PTP800 with lmr 400 ran along with it, I never
noticed this before, all other radios are showing about the same number of CRC
errors, is this expectable?

So are you saying that in general all of your radios on pmp100 don’t have any
crcerrors?

Sync is over power and no surge on the line except for the LTM1 built in surge.
Remember, I am seeing this on all 4 radios, but like josh said, .0001%, so I
was really wanting to see if other see this, and those that don't, do you use
shielded cable and ground the drain at the bottom and never see this? Or do
you use sync over timing port and never see errors, it seems weird that already
about 50% think it is an issue and 50% think that it is normal?

That's not normal, unless it was some one time event. Is sync on the timing
port or power port? If on power, do you have a Cat5 surge protector and what
type? If it's a 300SS, get that out of there and put in something newer and
better, or at least bypass it temporarily to see if that's causing the CRC
errors.

If the counters are not incrementing and it only occurs let's say when there's
a nearby lightning strike, then nothing to worry about.

I'd clear the counters and watch..
if the errors climb quickly, you have a problem..
it could have been a single event weeks ago that caused the problem.
it would be nice if we had a mib to monitor the crc errors so we can tell
when they happen.

We don't often see CRC errors on any of our APs, FSK, OFDM, or MIMO.

If you're in lightning territory, check to see if these are coincident with
lightning strikes.

[AFMUG] Best strongest cold weather zip ties

2014-12-02 Thread Craig Schmaderer via Af
Does anyone have cold weather zip ties that they think are super strong and
last like forever :). These are the best ones that I have found over the
years. Just wonder if someone has a brand that they would say last very long
and strong enough for tower runs. I think these are installable at zero
degrees. They never break in the winter. I just wish they last more than 10
years. :).
