My Calix 844E is OK, but the RF seems weak.

Might need upgrading but I have lost he password. The factory password
does not work. May have to default it.

I can see a neighbors router that lives about 1000 feet from me. Wonder if
he can see all my routers.

Any recommendations for routers? Anything new out there that is really
asskicking?

Unifi also works well for me.

I saw similar problems with the 844E here. It didn't cover my house well
when in the basement. I had to move it to a more central location and even
then had hiccups with DLNA streaming on 5ghz. I wasn't running the latest
firmware, I've been meaning to try it again.

All because I'm too lazy to run coax to my bedroom...

With 5GHz, many of you are going to need to get used to running RF power on
low or medium inside your homes. :/

Lower power, more APs.

At least, if you care about throughput and coverage.

BTW, there's been several very positive shootouts between eero, google, and
amplifi lately... UBNT has been doing quite well. I may have to check that
line out just to see what the fuss is. I know they've trademarked some cool
names lately.

Is Unifi all the latest AC dual band etc etc?
I should upgrade the 844 and see if there is a difference.

The new UAP-AC-HD is 802.11AC wave2, and has 3 internal SoCs: one for each
band (2.4/5) and one for Ethernet and management. Dual Ethernet ports,
802.3ad/LACP support for them soon.

Very good AP.

2017-01-09 Thread Joe Novak
I agree Josh. That said my TV was holding -60 with the 844. In a 40mhz
channel with a fairly low noise floor I expected it to work better. Also
tried 20mhz with no change in performance. The DLNA stream is about a 7mbit
stream that requires no hiccups because there is minimal to no buffering.

I never did figure out why it was so finicky. It's also likely the Samsung
TV just did not like the 844 for some reason. Any TV I have used doesn't
really have very good information on wireless statistics so I could only go
by what the router exposes to you.

I installed two Unifi-AC-Lite on the north and south side of my 1450 square
foot house and now everything works as expected... running two 40mhz
channels on low power and have several of these DLNA devices watching live
TV without hiccups on 5ghz.

Might need upgrading but I have lost he password. The factory

I can see a neighbors router that lives about 1000 feet from me.
Wonder if he can see all my routers.

Any recommendations for routers? Anything new out there that is really

Not sure. I don’t think so.

Do you have to pay Calix for the latest 844 firmware?

I should upgrade the 844 and see if there is a difference.

I saw similar problems with the 844E here. It didn't cover my house well when
in the basement. I had to move it to a more central location and even then had
hiccups with DLNA streaming on 5ghz. I wasn't running the latest firmware, I've

All because I'm too lazy to run coax to my bedroom...

I had a Netgear Nighthawk $400 router at first.
Then I got an ASUS $400 router.
Now I just installed a UBNT Amplifi mesh system.

As you know, I have a 10Gbps connection to my house and can easily push 1Gbps.

So the fastest wireless I’ve seen is on the ASUS with around 500Mbps to my Note
5 phone.

That is in the next room.
Up a floor in about half signal I still got around 200Mbps to my phone.

But there were dead spots since the router was in my basement under all the
HVAC ducting.

The Netgear kept having intermittent issues and the interface/app was horrible.
Asus was better and the App was ok, but still not what I wanted.

The UBNT Amplifi solved my dead spot issues.
But the max speed seems to be around 110Mbps wireless
I configured it to separate out the 2 and 5GHz systems since it also didn’t
seem to do a good job at that.
Now there are are like 5 wireless SSIDs available from it.
I chose the one that said MD-5 and it seems to work best for all devices on 5Ghz
It does tend to blip out and reconnect a lot for some reason.
But streaming is improved and the TV on wireless is a lot smoother.

I’m now considering going back to what I had a few years ago, which was using a
couple of UBNT remote AP units and routing through something else.
I do have one of their top of the line 48 port POE switches in my house, but
it’s not the Unifi one, and they don’t act as router either.

Hi Sterling -

Reaching out off list...Let's get to bottom of this as speeds should be
much higher.

Thanks,
Ben

2017-01-09 Thread Sorin Esanu
Since 844E is not available from retail, I am guessing you can ask your source
for the latest firmware (11.1.130 or 11.2.6<- some nicer wifi features).

Also, 844E has a WAP mode too, so you can have one 844E router and several 844E
WAPs. I know from the product manager of the 800 series that they will have at
some point a feature where the WAPs can mesh, if there is no wired connection
to one of them.

Even if radio is not that powerfull, 844E is 4x4 802.11ac and is cheaper than
those $400 routers...

Im partial to the Cambium E400/E500 Series line of products.

Easy to deploy and very feature rich without the extra gear.
