To respond to your comments (tested with OOo1.9.m125 aka beta2 on WinXP SP2,
100% zoom level):
(1) the horizontal bars of [ and ] are too thick.
Cannot confirm this. But note that sometimes one and the same formula is
rendered slightly different. Maybe this explains things.
(2) the two bars of = are not of equal thickness.
Yes, this is true. However there was already an issue dealing with the worse
rendering quality compared with OOo1.1.x: issue 44668.
It's closed in the meantime but the equation sign problem you describe is not
fixed. We should open a new issue spoecific to this?
The bar over the A is not bold.
It is, at least for me with Zoom=100%
The bar over the first a does not cover the complete bracketed expression.
Bar is not the correct thing here. bar{} is supposed to work for one
character only. What you are probably looking for is overline{}, to be found
in the lower left corner of the same symbol dialog. I admit this is a bit
confusing.
The bar over the second a seems more ober the i subscript than the a
Maybe left [ {bar a} rsub {i j} right ] is what you are looking for in the
second case. Here the bar is over the a only, due to the brackets.
Fazit:
- I'ts a bit unlucky you put problems with so different solutions into this
one issue. I close this one as invalid and opened another one (issue 54182)
specifically for the equation sign issue.
- Please recheck with OOo1.9.m125. Should you still find some other rendering
problems, please create specific issues for each of them and include the zoom
level at which you find the rendering problems (At levels other than 100%
formulae tend to look more ugly). Thanks.

rendered slightly different. Maybe this explains things.

Maybe left [ {bar a} rsub {i j} right ] is what you are looking for in the
second case. Here the bar is over the a only, due to the brackets.
Again, that's what I should have done. I has thought of the {} pair a being
rather like a function parenthesis i.e. collecting all the things the function
operates on.

If so, please remove the OOo2.0 installation, reinstall it and do NOT import the old OOo1.1.x settings. It seems that you have put your finger on the communication problem. Your posting of 3-Sep-05 at 03:31 shows that the German version looks completely different. Regarding the substantive problem. I suspect that it arises because I have both Python 2.3.5 and Python 2.4.1 installed and that one of these is being referenced, instead of OOo's builtin version of Python 2.3. To give a more useful report to the user, I have already suggested that some commenting near pythonscript.py 580 be removed from the Python code. I hope that this is of some help. From your screenshot I can see that the matrix there was approx. 12 pt with
600%
zoom level because a 20 pt matix with 600% wouldn't fit on a usualy XGA screen.
But around 12 pt the brackets are indeed OK.
Please check once again with exactly below formula, inserted in Writer using
Insert-formula:
size 60 {bold A = left[alignr matrix{5#6#5##6#7#1##5#1#-1}right]}

The formula toolbar as depicted in the screenshot that matthiasbasler attached is not only the toolbar of the german toolbar, but the toolbar of all versions. The toolbar configuration is not language-dependant. When removing, make sure you don't only uninstall OOo, but to delete the configuration settings for the user as well. Invalid because of the following reasons: * The toolbar is not default. It is due to some misconfiguration on your machine. Whether you did this intentionally or by accident doesn't matter. A standard-installation of OOo doesn't show the toolbar you have. Replication: 1) Format an empty cell (cell X) to Text 2) Input a number into cell X, for example the value 2 3) Input an equation a third cell (cell Z), similar to the following “=X+3” If step 2 is done before step 1 then the operation works as expected meaning the value in cell Z is 5. Will attach a “Test case issue 53833.ods” that demonstrates the replication steps. Problem: The result treats the text cell X as 0, so for our example the result should show 5, but it shows 3. Additional problem, possibly a separate issue: Furthermore when the cell X‘s format is changed from text to number the problem is not fixed. In the spreadsheet itself it shows as a number, but in the equation cell a single quote (‘) is present in front of the number. In out example cell X formatted back to number type would have a value of 2, but when clicked on and viewed in the equation editor it shows up as ‘2. Why it’s an issue: Similar problems have been dismissed in the past see issue 27241 and issue 27241. In general the problem shouldn’t be encountered very often through normal use. When steps 1 through 3 is done in Excel the operation yield a proper output, meaning they perform the operation on the value regardless of input type. Hence, when moving from Microsoft based Excel sheets to Open Office’s, creates a problem in migrating files, since the Excel sheet no longer works in Open Office’s spread sheet (Calc) as it did originally in Microsoft Excel. Further Testing: Use a different math operation -, *, /, SUM etc. Use another cells as input instead of the value 3 we use.
