Hdere is a correction proposal. It works on the MS-Windows version, maybe it
can work
on other OS.

Module uno.py
Insert before the line:
# don't use any functions beyond this point, private section, likely to change
This means line 254 on the version used for OOo 2.2.0

Insert code :
sys.prefix = fileUrlToSystemPath(sys.prefix)

Close entirely OpenOffice. Reopen it with a blank Writer document and run
demoSysPath.py to verify.

I have attached an example document that crashes. The contents of the document
are not commercially sensitive as they are from a public domain document. The
crash is more a "freeze up" than an out-and-out application crash, and it seems
to happen after conversion of a couple of formulae, leaving a LaTeX document
with just a few paragraphs, and OOo frozen up.

It happens every time (I am using OO0 2.2).

The build fails (see errorlog at the end) because the ntquery.h from the WIndows
SDK tries to include the non-existing (nowhere on my system) stgprop.h.

The dmake man page describes the :i macro expansion ( $(MACRO:i) ) as:
i or I - inferred names of targets.

This needs some additional explanation: If the macro value corresponds to a
target
(or prerequisite) the actuall corresponding filename might have been changed
because of the .SOURCE[.suffix] special target.

The following example prints /tmp/aaa if that file exists:

- - makefile.mk - -
SHELL*:=/bin/sh
SHELLFLAGS*:=-ce

.SOURCE : /tmp
QQQ:=aaa

all : aaa
@echo $(QQQ:i)

--- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat Jun 2 01:42:48 +

here is the original message from jkim.

With GCC 3.x, they added libsupc++.so and/or libgcc_s.so, so that
they get __Unwind_SetIP and __Unwind_GetIP symbols. That was an
ancient and ugly hack:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=9874
It is no longer needed and NetBSD and MacOS X removed it already
(local patches?):

http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=42682
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=54460
Likewise we do not need it any more. In fact, it causes build
failure because libsupc++.so does not exist:
%uname -mr
7.0-CURRENT amd64
%ls -l /usr/lib/libsupc++*
r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 213568 5 29 16:43
/usr/lib/libsupc++.a -r--r--r--  1 root  wheel  195868  5 29
16:43 /usr/lib/libsupc++_p.a
Linker tries libsupc++.a instead and it barfs because it is not
compiled with -fPIC, of course. I hope this is enough to justify
the removal.

With gcc3 and FreeBSD you need to link against libsupc++ in module store.
This lib, however, is not
present with gcc4 and therefore linking against it is not possible and not
needed.

@cloph: I think you are talking about another issue, issue 9707 is already
fixed.

As this issue here wasn't reproducible on Linux and Windows it could indeed be
an OOo on Mac OS problem. I already talked with Tino Rachui who currently works
on the clipboard implementation of the native Mac Port. Once he will be able to
test copying and pasting tables and DDE links we will see what it is. Until then
I'll keep an eye on this problem.

[sc-issues] [Issue 78030] Name Define does not work across spreadsheets

--- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Jun 1 20:40:49 +
2007 ---
In Excel spreadsheets, it is possible to "Insert >> Name >> Define" to insert
names which reference cells in other worksheets. This feature also works for
cells in other spreadsheets using a slightly more complex syntax. The syntax
appears to be of the form:
  ='X:\[spreadsheet.xls]sheetname'!$columnletter$rownumber
or
  ='X:\[spreadsheet.xls]sheetname'!Definition
(where Definition is a defined name in the spreadsheet.xls namespace)

When opening a spreadsheet with an external name definition, calc does not
complain about the use of external definitions, nor does it seem to attempt to
locate the definition. (Under Windows, I think Excel has a dialog box which
attempts to assist one in searching for missing spreadsheets. Under Linux, a
logical alternative might be to search the PATH directories for any external
spreadsheets. Or perhaps there is a completely separate OO search path that
should be used.) I think under Excel under Windows, the search process for
spreadsheets is something like: "Open spreadsheets; Directory of referencing
spreadsheet; Dialog search box".

In any case OO (calc) *should* produce an error for names which are defined in
external sheets whose spreadsheet file or worksheet or cell cannot be located.
OO appears to recognize that the sheet contains references to external files and
asks whether the links should be updated, but the name definitions end up as
"#NAME!Definition" even when the referenced spreadsheets are present in the
directory of the referencing spreadsheet. It is not clear whether this is (a)
because OO is not processing the ='Drive:[filename.xls]' portion of the name
(which obviously needs conversion to UNIX format) or (b) whether it fails to
properly perform the Definition (or cell) lookup in the filename.xls namespace.

This is a significant problem for people working with a number of spreadsheets
which have complex cross-spreadsheet name define references as it prevents them
from directly transferring a set of spreadsheets from Excel to Calc.

Presumably there has to be some cleverness in the name resolution process as one
could imagine circular references that would put the lookup process into
infinite loops.

I do have available a complex set of spreadsheets which use this feature which
can be used to test whether the problem has been fixed.

ja:
The erroneous "Letter" size can hardly be coming from the CUPS files, because
when in OO I click on File | Printer Settings, and then click on Properties, it
shows Paper Size is A4. But (without cornouws' workaround) the default page size
is still Letter.

(Problems exists in 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3m211)
Please see attached screenshot - glue points (circled in red) for right
triangle do not seem to be located correctly.
Repro steps:
1. Start Draw, draw right triangle (using Basic Shapes button on Drawing
toolbar).
2. On the same toolbar click Glue Points button - you get incorrectly located
glue points.

When I use a monitor resolution under 1280x1024, the default that Ubuntu assigns
to me, the page displayed in OpenOffice.org Writer and Drawing is bigger than it
should be. At 100% magnification in Print Layout view, the rulers are longer
than real rulers, and drawing objects set to a given size are larger than they
should be. (I made the blue rectangle in the attached screenshot 3 inches wide
in the "Position and Size" dialog box, but as you can see, it's slightly wider
than that.) This effect— i.e. the degree of artificial magnification— increases
as I decrease my screen resolution. It doesn't happen at 1280x1024.

There's an extent to which you could construe this effect as a feature, I guess,
but I think the idea behind Print Layout view is to show what the page will
really look like when it's printed. But it prints at the correct size.

The most heard-of complaint about OOo in my company where we're switching to
OOo, is this issue. We're using spreadsheets for budgetting.

It's very ugly, all these misaligned euro signs :(

Please fix this, people need this feature!

I have to agree with earlier comments - I use custom animations and motion paths
several times a day, and I can't switch to OO if this isn't implemented. It's
the only thing holding me back because it's so essential to my work.

MS Word has a nice feature that allows viewing deleted text in the right margin
of a document instead of as redlined within the text body. This allows
preservation of the document's formatting even through tracked editing. It also
makes it easier to read heavily-edited documents, as text proposed for deletion
is not in the main body of the document. See
http://perrin.socsci.unc.edu/stuff/word2003.jpg as compared to
http://perrin.socsci.unc.edu/stuff/oo2.jpg .

Hi,

the serviceNames thing is a bug.

The unused arguments are part of the signature of the function, as a different
implementation might need this parameters, I leave them there.

Dont know, when I will to a cws to integrate, if you find someelse willing to
integrate it, go ahead. Until this happens, the issue remains assigned to me.

It would be great to have a 'New and Noteworthy' page for each OOo release (and
the dev versions of course) similar to the one of Eclipse, especially since the
new release cycle. As you can see each new feature gets a small nice text and
almost always a screenshot. That's a much better way to transport the new
features into the community then the current list of of changes.

Hi,

yes, it is a bug, but the only negative side effect is from my point of view a
slower pythonpath lookup.

So I wont fix it, because it will be

- difficult to analyze
- probably more difficult to fix
- it will be another patch to the pythonruntime, which already has a larger
number of patches that make these very difficult to maintain (e.g during a
python runtime upgrade).

So I set it to wontfix, but feel free to find someone else to fix and integrate
it.

I have a similar issue that may be related. When opening documents produced in
Word2000/2003, OO 2.0 loses formatting information for sequence fields ("SEQ"
field in Word). In particular, a SEQ field formatted with the "\*alphabetic"
switch (to be displayed as "a, b, c") gets reset to the default arabic "1, 2,
3"). This seems to happen only if the additional switch "\*MERGEFORMAT" in Word
is activated. Fields created in Word without the mergeformat switch are imported
correctly. Test document (test.doc) and OpenOffice screenshot showing the error
attached.

Hi Niklas,

> The change has to be in ScStringCell constructor, not SetString. SetString
> is used only in CorrectSymbolCells and should be removed one day.

that would explain why I saw no win then ;-)

> UniString::intern had one "&" too many, apparently it's never been used.

yep - though, clearly I thought I was testing it ;-)

> If all strings really are different, of course this adds some overhead

sure, particularly because the stl hash is somewhat inefficient; we can prolly
reduce the cost to ~8bytes per string with a custom C impl. there.

> This roughly offsets the hash time, so we don't get slower overall.

Neat, you rock :-)

> For large documents, the reduced memory usage will often improve

Hopefully for pivot tables it'll have a large effect; quite possibly we want to
do more string comparisons there using some 'check-pointers-first' variant of an
equality check.

The change has to be in ScStringCell constructor, not SetString. SetString is
used only in CorrectSymbolCells and should be removed one day.

UniString::intern had one "&" too many, apparently it's never been used.

If all strings really are different, of course this adds some overhead, also
memory-wise, but I suppose that's not the common case, and the savings for
typical list-style documents are significant.

There's always a bit of CPU-time overhead for the hash. Not strictly related, I
changed ScXMLTextPContext to pass simple-case text strings without an
intermediate OUStringBuffer. This roughly offsets the hash time, so we don't get
slower overall. For large documents, the reduced memory usage will often improve
performance in terms of elapsed time.

The changes are in CWS "dr54".

nice; so my vote (in general) would be to bloat and slow down the microsoft
importer, rather than the OO.o core :-) I believe in the past I wrote a little
util to map LOG(n) -> LOG10(n) for ODF export [ and some other missing argument
handling ]: can we do the same for XL import & just normalize it nicely ?

Heh, how much time does it take to do so? Definitely not 9 months to 2.4 ;-)

> You think it's a shame that I don't integrate it because I KNOW that at
> least for the bootstrap variables the patch will definetly break existing
> functionality that is already used ?

What _exactly_ do you mean? Did you see my most recent changes (well, recent,
from Tue Aug 22 14:46:11 + 2006) that use bootstraprc and exactly the same
OSL pipe as OOo without the external splash [even with the bug in storing the
md5sum in some cases]. Please tell me which variables/scenario _exactly_ break
and I'll fix it. So far I've heard just that commandline can contain value
that overrides the 'UserInstallation' variable [fixable in about the same time
you can write me 'Fix it for me please']; other cases were just 'I know of
scenarios' without actually telling them.

Of course - we can statically link to the entire sal [patch to do so is an easy
homework doable in few hours] if we agree that the slight ugliness in issue
70166 is worth it.

> What we can do is:
>
> 1) Collect and define the currently working scenarios

Yes, perfectly OK for me. Let's say this can take 2 mandays of your work; I
guess you don't expect _us_ to collect the scenarios, right? ;-)

> 2) Test your patch on a CWS

1 manday.

> and see which scenarios will break (and there
> will be at least 2 scenarios I'm aware of).

Exactly, please!

> 3) Find a solution how to fix the problems detect at 2).

3 mandays.

Even if this is too optimistic, we can have it in a month at most, or not?

Hi Takashi,

I'm implementing JIS and ASC now, do you happen to have a test case Excel
document using those functions that you could attach to this issue? If you don't
have Excel, a simple UTF-8 text file containing the characters that should be
converted would do as well, one line for JIS conversion and one line for ASC
conversion, From what I understood, converting back and forth should produce
identical strings, correct?

Thanks
  Eike

New charts are now created without border again as in the old chart. Thus the
old border problem does not occur in default cases but only when the user does a
special formatting. For that more seldom case of the old border paint error I
created issue 78025.

[ui-issues] open source contributors needed

2007-06-01 Thread Paula Bach
I am looking for responses from a larger number of participants who have
contributed to an open source project where usability is considered.

As a graduate student in the College of IST at Penn State University, I am
researching the role of usability expertise in Free/Libre/Open source Software
(FLOSS) projects. This includes looking at how usability issues are handled.
Responses from developers and usability engineers are essential, as well as
from other contributors, including users and user/developers.

The survey will take no longer than 15 to 20 minutes, and your responses will
help me (and others) understand how open source contributors approach usability
in FLOSS projects. If you would like to complete the survey, please go to:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=gAODMj1MTFDFfAxhbOUXcg%3d%3d

At the end of the survey you will have to option to participate later in an
interview and/or to receive the results of the survey.

Thanks in advance for your participation. Please feel free to contact me if you
have any questions or concerns.

with maho's vanilla 2.2, I'm getting some redraw issues when scrolling text when
the window is on the second screen. When the ooo writer window is on the primary
display, I get no problems.

This bug seems to be caused by several rounding errors while transforming from
twips to pixel or 100thmm and back etc.. Maybe it needs to be splitted for the
different applications. There are similar issues already:
Issue 60962 OLE Object gets "partial border" during screen presentation
Issue 62173 border missing in page zoom when dragging a border aligned object
away

Insert a chart in writer, impress or calc.
Go to edit mode and format the chart area to have a border line.
Play around with the zoom factor a little
-> there are several cases where one or several borders are not painted

@kendy, @mmeks:

Guys - do you really want me to integrate this into the master just because it
runs well with your OOo distribution ?

Without ensuring that other currently working scenarios won't break ?

You think it's a shame that I don't integrate it because I KNOW that at least
for the bootstrap variables the patch will definetly break existing
functionality that is already used ?

I should integrate it, introduce some regression and fix it afterwards because
your distribution will not be affected by the regression regardless what
happens to other users of OOo that use it in a different scenario that's
currently working ?

You must be kidding ;-)

What we can do is:

1) Collect and define the currently working scenarios
2) Test your patch on a CWS and see which scenarios will break (and there will
be at least 2 scenarios I'm aware of).
3) Find a solution how to fix the problems detect at 2).

Ok, after a reaalllyy long debugging session I think I understand what happened:
- SRC680_m211 uses the boost-1.30.2 headers
- the boost header file "macosx.hpp" includes "posix_features.hpp"
- unless TARGET_CARBON is defined, which we have for obvious reasons in the VCL
aqua build
- without "posix_features.hpp" boost doesn't know that the OS has pthread
support
- when boost doesn't know which threading library to use it undefines
BOOST_HAS_THREADS
- boost/detail/shared_count.hpp without BOOST_HAS_THREADS doesn't use pthread
mutexes
- so the class sp_counted_base does no longer contain a mutex member mtx_
=>
- this base class now has a different memory layout in VCL than other libraries
=>
- a different memory layout of classes with the same name does not seem to be
too much of a problem,
when the class is only used inline
- when inlining is disabled (e.g. for -O0 or also for -O -fno-default-inline)
then the problem rears its
ugly head very forcefully

So even in a build without debug=true the problem was there, only much smaller.
With objects of type
shared_counter not being mutex protected the problem would have shown only for
highly
multithreaded use cases.

Newer versions of boost's macos.hpp header file do not disable pthread mutexes
for shared_counter
(some related info can be found here:
http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2004/10/8110.php).

We should either upgrade the boost library or patch our boost macos.hpp include
file to remove the
stupid TARGET_CARBON check.
