[gsl-issues] [Issue 88376] X11: Wrong character mappi ng for some fonts
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=88376 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat Aug 23 06:27:25 + 2008 --- To help identify duplicates to this issue (e.g. issue 92843 is a candidate) I'd like to point out the subtle details to make it understandable out why CJK, Indic and non-ASCII were impacted differently by this same root cause: Fonts nowadays usually have an unicode mapping, many still have an old macos compatibility mapping like apple_roman and some important CJK fonts still contain non-unicode legacy charmaps, FcFreeTypeCharIndex() changed the FT_Face's charmap by iterating through the ones available in the font until it either hit once or until all available charmaps missed. The result of that unexpected side effect was that - non-ASCII latin misses resulted in the FT_Face being changed to apple_roman encoding - CJK fonts often got the regular unicode mapping back, but sometimes a legacy CJK mapping hit first - Indic, Thai, Hebrew, etc. almost certainly switched back to the unicode mapping at the first glyph hit Now if the scenario resulted in FT_Face being changed back to a unicode mapping everything was fine again. If it resulted in e.g. apple_roman then the problem seen in this issue happened. In the case of just one legacy CJK mapping being available there usually was no problem too, unless the mapping from unicode to legacy mapping differed between OOo and FC. In the case of both unicode maps and legacy maps being available in the font, the scenario of many glyph misses caused occassional switches between these charmaps. Escpecially since these big mappings often have a slightly different coverage. The root cause is easily understable, but many of resulting bug scenarios are so complex to be mind bending... though the mapping trouble outlined above is complex enough it is further complicated by an LRU-like caching of the usually expensive mapping results. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Normally, I will adjust the left and right spacing in Frame Style: Formula settings to 0.00cm in order to make the whole document have a better look. But this causes some inconvenience for me. Why? Because I have accustomed to Press F4 to input formula and then Press ESC twice back to text context. F4 is the shortcut key I have assigned for insert Math formula. I will press ESC twice, this is because, the first one is to escape from math command window and the second ESC is to have the formula just input losing focus so as to type new text afterwards. The problem is, after two ESC, the I cursor will stop before the formula if I have set the left spacing in Frame Style: Formula to 0. Obviously, I have to move the cursor to the end firstly in order to type new text. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I googled but found nothing like that at all. Double click on all of the executables except one doesn't work. Double click works only on OpenOffice.org Writer icon which says Access is denied. Originally no file type was assigned to .odt files and in general OpenOffice.org user profile is not created (supposedly C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Openoffice.org2..). I changed .odt file associations manually to the Writer. The same: Access is denied. Can it be because of my ATA hard drives? If this is helpful: OOo_2.4.1_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar.gz converted with alien from the regular RPMs is OK on my Debian hard drive. I haven't tried anything but the Writer, though. BUT OOo_3.0.0beta2_20080707_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar.gz crashes right on start up. It would be very usefull to get fields from various tables when runnig the form wizzard. Currently if you like to get a form that calls two or more tables in the same database form, you have to make manual associations of tables. This is a very anoying fact that requires some technicall knowlege about how to do it. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Yesterday (finally) I have accepted to update my OOo2.4.0 Italian to OOo2.4.1 Italian using the internal update notification component. Apart from downloading the file twice(?) for me, it went trough install without further problems, wasn't that my other accounts could *AGAIN* not start any OOo document via Windows Explorer. A quick test revealed the exact same problem I had after upgrading to 2.4.0, that is all my permissions on HKCR were replaced by a single entry for 'Everyone' and all the others gone. Just before the update to 2.4.1 everything was working fine. I have redone the install from scratch and I have the same problem. Since no other software was installed aside, I am quite convinced it can be isolated to the settings embedded in the MSI Windows Installer package. No difference exists between installing with JRE or without (my case). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To an unfamiliar person, it would seem obvious that All files already means to open all the files and therefore that file type is redundant and need not be selected. Similarly, File Save As Save dialog Browse for other folders produces a drop-down menu showing ODF Text Document (.odt) as a file type and next to it is another control for File type. While a tooltip is helpful, only one exists, so no distinction is made, and anyway too few people use tooptips. So, please edit File type to Save as file type and label the drop-down menu that defaults to ODF Text Document (.odt) as Show files of type. I'm using OOo Writer 2.4.0, without Java Runtime Environment, on Linux Fedora Core 4. Thanks. -- Nick - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=93054 Issue #|93054 Summary|open/save-as: dialog: file type: add short list Component|framework Version|OOo 2.4.0 Platform|PC URL| OS/Version|Linux Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|ENHANCEMENT Priority|P3 Subcomponent|ui Assigned to|tm Reported by|nicklevinson --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat Aug 23 19:52:20 + 2008 --- Being able to select from all the possible filters is very helpful, but many users will find a subset of filters to be almost always sufficient, and many find numbers of clicks to be oppressive (I think some people should get a life, but maybe they'd retort the same thing and demand fewer clicks.) When I open a Text Encoded file, it takes about half a dozen clicks to scroll down to that item and then select it in the file type list. It would be efficient for users if a user could specify for a short list which filters they commonly use. The shortlist could ship with the most likely as defaults, such as OOo native format, and users could then add or subtract from the shortlist. The full list would remain available. For example, I might configure a list to have only one file type, my favorite. I could then go to the full list for the unusual need. If the shortlist built itself by OOo reading a configuration file written in plain text, sysadmins configuring many installations of OOo for institutional or departmental use could give everyone the same shortlist that fits their practices; users could then add and subtract to customize individually. To prevent the institutionally-written configuration file from having a nonexistent file type by error, such as when misspelled, the shortlist seen by the user should consist of only what's in the config list and is also in the master file type list (Boolean AND). For extra points, if OOo has any self-diagnostic capabilities, the diagnosis could highlight any inconsistency between the shortlist config file and the master list. But the important part of the enhancement is the availability of a shortlist to reduce the amount of clicking. This might help also for other dialogs. I rarely use OOo other than Writer, but I imagine this could be useful for the other applications, too. Most serious: Engering gravis (as field-name delimitor) the cursor will somehow get caught. After entering another character the cursor jumps back to the gravis accent. Less serious but annoying: the control-keys command and alt combined with arrows don't work as usually (jumping words and the like). Maybe unrelated, but also a SQL-Editor issue: the screen refresh insid the editor window sometimes doesn't work properly. In such a case it is necessary to move the cursor to the (invisible) end of the text and enter a new-line. Only when the source-query is stored as view on the server can it be used inside a base query. This might be necessary, but then it shouldn't be possible to load the source query through the standard dialogue. In this connection: it is not possible to rename a view stored on the server. I copied it to my Win95a computer with Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 and Canon i560's native printer driver locally and printed with the Print as image checkbox on. That froze the computer (not the mouse pointer), so each time the Cancel button failed and I had to end the task via ctrl-alt-del. Unchecking Print as Image (after setting up again to print) allowed me to go ahead with printing. The problem did not occur on my Win98SE computer with Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.1 printing to the same printer through the 95a computer connected via direct cable or a public WinXP computer printing to a networked printer; printing with and without the option worked each time. My OOo Linux laptop is not set up for printing, so I couldn't test it on that platform. The problem is that many PDFs, perhaps all made using Adobe's software, require Print as image or many word spaces disappear, resulting in wordsgettingmashedsolidlytogether. Thus, I leave that on as a default. Having to uncheck that for Writer-made PDFs only is not an obvious step. I used OOo Writer 2.4.0 without Java Runtime Environment on Linux Fedora Core 4 on a Pentium 4 laptop to export as PDF and set these options: Writer File menu Export as PDF PDF Options dialog: -- General tab General Create PDF form Submit format PDF -- Security tab Printing High resolution -- Security tab Changes Not permitted It appears that Writer-exported PDFs differ from Adobe-made PDFs in some way that afflicts printing on older sotfware. When these documents are opened with a PDF viewer, the PDF viewer page counter shows the current page number counting from the cover page as Page 1 (i.e.: 3), in place of the actual number written in the page (i.e.: iii). [sw-issues] [Issue 93030] Writer crashes when insert ing a picture from a particular drive

And YES, if I open the image file using the Fileopen in the main OOo window, it crashes too. So this is NOT exactly a insert problem. BTW I also carried out another experiment, and came across a slightly different crash: I copied the jpg to another folder that did NOT have the problem. This time, I could at least use the command to insert the picture. But before OOo could ACTUALLY show the inserted picture in the file, it crashed. But at least this time it lasted a little more (till I could insert the picture). In yet another repeat of the experiment, it actually showed the picture for a couple of seconds, and then crashed. (This image was also taken from a normal folder.) To conclude, I see FOUR different crashes; probably depending on the source folder- 1. Crash as soon as I navigate to the partition/folder (even before I actually insert the image) 2. Crash just after the insertion, but BEFORE OOo shows the inserted picture in the file. 3. Crash after OOo shows the inserted picture for 2-3 seconds. 4. Crash when I open the image using fileopen command from the starting window of OOo. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Create a new document. 2. Create a frame. 3. Type in some text with both capital letters and lower case letters, for example Here is Some Text. 4. Highlight the text. 5. Choose Format-Character from menu. 6. Choose Font Effects tab. 7. Note that the Effects dropdown (where one might choose Small Capitals for example) is completely missing from the window. 8. If you choose Format-Character-Font Effects when text is selected NOT in a frame, you do get an Effects dropdown. 9. If you copy text with a font effect (like small capitals) from outside a frame and paste it into a frame, the font effect is lost. CONCLUSION: I would expect font effects to work everywhere, including in frames. They certainly do in Microsoft Word, so imported documents that use font effects (like Small Capitals) are not properly imported. However, this seems odd regardless of whether you are importing. These effects should just be available in frames. I see no design reason that they are absent. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
