Follow these steps to reproduce the problem

1. Create a new Writer document
2. Save the document as an odt file
3. Choose File/Properties
4. In the Description tab under Title type anything, eg "hello"
5. Click OK
6. Having made that change in the document there is no way to save the change
as you cannot choose File/Save - it is greyed out.
7. Close the document. It wrongly allows you to close the document even
though
you have made a change to it.

The attached document is a save of a two column document, but it isn't saved
correctly. You can reproduce as follows.

1. Open the attached document.
2. Click at the top of the second page
3. Press SHIFT-PAGE-DOWN until the second page is all highlighted
4. Press CTRL-X to cut the second page
5. Click at the end of the table on page 1
6. Choose Insert/Manual Break and then click Column Break and click OK
7. Click top of the second column on page 1
8. Press CTRL-V to paste
9. Now there are two columns
10. Delete any carriage returns on the second page so that there is no longer a
second page.
11. Save the document

Having saved the document, if you then close it and re-open it, it isn't as you
saved it. The second column is now on page 2.

Follows these steps and oocalc hangs dead. All you can do is kill it off and
restart.

1. Create a new spreadsheet
2. At cell B1 enter: =sum(b2:b3)
3. Click on cell B1 and see above in the value area it shows =SUM(B2:B3)
4. Click on the value =SUM(B2:B3), drag mouse to select it
5. Press Control-C to copy
6. Press enter
7. Click on the column header for column A, right-click to get the menu and
choose Delete Columns
8. Now click on cell B1, go to the value display field above where the value
was copied from and press Control-V
9. The software is hung...dead

And unlike you, it also works fine for me on WinXP in Wordpad. I'll attach
another screen shot.

Maybe that is because I have the font installed and OO isn't respecting the
embedded font at all

The actual font file is http://www.aaa.net.au/campbell/cua_.ttf

FYI both the linux box and the windows box have the truetype font installed
locally in addition to being embedded in the document, but strangely with OO on
windows, OO doesn't list the font in its fonts menu. Word and Wordpad do. I
have no idea why OO is having some trouble recognising this font.

It works fine on Word in Windows, but not OO.

I will also attach screenshots of what I see on windows and linux.

OK I am running on a linux platform (Fedora 8) and this problem is still very
much present. I've updated the platform and OS now, and ticking the reopen item
(I trust that is the right thing to do in the case that I have narrowed the bug
in that regard).

I loaded the presentation linked from this case just now and seriously it took
about 40 seconds before the application responded to the clicks on the text in
slide 6 I had done, during which there was high CPU utilisation. Then I went to
slides 7 and 8 and did the same thing and the times weren't as high as 40
seconds but they were still bad.

In some circumstances, Impress fails to save deletions properly, because having
deleted text from the presentation, it reappears after saving the presentation
and reloading it.

For example, try this:

1. download http://www.aaa.net.au/campbell/BeautifulPhotos.odp
2. open it in Impress and you can see that each slide has a picture with a text
box over the top - the text isn't part of the photos
3. there are some performance problems editing the text in the document as
reported in http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=85551 but ignore
those for now
4. on any of the slides, try clicking three times on the text and then
highlighting all the text with CTRL-A, then pressing delete so that the text
goes away
5. now save the presentation
6. close it
7. load it back in

Actual Result:

I find that the deleted text is BACK after save/load even though I had deleted
the text.

Workaround:

I find that if instead of pressing delete to delete the text, I press SPACE
after highlighting the text, then this issue doesn't occur.

Impress exhibits extreme slowness in some circumstances when editing quite
simple presentations, even on a high performance machine with 2Gb of RAM.

For example, try this:

1. download http://www.aaa.net.au/campbell/BeautifulPhotos.odp
2. open it in Impress and you can see that each slide has a picture with a text
box over the top - the text isn't part of the photos
3. go down to slide 6
4. starting with slide 6, try clicking three times on the text and then
highlighting all the text with CTRL-A, then pressing delete
5. for some of the slides, the performance is really bad...I've had it sitting
there burning 100% CPU for about 30 seconds after clicking the text before it
shows that you can edit it

Actual Result:

I find that for some of the screens at least, the performance is rather
dreadful, and you end up having to wait for quite a long time.

I also find that having completely chopped the text out as described, if I save
the file, close it, and then reload it from the saved file, the text appears
back again even though I had deleted it. I will open that in another case.

I will attach a file which contains a broken table.

1. Load the attached document into OpenOffice 2.3 writer
2. Examine page two where there is a table under the heading "Are you covering
all the learning areas / subjects?"
3. Notice that the table has a vertical line through the middle of column one

This vertical line through the middle of column one is not present when opening
the document with word.

dcam -> es I'm sorry I can't be more helpful but I've had so many things on
this past week or so, I can't remember exactly what I was doing to cause the
crash. Unfortunately OpenOffice on Fedora 8 didn't/doesn't auto-report crashes
to you, so I saved the crash file and reported it to you later, hoping you'd be
able to see by the trace detail in the file. Next time I'll take notes. Also,
when you speak of "accessibility", I don't really know what it is, though under
Tools/Options I see some accessibility options. I don't really know what you
mean when you say "and what if accessibility is off".

The following steps can be used to reproduce what seems to be a complete lockup
in OpenOffice.

I will attach a zip file.

1. Extract the zip file into a folder
2. Open the html content in firefox (I'm using 2.0.0.9)
3. Select the entire content with CTRL-A, and copy with CTRL-C
4. Start OpenOffice 2.3 and a new Writer document
5. Paste the content into the document

At this point OpenOffice is hung, and it stays that way for a very long time.
I've waited substantial time and it doesn't seem to come out of it.

Pasting a reasonably large amount of text into a table columns should result in
the table growing to be able to display all the text.

However, openoffice can fail to expand table columns to overflow text to
subsequent pages of table continuation.

I will attach an example document which consists of an empty table and some
text.

If you select all the text and copy it, and then paste it into the top left
table cell, you can see that the table expands to one page, but no further.

AHHH - I believe I've made some progress on this issue.

The MOUSE POINTER MOVEMENT SPEED is a significant variable!

If you set the mouse pointer speed high, then it jumps a certain number of
pixels at a time, and it actually jumps over the tolerance for selecting the
vertical table lines in OpenOffice.

If you set the mouse pointer speed low, then you can't see this problem.

The same problem is not visible in MS word where it works even when zoomed out a
long way with high mouse pointer speed.

I've got the same problem.

The behaviour is that some time after starting openoffice, the cpu utilisation
goes high and then stays high, even if there are no documents open at all. The
only way to stop the high cpu utilisation is to close down openoffice.

It is extremely annoying.

My screen is 1680x1050 while a 17" laptop, so the pixel density is high.

This problem is reproducible for me at 100% zoom. Perhaps for others it is not
reproduceable because their pixel density is not so high.

If I set my zoom to 200% then I don't see the problem, but if I set it to 100%
or lower I see this problem.

I suspect that others will be able to reproduce this if you take the zoom down
even lower for screens that have a lower pixel density.

Any chance of you experimenting with the attachment I created in this case,
playing with the zoom scale of the document? I find that the column-dividers
that are affected change with the zoom scale.

Some small odt documents can take a long time to load.

I will attach a document with this problem.

The document is 17 kilobytes in size but it takes ages to load. It eventually
does load, but in a disproportionately long time.

I am using WinXP SP2.

[sw-issues] [Issue 15265] default character style fo r bullet should be None

It is actually quite simple (though not intuitive) to set the character style to
None, just do this:

1. Choose menu Format/Bullets and Numbering
2. Choose Options tab
3. Change Character Style to None

But having said that, I disagree that this is a satisfactory solution.

Setting the default character style for bullets to None solves the problem to a
certain extent, but is still problematic because the bullet point size usually
needs to be smaller in font size than the rest of the line!!

This is especially visible at large font sizes (eg 72), where having set the
character style of the bullet point to None, the size of the bullet point is
ridiculously large.

I believe the solution must be that the bullet point font size needs to
configurable to be a percentage of the size of the font of the line on which it
appears.

I checked and this seems to be the default intuitive behaviour seen in that
other wordprocessor that is still quite popular.

The word document whose URL is supplied in this case doesn't open properly with
OpenOffice.

Perhaps this document is an old-format or mac-format document file or something,
but OpenOffice opens it as a plaintext file, with binary gibberish everywhere.

Word 2003 for Windows successfully opens the file with formatting, recognising
it as a document.

I don't know whether this type of word document type is beyond spec for
OpenOffice to open, but reporting it anyway in case it should be.

Hmm...ok... I just quit OpenOffice and restarted it and loaded that document,
and I get the same behaviour.

This is Windows XP SP2.

Interestingly enough, when I move the mouse over any of the other vertical lines
apart from the middle, the mouse pointer changes and I get a little message
saying "Adjust table column".

On the middle line, when I put the pointer over the middle vertical line and not
over the horizontal lines, it says "Adjust table row".

Hmm, I just tried adjusting the zoom to 150%, and if I do that, then I can
adjust the middle vertical line. If I then adjust the middle vertical line back
down to 100% I cannot adjust it, though I can adjust all the others.

Table columns can be resized by dragging the vertical lines defining the column
with the mouse.

If you move the mouse above the vertical lines, then the mouse pointer changes
to indicate the "Adjust table column" function, and you can then click and drag
the vertical lines

However, sometimes, the mouse pointer does not change and you cannot resize the
column.

I will attach a document with a table with four columns. All the vertical lines
in the table can be moved with the mouse except for the middle one. WEIRD.

This has to be a bug!

There are some weird space behaviours in OpenOffice.

For example, load the attached document and then press END to go the end of the
line, and then press backspace. It looks like it is doing nothing. Keep going
as it actually is doing something. Eventually it will end up deleting the
spaces visibly.

Another thing to try:
1. Open a new document
2. Hold down the space bar and watch it insert a whole lot of spaces, but as
soon as it wraps over the line, it goes to the beginning of the line, not to the
next line. The more spaces you put in, the more backspaces it requires to
remove them.

When you're entering text and a line wraps around to another line, very
frequently some corrupt graphics is temporarily displayed in the editing window.

The behaviour is completely repeatable and I below descripe instructions to
reproduce.

For your information my video driver is "ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 Series".

I will attach a bitmap that shows the problem with a big red arrow pointing to
it.

I will also attach the source document.

To reproduce the problem using the source document:
1. Position the cursor at the end of the third-last dot-point, the one starting
with "Proclaim".
2. Hold down shift and press HOME
3. Press CTRL-X to cut the text, and you observe that the dot point then only
has one line of text
4. Press CTRL-V to paste the text
5. Watch as the problem is displayed in the window for a couple seconds, and
then it goes away.

A word document that successfully loads and displays with correct indentation in
Word does not load with correct indentation in OpenOffice.

I will attach a sample document to this case.

This document was saved from Word 2000, but the embedded picture object was
likely created by Word 97. It seems that if Word 2000 edits the picture object
then it recreates it in a form that is readable by OpenOffice, but if Word 2000
doesn't edit the picture object, then it stays in a form that is unreadable by
OpenOffice.

The diagram in the document I will attach doesn't display correctly in
OpenOffice 2.0 beta. I looked at the other similar reports and this one seems
different from those, so I'm creating a new report.

However if I load it into Word 2000 and make a small change in the picture and
save the change, then openoffice 2.0beta loads it ok.

I don't know which version of word created this document, but it may have been
Word 97.

Hi,

The diagram was loaded from a word document.

I really don't know what kind of object it is, and I don't know how to find out
what kind it is. Can OpenOffice tell me?

You may be interested to note that if you remove some of the text in the
document, the problem no longer occurs, so that makes me think that the object
itself isn't at fault.

Some diagrams actually shrink when you enlarge them.

Follow these steps to reproduce:
1. Open the file which I will attach.
2. Scroll down to the diagram
3. Hold down shift and drag the bottom right corner of the diagram to enlarge
the diagram as much as you can.
4. Release the mouse button, then release shift
5. Notice that the diagram is now smaller than when you started

The table of contents in the document I will attach has a "Heading 1" and a
"Heading 2" but the table of contents only shows the heading 2.

If I recreate the document from scratch then the problem doesn't occur. It
sounds like some sort of style corruption to me.

This document was originally imported from Word.

I'm experiencing the same problem with captions on an embedded OLE object
