I just tried 2 reproduce on debian squeeze with kde4 and opengl (debian OO
3.2.1-11).

Generating the graphs takes about 2 sec with AA on by dual core 3GHz.

Tried to export to xls and view with Excel (under wine) but the indirect
addressing used doesn't seem to work in Excel. Another bug?

Unfortunately I can not compare now. But would not be surprised is MS caches the
bitmap after rendering.

When I add a note to a Draw drawing and then export to pdf the note is lost.

This occors even when using FileExport as PDF with Export Notes checked.

On Kubuntu Karmic with OO 3.1.1 grbabing the object will take 30 seconds (AA on
is 6x slower).

The same thing on Debian Squeeze with OO 3.2.0 will take 3 seconds (AA), With AA
off less then 0.5 seconds (6x slower).

It appears major improvement happened in OO 3.2. Good news.

But still AA is 6x slower, which you will notice on large or complex drawings.
The original question was: can we turn off AA on drags to improve speed.

Want to try with the original drawing now? There are about 3 elements in the
original. And it get's exponentially slower.

Yes that's a lot. Inkscape does it, but then I need to import svg into OO, which
is still problamatic..

I check the example on https://bugs.launchpad.net/openoffice/+bug/499020 and did
not find real problems there.

Instead try to work a bit with my example Silkscreen.odg.

This is about 1/4 of a silkscreen (a layer of a PCB board), the original is
exponentially slower. It is produced from Gerber files, printed to pdf using
cups-pdf, then imported into OpenOffice. You can get roughly the same results by
printing to svg, then import into OO as svg.

You will notice that just picking up the group and draging (yeah in the
semi-transparent mode I mean) takes about 5 seconds to respond with AA turned
off. The same takes 20 seconds with AA on. Then drop the object, go get some
coffee and wait for OO to respond again.

I kid you not.

The group consists of 7619 element, which may seem much, but how fast can you
count when you've got 4 cores running at 2GHz. And the original pdf had no
problems even though it's size was 8MB.

I think you are missing the point here:

When I try to drag (move) a group of objects it can take 10 sec for OO to
responds. In the mean time it seems to freeze.

I do not think this is 'defined behavior'. I guess that the responsiveness of OO
is not defined in terms of time (should start dragging within 0.1 seconds) or
not defined at all.

Works as defined can not really be an excuse when the behavior has not been
completely defined.

As said: it is this slow, whether used on a dual core 1.2GHz or a 1.2GHz duron.

The only way to do real work now is to disable AA completely. Which is obviously
worse then during move, copy etc.

Did you actually try it with complex objects? Do you need one from me?

In Draw 3.0.1 on Debian when I perform a drag action it is by default
constrained.

I mean: moves are constrained to horizontal/vertical, resizes are constrained to
keeping the aspect ratio.

When I want to draw a rectangle it is constrained to a square, and so on.

To do unconstrained drags I need to use shift-drag.

Under Windows this behavior is opposite. Using shift then switches to the
constrained action.

Using both platforms this behavior is confusing to me. Can a select the Windows
behavior under Linux?

I have about 300 fonts.

After looking at the installed extensions during installation I decided there
are to many.

Now I have disabled the unnecessary ones and now the problem SEEMED to have gone
away.

After checking the same on another machine we suspected the Wiki Publisher
extension to cause the problem.

But now it seem thats opening toolsextension manager and then enabling or
disabling extensions makes the problem go away - UNTIL you restart Writer.

In Writer the context menu takes about 15 sec. to pop up when clicking on a word
(no spelling error) in Writer. In the mean time Writer seems to be hanging. The
whole idea of context menus is to have quick access to the applicable options.

The expected context menu shows 'Default Formatting' on the top line.

Note then when there is a spelling error the context menu pops op within
seconds with suggestions for corrections.

This behavior did not occur with OO 2.4.2.

Right olo!

But after you saved it, and editted with Inkscape, you will want to reimport
it. And then restore all the image properties, like position, anchor, etc.

I do that all the time, even with embedded Draw objects (since you can not zoom
inside Writer). And it is a pain.

I import svg into Draw quite a lot, using the svg-import-1.2.2 extension.

This allows me to print to my virtual svg printer (a modified virtual pdf
printer) from any application, like electronic schematics drawing programs,
Autocad etc.

I've noticed that many time 'closed' shapes get broken in the process and
attributed this to the import filter.

But now I noticed that it may be caused by Draw it self!

As an example I included a 'Zener.svg'. With Inkscape (or firefox) you can see
it is a simple drawing. After importing this into draw it looks like
'Zener_before_save.pdf'.

Save the file to 'Zener.odg' all is still well. But then closing and reopening
'Zener.odg' I get 'Zener_after_save_reopen.pdf'.

Conclusion: Draw does not save this shape well, or breaks it open reopening.

This problem appears on Linux as well as Windows, and using OO 2.4.1, 2.4.2,
3.0.0 and 3.0.1.

A big hug for fixes this!

I think mba is not holding a discussion but providing a solution.

Note how similar it is to M$ OLE solution:
- each object type can be embedded in an OLE container as the container does not
need to know the contents
- each object provides a server for edit (embedded edit) and open (standalone
edit)
- the object's server provides a preview for display and printing (bitmap, wmf
or emf)
- better would be: the objects server proves a rasterizer for printing and
displaying (see bryancole above)

For OO:
- using inkscape for 'edit' (I mean editting embedded in f.i. writer) won't work
as inkscape is not a OLE server
- but it will work for 'open' as mba described
- who needs 'edit'? Draw does only 'edit' and not 'open' which is a big
frustration when trying to edit a complex, large draw object embedded in writer.

I have just verified on go-oo 3.0 the problem occurs exactly the same as with
OO 2.4.1.

Additionally I found the following:

- If you go into the object (you will need to zoon in 400% before opening the
object), you will note the fat lines are fine inside the object.
- selecting the fat lines and right-click- split they will be broken done
partly to simple lines
- exitting the object, all lines will still be shown as hair lines
- creating a pdf from the document will show the split up lines are fat

Appearently there is also a difference between what is displayed on screen and
what is exported to pdf.

The problem occurs using OO 2.4.1 on debian Linux and Windows XP. I have not
tested on OO 3.0 as it is not in Debian testing yet. Now idea how go-oo handles
this either.

The attached drawings are obtained after importing SVG drawings using the SVG
import extension.

I have obviously taken just a few polygons from the original drawing which was
proprietary. The source was an Autocad drawing printed to a SVG virtual printer.
The SVG itself looks OK in Inkscape.

Importing the SVG leads to the file 'original.odg' which for the purpose of this
example should be considered OK.
Exporting this to PDF shows what I get on my printer which is also OK.

Copy-paste to writer lead to the upper drawing in Writer (embedded.odt), which
is made up of grouped writer drawing elements and is also OK as can easily be
seen in the PDF embedded.pdf).

However, I normally prefer to paste the drawing as a Draw 8 object, because this
embeds the original drawing in Writer, which I can later edit in Draw if needed.
Also since it is an object, text wraps around the entire object.

The problem is the rendering of the Draw 8 object (the bottom drawing). As can
be seen the line widths are lost and set to minimal for certain poly lines, but
not for simple lines. You will notice that breaking these polylines into simple
lines will restore the line widths as rendered by writer, but then the lines are
broken and can not be glued back.

You can imagine that the result of a complete imported Autocad drawings looks
quite unreadable as line widths are used in technical drawings to distinguish
between solid parts and all kinds of other symbols, arrows, size indicators etc.

I really hope this can be fixed before 3.0.1.

Thanks

The above would be true if there was an easy way to export svg's, edit them in
a seperate tool and them reimport into OO while keeping placement and other
attributes intact.

At present it is already possible to import svg's using the SVG import
extension. This gives 95% accurate imports and it is slow (java?). Even if you
don't like OO Draw (which I happen to do) you can quickly and easily make small
changes to the imported SVG.

It seems to me we are on the last mile to 100% accurate imports. Compiled code
would improve the speed a great deal.

Just tested with Debian Lenny (openoffice 2.4.1-6). No problem here.

I have a 1280x1024 screen in portrait mode. When closing either maximized, or
sized just a little smaller then the maximum window size and then switching to
1024x768 (also portrait mode) openoffice starts with the window maximized to
full screen.

Imho this is the desired behavior.

Greets,

Reproduced on Win XP, 2.4.1 + nl language pack 2.4.1rc2.

Note that pressing v prior to ctrl-v is essential.

A normal ctrl-c, ctrl-v sequence does not create the problem.

er:

I am aware that Task Manager is not ideal, but is the only tool I have for this.

Note that when at the end of the day all documents are closed still almost 30MB
is actually allocated more that at the start.

The code needed to handle no documents is the same, so you could say that
30MB has leaked. If that is caused by unnecesarrily loaded code, or by data
structures that should have been freed makes no difference to my poor old
computer.

You may get the right feeling if you try XP Pro with 512MB of RAM for a day,
and try to do some actual office work, virus scannner, e-mail, adobe reader, MS
Word reader, internet explorer and Openoffice simultaneously (respectively:
43MB, 18MB, 60MB, 13MB, 28MB, 69MB - and some 160MB needed by XP kernel memory).

Bye for now,

kpalagin,

repeatedly opening a new (empty) writer document and closing it does not
noticably increase memory use. in 2.4.0 (XP).

With Calc I noticed memory use suddenly decreasing, and virtually memory
increasing after closing the spread sheet.

I'll record memory use today at startup and end of day after a days work and
let you know the result.

Started working today with according to Task Manager:
Process Memory VMM
start soffice.bin 41084kB 17992kB
end soffice.bin 69144kB 51468kB

in both cases with empty OO window (all documents closed).

If this is not a memory leak, then at least large objects remain allocated that
are not related to an open document.

Openoffice (Windows) comes with a Shell Extension that allows document
properties to be accessed from outside OO.

This has several usefull uses:
-Some properties can be browsed from Explorer
-Explorer can display a preview of the document, espcially Signed documents
show a stamp on signed documents
-Indexing services have access to keywords, document title etc.

The document properties can also be displayed in the Detailed view of explorer.
Normally this view only shows filename, date, size etc. However Explorer allows
to add additional properties to this view. This allows the user to sort
documents by the internal document title or other exposed properties.

A usefull feature would be to show also names and dates of the users that
signed the document. This allows to quickly see if all needed signature have
been placed on documents.

Moreover, currently when documents have been signed by multiple users, OO's
internal save date becomes the date the first user signed the document. for
unsigned documents the file system date is used. This causes inconsistancy
between file system date and the date shown in the document.

Proposed behavior:
a property Signed On (the date of the first signature)
a property Signed By (the names of all the users that put a signture on it).

Our application:
We have written an app that uses the Shell Extensions to Extract Author,
Filename, Title, Keywords and date.
This quickly creates a html document with links to all the documents in a
folder and its sub-folders and the relavant properties.

Right now it shows (incorrectly) the file system date, which is diffent from
the Changed Date field shown on printed documents.

This tools is internally used for registering documents as required by QA
systems like ISO9000. We believe such functionality will benefit others
considering electronically signed documents as well.

I'm sorry! I need to correct the bug report above (Sat Apr 5 21:25:21 +
2008).

Please disregard all of that.

I have now traced down the problem to the following:
- relative path checked
- open with PDF reader checked
- path contains *spaces*.

The spaces are converted to %20, this is correct for URI but incorrect for
remote goto actions (generated because of open with PDF reader). This can
easily be reproduced.

Friends,

I used WinXP, 2.4.0 US + 2.4rc6 dutch.

The relative link was to a pdf document, created by importing a html document
which contains relative links into a section (i.e. a linked html document).

The link shows as a full path (starting with file:///) in the odt, although it
is actually relative as can be seen when moving the document to another
location. In other word similar to rainer's above, but ending with pdf).

I only checked the options described, so exporting then to pdf, with PDF/A-1
UNchecked.

rainer, in your case I wonder how the string inside the pdf actually looks. I
would expect (./linked%20path/linked.pdf)

It may be the case that your pdf viewer accepts this (as does kpdf), but Acrobat
does not.

This new feature in 2.4 seems to be a little broken. I propose to reopen it.

Here is my case: import a html document with relative url's to pdf's into
Writer.
When viewing the link in Writer the link shows as an absolute path, but this
path is built from the path of the current writer document.

As a result can be:
Linux: file:///path/file.pdf
Linux: smb:///path/file.pdf
Windows: file:///c:\path\file.pdf

Depending on how the folder is mounted/connected to.

Now exporting the pdf:
-on the Windows machine
-relative path checked
- open with PDF reader checked
a pdf file is created with a link with a relative path using remote goto actions
with file:///./file.pdf.

Opening the file in Acrobat on Windows and clicking the link gives an error that
the file does not exist.
Opening on Linux as an embedded pdf (in Acrobat 8) in konqueror opens the link
fine.
Opening on Linux directly in Acrobat 8 and clicking the link also gives and
error.

I have not checked exporting the pdf from the Linux version (waiting for 2.4.0
to go into testing on Debian). But from the documentation I get that smb:
(kioslave in KDE) is not supported yet.

Yes, and it still occurs with OO2.3.1 on Debian Lenny with xserver.xorg 1.3
(1:7.2-5) the lastest testing xerver.

Check out the attachment

What I have is a symbol made using a group of polylines. Editing, or during
presentation with HW acc. turned off, displays just fine.

During presentation with HW acc. turned on the whole symbol fill black.

Converting the symbol to curves does not help, converting to bitmap turns the
symbol into black filled permanently.

Found the problem on 2 separate debian lenny systems 1, with modern intel
graphics controller, other on very old ati.

Seems to be reproducible and persistent across OO versions.

My guess: the problem is in Impress.

When recording revisions new text is shown underlined and deleted text is shown
strike through by default. Additionally the paragraph is marked.

We would like the possibility to only mark the changed paragraph.

This would require new text to be unmarked. This is already possibly using the
attribute none in the revision marking setup.

* Additionaly it requires the attribute hidden for deleted text.

* Note 1: the best we can do at this time is to mark deleted text with
attribute background but this shows a large white gap in place of deleted
text.

* Note 2: currently you can mark deleted text with the attribute none. This
allow to show added and deleted text without any distinction. Great, but why
would we need that?

Frank,

The issue is the leak, not the foot print. Actually the startup memory use from
OO2.3 is not so much larger then 2.2.1.

I think opening a spreadsheet and then closing it again but ending up with 54 +
28 - 40 - 20 = 22MB memory more in use can be called a memory leak (but not
necessarily).
Similar effects occur under WinXP Pro.

Metrics have been determined using taskman.exe

I don't think the memory use is so small that it goes unnoticed. Actually when
you work all day with OpenOffice (problem may be in Writer too) you will notice
the problem in other more qualitative ways (the disk access LED).

I will gladly help to reproduce this problem if you would please reopen it.

This problem has been found using postgresql over jdbc (both in OO2.0.4 on
debian and 2.3 on w2k and wxp).

Step 1
Here's the results for Autofilter on a table:

With postgresql over JDBC you need to use the mixed mode.
Using default the error is: error boolean = integer (it tries to compare
boolean field billable = 1)
Using SQLand Access the error is: error setting filter criterium (it tries
to compare Billable IS TRUE)
Using Mixed, Autofilter works fine.

Step 2
Using Autofilter on a form in Mixed mode also works.

Step 3
But using Formfilter on a form (still in mixed mode): Error: operator does not
exist: boolean = integer.

Once a boolean filter is applied using the Autofilter, you can go to FormFilter
and apply additional (non boolean) filters without error.

Yes, it happens under WinXP as well. It may very well be a duplicate of issue
81988.

It seems to be related to the timing during the startup fase. This will make it
difficult to reproduce on faster machines I expect. Nevertheless I think it is
an important issue, which did not occur with previous version of OO.

I have noticed the same problem under XP Pro, but not consistently. There seems
to be a relation with the activity going while the file is being opened. It
could be that in that case I tried to open a 3rd document while the 2nd is still
being loaded.

I can confirm that I saw multiple copies of soffice.exe and soffice.bin in the
task manager.

I'll try to see if this can be reproduced.

With 1 writer document open, double click in explorer on a second writer
document.

The document appears to open, but then OO freezes.

CPU load is 0%. Windows Taskbar shows 2 instances of soffice.exe and 2 instances
of soffice.bin.

Same happens with Calc open and then opening a second writer.

After a long while (enough to write this report) the bin and exe with the
smaller memory footprint close, and the freeze ends (OO works normally again)

Start with an empty Calc document uses about 40MB of memory + 20MB of VM
(virtual memory) in soffice.bin. Closing that and starting a new empty Calc doc
goes to the same memory footprint.

Then closing the empty document, and opening a very simple spreadsheet (no
calculations, just text) increases the memory footprint to 60MB + 34 MB. Closing
that again (no windows open anymore) the footprint goes to 54MB + 28MB.

This is a much larger footprint for OO2.3 compared to 2.2.1

Confirmed in OOo 2.2.1 as well:

Importing a html into a section in a Writer document leaves the relative URL's
in order. No problem here.

Exporting to PDF turns them into an absolute file URL.

That is really to bad! I'm using this procedure to create a pdf document that
is and Table of Contents of other PDF documents.

When the datapilot is setup to connect to a datasource of type query that
contains a named parameter (WHERE column = :criterium) of unnamed (WHERE column
= ?) it fails with a message like unknown parameter or so.

The expected behavior is to pop up the parameter dialog box.

This occurs with the databases mentioned in the url above, as well as postgresql
using the JDBC driver (my project).

I've tested the fix with OO 2.2 RC3 dutch w2k and it appears to fix this
problem. Connection to postgresql using jdbc seems to be working fine now.
Tested viewing tables and forms applying filters.

Not tested: data entry.

Thanks for the fix.

Base crashes after a long wait when viewing a table (or more generally when
retrieving data by opening a table or by opening a form) from our postgresql
server through the jdbc driver.

Up to OO 2.1 the jdbc driver to postgresql has been the most usable (in terms
of supporting date/time fields, boolean fields etc.). With 2.2 RC3 (dutch
version) it seems to have become unusable.

Haven't been able to test it with english or later versions.

Take care,

When running a form with a table control only the number of records retrieved
is initially shown.

I.e. when there is room on the grid for 10 records the navigator shows 10
(which probably reflects the number of records actually retrieved).

However, navigating to the last records (in my case 68) updates the number of
records to 68.

The user may incorrectly assume by this behavior all available records are
displayed - 58 have been lost.

When using forms you can apply autofilters, and formfilters, but you can not
create a custom filter easily to f.i. enter a start and end date.

It would be *very* usefull to be able to add unbound controls on a form (say
StartDate and EndDate) and then have the datasource on the form use those
controls to filter the records, i.e.

select * from atable where Date :StartDate and Date :EndDate

It appears to my from the SDK (see DevelopersGuide chapter 13.5.1 section
Parameters) that this can be done by adding the controls to some list of
listeners (using com.sun.star.form.XDatabaseParameterBroadcaster) so that they
get resolved when the query runs (done by
com.sun.star.form.XDatabaseParameterListeners).

However, it is unclear what code to use to do that, and the SDK mentions at
this time it can not be done from Basic.

To me it seems that unbound controls on the form should *always* by listening
to queries that require input. Why else would they be there?

Also it is not clear (to me) from the SDK if the unbound control is listening
to queries run by other forms or if a special syntax is needed to access a
control on another form (like MS Access does).

I think it would be very nice to be able to print the red lined cells as they
are shown on screen.

Maybe it it even possible to have the notes (info about the change) printed
in a seprate list.

But there is also something to say to keep Compare Documents and Record Changes
the same as in Writer.

I'll vote for being able to print what I see on screen now!

However, Windows XP viewer show no problems with the metafile, nor does IE7.

Hello Frank,

I have sent a Bill of Materials will sensive information deleted.

The second version is best to demonstrate my problem.

Cell D4 and D8 show what I mean: they have been formatted with automatic reflow
(I'm using the dutch version so hope this is the correct translation).

The rows have been formatted with Optimal Row Height. On last save each cell
had the correct height. However on opening the file again, text falls out of
the cell.

Worse, this happens in print preview and print as well.

You can reproduce this with selecting ROWS 1 - 11, FormatRowOptimal Row
heightSaveFileReload

Thank for helping,
