It seems that this issue needs a bit more of discussion, probably including our
Writer experts (QA and DEV). As Feature Freeze for OOo 2.3 was almost one week
ago, I retarget this one to 2.4. Bettina, please can you coordinate the
investigation for this issue?

Apparently this request is still valid - at least in the vanilla OOo build, you
cannot select a different source range.

I just discussed this with Niklas. We both agree that the source range selection
should be offered in the More section of the dialog box - equivalent to the
result range selection. Otherwise the UI of the original dialog becomes too
cluttered, as the help text (Drag the fields) looses it's prominent
position.

At the moment, there are no other comments from User Experience regarding this
dialog design.

[sc-issues] [Issue 67243] Merge center toolbar but ton

Generally I prefer to to change the just merge into merge and center. We
need to make sure, any side effects are covered.
I briefly evaluated the current implementation of this patch (with a Novell OOo
2.0.4 build from Jan 12). The feature works as expected, but it does so
initially only. What doesn't work yet:
- The second use of the merge center toolbar icon doesn't restore the
original state. Instead, after breaking a merge apart, the first cell remains
centered (but should be what it was before merging, or - in case a style was
applied - what the default formatting for this style is).
- The menu command toggle indicates merged and centered even if the cell is
just merged and not centered. Instead, the command Merge cells should work as
a toggle, too. If cells are just merged and not centered, the menu needs to show
that.
- The icon for merge and center needs to be changed, because the functionality
has changed. Additionally, Writer offers the functionality to merge cells, too,
and it uses this (old) icon already.
- The menu should contain the new icon.

So much about the existing functionality. What about the idea of making the menu
button a drop-down button, offering the new functionality in addition to the old
one? Plus, we can offer an additional one, that centers content not only
horizontally, but vertically, too (in case multiple rows are selected).

Just my 2 cents. Lutz.

Sorry, I completely missed this one! And even worse, I won't be able to take
care of this issue for the OOo 2.2 release (the one that has UI freeze on Dec
28), as pretty much everyone will be on their holiday break, soon. I guess
that's yet another one of these issues for which UX can be blamed for
blocking... and it would be right to do so... sigh.

I am all in favor of improving the Data Pilot feature, as I experience it's
limitations often enough in my day-to-day work. But as Niklas said, and as I
could see from Michael's screen shot (which was a brilliant idea! as UX people
can't just press F5 and build the whole thing to see the changes), it requires
some thoughts about where and how to give the user control over the data source
area.

I promise I will get on this in January, as soon as I am back. Again, my
apologies for not having paid sufficient attention to this one.

Drawing a curve behaves very different, depending on whether you draw from top
to bottom or vice versa.

In the attached bug doc, example 1 shows how it works right (draw from 1 to 2
and then drag the curve to 3).

Example 2 shows an error: the curvy part of the curve runs straight in one
single segment.

Though, in this example, there seems to be a work around (draw from 3 to 2 and
then drag to 1), in other cases it might not be as easy to find an appropriate
way. Please fix this issue. Thanks!

Regarding the Objekt Einfügen thing: Objekt Einfügen does not stand
isolated, so it cannot be read as such. The full command is Ansicht -
Symbolleisten - Objekt Einfügen. In this context it becomes clear that Objekt
Einfügen is just the title of the toolbar, not a command to insert an object.
If it was a command to insert an object, Objekt einfügen would be the correct
string.

Looking more closely at the actual toolbar, it becomes questionable if this
toolbar makes sense at all. It only contains a subset of the objects that can be
inserted via menu, and one may think about integrating this toolbar as a
drop-down button into the Einfügen toolbar.

Christian, what is your take on this?

Sorry for getting on this one so late. OOo 2.1 is history, so I change the
target to 2.x.

Unfortunately, this is a collection of issues, so we need to pass it on amongst
the involved parties. Let's start with Christian Jansen (CJ), who needs to fix
some specs first, before this can be handed over to Oliver Specht (OS) for
implementation. Some menu commands haven't been specified yet. For these we
don't need a new specification.

I agree with most changes, but a few I cannot accept. Here is my edited version
of the list.

IN WRITER:

Suchen Ersetzen - Suchen ersetzen
- O.K. - OS please change.

OLE Objekt - OLE-Objekt
- O.K. but implemented in SO8U4 (OOo 2.1) already; - FIXED

Alles Aktualisieren - Alles aktualisieren (in the Extras menu)
- O.K. - OS please change.

IN CALC:

Verschieben/Kopieren - Verschieben/kopieren (in Bearbeiten, Tabelle)
- O.K. - OS please change.

Form Objekt - Form-Objekt (in Ansicht, Symbolleisten)
- NO! This toolbar somehow survived the toolbar re-design for OOo2.0 and should
no longer be there. It is completely redundant today, and I will write a
separate issue to eliminate it.

Formular Entwurf - Formular-Entwurf (in Ansicht, Symbolleisten)
- O.K., but needs to be changed in Writer, Impress, and Draw, too.
- CJ please change all four instances in the spec

Objekt Einfügen - Objekt einfügen (in Ansicht, Symbolleisten)
- NO. Here, Objekt Einfügen is used as the title of the toolbar Objekt
Einfügen, not as a command to insert an object. In the latter, your suggestion
would be right, in this case it isn't.

Text Format - Textformat (in Ansicht, Symbolleisten)
- O.K., but here the spec is wrong: different from the actual implementation,
the spec features two toolbars with the German title Format (sections 5.2.2
and 5.2.30). The German title for second one should be Textformat.
- CJ please change the spec.

Zelle Einfügen - Zelle Einfügen (in Ansicht, Symbolleisten)
- NO! I guess you meant einfügen, but this is similar to Objekt Einfügen
above.

IN IMPRESS:

Master Ansicht - Master-Ansicht (in Ansicht, Symbolleisten)
- O.K., spec says something different, but Master-Ansicht looks better to me.
- CJ, please change the spec.

Text Format - Textformat (in Ansicht, Symbolleisten)
- the spec just says Format
- CJ please decide which string to use, Format or Textformat. If it is
Textformat, please change the spec. Otherwise just comment here.

IN BASE:

Bericht an Text Dokument - Bericht an Textdokument
- O.K., this is even a bug against the spec.
- OS please fix

The toolbar Form Object seems to be a relict from before the OOo2.0 re-design
of toolbars. All functions are covered in new form related toolbars today. The
toolbar content spec doesn't list it. So please eliminate it from Calc.

Christian, can we have this fix for the next OOo release? The deadline for 2.1
(update 5) just passed by, and I don't expect this to be major effort. Please
can you try to schedule for 2.2? Thanks.

I am not sure if Liz would be happy about the summary, because as one of our
native (English) speakers she did the English version of these messages. ;-)

But anyway, I agree to most of the proposed changes, with one exception. In my
opinion, the will now start to recover piece is plain wrong. In German and in
English. At the time the user reads this sentence, the recovery process is
already running. In many cases the process is done before the user has finished
reading. So I would like to have a different wording here.

Christian, please can you make all this go into the right spec and forward it to
engineering?

Writer menu Einfügen - Formatierungszeichen

Hi Matthias. Though I didn't find any spec related to this part of Writer's
Insert menu, you know this area better than I do. Please check if any spec
update is required and forward to the respective development engineer.

If the menu string hasn't been spec'ed yet, there is no need to do so at this
time. In this case just forward the issue to DEV. Thanks.

I read three issues from the patches: the German title of the Insert Object
toolbar in Writer, Writer/Global and Calc. However, I don't understand what the
localize.sdf.diff patch is supposed to fix.

Florian, please can you explain?

Christian: The Calc issue needs to be fixed in the spec first. In chapter
5.2.25, please change the German toolbar title from Objekt Einfügen to Objekt
einfügen. Then DEV needs to fix the strings. Please can you manage this?
Thanks.

Please don't use the attached patch.

This is broken in German and English. The message hasn't been specified so far,
so we don't need to create a new spec just to fix this. Please change both
strings as follows:

English (U.S.): Change background settings for all pages?

German: Hintergrundeinstellungen für alle Seiten ändern?

Hi Berit. Thanks for forwarding this request. Just to clarify the scope of this:
we are talking about very few (~ 2 out of 10) sample macros/scripts, which
provide explanatory text. The remaining macros don't provide any text at all.

Unfortunately, these descriptions are mere development features - from
developers for developers, so to speak. In fact they are generated by comments
in the script source code. As with all our scripts and macros, we don't localize
commentary strings. So this is not a missing localization, but it works as
designed.

If there are serious requests to localize these strings we have two choices:
1. delete them entirely, so even the English version would not provide them any
more, or
2. invest engineering time into creating a L10N-friendly resource system, that
is capable of handling source code comments, too.

In my opinion, the second option doesn't pay off. If the English strings don't
cause too much trouble, I would vote for keeping everything as is. If you tell
us that this is unacceptable, we have to go with option #1.

Two strings are cut off. To access the dialog, assign a custom animation to an

Spent several weeks of inactivity on this one. Sorry for that.

Getting back to this issue ater some time really is hard because of the many
iterations. I wish we could work this out in a more straightforward manner. Can
we agree on attaching screen shotsfrom the entire toolbar area only?

I still support the general goal of improving the display of insensitized icons,
ideally by complying with UI guidelines of the respective desktop. And I still
insist on matching the requirement to be able to easily distinguish insensitized
icons from sensitized ones.

So how can we move forward with this? Let's set the target to a more realistic
one, as it seems that there are still some tweaks necessary. 2.0.4 seems pretty
realistic.

Further, I would like to have a solution not only for one special case (icon
theme X on desktop Y), but a more general one that applies to all supported
desktops and works well with all major icon themes.

So what is the exact status on the patch? Judging from the latest complete
screen shots we haven't quite achieved a good distinguishability between
insensitized and sensizized icons, right?

What can I do to make this issue move forward?

Stefan, please confirm the missing icons. In my build (SO8PP2) all icons appear
exactly the way they are supposed to (in both, the German and English version).
Please note that not every menu item has an icon assigned.

There has never been a spec document for the menu icons, so StarOffice 8 Product
Update 2 should be taken as de facto specification.

The first issue actually is an issue in SO8PP2 and OOo2.0.2. The spec
(http://specs.openoffice.org/writer/mail_merge/mailmerge_specification.sxw)
states in section 6.3.1: Liegt noch keine

The second is not an issue. Zurzeit looks horrible to me, too. But it is
correct according to the new German spelling.

Please fix the typo that is decribed above.

Frank, please take care of this one. I strongly object against using an
abbreviation for the word pixel! This is different to milliseconds, which are
abbreviated as ms, because that's a widely known abbreviation. px is mostly
unknown, so we cannot use it. We are designing this software for users, not for
translation processes.

I am most confident that you will find a good solution. Thanks. Lutz.

Hi Michael. Are you sure that the most recent screen shot really is what you
wanted to post?
http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/35095/gnome-industrial-new.png
still looks exactly the same as ...-old.png on my system...

To re-iterate on my comments: I admit that the current method of visualizing
disabled icons makes some/many icons no longer recognizable. OK, they are
disabled anyway, so why would anyone want to recognize them anyway? Assuming
that there is a valid need to do so, we need to find a better way to fade
these icons.

The requitrements so far are:
- a disabled icon must be clearly distinguishable from an enabled one
- a disabled icon must still be recognizable, i.e. users need to be able to
identify the sunbject of the icon image

These requirements seem to be contradictuous per se, but looking at current
desktops like Windows and Gnome proves that it is possible to satisfay them both
at once. Judging from
http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/19718/old-to-new.png,
there seems to be at least one solution that is far mor effective than the one
depicted in all the Writer screenshots.

Would it be helpful to focus our discussion on measurable aspects, like the
contrast ratio must not be lower than x:y or similar?

Michael, I do not want to block this issue. In order to make a fast but well
educated decision, I need to have a better picture of the result in comparison
to what OOo looks like today. I am trying to get some examples from our Sun
developers, but whatever you can provide helps me to speed up my decision.

In detail I need screen shots from full Writer windows (incl. window decoration)
at a size of approx. 1,024 x 400-something, so that the full standard toolbars
are visible.

Here are the scenarios I need to or I'd like to look at:

1. Must see:
- Windows XP (Luna Theme) with and without patch
- Windows XP (High Contrast Theme) with and without patch
- JDS 3 (Default Theme) with and without patch
- JDS 3 (High Contrast Theme) with and without patch

2. Like to see:
- Windows XP (Classic Theme) with and without patch
- Gnome (Default Theme) with and without patch
- Gnome (High Contrast Theme) with and without patch

3. Optional see (would be nice to see, but these are really optional):
- Windows Vista February build (Default Theme) with and without patch
- KDE, recent release (Default Theme) with and without patch
- KDE, recent release (High Contrast Theme) with and without patch

Sounds like a lot? It in fact is, but as Bill's comment already indicates, there
is quite some context to look at in this case. And it certainly is less
expensive to look at all these cases upfront, rather than discovering
insufficiencies later (or even letting our users discover them).

Michael and Tor. Thanks for the screen shots. Looking at them, I strongly object
against integrating the patch.

I agree that the disabled icons (insenitized, as you call them) can better be
recognized with your patch applied. But they don't distinguish well enough vs.
enabled (sensitized?) icons any more.

I showed the screen shots to two graphic designers - in a neutral fashion - and
both immediately rejected the new design.

The benefit of the old solution is, that the contrast between a disabled icon
and the icon background is very low. So without even looking at a particular
icon, users automatically avoid them by focussing on enabled icons only, which
are marked by a clear contrast ratio between icon and background.

The down side of your current solution becomes most obvious, the fewer colors an
icon uses. There are plenty of blackwhite icons in OOo's default theme, and in
High Contrast mode even more. With your patch applied, these can no longer
easyly be distinguised from enabled icons.

Instead of just overlaying the icon with an every second pixel gray layer, the
entire icon needs to be desaturized some way. Maybe it would be worth a try to
go into this direction instead of your current approach?

In Writer, the Compare Documents feature doesn't work for binary formats any
more. According to Andreas Martens, we seem to have forgotten some lines of code
to enable document comparison for the old binary formats.

To reproduce this, open a text document. Then select the menu command Edit -
Compare Document... and select an .sdw file. Nothing happens.

I suggest to fix this in SO8PP3 / OOo2.0.3.

In OOo1.x it was possible to insert objects into a text document that didn't
appear on the page, e.g. by doing copypaste from Draw.

When loading such docs into OOo1.x, they look exactly the way were created.

Opening such docs in OOo2(.0.2) now changes the position of these objects, so
that they appear whithin the page. This unwanted behaviour (docs look different
after office update) occurrs e.g. with Sun's letter template.

Please introduce some compatibility handling for SO7/OOo1.x documents in
SO8/OOo2.x.

Loading an OOo1.x document into OOo2.x reveals an outline for some bitmap
objects. This outline wasn't displayed in OOo1.x. This issue is about how to
treat outline attributes when loading OOo1.x documents into OOo2.x.

In the above scenario, the user expects bitmap objects to appear exactly the
same in OOo2.x, as they did in OOo1.x. Though the outline attribute for bitmap
objects wasn't supported in OOo1.x, it was possible to create it. When loading
such documents into OOo2.x, the outline attribute shall be set to invisible,
instead of displaying an outline.

Just for your reference:
Due to an OOo1.x bug (that has been fixed sometime before OOo2.0.2), it is
fairly easy to generate an outline attribute for bitmap objects, though OOo1.x
normally doesn't support this.

In OOo1.x, do this:
- Create drawing with a bitmap and a drawing shape;
- Select both and copy via clipboard into e.g. Writer doc
- ungroup in Writer
Now the bitmap has an outline attribute, wich is accessible via the user
interface.

see attached screen shot and preso; in presentation mode using direct-x there
are tiny white spaces between the polygon segments, which make the line appear
fragemented. Even without the white spaces the polygon pieces look gestckelt
- can't we achieve a smoother line appearance?

The state of the buttons in the 3D Effects dialog in Draw/Impress can be toggled
(switched on / switched off). This state isn't shown with native UI theme
adoption, e.g. under WinXP using the Luna theme, or under KDE.

Create a new Writer or Calc document. Insert data from the URL below into the
document:

There are 2 ways to do this:

1. In Writer choose Insert - File... (but make sure Tools - Options -
StarOffice - General - Use StarOffice Dialogs is checked).

or, 2. In Calc choose Insert - Link to external data..., paste the URL into
the URL text box and press Enter. (but make sure that ...Use StarOffice
Dialogs is NOT checked).

After a while OOo tells you: Daten konnten nicht ber das Internet gelesen
werden. Serverfehlermeldung: Error reading response headers: Line too long.

What's most strange, if you replace Spreadsheet by Word+processor in the
URL, it works. In Writer it also works if you use the operating system File Open
dialog. And, of course, the URL below can be loaded without any modification by
Firefox.

Since I am the originator for this issue, I am going to change the target to
Office Later. It clearly is an improvement of the existing feature, and it
hasn't been reported as critical issue by customers so far.

Bettina, please can you take care of this feature request in the same way as
with other RFEs too? I changed the target to OOo Later, as it is certainly too
late for OOo 2.0, and I would like to have a better effort estimation first.

This issue is about the icon titles that are displayed when you go to the menu
Visible Buttons for the Calc formatting toolbar. The icons for inserting a row
or a column are labeled just Rows and Columns, nor Insert rows and Insert
columns (in German: Zeilen einfgen and Spalten einfgen).

LHO - CJ: Ich changed both, priority and target of this issue. Ingo is right,
we do need a spec for this. The spec needs to cover not only this minor change,
but the entire structure of our module selection, so we can track these changes
in one place instead of many single specs. Please clarify if we already have
such a document or if we need to write a new spec from scratch. In the spec,
please redefine the module structure for the small device / mobile device
section, and check if there are similar issues in other areas of our module
tree.

Please see the spec at
http://specs.openoffice.org/appwide/migration/spec_migration.sxw, section 8.3.
The Welcome page in the First Start wizard should have the Button Next
selected by default. At least in the German language version of m71s1, this
isn't the case. Instead, the step 1. Wilkommen has got the focus - which
doesn't make any sense.

I should have gone through the entire wizard first... the control focus issue
appears throughout the entire wizard. Whenever one of the wizard steps is
displayed, the initial focus is always in the navigation area, but not on
Navigation buttons or other sensible actions.

The specification covers only the first and the third step/page (Welcome,
Migration). The default control focus for the other pages needs to be defined in
the spec. Here's what I propose:

8.4 (License): default focus should be on Scroll Down button
8.6 (User Name): default focus should be on First Name text field
8.7 (Registration): default focus should be on Finish button

Additionally there is a malfunctioning shortcut on the second page (License):
When pressing [Alt-B] in the German version (for Bl??ttern), the License text
doesn't scroll down. Instead, pressing the button repeatedly only moves the
focus back and forth between the button Bl??ttern and the License display
area.
