Opened a .docx file for editing, turned on Change Recording, and made several
changes. I added a Comment to the document, then saved it as .docx. When I
re-opened the document, the note was not there. I re-entered it and saved the
document as .doc. When I re-opened the .doc file, the note was where I expected
it to be.

Seven years! What does one have to do to get a relatively easy addition put in
place? I wish I understood how to do this myself; I'd quickly do it. I've looked
at the code, and cannot figure out how to make a particular format render. I can
find how to add formats to the format list, but can't find where you render a
particular format for display. This should affect spreadsheets, Writer tables,
formatted fields on Base, and the ReportWriter.

Since this request/problem has to do with my request for the accounting number
format in issue http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=110774 I will
transfer my attention to the parent of that one,
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=15773 .

The problem with this still exists, however, in that some user-defined formats
are not saved properly.

At least as far back as MS Office XP, Excel has had an Accounting number
format, which aligns currency fields by their decimal points, and aligns
currency symbols at the left of the cell. This format is totally missing from
Calc, and I've never been able to duplicate it with any built-in codes. This is
a serious lack that should be addressed as soon as possible.

open/import of this document in docx format crashes OOo, Happens in Ubuntu 3.1
version as well as Windows version 3.1 and 3.2RC1. The document is not
complicated, has two text tables with 4 columns, each table has a heading in row
1 that spans 3 columns. The tables are formatted to have no borders, so the
resulting printout looks like two numbered lists with a max depth of 3 levels.

Manually examining the xml in the word folder of the docx shows no obvious
problems.

Since you didn't answer my question either, I will reopen.

I was attempting to produce a fixed width currency field where the currency
symbol is at the left, the value right-justified with leading blanks and no
decimal places. I could not find any nice way to do that.

User-defined number format lost on save/reopen. Input a currency format of $
???;$ ???- is not preserved on a save / reopen of document. Same
happens if this format is used in a text table with Writer. My objective in
using this format is to have a fixed-width, right=justified number displayed. I
use a monospaced font in the cell.

This is still an issue and, as reported above, it is related to following page
style. The following page style is not exported, all pages get the first page
style. This results in any header or footer on the following page(s) being lost.

This is a pretty important issue. Can we get a fix soon?

Thanks!

When using Ctrl-click to select multiple controls, the selection grabs
individual controls of grouped controls. That is, open a form with multiple
controls. If they are grouped (e.g., a label and a text box), then using
Ctrl-click does not select the group, but only the individual part clicked on. I
expect to be able to add multiple grouped controls in this manner, but it is
made more difficult because I have to ctrl-click on each individual part of each
grouped control.

Sending a document that has a frame that has borders on one, two or three sides
does not export correctly. Such frames are exported with borders on all sides,
or the frame is not exported at all. I will attach an example of this.

I have tried to reproduce this with 2.0.4, without success. Also, the
instructions Frank gave about resetting the Help Agent do not seem to work for
me. If the reset works, there is no indication that anything was done, unless
the little triangle in the top left of the reset button means something. It's
not a very good interface, IMO.

It might help to know what the referenced help ID is about.

The URL refers to a WinWord document that does not open properly in OOo 2.0.4

The document is one page in MS Word XP, but opens as 18 pages in OOo, and does
not show the complete contents of the table that makes up a form for the user to
fill in.

I'm surprised at your response.

That's about the best I can do to describe the little image that pops up on the
bottom right when you use some feature of OOo that you've never used before,
that OOo thinks you should know more about. When you click on it, you get
context-sensitive help about the feature you just used.

In my case, I had recently installed the 2.0.4 RC1, and in this instance, I
opened the datasources viewer (F4), used it, then closed it. That's when the
image popped up, so I clicked it to see what I had done that was new. I got
the referenced message. It cannot be reproduced without wiping out my OOo
installation and user configuration files so that a new installation will think
I have not done this particular thing again.

@of: My mistake. I intended this to be a RFE. The idea is to reduce the
opportunity for user confusion as to whether to download the with JRE or
without JRE product, and the initial size of the download. Only the without
JRE product would need to be placed on the mirrors, and the user who needed JRE
would be prompted to download and/or install it the first time he/she invoked a
function that required it. In fact, the installation could be totally automated
by a wizard, making life easier for less savvy users.

OOo ought to install JRE for user when/if user invokes a function of the suite
that needs it. This is how MS and some other application programmers implement
options for the user at installation time. The feature can be left flagged as
install on demand, and when the user needs it, it will be downloaded and
installed for him, at his discretion. This would probably mean the user would
need admin rights, unless OOo could appropriate them at that time.

I just tested the file again on _m173, and got the same results as when first
tested. The Pivot Chart function does not work yet. Also, the Data Pilot
(Pivot Table function in OOo) does not look as nice or complete as Excel's. For
example, when this workbook is opened in Excel (XP), the source table for the
Pivot Table has the source data selected with a gray background, making it plain
that the pivot table is based on that part of the table. Calc does not do that,
rather, it leaves no visual indication of what part of the table was used to
create the pivot table.

A MS Word document (I don't know which version) imports into OOo 2.0.2
incorrectly. I opened the document with Word 2002 (XP) and saved it again as
Word 2002/97/95 RTF (.doc), and opened that file with OOo, with the expected
correct results. I will attach both documents. The logo graphic on page one is
the problem. It imports with a huge right margin that pushes the heading text
off the page to the right.

Upon clicking Open icon from Standard Toolbar or from File-Open menu, I receive
an error stating The operation on path was started with an invalid
parameter. I click OK or close the error dialog and get the normal Open dialog.

The path specified is on a DVD-RAM drive, which works perfectly.

The currently open document (Writer) is also located on the same drive and same
path.

error occurs on both RC2 and RC3, making me doubt that it is a checksum error.

Okay, this is interesting: I tried to uninstall RC1 from the control
panel-add/remove programs, and got the exact same error as I get trying to
install RC2 and RC3. Does this shed further light on the problem?

Please reopen.

This is repeatable with rc3, too.

I suggest checking the ramifications of my configuration. I do not have my
Windows on C: drive, but on D:, and I have 2.0.2RC1 installed in the standard
way. In the newer versions RC2 and RC3, the install goes through all steps
including removal of all old files, then throws the indicated error when it
tries to begin copying new files. When the error dialog is dispatched, Install
rolls back all changes, and RC1 works fine.

END RESULT: I am unable to install either RC2 or RC3.

Configuration:
WinXP Pro SP2 installed on local drive D:

Install files located in default folder on Desktop, user with admin privileges.

Double clicked on setup.exe, which worked okay up through the process of
deleting the previous version (2.0.2RC1), then threw an error.

I will attach a screen print of the error, which shows that install is trying to
find a file in the wrong place.

First noticed by working on a brochure with several inserted photos, anchored
to page. I deleted one photo so I could insert another in its place, and
clicked the from File icon on the Drawing toolbar. This brought up the Picture
dialog. I pressed escape (to dismiss the dialog), then tried again, with the
same result. I tried it with the same icon on the Insert toolbar, with same
results, then from the Insert menu, with the same results. This was puzzling,
since nothing seemed to be selected. I clicked the Picture tab on the Picture
dialog, and saw that another photo was supposedly selected, so I dismissed the
dialog and pressed Esc(ape) to deselect everything, then clicked the from File
button again, getting the Insert Picture dialog, as expected.

This is, at least for me, not the desired behavior for this button/menu item. It
is supposed to give the Insert Picture dialog, whether any graphic is selected
or not. I could not see anything in the online Help to support the observed
behavior. If I wanted the Picture dialog, I'd just double click the photo. I
really want the Insert Picture from File function to do what its title says it
should.

Will attach the offending document, which is a Word RTF document with graphics
embedded, and crashes OOo repeatedly. When this document is opened in Word XP,
it is automatically converted to the current version's format, which, when saved
again, can be opened by OOo with no problems. The RTF version of the document
is what crashes OOo, and it seems to have something to do with the size of the
document or the embedded images. The document briefly appears in OOo, without
the images, then crashes.

Sounds just like my install of OOo builds from OpenOffice.org mirrors, not the
Fedora rebuilds. In my case, the only difference is that the fonts are all TTF,
not Type 1. Same result, though.

I did this with several of the snapshot builds. When the Fedora rebuilds came
out, and I installed them, the installed fonts showed up, but the rendering was
totally incorrect. They looked like monospaced fonts, very ugly.

So, I confirm this report.2

Scenario:

Using Windows XP, address database created using embedded HSQLDB, query created
selecting certain records. Created an Envelope mail-merge document and inserted
some conditional data and hidden paragraph data. Saved these on removable media
so could access with Fedora Core 4. Then I rebooted to FC4, registered the
database created with Windows into FC4 version of OOo (680m143) and opened the
mailmerge document.

Problem: The data from the last record merged in Windows was still visible when
opened in Linux, no apparent errors. However, when I changed to a different
record and clicked Data to Fields, the fields did not update properly,
specifically, the first conditional field.

Testing done: I checked several modifications to the condition to see what might
work, but nothing helped. (IS NOT NULL, IS NOT EMPTY, ' ')

The original mail merge document as created in Windows will be attached, and
three screen prints showing the incorrect field updating.

I definitely saw this, but cannot reproduce it now.

Opened a new writer document,
Pasted in some text from the clipboard (text from a form in Firefox 1.0.7),
Saved and closed the document with Ctrl-W.

Result: blank frame with OpenOffice.org in titlebar, but the corresponding
button on the taskbar still has the name of the document I just closed. It
changes when opening another new document to Untitled...

I caught a screen image of this, to show it really happened. Could not find it
in IZ.

Well, I have used these shortcuts a LOT; they are very useful. Firefox, for
example, is an app that allows multiple tabs in a window, and multiple windows
open at the same time. Ctrl-W will close a tab or a window that has only no
tabs, but File-Quit or Alt-F4 will close the entire app, all windows and tabs at
once. Granted, Firefox is not an editor, so no files are modified, but the
effect is the same. What I like about FF is that it will warn you if you try to
close all the tabs on a window at once. OOo doesn't do that, and maybe it
should.

The big thing to remember is that OOo is ONE application, not 3, 4, or 5, no
matter how many different kinds of documents it can open at once. Think about
GIMP (opens many kinds of graphic files) or MS-Works (better example). MSW can
open any of at least 4 types of files at once and, though I don't remember
'cause I would not use it even if paid to do so, I think it recognizes the same
command structure.

I repeat, it's a matter of learning the CUA keys and remembering that OOo is one
application, not 6 (writer/calc/impress/draw/base/math). The MS Office suite is
NOT one application, so you would be right if you were using it and got this
kind of behavior.

I must admit that I'm not the typical user; I use keyboard shortcuts heavily,
because I hate having to move my hands from the keyboard back and forth to my
trackball/mouse. When I teach others to use programs on their computers, I teach
them about these shortcuts. My experience is that most users watching me use my
computer are amazed at how efficient I am. They WANT to know these shortcuts,
too. Most have never bothered to learn them.

Tell some unfortunate Windows user who has a rogue website opening up popup
windows in Internet Explorer that they don't have to chase the red X on them
with the mouse, they can just Ctrl-W repeatedly, and they'll thank you
profusely!

Anyway, if you want to continue the discussion, let's do it elsewhere.

I, for one, disagree. This menu command and the keyboard shortcuts to it,
Ctrl-Q and Alt-F4, is a common one in multi-doc interface applications to close
the entire application. A little less common is Alt-X. The common way to close
one window or document is with Ctrl-W or Ctrl-F4. This is true in Windows as
well as in Linux. It's really a case of re-training the user to use the correct
command to close a window.

Confirm, but in reverse, on Fedora Core 4, OOo 2.0 m125.

Steps:
1 Open blank Writer document, set Drawing toolbar visible. The default
configuration has the vertical text and vertical callout icons visible.

2. Attempt to disable (uncheck) the mentioned icons.

Results: They flash, but remain visible. The checkmark for Vertical Text does
not go away, but the Vertical Callout checkmark goes away. The vertical Callout
icon cannot be reenabled from the Visible Icons menu, but it can from the
Configure... dialog.

Hope this helps.

[framework-issues] [Issue 47215] WITH statement does not w ork correctly

My example does not work at all under m125 with the code as given. If I prepend
the dot to the structure elements, it works partly.

Try the following modified code, which demonstrates the failures in Len and
With, as well as some other inconsistencies. For example, the Print statements
require me to use the complete structured element name instead of the short form
with just the dot, or I get a runtime error.

REM * BASIC *

REM option explicit ' try it either way :)

Type tUserStruct
   sString1 as String * 10
   nNumber1 as Single
   iNumber2 as Integer
   cNumber3 as Currency
   bTV1 as Boolean
end type

Sub TestWith
Dim myStruct as tUserStruct, iLen1 as Integer, iLen2 as Integer

iLen1 = Len(myStruct) ' Fails with runtime error, so comment it out to let
the rest run
Print Structured variable length is ; iLen1
   With myStruct
.sString1 = This is a test ' this string is too long for the field
and
should truncate
Print .sString1, len(myStruct.sString1)' BUT... it does not, Len
returns 14
  .nNumber1 = sqr(3.0)
  iLen2 = Len(myStruct.nNumber1)
  print .nNumber1, iLen2 'Prints 1.732051 8 but the length should be 4
bytes for a Single
  .cNumber3 = 2.23606999 * 2.23606999
  Print .cNumber3, len(myStruct.cNumber3) ' prints 5. 6, where the
length should be 8 bytes
  .bTV1 = (1  1)  ' FALSE
  print .bTV1, len(myStruct.bTV1) ' Prints False 5 but length should be 2
or 4 (not sure which)
   End With
End Sub

I tried to reproduce this error on Fedora Core 4, m122; and on WinXP SP2, m122,
both with and without OOo dialogs. Could not get it to fail. Fedora's open
dialog does not allow you to type in a filename. WinXP's open dialog gives a
dropdown list of matching filenames as you type in the name, so I get two of
them, name1.doc and name1.odt. The first one is automatically selected if I
press enter. If I trim off the extension, I get an error, File does not exist:
name1 or similar. This behavior is similar on OOo's dialog in both operating
systems.

This discovered by:

1) create a frame
2) using the Frame (formating) toolbar, Frame Border Style icon, set border to
single, 4pt.

The resulting border is not 4.0 pts, but looks more like about 2.0 pts.

3) Right-click on frame and select Frame... dialog, click the Borders tab
4) In the Style dropdown, note that 2.0 pts does not appear, but 2.5pts does.
This is not the same as on the Frame-Border-Style dropdown of the toolbar.
5) Set to 4.0 pts, and close dialog.

Border thickness is now 4.0 pts.

I know I'm describing two issues in one, but they are related, and could both be
fixed at the same time.

What do you mean as advertised? Where is it advertised? The online help
says nothing to indicate this. I have used Visual Basic (not VBA), and many
other flavors of Basic, and none of them use the advertised behavior.

If this is the desired way for Star Basic to work, it should be documented in
the online help, and illustrated with an example.

Document (will be attached): (sxw format) Letter size, landscape orientation,
centerfold brochure, consisting of two pages, each page has two text frames
anchored to page, graphics anchored as paragraph within the frames.

When the document is exported (Save As...) to Word 97/2000/XP and the result is
reopened in OOo, the frames from page 2 are stacked on top of those from page 1,
and there is only one page in the document.

Also, tested the exported document with Word XP SP2, and confirmed that the
exported document is flawed.

To be noted: I tried to re-create the document in Word by copying and pasting
from OOo to Word. The default paste format is HTML when pasting from OOo to
MSWord. I attempted to edit one of the pasted graphics (inside a frame), and
got an error message from Word saying that graphic objects cannot be inserted
into a TextBox, among other places. OOo DOES allow this, which is superior, but
not compatible.

[framework-issues] [Issue 48790] alignment buttons in toolbar appears to be inactive when differntly aligned items are selected

I think this is the expected behaviour when the selection has multiple possible
attributes for the controls on the toolbar. If the controls were to show one of
the attributes selected, which one should it be? For this reason, the font
name, size, style (B/I/U), and alignment attributes are left blank or greyed-out
(not inactive) when multiple, differing attributes are encountered in the
selection. Leaving the buttons non pushed would be deceiving if there were
portions of the selection that contained that attribute. Thus, this third
state clearly shows that part of the selection has that attribute. It's a very
good way to show that.

I think this issue should be closed as invalid.

Opening a database file (odb) puts a file lock on it that is not released by

If choosing the font size of 10.5 from anywhere (font size selector on toolbar
or the Size menu of context menu), the selector will display 10 instead.

Steps:

1 select any text
2 set the font size to 10.5 from the size list on the toolbar

The selector will display 10, although the actual text size is at 10.5

3 click the 10 in the selector and press Enter

The selected text will change to 10pt size.

Okay, Aparan, I tried some things to try to reproduce your problem, and for
quite a while, could not do it. I was about to write you a solution, when I had
the same thing happen to me! So, I see the problem, now.

When the crash recovery dialog came up, I hit cancel, and got a Runtime Error:
Pure virtual function call.

I'll list what I did to get the error next.
Be back shortly. I just had another error: I tried to redock the Stylist on the
right, and it disappeared, too! Didn't crash, however. I'm gonna reinstall to
see if I can figure out what's happening.

Matias,

I just tried your first spreadsheet (the .ods one), with 1.9.93, and it opened
and was navigable and editable with no hint of trouble.

However, the .xls sheet crashed the app right away, about halfway along the load
progress bargraph, which said calculating

It is noteworthy that the Len() function in OOo Basic does not mirror the
functionality in any dialect of MS Basic. In VisualBasic, for example, the Len
function returns the number of bytes of storage occupied by a variable of any
type. Therefore, Len(lLong#) would return 4, Len(dDouble) would return 8 or 10,
depending on the actual datatype used internally. OOo Basic returns always the
length of the string representation of the given variable. This leads to a
runtime error when using Len on a user-defined variable, for example, a
structure created with the Type/End Type structure.

I request that Len be made to work like Len does in VB. This would make it much
easier for people to port macros from MSOffice, and for programmers used to
using VB.

Test this:

Type tUserStruct
   sString1 as String
   nNumber1 as Single
   iNumber2 as Integer
   cNumber3 as Currency
   bTV1 as Boolean
End Type

Sub TestWith
   Dim myStruct as tUserStruct

   With myStruct
  nNumber1 = sqr(3.0)
  print nNumber1
  cNumber3 = 2.23606999 * 2.23606999
  bTV1 = (1 = 1)  ' TRUE
  print bTV1
  print Tax on cNumber3 is cNumber3 * 0.065
   End With
End Sub

and you'll get a whole bunch of runtime errors (Variable not defined) in the
With block.

The With Object statement should (a la VisualBasic and other variants of
Basic), treat the variables referenced inside its block as elements of the
referenced Object.

In all flavors of MS Basic, especially VisualBasic, one declares a fixed-length
string variable by the syntax
Dim sVar as String * bytecount

This does not work in OOo, and makes it difficult (impossible?) to define a
fixed-length composite variable, for example, with Type/End Type. This is
useful in creating scripts to work with random-access datafiles with
fixed-length records.

Example declaration:

Type tDBFRecord
   sDeleted as string * 1 ' * or
   iRecId as Integer
   sFullName as String * 35 ' Name
   sAddr1 as String * 35
   sAddr2 as String * 35
   sCity as String * 25
   sState as String * 5
   sPostal as String * 10
   sCtryCode as Byte
   sPhone1 as String * 15
   sPhone2 as String * 15
   sEmail as String * 64
   sNotes as String * 60
End Type

REM the above record would have a Len() of 303

Its length is indeterminate as OOo Basic currently stands. Len does not work on
it, and I know of no other method to determine how much space it occupies in
memory. I have conversed on the users list with Andrew Pitonyak about this and
the Len() function issue.

Your second reported bug was same as my 44413, already resolved.
Your first reported bug was same as my 44416, filed 7 Mar 05, two days before
yours. Please vote for 44413, as yours will probably be marked as a duplicate.

Thank you for the report. Confirmation is good, gets things happening with the
developers.

Your comments do not reflect the issue I filed. I saw what you did, but that
was not my concern. The problem is that after adding records to the table, the
report did not show the data from the table, rather, it used the latin and
random numbers to fill the fields, as it might in showing a sample layout in the
wizard. There were no database fields in the report to be filled in with data.
_This_ is the problem, not that the empty table produces an empty report. Can
you please change the title of the issue back to reflect what I reported?

Thanks,
Matt

Returning to this issue, I see it works this time. However, only because I now
have data in the table. I will try again later to reproduce same problem.

Works (partially) for me, G. (WinXP Pro SP2) 1.9.79 (2.0BC)

You access the wizard from a Database document.

I found issues with the wizard, though. I'll file a separate bug report.
