My opinion is that Discard have to be translated in Abbandona. If we use
Esci we reproduce the reason this issue has been started. Esci is ambiguous
and is not clear that the file will be not saved.
But the question is Do you want to save the changes? so the answer should
really be Yes No and Cancel, translated in Sì, No, Annulla.
So I suggest to change the English answers as first sanity goal (this way user
have to thing twice... reading the question and trying to map the given
answers into a yes/no/go back actions). If not possible, I suggest Abbandona

I've tested today 3.2 m45 Win Ita (by Pavel) and it has the same defect.
I've then tested with 3.1 m1 Win Ita (by Pavel) and it has the same defect.
So has not been fixed in 3.2, and showed up already with the first build (m1) of
3.1.
Just in case this can help...

Create a new document with some paragraphs with more than a line and format them
as bullets list (Format - Bullets and numbering) and then use the toolbutton
Increase indent.
You will have the first line of each paragraph that no longer is aligned with
the following one of the same paragraph (the below one) since the tabulator that
separates bullet from text expands a lot (shout stay the same).
i.e.
* sdfsdfsfsdfs
  dfsdfdfefere
* sdfsdfsfsdfs
  dfsdfdfefere

press Increase indent and you will have:
  *sdfsdfsfsdfs
dfsdfdfefere
  *sdfsdfsfsdfs
dfsdfdfefere

Instead of:
  * sdfsdfsfsdfs
dfsdfdfefere
  * sdfsdfsfsdfs
dfsdfdfefere

3.01 or previous versions don't have this defect, nor seems 310m8 under debian
GNU/Linux 64, Paverl's builds, KDE 4.2

Don't understand suggestion of trying a more recent build like m9, since
DEVm31 should be more recent, and I've tried also m32 and m33, just were not
available in bug tracker combo box list.
Stable 3.0 does not have this problem. I've removed Dev_ now because I need OOo
to do some work, will try in the future with more recent versions.
In any case, the problem seems that:
a) if there is NOT already a soffice and soffice.bin process running, the above
behaviour is also with 3.0 stable
b) dev_m31-32 seems not to automatically start soffice and soffice.bin

So is a) normal? Should be not. Can be b) confirmed?

After logging (KDE4, debian sid 64, pavel's OOo builds), if I run Writer, Calc,
or whatever, I see the splash screen, the program icon on the taskbar, then
cursor shape stays in busy mode for a while and at the end it returns normal,
the program disappears from taskbar and nothing is run.
If I check with:
ps -A | grep office
I see that process soffice and soffice.bin are running.
If I try again, with those 2 process running, I succeed.
If I kill those two processes, then I have the same problem described (OOo don't
start).

That's new behaviour is really bad. A) I find it not intuitive B) you like or
not, people are used to M$toys behaviour, and Word behaves with click to
select
The only effect you will have with this behaviour is people upset and frustrated
because Writer is broken and does not let you select objects.
There are few experiences more frustrating for a person than a object you can
see on the screen and you can't select clicking/double clicking on it.

I want to print with double sided printing, so (Writer, or Calc, or whatever) I
go to File - Print then I press the Properties button on the right of the
printer name, but the property dialog does NOT show up.
I've debian sid 64 bit, Pavel Janik's builds m6, cups 1.3.7-1, one printer with
two instances defined (normal and a BW setup).

I'v removed m3 packages (dpkg -r), and installed m6 in debian sid 32 bit.
The error is in:
dpkg: error processing ./openoffice.org-ooolinguistic_3.0.0-6_i386.deb
(--install):
 trying to overwrite `/opt/openoffice.org/basis3.0/program/libhunspell.so',
which is also in package openoffice.org-core05

In any case, all the dpkg -iR . messages are here if needed to be
investigated.
Instaling m6 x86_64 version did not produced that error, as far as I remember.

Ehm, I've a bad memory :) Also in 64bit I had troubles, in fact dpkg -l | grep
openoffice shows that openoffice.org-ooolinguistic 3.0.0-6 has not been
complitely installed, and I've still 3.0.0-5 (there was upgrading from m5 and
not removing previous packages).

Just tested with Dev300_m4, Debian GNU/Linux 64, and the problem is still
present. Inserting a paragraph at the top as almost imediate, in that position
takes 5.
There should be something bad or in the imported document, or in Writer
behaviour

hi, I've unpacked and installed, as usual, Pavel's builds of OOo for x86_64
debian.
This time I got the following errors, and as you can see from the bottom of the
report the openoffice.org-core08 is missing.
Asking in IRC I got this suggestion:
I'm pretty sure it is just a wrong dependency information, ignoring the core08
dependency should be OK (since the files now should be in the
openoffice.org-en-something packages). Please file an issue against the
installation project, and assign the issue to obr or cc him.

here the installation output and ls -l:

subsequent dpkg -l | grep openoffice shows that BOTH version are (partially and
in a broken way) installed.
The output is in italian, this is a short dictionary ;)

to mba and all the other developers:
Premise: developers are doing a great work! Thanks!
COmplain: what I see as a big problem in OOo is the fact that important avoids
consider daily annoiances and problems users can face. I.e. developers consider
much more important a crash that occurs 1 time over 1.000.000 instead of an
annoiance that a user faces every day many times a day.
There are too much exaples of this, unfortunatly. Just I can remember / report
the first ones comes to my mind:
1) this issue ;)
2) the decimal separator of the numeric keyboards in Calc (fixed after too much
time)
3) calc that as default prints ALL the sheets and not the current one (solved
just recentrly, but with problems in the preview page number)
4) writer that did not had (or still has?) the create single print jobs,a real
night mare if you have double side printer and have to print multiple copies
5) Deleting newline deletes formatting on subsequent line (when in empty
paragraph) #50135, was targeted for 2.3 then moved to 2.x
6) etc. ;)
In short, watching OOo fix around 1.200 bugs / improvements, and have vary
annoying (belive me, I use OOo in my office) that seems (of course, for someone
that is familiar with the huge codebase) easy to fix be there since 1.1
version is something that makes you scream unbelivable.
Also being one that tries to move people from M$crap to OOo, and be ashamed for
some of these bugs is really a bad experience. Remember that people that try
to move from M$ don't give OOo many chances, once Calc prints 50 sheets instead
of 1 Excel would have printed, they simply remove OOo. And having me forced to
set tabs and margins in numeric way with a dialog instead of simply drag with
the mouse is something that I fight daily and depresses mee too.
So please, for OOo sake, put users priorities on top of developers one. Btw,
also the format paintbrush does not work as expected, developers defending the
behaviour for tecnical reasons, while users are upset because works not as
expected. Users don't mind about internal rapresentation or the way the code is
build, they follow their mental model, and that's what developers should care
most (see Alan Cooper's books about it, for instance).
Again, the above complain does not mean that I (we) don't apreciate your work,
just I (we) think that priorities should be fixed with another, more productive
/ user friendly criteria.

I've been facing this need also today with Writer m225, just wanted to produce a
poster with A1 size, and was unable to find in the size list. Even if I can set
the custom dimension, I think that having A0-A5 range (or beyond) is very
useful. For instance, KWord does support the entire Ax range, just putting the
most common formats (A3-A5) on top of the pickup list. Also looks trivial to
fix.

I've downloaded Pavel's m220 build for Linux86, US_en with language packs for
Italian.
I've unpacked and moved all the .debs under a single dir, and issued the:
dpkg -i *.deb (as I've always done, I've installed many mXXX so far).
With m220 I get an error, see below. Asking in the dev IRC channel, I've got
this tip by Rene:
sounds like files moved between packages without appropriate Replaces:

I've copy-pasted the content from web:
http://www.howtoforge.com/lintrack_lan_gateway_openvpn_bridge
into the .odt doc attached.
If you go with the cursor to the AAA on the right of the object (that seems to
be a web frame... how can I tell what the object is? Right clicking and
selecting Properties has no effect), and start delete with backspace, once you
delete the object Writer crashes.
It happens under m210 GNU/Linux debian sid and m211 Win2K.
Don't know if relevant, but I'm using Italian dictionary, so almost all words
are red-underlined by the spell checker. Also, as soon as you open the document,
if you select some text the text is not visually marked as selected (no white on
black background)

Any news? Having that Toolbars translated in something that could sound like
symbolbars is really a pain. The longer a bad translation is keept, the worse
the situation becomes. We missed 2.2, please include in 2.3 at least. New users
are really confused, and me also since my brain never looks about symbols when
looking for toolbar related menu item.

I've tried with
GNU/Linux, Kde 3.5.5 (btw, local lan connection through FreeNX X Server) Pavel's
build m198
and
Windows2K, SP4, Pavel's build m199
and the bug is STILL there (if does not appear immediately under GNU, try 2-3
times, and/or with bbb cell).

Hi, don't know if is debian dpkg that has changed (I have debain sid, and I
update it frequently), but having m198 installed and then installing m199 .debs

seems installed correctly, in any case, but their status is iU instead of

In a Writer document if I write:
2.1RC1
This is some text
1) first line
2) second line
after pressing Enter at the end of second line, Writer thinks that this is a
numbered list and transforms these 2 paragraphs in a numbered list indenting
them like (dots = spaces, I use dots to prevent wrong display in this bug
tracker):
This is some text
..1) first line
..2) second line
..3)
And this is fine.
(btw, instead, m194 applies numbers and bullets style after you complete 1)
line only, that seems to early to me. If considered an issue, let me know that I
will open a different one on it's own).
Anyway, if I do the same with letters, I've a strange behavior:
This is some text
a) first line
b) second line
c) third line
after pressing Enter at the end of third line:
This is some text
a) first line
b) second line
..c) third line
..ci)
That is really bad.
Should be:
This is some text
..a) first line
..b) second line
..c) third line
..d)

I've seen how the most widely used proprietary program works, and seems fine to
me:
the ruler snap is set to the same visual guidelines of the ruler, that are every
2.5mm (you have 4 in every cm).
In the ruler you have the number, i.e. 3, then a small vertical line (at 3.25
position), a bigger vertical line (at 3.5 position), then a small one again (at
3.75 pos.) and the next number (i.e. 4)
Like:
...3--'--I--'--4--'--I--'--5...
This setup seems very reasonable to me, and needs not custom configurability.
In Draw is configurable but that is a drawing program, so you can have different
and special needs, while for writing letters the above visual snap is all what
you need. So better not bloat the config interface with another parameter to set
(and consider the support issues to those that have accidentally set it
wrong...).

I'm using Pavel's m193 build on Debian GNU/Linux unstable, KDE 3.5.5.
Run Writer, Insert - Object - Ole Object: OOo 2.1 Spreadsheet
Enter some text in A1 to A3 (i.e. aaa, bbb, ccc), then exit the embedded sheet
clicking outside.
Double click the sheet to re-edit, and click A1
On the top of the program window you have the edit field (with buttons for
formula, sigma, etc.). Click on the edit field where you have A1 content
displayed.
It shows briefly the X and V icon, then those icons become grayed and the
content disappears. If not, just click outside the sheet and repeat those steps,
this time clicking in A2.
I include a document where I was trying to change the TOTALE cell (C1)

Load the document, when you are prompted, select enable macros, you are in the
first tab (numero) and enter a number in the cell that has 42 (i.e. 43... is
not important). Then close calc letting it save the document. You will see the
progress bar running while saving, then calc crashes.
I've found the same problem with RC1 and RC2, both under GNU/Linux and
Windows2000, using the Pavel's builds.
The m165 build1 does not suffer for it (nor previous versions, as far as I can
tell).

This file was converted from Excel 2000 (and the macro re-wrote in starbasic).
Wondering if the dead name is something you can easely produce with Excel and
so can hurt OOo when dealing with Excel files as well (and this would be more
harming than a strange name produced by API, of course). In any case, previous
version did not crashed, and having Calc be more error proof again would be a
good thing. Home mine is a rare case, otherwise a lot of people could complain
about Calc 2.0.3 being broken...

I have, but can't upload because I no longer have Excel and so I can't remove
private data with the native application (Excel).
Anywhay, I've checked, and the original .xls file has that name with this
reference:
$#RIF!.$A$1
But this has been preserved during conversion (.ods produced with OOo 2.0.3 has
also), so I've no idea how it can have been removed. It could be that previous
OOo had problems with that, so I'm facing an old OOo issue (already happend to
me, see issue 63735).

I agree with the issue as originally reported, I don't with the bulk string
substitution has been done.
Probably because in italian we have different words for caption depending of
the object we are referring to.
So if is really correct to change dicitura with didascalia when referring to
pictures, it's not call didascalia when referring to table rows/columns, but
intestazione is better. For fields, we should find amore apropriate term as
well (usually we have nome (name) for database fields, like il nome del campo
è...).
So sounds not very apropriate having these strings, for example:
source\formwizard\dbwizres.src Volete indicare una didascalia per i campi?
source\text\scalc\guide\consolidate.xhp Per consolidare le celle in
base alle
didascalie delle righe o delle colonne, la didascalia desiderata deve essere
contenuta nell'area di origine selezionata.

So please re-do changes limiting the scope of the substitution to the
pictures/tables/objects inserted in a document, or situations where didascalia
is apropriate (iano, are you Italian/speak italian? I mean, can you do and judge
by yourself or do you need some help?)

I've tried m162 for Windows, the Pavel's build and also the Sun official one. In
both builds the problem is there: no hyphenation until I, at least, open the
language settings - writing aids dialog and confirm it with OK.
Is like that while spellcheck starts as soon as the document is loaded, the
hyphenation does not...

File - print does not produce nothing on paper, in Writer or Calc, m161 or
m162, Windows 2000 (m162 for GNU/Linux works fine instead).
I've tested Pavel's m162 and also Sun's official one.
If you want to print, after the printer choice dialog, the print small dialog
appears with the Cancel button. But it happens that:
a) the spooler seems to start receive the document, but seems also to wait for
the end of the document in vain
b) the Printing dialog stays open forever
c) pressing the Cancel button seems to have no effect.. you have to terminate
the soffice.bon process by hand (after that, the printer spoool becomes empty)

I've been asked to specify that I'm talking about the AUTOMATIC hyphenation, not
the manual one. Seems that there is something preventing the automatic
hyphenation of the document to start at startup. Once started (with the dialog
trick), it keeps going (until you also kill QuickStarted).
Pavel was able to reproduce with cs_CZ, while I'm using it_IT.

I've a document that was created with OOo 1.x, then converted to .odt and that
I've used with 2.0.x with no problems.
Some days ago I've installed m161 (Windows and GNU/Linux, Pavel's builds) and
updating or trying to create the index produces an empty index.
To reproduce: right click on the index (table of context) part at the first page
of the document, and select Update index/table and you will have just a
single, index related, background grayed paragraph!
(btw, I've reduced the dimension of the document just to bring to your attention
a small set case, but it should produce an index with many rows neverless).
Even if you remove the index and create a brand-new it does not work.
If I create a brand new document with m161, then it works fine instead. So there
must be something strange in this document that worked just fine until m161 (or
also m160?).

Hi, I'm using m161 under GNU/Linux and Windows, the builds from Pavel Janik,
Italian version.
If I load a Write document, or a Calc one with cell with hyphenator active, it
does not hyphenate.
I've some text, set as Italian regarding language (I've Italian also as default
document language)
To make it work as it should, I just have to:
Tools - Options - Language settings - Writing aids
then do NOT touch anything, just press OK button, then Writer (or Calc)
re-parses the text and hyphenates as expected.
In the Windows version, since there is the QuickStart, if you run Writer or Calc
again, then hyphenation works, but if you close QuickStart it does no.
For the GNU/Linux version (I've debian sid), in my second PC I've completely
removed the previous version, hunted for config files and deleted, then
reinstalled, but the bug persists.
Previous versions (2.0.2, 2.0.1 for sure) did not had this defect.

If I double click in the explorer to a document of Microsoft Office, or of OOo
1.x, or a .rtf, etc. the file is loaded but uses the short filename in the 8.3
format. It's displayed in the title of the window and I have it in File -
Save as
Instead, if I open the same file from OOo (File - Open), the correct long name
is used. I've the correct (long) name also opening from Explorer native formats
(like .odt).

Hi, the menu File and Format have, respectly, F and O as accelerator keys (can
be activated by alt+f and alt+o). Unfortunatly, in the italian translation, that
is File and Formato, even if keeping the F and O accelerator keys would have
been more than apropriate (and is the usual choice for Windows italian
programs), they have been changed in F for both, so you can't directly open
Formato meny with the keyboard because, if you press Alt F, File menu is opened
(and you have to scroll orizontally until the Formato menu).
This affects ALL the OOo applications with those menu (i.e. Writer, Calc,
Impress...).
Please fix ASAP, since is trivial but very annoying.

Please, don't consider everything only from a developer point of view, but also
from a user's one, or this issue will be doomed to the same destiny as the
decimal separation and numeric keypad.
Issue type: ENHANCEMENT and Target milestone: OOo Later plus priority P4 means
that is something not important to fix, and won't be fixed in a rasonable
timeframe. For a user, this is a high priority instead. Having Calc behave in a
so confusing way (against WYSIWYG), and also different from what is expected
based on another program very used is a real problem.
Please assign a higher priority and a Target milestone not far from now. From
the description seems easy to fix, and hurts a lot the user. OOo has to become a
viable alternative to other office suites, so we are also switching from users
with strong motivation on Free Software to users that just want to try something
that works good and is cheaper. For them these faults put discredit upon the
entire OOo program.

And the step 6 of the wizard is called Nome e luogo (left part of the dialog),
while should be Nome e percorso, since means the path of the file for the
agenda, and percorso is a widely used translation for path. If percorso is
accepted, also Posizione e nome del file should be changed in Percorso e nome
del file (right part of the dialog, the grey one).

You can do this with an empty sheet:
Take A1, enter a big value (i.e. 12345678), then format taht cell as currency
then move to A2 put there the formula =A1.
Bizarre behaviour, A2 not only will have A1 value, as expected, but also it's
FORMAT (will be displayed as currency value)!
Then another anomaly:
Go to A3 and enter another number (i.e. 456789), then select A2, click the
format pailnbrush, and then click on A3 with the intention of copy the currency
format A2 has... surprise, A3 will keep it's no format format.
Developers in IRC channel has gave me the implementation reason for this, but
since it's behaviour must conform to user expectation, I consider it a defect
(and one developer agreed with me).
The implementation reason was like that's the formula that displays the result
according to the input cells. The result cell has no number format attribute,
that's why. but every user will be very unhappy about it, so please fix this
usability/productivity/faith in predicable behaviouir issue.

Ok, for the first problem, the one that if you reference a cell, it's format is
used also, I've seen that M$ Excell does the same, so we can consider it a
standard behaviour.
Remains the problem that it does not really copy the format flag, so a
subsequent FormatBrush copy from it fails, and the user sees a cell with a
certain format that can't be copied (the format) to another with the brush.
Strange, if you then reference that cell, the format IS copied.
so you have
A1 (shows as currency)
A2=A1 (shows as currency)
A3=A2 (shows as currency as well)
But if you try to act in A2 or A3 copying format from other cells with the
brush, you fail (i.e. copy the number standard format from another cell to try
to remove the currency format). This way seems that the format brush is broken

[sw-issues] [Issue 26135] make ruler-items snap to configurable grid

Please, don't forgive about this issue! Is really annoying not having a snap. On
my opinion it has not the need to be configurable, a reasonable snap value would
be enough (I guess 1mm). Now you can visually move ruler elements with a
precision of a 1/100 of millimeter! Something absurd. Having a millimiter snap
or just the snap used by M$ Word would be good. If someone wants more precision,
the visual way is not the right one, he has to set numerically, of course. If
you want a 5mm precision, just drag until you reach the half centimeter
indicator, that is not hard to find with a 1 millimeter snap.
I don't know the insides of OOo, but this is the basic of visual interaction
design, regarding a tool very used, and one of the first problems that a
reluctant converter from M$Office will protest against. It seems something
that does not requires too much programming efforts but has huge benefits in OOo
acceptance.

Frank, you are telling me what the code does. I'm telling you what should do,
what the user expects to do. If you change the filename in the formula, it
should tell you that the filename is invalid. Implement it however you like, but
don't let the sheet have a value that seems ok (0) while is not (the link is not
working). As I tell you, you can rename the file, and if you can, someone sooner
or later will do. Not having Calc report the issue is a problem. In addition, if
BIG.ods is different file thatn big.ods, and the shadow sheet has been
automatically created when I entered BIG.ods, it should do again when I enter
big.ods, this is a consistent behaviour. At least some explicative error message
should be issued. If you don't want to consider it a bug, classify it as
improvement, don't simpli close it please :)
In any case, the implementatino of the shadow sheet is really bad to me, even
if (or expecially because) is as Excell works.

You have File - Templates - Organize and the button Address Book
must be translated with
Rubrica (as is in the related help file, or in other UI places)
instead it seems that has the string taken from another language, since that
button has the caption Libr. direcciones (sounds Spanish to my Italian ears,
but I could be wrong, but sure is not italian ;)

Hi, I had a.ods with a cell what referrd to BIG.ods.
Then, swithching from Windows clients and samba to a native OOo under linux, I
changed BIG.ods to big.ods, leaving the sheet name uppercase.
So in a.ods cell A1 I substitute:
='file:///z/zzz_calc_test/BIG.ods'#$BIG.F8
with
='file:///z/zzz_calc_test/big.ods'#$BIG.F8
but the value was 0 (instead of the correct value of that cell, 22)
I noticed that as soon as I entered the corrected filename, Calc uppercased it
(from big.ods to BIG.ods).
Then I noticed that in Edit - Links there was:
=file:///z/zzz_calc_test/BIG.ods
Using Modify and picking up the lowercase file solved the problem.
So there are 2 issues, OMHO:
a) with case sensitive filesystem, if I have BIG.ods and big.ods, they should be
managed as 2 different files, so a new linkg to big.ods should be created in
the Edit - Links list and the filename in the formula should be preserved
b) since BIG.ods does not exist anymore, Calc should complain and not return 0

In the attached files, you have aurora.ods that is the a.ods in the above
example, and pieni.ods that was PIENI.ods and is the BIG.ods of the above
example.
If in B11 you try to convert:
='file:///z/zzz_calc_test/zip/PIENI.ods'#$PIENI.F8
to
='file:///z/zzz_calc_test/zip/pieni.ods'#$PIENI.F8
you will fail as described

I would put it in a higher priority. This defect is much worse now that a lot of
people (hopefully) will migrate from Excel to OpenOffice.
I've migratd all my files, and in Calc files that were Excel files with external
links, after manually changing them to the .ods files (see my issue #55655),
I've found that I still have the links to the old .XLS files, and also the
hidden sheets to them!
In any case
a) this mechanism that is automatic only in one direction (creation) is very
confusing (=bad) for the user. I did never thought about such external links
list and hidden sheets until some expert pointed me to them in IRC channel.
b) I think that the hidden sheet is a bad desigh choice. I've 40 calc files that
take a single value from a big calc file, and I've that big file duplicated
(copied as hidden sheet) 40 times. I think that the referred sheet does not have
to be saved, and should be reloaded (and not saved in any case) when (if)
needed. In addition consider that you could give to someone else a file that,
and you as average user are not aware of, has a lot of hidden information
(i.e. you copy a file and modify it to point to other files... your previous
pointed data are still there, in hidden sheets...).
And the fact that Excel does it is one more reason to do it different ;)

There are additional problems:
if you rename the link by hand you still have:
a) the link with the .XLS file is still there (see: edit - link), it should be
automatically removed also by the wizard
b) the hidden sheet is there (the one formed with the .XLS file), so this also
has to be removed (Format - Sheet - Show, right click on the tab and delete)
c) if you change case of the file name you reference to, i.e. from uppercase to
lowercase, the link is not updated (I've to file a separate issue about that),
but the reference in the formula is automatically uppercase. The file is not
found, since lowercase, and the value is set to 0, instead of give an error
Frank states that IMHO the costs for this doesn't match the outcome. So this
should be a wontfix Issue.. This only means that he has no Excel files to
convert. If developers instead lissen to users, and really want OOo adoption,
should fix it ASAP.
An average office has thousand of files to convert before removing M$Office (I
had 6487), so OOo can't leave on the do it by hand of the user what can easely
be automated by the conversion wizard, is totally non-sense.

178 files, maybe. Try with 1780, or 6478 as I did, then let me know. The average
office has thousands of files to convert, in hundred of folders, you can't ask
them to convert them in bulks of 100 files. Do we want to ease their migration
as much as possible or not?
Thanks

I've build a python script that, at least, sets the filesystem date/time, I post
here for some other user's convenience, but should be done automatically by the
wizard, so please fix it:

#!/usr/bin/env python

walks through the directory tree specified and when it founds a file of
Microsoft
Office format or StarOffice format that has an equivalent in the
OpenDocument format,
set's the latter timestamp the same as the former.
This is useful after running the OpenOffice.org conversion wizard
that unfortunately sets the timestamp of the converted files to the current
date/time (loosing this useful information)

I've started converting all the documents of my office from MsOffice format to
OpenDocument, using the wizard.
I've started the conversion in a directory tree with about 3,500 files.
With the log enabled, the conversion is 10x slower than without the log, and,
even worse, becomes slower and slower. After 7 hours (sigh!) I was around 1,600
files converted, and I had to abort the process.
I restarted without log enabled, and I completed it, as I said, with a
document/minute ratio 10x faster, from start to end.
Even when converting 680 Excel files the log flag made it be a painful
experience (but did not re-tried without it, so don't know exactly what
improvements you could have in a pure Excel conversion).
I expect a lot of people use the wizard with their archives, so improvements in
this regards is much more important than before.
Please, improve the log option algorithm, or remove it.
I've realized a python script that I run after the wizard, that checks if each
M$ Office file has a converted one, and if not prints it's path. This works only
if you have the source files and the converted one in the same position, of
course. This is very beta software (I don't assume responsability for it), but
seems to work fine, so you could include it in the wizard to run it at the end
of the process, and it's probably more useful than the report (btw, it does not
yet consider the templates).

#!/usr/bin/env python

wizard

I've Excel files that I have converted with the conversion wizard. Some of the
sheets cells have refences to another file, i.e.:
='file:///smbshare/Documents/2005_06/pieni.XLS'#$PIENI.$F$9
Even if in principle there could be the chance that one uses the wizard to
convert the master file without converting also the related ones, I think
that this is VERY unlikely (and if not, it could convert the single master
file just saving it in OpenDoc format, without the wizard).
In addition, the wizard, and I like it, creates the converted file with a
lowercase extensions, even if the source file has it uppercase (and I've many
files like that). I'm not only abandoning M$ Office, but M$ Windows as well in
the client side (done years ago in the server one), so I will access files
inside windows and no more samba, so using a case-sensitive filesystem (oh, I do
hate case-sensitive filesystem!).
So I ask that the wizard take care of looking in the cells that have a reference
to an external file, and rename the reference with .ods instead of .xls or .XLS
(or whatever case it founds).
Having to do it by hand is very time consuming if you have many spreadsheets
with such references like I have (around 600).
As stated in previous issues I've raised, these are difficoults I'm facing now
that I'm converting all my files into OpenDocument format, and I really think
they should be take in high consideration to facilitate migration (i.e. for
Massachusetts ;))

2.0rc1 has the same problem (and m130), under windows or linux, the italian or
the english version.
It becomes dd/09/ (instead of what, in OOo, should be 31/12/1999)
Also, the time field, or at least what I used with M$ Office to have time, is
converted in date field, and with 31/12/1999 format.
So I've something like:
Today dd/09/ at: 30/09/2005
instead of
Today 30/09/2005 at: 21:40

I would insist for targheting for 2.0, not for 2.0.1.
a) preview is a function used by almost all users, and also often. We expect a
lot of OOo users be coming from M$ products and M$ Windows in general, so they
will feel lost/irritated by not finding Anteprima di stampa
b) a lot of people is waiting for 2.0, don't know long will it take for 2.0.1
and how many will upgrade as soon as available, so we will have substantially
the same program with a different menu caption in a basic and widely used menu
item... Not to mention 1.x that will be the same of 2.0.1 but differ from 2.0!
c) I think that documentation/books will be ready for 2.0, why condemn them to
quick obsolescence/imprecision?
d) I don't know the inner mechanism of OOo developement, but this is really a
trivial fix, and in addition is a revert to a previous behaviour. Also fixes
the inconsistency of the label of the menu item, and the caption of the button
in the preview
So, in conclusion, please fix it for 2.0

The italina translation of Page preview that in 1.x was Anteprima di stampa
now has been changed, in the file menu, to Vista pagina.
This is not a good choice, and all people in IRC channel #openoffice.org-it
agree.
The translation an italian user expects to see for that function, if he is used
to Windows or the italian localizations of KDE or Gnome, is Anteprima di
stampa, it's something that has become standard translation of preview.
Also, if you select Vista pagina, then in the preview you have the button
Chiudi anteprima, (chiudi=close) and not Chiudi vista, that would be
consistent with the (wrong) new translation.
Please use Anteprima di stampa as the translation of Page preview

Opening that document, selecting all the elements, then Modify - connect.
In Windows, Draw hangs (freezes). It has been confirmed by other people on IRC
using m128 (while I've m125)
In GNU/Linux (debian unofficial packages), crashes on my pc, while seems to work
fine to someone else (but with m128, no one in the channel tried with m125)
btw, I've no java runtime installed in GNU/Linux, while I have in Windows. In
any case, it should detect the missing java runtime without crashing, if this
could be the problem

Seems that is just very slow in preparing the preview of the image.
The m103 under GNU/Linux takes 9 seconds to show preview (Athlon 2400)
The m95 under Windows takes 3 seconds (Athlon 1700)
But, with m103 under Linux (not m95 under windows), if you keep click on the
tabs, also [macro] is slow, and sometimes crashes Writer (try clicking on all
tabls repetely, closing the dialog while in [Picture], reopening and re-cliking
until [mcro]). Crashing it again freezes the X-server also (xming)

I can confirm that with m95 it's fixed, but I think there still is something odd
with it.
The structure of the file is simple: a tite an a table and a page break (btw,
how can I see this break? M$ Word shows it).
(times are taken on my Athlon 1700 pc, 512MB ram, Win2k)
If I insert a paragraph (Enter) before the first table title (Villa Alcyone)
it takes 1-2 seconds. This sounds good since, from a user point of view, all the
sequent tables have to be moved down one line (but I don't know internal
structure).
But if I insert a paragraph before the Majon 29 title, it takes 9 seconds, but
that table is around the half file lenght position!
If you go to the very bottom table, that empty titled Condominio, and you
insert a paragraph, it's almost immediate.
If you then go torwards top of 3 tables, (Casa Verocai) it takes 3 seconds.
If you go up 3 more (Villa Sorapis) it's 5-6 seconds
And the Ca' Revis table is 9-10 seconds...
So my point is that in every position it should be as fast as when you enter the
paragraph at the top of the file (1-2 seconds), or much faster.
A slowlness of 9-10 seconds has no explainations, except some code problems,
OMHO.

3) Edit - Find and replace, search for ca' revis

I've tested with Windows m87 version, and the bug is still here. Maybe m87 is a
pre-fix build?
Windows 2000 sp2

In addition to what cloph said, I've done some tests again, with Win2K and
m71s1, and paolom, a friend of mine in #openoffice.org-it, with m69 under
Slackware 10.

Seems to be not a code-translation problem, but the ability of keeping and using
the set value:

load calc - disable same as locale setting - OK button - exit calc (not
saving the spreadsheet)
load calc - enable same as locale setting - OK button - it works - exit
calc (not saving the spreadsheet)
load calc - does NOT work, even if the flag is still checked (enabled)

I've NOT enabled the pre-loader OOo (sorry, I don't remember what is the name
of the icon on the system try that pre-loads some part of OOo).

So seems that the value is loaded by the Language dialog, but not by the program
itself, except when exiting from the Language dialog.

In addition, I would suggest to change the label of the option from same as
local setting to convert to local setting.
thanks

Any news about it? Doc import filter has greately improved since 1.0 (I'm
testing m71 now), but this issue should be fixed also. In addition, I consider
this as a useful feature by itself, it saves you from having to deal with tables
and annoying (and difficoult) formatting settins in many circumstances.
