The "Real academia española", the maximun authority on Spanish language, have a
service to ask linguistic questions here:
http://www.rae.es/RAE/Noticias.nsf/Home?ReadForm
(under "consultas lingüisticas"). I finally ask to them the question is it is
proper to use the ñ or not on lists.
In a nutshell (their complete answer, with English translation, at the end of
this message) is:
The use of the ñ is perfectly valid. ch and ll should be avoided because they
are digraphs. If the document must be sent outside Spanish area the
international alphabet is then appropriate, but the user have the right to
select to use the ñ or not.
In this case, having a new entry on the lists types will be useful
So I'm reopening this issue.

Original text:

English translation
In the creation of schemes or arrangements of epigraphs with letters one does
without the ch and the ll precisely for being digraphs or sets of two letters.
In principle, there is no problem in using ñ, because it is a letter of the
Spanish alphabet. It is possible to choose any criterion you prefers providing
that this one is kept coherent in all the work. Now then, if a publication is
going to have diffusion outside of the Spanish area it would be preferable to
use only the letters of the international alphabet, which does not include the
ñ.

BTW: on a side note, on the last years I had the opportunity to visit several
theatres on the north of Italy (some of them really big, like the auditorium of
Milan conservatory). On all those theatres the rows are "numbered" with
letters... of the Italian alphabet: no trace of j, k, w, x or y.
So I think the problem is not only with Spanish.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1- Install Linux Libertine G font from here: http://numbertext.org/linux/
2- Open a Writer document and type the following text

Some text \prime Some text fi more text

3- Modify the paragraph style to use the Linux Libertine G font with "tex mode"
enabled (on the font name box type: Linux Libertine G:texm=1)
"\prime" will change into ' and fi will be replaced with proper typographical
ligature.
4- Put the cursor on the end of the paragraph and use the cursor arrows to go to
the left one character at a time.

Actual result:
While the cursor behaviour is OK on the fi ligature (and this is an improvement
respect OOo 3.2.x), when you arrive to the "prime" the cursor will jump to the
right, possible going to the position where the text \prime should be if "tex
mode" were not enabled.

This behaviour is confusing because the cursor jump to a text position, but if
you press "back space" the text deleted is the one "hidden" by the Graphite
replacement, not the one where cursor is shown.

Problem is also present on DEV300m89

The "Real Academia Española" eliminated ch and ll from the alphabet at least 20
years ago (they are included as part of c and l, respectively, on the
"diccionario de la real academia española").
Spanish is my native tongue. Even if I cannot find now a clear document (I'm
living now at 15000 kilometers from my old text books), I clearly remember at
school using ñ on alphabetically "numbered" lists...
I'll look more deeply on this later (if I can gather some time), but the problem
is more general: For instance, on Italian j, k, w, x and y are NOT part of the
alphabet...

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1- Set the language for a document to Spanish
2- Start a numbered list with more than 15 lines
3- Edit the list properties to change from numbers (1,2,3) to characters (a, b,
c)

Result:
After item n comes item o

What should happen:
Because Spanish alphabet have 27 characters with ñ between n and o, the list on
a Spanish document should use the Spanish alphabet.

Inside the image_oxygen.zip file /res/commandimagelist/es the replacement for
bold, italics and underline are wrong in two sences:
- They are from crystal icon set
- They show a B instead of an N (for "negrita"), an I instead of a C (for
"cursiva") and a U instead of an S (for "subrayado").
I discovered this by replacing the crystal icon set on 3.2.1, Spanish
localization, with the oxygen icon set from dev300m82, obtaining a not so nice
result that is fixed if I change the language for the interface into English.

The option you get when you select two objects and go to right click -> Connect
is wrongly translated as "Unir". It should be "Conectar".
This error creates confusion because the option (Shapes ->) Merge is also
translated as (Formas ->) "Unir" (which is right).

I just downloaded and unpacked the 64 bits rpms of 300m79 (local install using
rpm2cpio and cpio to extract rpm contents). On first start it said that java
virtual machine was missing and recommended to install it... but java is
installed and running on my system: 3.2.1rc2 and 300m78 can both see it without
problems and both of them were unpacked the same way.
Manually selecting the java folder on Tools -> Options -> OpenOffice.org -> Java
do not work either.

There is a workaround: insert the footnote near the caption and then cross-
If you want to be certain that the real footnote anchor is on the same page of

When creating a TOC you can insert tabstops between entries, but these tabstops
have not the whole functionality they have on paragraph styles. For instance, if
you select “Align to the right” the following element will be aligned to the
right of the page, not to the right of the tabstop itself.

Usercase: I want to set up a TOC in which the chapter numbers are aligned this
way (the underscore represent a space to show alignment):

...
__9___Chapter
_10___Chapter
but now I can only obtain the following

...
_9Chapter
_10___Chapter
by adding to TOC's tabstops the same alignment capabilities you find on
paragraph's tabstops this would be easy to accomplish with an arrangement like
this one:
T E# T E T #
with the first "T" aligned to the right of the tabstop itself, the second to the
left and the last one to the right of the page.
Only workaround I found is to NOT use the chapter numbers on the TOC, but to set
"index 1" paragraph style to use a numbering style properly aligned that mimic
chapter numbers. But this workaround is painful if you have several outline
levels.

On Calc there is now an option (hidden, I hope it will be more visible in the
future) to use the English functions: I think an option to use the English names
for Greek characters on Math expressions will be useful also, specially for
those coming from LaTeX.

This problem is still true, six years after it was originally reported, on 3.2.
Sadly, converting the metafile into a bitmap is not a good workaround because in
this way you lost the vector properties for the image. Under some circumstances
it is possible to convert the graph to "curve", but not always...

Just open the attached document on Linux, click on the text marked red and the
cursor will jump to the beginning of the page or even to the footer of previous
page. I can reproduce the behaviour with the attached document on 3.2rc1 64
bits.
The document was originally created on OOo 2.x (I only "masked" the text to make
it public). Recreating (copy/paste unformatted text) the document on 3.x fix the
problem so it is something related with how OOo 3.x manage documents from OOo
2.x.
Everything about the problem is in the previous messages.

User case:
1- Install dictionaries for Spanish and Italian.
2- Set the language for two different paragraphs: one in Italian, the other in
Spanish.
3- In the Italian paragraph, type the word "raccomandare"
4- In the Spanish paragraph start typing the word "racimo"
Result:
When you type “rac” in the Spanish paragraph, autocorrect suggest "raccomandare"
which is wrong because you are typing in the Spanish paragraph, not in the
Italian paragraph.

This is a problem for translators when the languages are akin. The problem is
also present if you have two documents opened at the same time, one in each
language.

PD: I tag this as "enhancement" but in certain cases could be considered as a
"defect" because it gives a confuse input to the user.

I can see the problem. It seems it arises from the fact that the line is a "real
line" anchored to the header/footer and not a paragraph border (which works ok).
It seems that when exporting to pdf this particular object is shown only on the
first page and not repeated.
Tested on OOo 3.1 (Sun) and on DEV300_m52 on Linux.

I have a similar problem with my OOo 3.1 (Sun build) 64 bits on openSUSE 11.1. I
have three jvm on my system and OOo always select the first one on the list.
The problem (in my case) is not that OOo cannot overwrite the configuration
file: the problem is that OOo overwrite it too much!
I noticed that when I select a different jvm under Tools -> Options ->
OpenOffice.org -> Java the file
~/.openoffice.org/3/user/configjavasettings_Linux_X86_64.xml
is changed, but if I restart OOo the file is overwrite and the old setting
restored!
As a work-around, I changed the setting in OOo and then changed the file
permissions to make it read-only.

Hierarchical page style will be great. Some time ago my editor decided that the

font type and size in no time (just edited "Default" paragraph style), but the

A work-around is to use manually inserted cross references: Selecting the
figure/table/etc number and Going to Insert -> Fields -> Others -> Cross
reference tab, select "Set reference", give a name to that reference and then
use _that_ name (not the list with the field entries) from "Insert reference"...
just the same you need to do to cross reference _between sub-documents_.
This is a lot of useless work, because you always need to cross-reference more
items _inside_ a sub-document than _between_ them: keeping track of hundreds of
cross reference names is clearly more work than listing only a few dozens...
IMHO, this issue needs a higher priority... specially if we consider it was
reported six years ago.

Universities are by default multi-language environments. In that situation it is
quite common to have several people working on the same project from systems
that are setted with different languages. In that situation, using different
"translations" to name the _same_ symbols is not acceptable. And the proposed
solution "don't like it? Change it yourself" is not serious.
This problem is not only with French: Spanish Greek characters are also
"translated". In fact, some translations are wrong: "epsilón" is not a Spanish
word...
I cannot understand why this "translation" is performed, specially with all the
other commands still in English (please, DON'T change them...).

I'm working on a document that must be processed through pdflatex (editor's
choice), and that means every graphic must be in pdf format if I want they
remain as vector graphics in the final output (eps don't work with pdflatex).
But the pdf export create full page pdfs, even if you choose "selection" (1). My
graphs have different size, and that means I need to use one Draw document for
every single graph... and they are ~40.

(1) I'm not complaining about pdf export: for pdf output it makes a lot of sense
to use the page definition.

[sw-issues] [Issue 96213] Page breaks in Master Docu ment saved in OOo 2.4.1 are lost in OOo 3.0, a nd cannot be recovered

The problem is easy to reproduce. I'll repeat here the comment I wrote in the
OOo community forum
(http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=11570):

"I've seen this in the following scenario: in my document, heading 3 does not
use automatic page breaks neither in master nor in the sub-documents, BUT, if I
modify ONE heading 3 paragraph in a sub-document to include a page break before
it, this "manual" page break is ignored by the master."

Afterwards, I also tried to introduce a manual page break in the sub-document
through Insert -> Breaks, with the same result: the page break is absent in the
master document.

"use OpenOffice.org 1.1 tabstop formatting" was never a "compatibility mode" for
me: I just consider that it is a nice feature. But it is just me, it seems. I
can live with that...
For the first problem, why there was no warning? I never see any comment
anywhere. I cannot find any reference to this in the (very difficult to read)
release notes.
I think there will be a lot of trouble from this. A link in the download/main
site page with a "what it is different now" list is needed. For instance, people
who want to use the new feature will need to rewrite all their templates and
recreate all their documents...

OOo 3 added the capability to use a "separator" between numbering and paragraph
in Tools → Outline numbering → Position tab. There, it is possible to select
"Tab stop" (the default), a space or "nothing" for "Numbering followed by".
The passage from one system to the other gave birth to some new problems:
1- Documents created on a prior OOo version will not be "converted" to the new
system. i.e.: a document created on OOo 2.x will not give you the chance to
select a tab stop separator and the dialogue in Tools → Outline numbering →
Position tab will be the same as in old OOo versions.
2- If in a new document you activate in Tools → Options → OpenOffice.org Writer
→ Compatibility the option: "use OpenOffice.org 1.1 tabstop formatting", no
matter which alignment you choose for your heading paragraph, it will be left
aligned if you have a tab stop as the number/text separator. This behaviour is
shown in the attachment and disappear if you either change the separator from
tab stop to any other option or if you disable the compatibility option.

The lack of an "Apply" button is a big problem in a graphic app like Draw (I'm
tempted to say that it is a "painful problem"). I've never understood why this
button is not present in OOo.

I just noticed that gnome/xfce/etc. users have an option under Tools -> Options
-> OpenOffice.org -> General that allows to select between OOo dialogues and the
DE dialogues. This option is missing in kde, as you can see from the attached
image. I tested both, the 32 bits and the 64 bits builds of OOo 3 on Fedora 8
(64 bits) with kde 3.5.10.

The ability to set bookmarks on the save/open dialogues is something that we,
kde users, love and use all the time. In OOo you can only select ONE default
directory for new documents and this is not convenient when you are working on
several projects at the same time. Kde dialogues are wonderful, some OOo
derivatives use them, why the main project don't give us this chance?

Here it is a sample document.
I marked some of the problematic pages (there are more) by highlighting part of
the text in red. If you have the Linux Libertine font in your system, the
highlighted text will correspond to the text that makes the cursor jump.
The file does not show the problem when opened with OOo 2.4.1.
The problem is present in both, the rc4 64 bits version and the final 32 bits
version.

I found a really weird behaviour on one Writer document loaded on OOo 3 rc4. On
some pages, if I click on the first characters of any line the cursor jumps to
the beginning of the page or even to the footer of the previous page!. If I cut
the last 30 pages from the document, this behaviour disappears!
I will add a sample document. Feedback on the Community forums suggest that the
problem is mainly on Linux:

Yesterday I grabbed the rc2 and started a new set of tests. Up to now, I cannot
repeat the behaviour. This is really strange, because the instability was clear
and I had many crashed for three days before disabling the extension. Also,
another user reported the problem on the OOo forums (in fact, the votes for this
issue are not mine):
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=9740
When I enabled the extension again the problems were gone and now rc2 seems to
work without problems.
If nothing change during this week, I'll close the issue. Sorry for the noise.

Steps to reproduce the issue on version 3rc1:
1- Fill a couple of pages with text and save the document with the cursor at the
end of the document.
2- Close the document.
3- Open it again.
Result: the last edited point _view_ is restored, but the cursor is at the
beginning of the document.
Expected behaviour: both, view point and cursor must be on the last edited
point.

It seems that rc1 solved the problem.

I made further tests, and discovered that the bug also exists in cross
references to headings: changing the first character in the heading breaks the
cross-reference field.
I changed the title to reflect this problem, because it seems to me that it is
the same issue.

I found the problem with this regular expression:
\<([^ ]+)[ ]+\1\>
I can use it to successfully find duplicated words without "false alarms" like
"he heard". In the text:
He heard the the bell
the expression find "the the", but instead of
He heard the bell
using $1 in "Replace with" gives me
He heard $1 bell

 Issue #|92125
Summary|New cross-reference to lists system is unstable
   Component|Word processor
 Version|OOo 3.0 Beta 2
Platform|All
 URL|
  OS/Version|Linux
  Status|UNCONFIRMED
   Status whiteboard|
Keywords|
  Resolution|
  Issue type|DEFECT
Priority|P3
Subcomponent|formatting
 Assigned to|mru
 Reported by|rgb

--- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Jul 25 09:44:58 +
2008 ---
Steps to reproduce the problem on OOo 3 beta 2:
First step: Insert a numbered list like
1. First
2. second
3. Third
etc.
Second step: go to Insert -> Fields -> Others -> Cross-references tab, select
"Numbered Paragraphs" and insert a cross reference to item 2 somewhere on the
text.
Third step: go to the second item and change the text from "second" to "Second".
Fourth step: press F9 to update the field.

Result: the cross reference field lost the "insertion point" for the reference
and gives an error.

Expected behaviour: the cross reference field mustn't break.

NOTE: the error happens any time you change the _first_ word on the numbered
paragraph; if you change the following words or add new ones the field works as
expected.

Issue 21263 talks about problems _importing_ M$word footnotes, but this issue is
about _formatting_ NEW footnotes.
mathieu_bonnet is talking about the following:

He heard quiet steps behind him. That didn't bode well.(1)
---
1. The footnote

That is: a prefix and suffix on the _footnote anchor_ and NO prefix nor sufix on
the footnote mark.
IMHO, this is NOT a duplicate of issue 21263, but not being the original
reporter I cannot re-open this one.

For completeness, here it is the text of issue 76398:
Steps to reproduce the issue:
In a new Writer document, edit the "Graphics" frame style in order to add space
below any inserted image.
Insert dummy text and in between it insert an image. When the image is inserted,
the spacing works as expected.
Now, right click over the image and select "caption". Enter any text and press
enter.
Expected behavior: the space set in the Graphics frame style keep a distance
between the image and the caption.
Result: the space below the image is transferred to the new external frame and
no space is left between the image and the caption. Below the external frame a
space NOT set by the user is inserted while the configured space below the image
is lost.
Notice: By re-applying the Graphics frame style to the image only, the space is
recuperated.
Everything behave as if direct formating were applied to both, Graphics and
"external" frame style reverting the spacing settings introduced by the user. In
fact, the frame where the image and the caption is inserted is a variation of he
"Frame" frame style, but with "direct formatting" applied on it: There is no way
to control the default properties of that frame.
Up to the moment, the only way to have a well defined "caption environment" is
to define it by hand, making the whole built-in captioning system useless.
Suggestion: when a caption is inserted, a new frame style must be created (maybe
based on the Graphics frame style, or maybe the same Graphics frame style) and
applied to the external frame without changing the properties of the original
frame. The change is not a great one and will give to the user more control over
the process.

Clear description. I think that every setting that can confuse a new user must
be set "off" by default: it is more easy to explain "how to do something" than
"how to _correct_ something already done".

If a title (a "heading1", for example) is something like this:

This is a very very very long long long title
splited over several lines.

the title field will reflect the whole paragraph, but in my heading I want,
instead of that, the following :

A long title...

That is, a reduced version. In latex, you can assign a brief "alias" to a very
long title (something like \Chapter[brief title]{The very long complete title}),
so if you use a fancy header, the alias and not the actual title is displayed in
the header.
In OOo, the title field display the whole paragraph, correctly aligned with line
breaks when needed, but there is no way to set an "alias", which is an important
limitation to the design of complex documents.

Ups! I misreaded the original problem, sorry... This is not about break a line
with brackets, but to surround many lines with only a pair of brackets...
My fault...
By the way, using stack (or matrix) is a fine solution, though.
Sorry again

You can achieve this effect by using the command "none":
left[ bla right none
newline
left none blabla right]
The point is that brackets must be closed in the same line, but there is no need
to close them with another bracket: using "none" is fine.
Maybe the problem is not with "newline", maybe the problem is with the
documentation of "none" (take a look in the OOo Math forum at
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewforum.phtml?f=6
...)

I've just attached a font that is not remembered by math (for example, the
"black board bold" font for I, code 0x49, is not retained for the next session)

I also has problems with adding new symbols: sometimes works, sometimes not. As
suggested by someone in http://www.oooforum.org/forum/index.phtml it could be a
problem with not true unicode fonts, but I'm not sure about that. The point is:
to add a symbol from, for example, the "Euclide Math Two" font (from
mathematica) only works within the math object where that symbol is defined: the
nexts math objects can't remember that symbol. With other fonts (like Times New
Roman) the process works well...

[sw-issues] [Issue 17198] Outline: Allow line feed in heading while no line feed in TOC

As a workaround, go to Tools -> outline numbering -> Position tab. In the field
"minimum space numbering <-> text" put a number similar to the width of your
text area: that moves the text of your title to the following line and is not
reflected in the TOC.
NOTE: remember to put a space between the number and the text, otherwise the
first character of the word remain in the first line!

This is another aspect of Issue 27377 (Character formatting not retained in
entries of TOC, table lists, etc.).
Both issues really affect technical writers, and avoid the full acceptance of
OOo from scientists. We are still binded to latex...
