My company also requires the filtering to work like Excel's, in that the second
filter choices are limited to those values still present in the data set. When
working with large amounts of data it is imperative to be able to tell what
values are still available after filtering (rather than seeing all options in
the original data set when clicking on the combo box). I hope this feature is
implemented soon, it certainly has my vote.

I have confirmed this issue with versions 109, 125, and the current version as
of 12/30/05. The problem is that the autofilter result list does not update
upon filtering like Excel does. To demonstrate, run the autofilter and click
the combo box for column 1 and select a filter criteria. Now, click on the
combo box for column 2 to further filter this list. Now, if we were using
Excel, the list of options would be limited to what remains in the filtered
portion, not the entire list which is unfortunately what Calc does. For small
spreadsheets this is not a problem. But when working with a large spreadsheet
and you want to see what options for column B remain after filtering by columns
A (in which case you would only need to look at what entries are in the combo
box for Column 1), you will not be able to do so without manually skimming the
cell entries. This should be a relatively easy fix, but one that I feel needs
to be done. Thank you for your help

Robert

Although this may not be a bug in OpenOffice, I feel that this is an issue that
OpenOffice needs to address. If the way OpenOffice is configured does away
with the ability to see who has a file locked, either directly or indirectly,
then OpenOffice is causing a problem. Perhaps there is a way to reconfigure
OpenOffice that it cooperates with the Windows OS much like Microsoft Office
does. If what you said is right, then I would think such a change shouldn't be
to difficult. But again, my knowledge of such matters is minute. Either way,
OpenOffice is not cooperating with my OS so I need a fix of some sort or my
company is going to scuff at the usage of OpenOffice. Do you have a
suggestion? Thank you again.

That helps if I want it done at an exact moment, but I'm looking more for
something that is done automatically by default (like in Excel), I want it such
that after you apply the autofilter it gives the proper list of values rather
than having those entries with trailing spaces as sepperate entries in the
list. Is there no way to set OpenOffice Calc to ignore trailing spaces by
default when filtering? Or is the only option to go through and manually run
this special filter every time I want spaces ignored? Thank you

Sure enough it worked. Renaming the file as .html allowed me to open the table
in Calc by two different methods. I could either Right-click the file -
OpenWith - OpenOffice Calc, or start up OpenOffice then do File - Open -
File Name - Select the Web Page Query (OpenOffice.org Calc) option, then
Ok. In both cases I was able to properly open the file using Calc and resave
it as .xls to be opened by either Excel or Calc. Thank you very much

When I use OpenOffice Calc to add records to spreadsheets originally created
with Excel, and then try to filter and/or sort them, many times the rows added
by using Calc do not filter and/or sort properly. Is there some way I can
expand the filtering/sorting range? I tried selecting all the cells then
clicking the autofilter but that didn't work either. I will attach an example
file. I have tried getting this to work on versions 109, 125, and the new 2.0
but so far have been unsuccessful. I am trying to keep my docs in .xls format
so that I can send them back and forth to individuals that do not have
OpenOffice.

Thank you very much, that did the trick.

Going forward, I would consider this to be a notable difference in
functionality. When validity checking is activiated for a cell, but there is
no list of valid values, Excel interprets that to mean any value is acceptable
while OpenOffice interprets it to mean that no values are acceptable.

Did you only view the file through the browser or did you download it to your
computer and open it with Calc? I downloaded the most recent version of
OpenOffice and tried downloading the file to my computer to open it with
Calc ,like I would normally have to do (since I will work on my files off
line), and the problem still existed (check lines 1-20 and you'll see
examples). However, if I accessed the file through the browser by just double
clicking the attachment, everything edited fine since Calc wasn't being used.
Please confirm that this problem does not exist when you save the file to you
computer and open it with Calc (make sure you use the second file). Thank you,

In Microsoft Office trailing spaces were ignored when filtering a
column. Is there a way to do this in OpenOffice? I've looked through
the documentation and was unable to find the answer to this question.
My problem is that when I run the auto-filter on the records, I will
receive multiple representations for the same value because each one has
a different number of spaces trailing the text. What I really want is
to ignore these trailing spaces like Microsoft Excel did so users don't
need to go in and delete all the trailing spaces. Thank you for your
help.

I don't know if its needed but I checked this on OpenOffice version 109 and 125
on two different NT boxes.

In the attached documents I am unable to change the data in particular cells.
I have been unable to determine any differences between the cells that can be
edited and the ones that can't. The document was originally created in MS
Excel and I have used OpenOffice version 109 on one NT machine, and version 125
on another to work on the document, and in both cases the problem existed. I
need to be able to convert this document if I am to get the migration project
accepted at my company so any help would be greatly appreciated. I just have
no idea why this problem occurs, nor why it only occurs in some of the cells.
I will attach two example documents. - #1 will be the version I opened with
OpenOffice and went through the first 200 records in the Status column
identifying those that were editable with a 4 and those I could not edit with
their their original values (since I couldn't edit them) - #2 will be the
original Microsoft document. The problem existed in more than one column, but
for testing purposes I focused only on the Status column. Thank you for your
help

Seeing as you got different results I tried opening the stripped down file that
I attached and your right it worked fine, somehow in the process of deleting
the values in the file I managed to remove the problem. I will confirm the
sensitivity of the document on Monday with the individual who gave it to me, if
its not sensitive information, I will attach the original so that you may test
it on your end and see the problem that I have been having. In the meantime I
will try to reproduce what I did to ascertain how the file can suddenly be
opened without a problem. Thank you for your help and I will follow up on
Monday.

I have a document which was originally an html doc but has been since converted
to .xls using a script. The .xls file opens fine with Excel but I cannot get
it to open with OpenOffice Calc. Everytime I try it just opens it with Writer
instead. Instead of getting a small table I get multiple pages of code. I
have tried this with OpenOffice version 109 and 125 on two NT machines but to
no avail. Any help in getting this to work will be greatly appreciated. I
will attach the example document in a moment.

Would you have any suggestions as to how I can get this to work, or is it
simply something that can't work. Its a real problem when a file is locked
when you need to edit it, and you can't determine who has it opened. Thank you
again for your patience and support.

I doubt it because in my case no error dialog ever comes up. It just that
after you click close and select update, the org chart is drastically different
in size. Also, the application I was using was not Math but was actually
Impress. Thank you for your help.

Are you sure, this doesn't sound like an OS issue. The problem is that it is
reporting the wrong name of the user opening the document. I don't fully
understand where the information regarding who has opened a document is stored,
but I can only imagine that it is attached to the file itself. If this is the
case, wouldn't this be an OpenOffice issue. Shouldn't OpenOffice be attaching
metadata such as this to a file upon opening it, so that it can be known who is
using the document. I am trying to integrate OpenOffice into our workflow and
it is important to my company to know who has a file locked so that if changes
need to be made quickly we can tell them to close the document (this is to
large of a company to just yell it out or send a mass email). If it is not
possible to acurately identify a user as having a file open with OpenOffice,
please let me know. The strange thing is that it correctly identifies the fact
that the file is open but is unable to determine who has it opened. Thank you
for your help.

I've had this problem occur both when using version 109 and 125. I have this
org chart created with PowerPoint 97 and I am trying to work with it in
OpenOffice. I open the file and everything is fine, however if I double click
the image and edit it, then close it (and in the process click the update
option) the image is either far smaller than it was before or so huge that all
I see is the blank corner of the image on the slide, the rest of it is floating
below many times larger than it was. I've tried protecting the size and
location before editing the image, and still the image is resized. I've also
tried saving the document either as a .ppt or a .odp, and in both cases the
condition still occurred when using OpenOffice. Another strange things is that
occasionally the org chart looks fine after updating it. I just have no idea
why this won't work all the time so any help you can provide will be greatly
appreciated. I will attach the document shortly. Thank you

We are using OpenOffice version 109 on XP machines. When a document is opened
in Word, it sets the file lock correctly and reports that the user (lets call
him Bobo) has it locked. Once the user fully exits that document and another
user opens it (lets call him Kiko) with Writer, he now has the file locked for
editing. If any other user (lets call him Carl) then tries to use Writer to
open that file for editing, the system tells them it's locked by another user,
which is correct, but it incorrectly reports Bobo (the last Word user that
opened it) and not the actual current user who has it opened (Kiko), as having
it opened.

Is this because of OpenOffice's ability to bypass Microsoft Read-only password
protection? Or is there something else going on? In order to replace Microsoft
Office with OpenOffice we need to know how to set it so that when a file is
opened using OpenOffice it will lock it in such a way that when another user
gets the I'm locked message it will tell them the name of the user who
actually has the file open. If this is impossible using OpenOffice please let
me know, thank you.

I realized that I did not fully clarify the situation in which this even
occurred. This problem only occurred with version 109 on an XP machine. Our
NT machines with OpenOffice version 109 on them, do not exhibit this problem
and can open these same files with no problems. I have currently been unable
to test this out with a newer version of OpenOffice.

I am working with version 109 on one NT box, and version 125 on another NT
box. This problem occurred in both cases. The documents in question are 2,000-
3,000 KB in size and have various images, some from Visio others pasted from MS
Paint. In either case, if you watch the list of processes in the task manager
when you save the document, you will notice that a sepparate instance of
Visio.exe (or MS Paint depending on source of image) is created for each image
in the document. I figure the long save time has to be due to these images
because the same does not always occur when pasting images. Any ideas on what
could be happening or possibly a way to fix this problem. We're talking at
least 1 minute of waiting for the file to load up. Thank you for your help

When I looked at the structure of the TOC entries, using Edit Index/Table, I
did have an end link (LE) at the end of each line in my original submission,
but for some reason it wasn't working for the Introduction entry. When I
looked at your revised version, which does work on my machine, it showed that
there was two (LE) endlinks at the end of each line. Is there something wrong
with my version? Or is there something else going on here. I can add two end
links to the end of my lines if the workaround is all I have, but if we can
find out why your machine showed no end link, and mine does show an endlink, I
think that would be best.

NOTE: I made sure that I was looking at level one when I was reporting the
above, as level one is where the link was not working.

What version of OpenOffice did you use?

Thank you for your help

Thank you very much for your help. I looked over the document and all the
links are working fine, thank you. I was looking over my submissions and
realized I completely forgot to mention the source of the document, and I
apologize for this omission. The template was originally created using
Microsoft Office and I do not know the original creator as they have already
left the company, therefore it would be very difficult to reproduce the
technique for developing the document. When I first opened the document with
OpenOffice, none of the links worked. I saved the file as .odt, and modified
the structure by adding links, and this corrected the link problem for all but
the three I created this issue for. There was another oddity that might lead
us to why these issues are occurring. When I looked at my structure for the
TOC, in some of the levels there would be two text boxes right next to each
other instead of having a button in between them.

I need to try and make sure that whatever solution I develop, I can convert the
document back to a .doc without unfixable corruption. I tried converting your
modified document back to a .doc so that it could be opened with Microsoft
Office and multiple things happened when trying to open it with Word 97. The
links no longer work and the table is no longer recognized by Word as a table
(you can neither update or edit the table, it is essentially an image that
cannot be selected for any reason). I'm currently working on this issue since
now I can (thanks to you) get the table to function properly in OpenOffice.

I spoke with grsingleton and his suggestion is that when converting Microsoft
to OpenOffice and vice versa, it is best to just delete the TOC and reconstruct
it (not a big deal as it is a fairly simple process). The problems are likely
to have been solely due to the conversion process, which when it comes to TOCs,
is known to present difficulties. I don't think further analysis into this
situation would be any good unless it was for the purpose of improving the
filter.

When I use OpenOffice to open my Microsoft document containing a table of
contents, two forms of corruption occur. The first is that the first heading,
Introduction, now has a 0 in front of it instead of a 1 like it should (like it
does in Word), and the table of contents also reflects this change. The second
issue is that now my table of contents skips from 0 for the first section to
1.2 for the first sub section (which was originally 1.1), then all numbers from
here on follow this same pattern (they are all one section to deep because of
the section 1.1 that was skipped). I was using OpenOffice version 109 on an NT
box when the aboved occured. When I checked it against version 125 on a
different NT box, the number in front of Introduction disappears all together,
and although all the level 2 portions of the table are fine, the level three
portions of the table are all 1.1.(something), instead of varying
1.1.(something), 1.2.(something), 1.3.(something), etc, when the subsections
fall into different level 2 sections. Does anyone know what is going on here,
and perhaps how to resolve this issue. I will attach an example file.

Thank you in advance,

I have tried everything I can think of to create a link for the first entry in
my table of contents. For some reason the first entry (Introduction) will not
let me make the page number a link, like I did for the rest of the table
entries. This is also true for the last two sections of the table which do not
have heading numbers in front of them at all. Also, everytime I close and open
the document the #1 in front of the first row of the table of contents is
changed, maybe this issue is related. I am working with OpenOffice version 109
on an NT box. I will attach an example document. If anyone has any
suggestions on how to get the link to stay, they would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I am working on an NT box with OpenOffice version 109 and Microsoft 97. In
many of my documents that have images in them, when I open up the document with
OpenOffice it places a strange red U into the image (I will attach an example
document in a moment). However, if you open up the image with Word, the red U
is no longer there (note: the images are all originally placed into a document
using Microsoft if that means anything). The red U also is not present in the
printouts, even if I use OpenOffice to print the document. This is not a show
stopper, but is confusing my users and can be a bit irritating. I looked thru
the documentation and found no mention of such a thing. Any help that can be
given would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I am currently working with OO version 109 on an NT machine. I am working on a
doc whose TOC was originally created in Microsoft but I have been editing and
saving the document as an OpenOffice text document (.odt). Everything was
saving fine but when I update the index the entries now take up 2 to 3 lines
instead of just one (it places the periods sepperating page number and heading
on a sepperate line). How can I correct this problem, and what exactly is
going on? It didn't do this at first. I've attached the TOC of my example
document for reference.

I'm also haveing the problem where the TOC entries (in the attached document)
for Revision History and Table of Contents, are duplicated (you may see two to
three copies of these when you update the index. This happens less frequently
but for the documents it happens in I have found no way to alleviate the
problem. If I delete the extras and save the document, then click update index
again, the duplicates return (however if I hit update, without deleting them,
they will not continue to duplicate). Thank you for your help,
Robert

I am working on an NT box, with OO version 109, and Excel 97. I recently ran
across an Excel document with a diagram created on one of its sheets. I opened
the workbook with Calc and everything looked fine, even save it and closed it
with no problem as a .doc. However, when I reopened the file with Calc all the
arrows in the diagram are pointing to different places on the objects and the
lines for the arrows are all over the place. I will attach an example
document. I would like to be able to use OpenOffice on these documents without
them getting corrupted so please let me know if there is something I am doing
wrong. Thank you for any help you can give.

In the above situations, I was referring to reassigning the default application
for spreadsheets, powerpoints, and text documents and the problem still
exists. The only way I have found to get things to work again is to repair the
install.

Now I have gotten the same problem to occur if I try to assign OpenOffice Calc
as the default application for opening .csv files. When I make Calc the
default application for .csv files I run into other problems as well. I get an
error dialogue saying Cannot find the file (filename).csv (or one of its
components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required
libraries are available. After this dialog is when I get the same errors as I
got before (when I changed the default applications for text documents,
presentations, and spreadsheets.

I am currently using OpenOffice version 109 on an NT box. Everytime I open the
attached file with Writer I lose a particular bit of formatting. If you look
at the bottom of the document you will see, center aligned, Comprehensive
Instructions Manual for OpenOffice This bit of text is supposed to be
underlined. If you underline it, save it, then open it with a browser you will
see that the underlining is still there. However, if you open the document
with OpenOffice the formatting is gone and if you save it and open it with a
browser it is still gone. Every time I edit this document I need to
reunderline this title. I am reporting this figuring that although this is not
to serious of a problem in my case, it may be a serious bug in other cases.
Thanks,

If a user tries to reset the default application, on an NT box, using
OpenWith - Always use this program to open this type of file, they will run
into the strange issue of being unable to double click to open a file with
spaces in its name. If the target file has spaces in its name you will get
multiple error messages, each one saying that the file does not exist and each
one with one of the words in the spaced name as its filename In other words it
parses the name into sepperate filenames as if there are now many files instead
of just the one. Apparently, once you install OpenOffice this same parsing
problem will happen if you ever try to use OpenWith-Microsoft Word (Excel,
etc) [independent of whether or not you are trying to make Microsoft the
default application]

I know that you can unset OpenOffice as the default by other methods, but some
of my users have done it using this route and ran into this strange error that
I felt was worthy to report. Any help into this matter would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you

We recently came accross a bug where we could not open a file if we navigated
directly to the file by UNC name. When you double clicked the file the
hourglass thing would go for a sec or so and then would go away, the
application never actually fired up. We reproduced this with various files on
our LAN. Interestingly enough, if you moved the file to the desktop you could
open the file fine with OpenOffice. You can also open the file if you navigate
to through a mapped drive or if you use FileOpen within OpenOffice.

This is a serious problem. I am working with OO version 109 on an NT box. In
Calc, when I copy data from a bunch of cells to a sepperate sheet in the same

changes the contents of the original copied cells. This unfortunately created
an absolute mess. I will attach an example file. Thank you for your help.

I am running OpenOffice version 109 on an NT machine. In Calc I am unable to
sum two cell entries and I think its due to a glitch. From what I can tell its
due to the fact that the two cells I'm trying to add together both are computed
by using another cell in the sheet. I will attach the document I ran into the
problem with in a second. I tried summing the entries in column 1 and column2
and place them in the final total column but it would just put numbersigns
there. No value pops up. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Stupid me, never mind. I'm half asleep and didn't realize that the reason I
was getting number signs was because the column was to narrow. This could be
rather confusing to users though now that I think of it. This may be something
you would want to change in the future. Thanks anyways and sorry for wasting
your time,

Robert Volke

I have OpenOffice v109 and work on an NT box with MS Office 97. I was testing
how OpenOffice handled Microsofts password encrypted files when I found a
potential bug. OpenOffice respected the passwords that do not allow users to
open particular documents, however if the document was only given a password
(when being created in MS Office) to prevent editing, OpenOffice could open the
document, edit it, and save it with name without having to type in the
password. This is a serious security concern, in this case it would be better
that it couldn't open the document at all. This issue is present in both
Writer and Calc and I haven't tested out impress as of yet. Before I can roll
this out to my company I really need to know how to alleviate this problem.
Thanks

I have tried multiple things but for some reason I cannot get the format change
of the heading to save. Any other changes I make to the document save, but if
I try changing the heading to be 14pt Verdana Bold Font, it will look like it
worked, it will act like its saving, but if I close the document and reopen it
the formatting will no longer be there. I am working on an NT box with
OpenOffice version 109. I will attach the document in a moment. Thank you for
any help you can give.

Thank you for your assistance, and no worries I followed your workpretty good.
Your a very thorough tester. I tinkered around with it myself and I found a
roundabout way to get it to work. I just edited 'heading 10' to be Verdana
bold at some percentage (strange I didn't have the option to set it to 14pt but
had to choose a percentage), selected the heading, and gave it the
format 'heading 10' that I edited and it saved properly (didn't go away when I
closed it). I think I moved the image out of the way while I was doing this
but I'm not sure, I too ran quite a few tests but was not as thorough with my
documentation. Let me know if you or anyone else needs any more info to figure
this bug out. Thank you again for your help.

After I updated to version 104 I no longer had the above problem. Before
updating I was running version 79 so I think there must have been a bug
regarding NT boxes in this particular version. Thank you for your help
everyone.

Every time the crash occurs I first opened the .ppt file using OpenOffice
Impress (from beta 2.0) then tried saving the document as a .ppt again. As
soon as I tried this the software crashed. I'm working on an Windows NT box
and the newest version of power point I have is 97 and it opens and saves the
document fine. I'll attach the powerpoint, I don't see a button here for it so
I assume you can do it after submission. Any help you can provide would be
greatly appreciated.
