This would be the standard if a slide is to contain only a formula. Now suppose that you think that you also need some other content apart from the formula. Go to the layout selector and click on the title+content layout. Rather than getting a content frame in addition to your formula, you get a formula as big as the text frame. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [graphics-issues] [Issue 109918] Quirks in zoom in impress
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=109918 --- Additional comments from sergiocalleg...@openoffice.org Mon Mar 22 09:13:01 + 2010 --- Hi, I will make the required tests as soon as possible. For now, I can anticipate the following considerations: 1) Point 1 is indeed quite frequent. 2) Point 2 tends to happen only with very large presentations. I wonder if it can be related with the time needed to create the anti-aliased miniatures to appear on the left pane. 3) Point 3 tends to happen quite erratically and I still have not been able to find a predictable pattern. The only thing that I am noticing is that it tends to happen most often when using documents originally made with previous versions of OO. 4) All the issues were found on Ubuntu 9.10 either 32 or 64 bit, yet not using the ubuntu version of openoffice (which is buggy), but the one downloaded from openoffice.org. In the last days, I have tried to pack a small example capable of reproducing the issues. Unfortunately, whenever I try to make a new or a small presentation, it works fine. If I cannot succeed in creating a small sample file, I will ask to privately send a large existing presentation to someone who can look into the issue. But still they could hinder the good impression that OO should give to new users. 1) When you open a presentation, very often the initial screen shows the initial slide at a 7% zoom or something like that, with the entire screen entry and the slide the side of a dot in the middle of the screen. You need to zoom in to 100% to actually see the slide... why? 2) When you open a presentation it often takes a few minutes (minutes, not seconds) for the zoom slider in the bottom right corner to appear. 3) When you ask impress to zoom a slide to the optimal zoom, quite often OO zooms to a wrong zoom level, as if the slide contained objects outside the page, when in fact select-all indicates that there are no such objects. This most often happens when you have text boxes on the page. When it happens, often there are text boxes that are hard to select (i.e. clicking on them you do not get the handles, and you need to select a wide region containing the text box to actually select it). Most likely the 3 things are related. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Reverted to OO 3.1.1 from official openoffice file, recovered content from an older backup copy. 4) Moved on another machine where I had OO 3.2 build 9 (RC2 again) from http://ftp.linux.cz/pub/localization/OpenOffice.org/ and experienced the issue again. On the first machine the issue manifested with OO complaining during save that some file in tmp dir was not accessible. Then the save resulted in a file that did not have any OLE object. On the second machine the issue manifested with OO saving without errors, but again a saved file missing all OLE objects (OO giving a small icon with the letters OLE for some of them). Sorry, I do not have the bad file. I only have a recovered good file. I am encountering problems in OOO310m11. This is the ubuntu linux build of openoffice (available in the ubuntu PPA area managed by those in charge of preparing the openoffice packages for the forthcoming ubuntu edition). You can find it at http://ubuntumanual.org/posts/175/upgrade-to-open-office-3-1-in-ubuntu-jaunty-intrepid-hardy As far as I know it derives from a go-oo source. It declares itself as OOO310m11 build 9399. I am using it on an ubuntu jaunty machine with the 32 bit version of the OS. Video drivers should not be relevant as I am having the same problem on different machines using intel and ati video hardware. The problem appears with any font (I have tryed Arial and Helvetica, namely one ttf and one type1). Also, gnome/kde makes no difference. Now I had to downgrade most of my machines to 3.0.1 (I make presentations containing math and I just cannot afford having subscripts mangled). I have saved one, just in case you need further experiments. If you want I can test the official openoffice.org build of 3.1 there, but in general terms this is not a viable solution for me since official sun builds do not properly support internationalisation (e.g. you cannot easily install Italian and English simultaneously because there are no deb packages specific for the cauntry support, nor I get the Italian deb packages for a 64 bit os). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. It's the ubuntu/go-oo build that has broken openoffice (again!). The official version does not choke on subscripts. Do you thing that there is a way to convince the official ooo packagers to split the software among the different rpms/debs so that the i10n bits have individual debs and multiple language support can be installed? Curiously when putting the cursor over them for editing, as long as the cursor is over them they display correctly. 2) rendering problem with boxes containing text text is displayed too low (so with normal box height, text exits the box from below) As above, when putting the cursor over the text for editing, it temporarily displays correctly. Problem does not only affect display, but also postscript generation (for printing) and pdf generation for export. With this bad rendering OO is not anymore a viable solution. [sc-issues] [Issue 84090] When using printer metric s calc often gets automatic cell height wrong
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=84090 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed Oct 8 08:55:41 + 2008 --- Hi, I am currently trying to identify a test case... but when you need to find one obviously it does not come out easy. I'll try to describe the issue more thoroughly, though. Suppose that you have a cell characterised by a given width and that you want to write text into it. Also suppose that the text/font combination that you use makes a line fit almost exactly into a line, but not really. So that in the end, a word of the line goes on the next line. The algorithm computing the cell height at some rare times seems to get this wrong. The result is that the cell is 1 line too short, as if the line that got broken (and that would not get broken without the use printer metrics setup) was not broken at all. At times also the opposite comes out. The cell is auto-fitted to be one line too tall and remains with some empty vertical space. Of course this is a much smaller issue since the cell remains perfectly readable in this case. If I run into this issue again I will try to submit a screenshot. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Changing PDF export options (including PDF/A) does not change the thing 3) Passing the output PDF through ghostscript (e.g. with ps2pdf14) reduces it to 20 kB loosing no feature. Something must have gone wrong with the pdf export filter. The pdfs that write (and possibly the other applications in the suite) produce are so big that they cannot be archived and make people unhappy when they are sent as email attachments. Some analysis reveals that: 1) The pdf file as exported by OO embeds full sets of fonts (not just the needed subsets - why?) 2) The pdf file as exported by OO embeds the same font many times with different encodings (both built-in and custom - why?) This issue is important: if pdf export is so bad at file sizes, for most uses it is better to advice people to avoid it all together, going back to printing a ps file and then converting it to pdf. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. If I open a document that includes macros in normal mode, I can get a dialogue to authorise or not authorise the usage of the macros in the document. However, if I open a document that includes macros in headless mode, there is no way to authorise openoffice to use the macros. There should be either: a) a command line option for that; or b) a predefined openoffice macro that can be called from the command line to open a document with the macros activated. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sw-issues] [Issue 10384] filter to import pdf files
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=10384 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Jan 25 13:42:32 + 2008 --- The A, B, C cases are forgetting the situation where one wants to use PDF as a simple read-only vector graphics format, like one does with pdfLaTeX (unless this is incorporated in case B). Cases A, B and C add many complications to this (rather simple) goal due to the need to extract at least some elementary layout information. Hence, in my opinion, trying to satisfy the goals of A, B, and C, has the rather high price of keeping on postponing the much more simplistic usage of PDF import above. At first sight the functionality might appear unnecessary. The very PDF-Import wiki, for instance says: For now we uses a workaround making from the PDF-page a EPS with tiff-preview who can now be placed in a OO-doc. The previeuw is low-resolution but the EPS is printed in its original resolution seeming to suggest that for now this is more than acceptable. In my opinion it is not, for a few reasons: 1) It is not true that the EPS is printed in its original resolution. At least not always. If you try to print it on virtual paper via an export to PDF - distribution as a PDF - print from acrobat reader or xpd, you will see that the eps image gets in the exported PDF as a low resolution bitmap. Too sad. 2) If you want to import a PDF image with no desire to edit it, but just to use it in a presentation (impress) then you get an extremely poor presentation. 3) A very easy way to get a hi-quality equation editor in openoffice would be to use LaTeX as a formatting engine, to produce pdf versions of the formulas. But this is not possible now since we have no idea at how to import the resulting PDF. And so the creation of smart packages like eqe or OOoLaTeX is hindered by the fact that they need to produce bitmaps or at best emf files (that have a thousand font-related problems, since they do not embed neither fonts nor encodings). 4) A very easy way to get a hi-quality image generator in openoffice would be to use Asymptote as a code-2-image translator. However asymptote outputs pdf, so we have the same problem as above (just worsened since Asy cannot output emf). So please, even before thinking at A, B and C, give us a plain hi-quality readonly importer for PDF graphics (e.g. store PDF in the opendocument files, render it on screen via xpdf, translate it into postscript for printing via xpdf again). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. This is a problem if you want to write an Italian letter on an US-English build: it is actually a major problem, since not only the letter produced by the wizard must be translated in some of its elements, but (and this is more serious) it gets the wrong paper format (letter rather than A4). Note that correcting the paper size is more critical than doing some translation, because when you switch paper size, the format has a tendency to misplace a few items. Furthermore: A) Why are the letter templates repeated both in openoffice.org2.0/share/template/wizard/letter/country code and in openoffice.org2.0/share/template/country code/wizard/letter while the non-letter wizard templates only exist in openoffice.org2.0/share/template/country code/wizard/wizard name ? B) Why there is no way to add the non-letter Italian (or any other country) wizards to the EN_US build in a similar way to that in which dictionaries can be added? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. It contains an equation in emf format. The equation should read (approximately) {x-xi =-1 = {xi=x-1 {x-xi =+1 {xi=x+1 However on some systems (and notice: just on some systems) it reads as in the attached png file (i.e. the = sign becomes a dot). Note that to see the image with the proper fonts you need to install the Bakoma fonts (as made available by the OOoLatex project). Specifically, on a Mandriva 2006.0 system the rendering is wrong. On an Ubuntu Breezy system, the rendering is correct. This is extremely weird as: 1) both systems use the openoffice package from the openoffice site, not the one shipped with the distro. 2) both systems have exactly the same set of Bakoma fonts. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=57530 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Dec 19 02:44:57 -0800 2005 --- I'll try to express myself better... Postscript defines 35 standard fonts with standard names (such as Times, Palatino, ecc...) On Linux hosts these fonts are available as URW fonts and as such they do not follow the naming convention of postscript (for instance they are called URW Palladio L, etc.) Since adhering to standard names is important to most users, most Linux distribution employ fontconfig so that font aliases are defined. For instance Palatino is defined to be an alias for URW Palladio L. In this way, if one opens a document prepared on a windows host and containing text in Palladio, it is rendered correctly. As of Openoffice 1.1.x, Openoffice was dealing with this correctly... When a text contained something to be rendered in a standard postscript font, the URW font was used (following fontconfig directions), and the font was rendered properly with antialiasing. As of Openoffice 2.0.x, Openoffice uses the URW font (following fontconfig directions), but does not do the antialiasing. Unfortunately this is quite bad: on low resolution screens some fonts when not-antialiased look really orrible (palatino is precisely an example) and make operators think that there is something wrong with the application, or that unix platforms are simply crappy. I regard this as a regression since things were working fine as of 1.1.x. Thanks for your patience. This bug may look rather low priority, but please understand that it is necessary to please users in the font rendering. They often look at this more than at any other functionality, and if it is low quality they start crying loud they want MS back. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. While the official openoffice distribution of Openoffice.org 2.0 for linux has no use hardware acceleration switch, many Linux distribution builds actually have! For instance, openoffice.org 2.0 as distributed by Mandriva linux has a use hardware acceleration switch in the Strumenti (tools) - Opzioni (options) - Vista menu. (I believe that this is a code option that exhists in openoffice and that is disabled in the official build, but enabled in the Mandriva build) Turning on this option makes Impress deliver presentations much faster (quick page switch, better animation), but also makes Openoffice mess up everything in the presentation (fonts/character spacing). Probably, distributions should be warned never to include the use hardware acceleration code in their builds, until this code is perfectioned. However, please fix hardware acceleration, because not using it in 2006 seems at least weird and OO is way too slow at delivering presentations (to the point that if I don't have effects I usually export to PDF and deliver the presentation with acroread). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [framework-issues] [Issue 57530] Font antialiasing partial ly broken
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=57530 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Nov 14 08:49:25 -0800 2005 --- Update... If I get it correctly, OpenOffice does not use fontconfig at all... Mandriva Linux 2006 has a directory called /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1/adobestd35 which contains soft links to all the fonts in /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1/ where the URW fonts (with their URW names) are. Furthermore, the adobestd35 also contains a font.dir and a font.scale files where the fonts are declared with the standard adobe font names. Openoffice 1.1.5 used to read this, to list the 35 fonts with the standard Adobe names and to display them properly, with antialiasing. Now, openoffice 2.0 in the Openoffice build lists the fonts with the standard Adobe names, but displays them without antialiasing. Even if I define a font replacement table with entries such as Palatino - URW Palladio the fonts remain without antialiasing. Somehow differently from this, if I use the recently released Mandriva build of Openoffice 2.0, the fonts with the Adobe names are completely absent. In this case, however, if I define a font replacement table, the characters are displayed with antialiasing. Please, fix Openoffice 2.0 so that it works as the former 1.1.5, reading the fonts.dir file and displaying the fonts with the Adobe names with antialiasing. Even better, please fix Openoffice 2.0 so that it uses fontconfig behaving uniformly with other recent QT and GTK applications. Specifically, all the fonts that are declared as aliases of other fonts in the fontconfig files /etc/fonts/font.conf, /etc/fonts/local.conf and /etc/fonts/conf.d/* are correctly recognized, but are not antialiased on display. For instance, Mandriva Linux 2006 declares Palatino to be p052003l.pfb: URW Palladio L Roman in its /etc/fonts/conf.d/00-mdk-urwfonts.conf.
