That was the case when we had a long start of javaldx binary (replaced by a script), this could lead the user to have multiple instance of soffice.bin running at the same time. But as javaldx is now a small script to give the java libraries, I think that today that's not the case. We still have this problem today on OpenSolaris with SO9 without having a script which deleted temporary files (as this was happening on Mac OS X with the daily cron jobs). We still need a 9.2 release (or 9.1.1 with the last patches we received one month ago, ask Dirk or Dieter) of StarOffice which generate log files when the problem is happening. I see currently two possibilities: 1) The document stream is hold somewhere, that prevents its closing. The stream is opened using system file locking, as result the file can not be overwritten. The probability of it is quiet small, since there is no known scenario in OOo3.0.1 where system file locking still would be used for documents. 2) One of the temporary files related to the storage is removed by the system, as result the document is based on the storage that is not completely valid. Thus the saving might fail. Herbert has already mentioned that such a temporary directory cleaning mechanics is used on MacOSX, so it is a quite probable scenario. In case it is the second case the following workaround should help. In Tools/Options/OpenOffice.org/Paths tab-page please set Temporary files value to any own previously created location. The problem appears sometimes with Calc or Writer document. Actually on the StarOffice on Solaris, it's a writer document (Open Document Format), and on the Mac OS X OpenOffice 3, it's a Calc document. When I try to save the document using the MS file formats, the document could by saved, but then if I save it back to the Open Document Format, the error message is back and the document has an empty size. On could also observe that the autosaver generates an empty file (that's how I could mesure that the problem concern more than one users (we have 700 users). I will prepare a small video with jing project as it could be easier to understand what's happening. When I use the MS filters (save the doc in XLS, it works), but when I tried to save the same document in ODS again back, the same IO Error is back. It seems to be memory corruption in the OpenDocument generation which doesn't impact the MS export filters. I open a case by Sun (number 37848006, opened since the 10th May 2007). As it's not easy to reproduce (quite impossible, there is not set of operation which leads to the problem), I have a document in my OpenOffice (OOO300m10 build:9362) running on my laptop. On Mac OS X, I could use dtrace to get infos for the developpers, if you have a script of what you need. I hope we could find a solution about this issues, as we have 700 users, and this seems to happen about 10 times a week, so the impact is quite bad.
