Thank you to everyone for the suggestions. Now I did this, like vq said:
$ ssh -v -v -v -2 -x -L 2401:localhost:2401 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm attaching 3 screenshots to show the results. Sorry about the screenshots,
but I don't remember how to send this stuff to a file. I haven't used DOS in 10
years, and good riddance to it, I say! :-)

Willy said,
Do those file have to be named id_dsa and id_dsa.pub? That's not the
names of the key files I had. I tried renaming my key files but they didn't
work with either the original names or the id_dsa names.
?
When you create the key, it should be named that way (default name)
see my attachment

Yes, but I *did not* create my key using cygwin. I created it using PuTTY,
months ago. IIRC (and I might be misremembering), PuTTY asked me what name I
wanted for the keys, and I gave them a different name. So the public key I sent
to OOo had a different name. Does OOo store the public key with the name I gave
it, or some other name? I have no idea.

I don't know when I'll have time to look at this again, maybe not for 2 or 3
weeks. BTW, Willy, I'm a she. :-) Cheers, Jean

do you pick SSH2-RSA or SSH2-DSA when creating keys in Putty?
If i'm not mistaken, the default for Putty Key Generator is SSH2-RSA.
You should change this into SSH2-DSA, since this is the key being used.

sorry about that, i didn't know that :(

btw, i attach my successfull tunnelling

It sounds like I should generate a new key using Cygwin and submit it to OOo as
a replacement for the previous one -- in other words start this entire process
over again.

Yes, Louis, I have Cygwin installed. The last quite a few comments on this issue
thread have been regarding my problems attempting to use it to establish a
tunnel, and debugging the problems I've been having with that. (At your request,
I gave up attempting to use PuTTY for tunneling after I caused so much
difficulty for the OOo site.) -- Jean

That's because you didn't place your public and private key in the right place.
SSH always look for it in your $HOME/.ssh directory.
you should make it first by typing mkdir .ssh from your home directory and then
put the files in this directory and try to make tunnel again.

hope it helps.

oh yeah, don't forget to set your permission. It's opsional, but it should be
wise, mainly if you change your mind and migrate to Linux :)
type:
chmod 400 id_dsa*

it output should be like this
-r id_dsa
-r id_dsa.pub

Cygwin itself crated a folder home/Jean Hollis Weber/.ssh when I created a key
using Cygwin itself. Windows would not let me create .ssh under Cygwin/home.

So I had placed my public and private key in the home/Jean Hollis Weber/.ssh
directory. Do those file have to be named id_dsa and id_dsa.pub? That's not the
names of the key files I had. I tried renaming my key files but they didn't work
with either the original names or the id_dsa names.

Willy, you said, type:
chmod 400 id_dsa*

Where do I do that? When I tried it in the Cygwin window, I got the error
message
chmod: cannot access 'id_dsa*': No such file or directory

When I replaced id_dsa* with the name of my key file I got the same error
message (but with the name of my file instead of id_dsa*

I remain totally confused and frustrated by this. -- Jean

it means that you are not in the right directory
perhaps you should do it this way:

chmod .ssh/id_dsa*

using cygwin.

I can imagine that you installed cygwin using text mounts. This IMHO is a bad
and evil compatibility switch and should *never* be used.

[www-issues] [Issue 46991] Cannot access SSH/CVS using PuTTY and WinCVS

Sorry, I didn't see you r screenshot before.

$ ll .ssh/
total 12
...
-rw--- 1 q none 736 Dec 10 2002 id_dsa
-rw-r--r-- 1 q none 600 Dec 10 2002 id_dsa.pub
...

id_dsa.pub must be readable for world, the private key id_dsa must not.

From man ssh:

 $HOME/.ssh/identity, $HOME/.ssh/id_dsa, $HOME/.ssh/id_rsa
Contains the authentication identity of the user. They are for
protocol 1 RSA, protocol 2 DSA, and protocol 2 RSA, respec-
tively. These files contain sensitive data and should be read-
able by the user but not accessible by others (read/write/exe-
cute). Note that ssh ignores a private key file if it is acces-
sible by others. It is possible to specify a passphrase when
generating the key; the passphrase will be used to encrypt the
sensitive part of this file using 3DES.

IMHO not needed in this case, but /usr/share/doc/cygwin/openssh.README sometimes
is good to pinpoint problems.

what does text mounts means?

the id_dsa (private key) can be set to be rw---, but it's useless, since we
should not alter any of the private keys :)
this also happened to public key, so it's wise to set it read only, just in case
we make a wrong action and make them useless. It's just a security matter

 what does text mounts means?

http://cygwin.com/faq/faq_3.html#SEC74

This is set by setup.exe during the installation with the Radio Button:
Default Text File Type. Choosing DOS there might look like a good idea
but is really calling for trouble for some unix utility programs.

Just enter
$ mount
to see how your installation treats DOS text files.
binmode means no special treatment (unix), textmode does CR/LF munging.

the id_dsa (private key) can be set to be rw---, but it's useless,
since we should not alter any of the private keys :)
I know ;) . I wrongly assumed that the missing privilidges on the public key
were the problem.

Perhaps we should remove PuTTY Section at all, so people would have to find
another way to work with CVS in Windows (Cygwin is the best option for this) as
i have made it until now.

how about it Louis?

Here is the latest in my saga. I downloaded and installed Cygwin.

I copied my public and private keys (previously generated by PuTTY and which had
worked to get me into OOo) to the directory where Cygwin looks for them. (I'm
not sure whether that was the right thing to do, but I couldn't think what else
to do, and the instructions assume I'm generating a new key, not using an old
one.)

I followed the instructions on the web pages mentioned earlier in this thread: I
started Cygwin and typed in:
ssh -2 -x -L 2401:localhost:2401 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

At the notice about the authenticity of host openoffice.org can't be
established, I typed yes as instructed and got the message of ooo being
permanently added to the list of known hosts. So far so good.

Next I got the message:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]'s password:

at which I entered the password for my key, and got the message Permission
denied, please try again. After 3 tries, I was kicked out.

I noticed that the sequence was different from the instructions, which said I
would be asked for my passphrase *before* I got the authenticity message.

So... what should I do now? -- Jean

More info, which may be relevant: After aborting the TortoiseCVS operation, I
could not Ctrl+C out of PuTTY. Entering that keyboard command had no effect.
This has happened a few times before when I was trying to use WinCVS with PuTTY,
but at other times I could use Ctrl+C to close PuTTY with no problem. -- JHW

Hi, I think we have to find another way to help you with the SSH/CVS connection.
Every try from your end results in a swamped SSH/CVS system at the site. Nobody
is able to commit changes and the operations team has to restart the system.

As you switched from WinCVS to TortoiseCVS the root cause seems to be with
PuTTY.
Do we know somebody who is successfully running a tunnel with PuTTY?

Greetings, Stefan

I tried to use PuTTY and connect with Cygwin, but it didn't work also, so i used
Cygwin to make a tunnel using OpenSSH and CVS to do my work on the Indonesian
project

I have tried Tortoise and WinCVS, but both didn't suit me well. I prefer to use
command line CVS using Cygwin :)

Sorry, i can't help you for this case

Jean, perhaps you should try downloading Cygwin and see if it works
command line is not that bad :)

okay, given that Willy was the only person I thought using PuTTY, and isn't,
I'm removing the
instructions on PuTTY from the SSH2 Guide and replacing it with what I used to
have, which was a dis-
recommendation.

BTW, a nice guide for Cygwin is here:
http://website.openoffice.org/support/en/howtos/1.html

It's listed from the SSH2 Guide.

cheers
