[AMRadio] OT but of interest to some

2007-05-28 Thread Robert Nickels
The "Big 89 Rewind" aka WLS MusicRadio is back the air today - listen
live at www.wlsam.com if you're not within the sound of Lyle Dean's
voice. Great to hear all the old jocks and news/sports voices back on
the air. And a new website of WLS history: http://www.wlshistory.com/

I guess the High Powered Radio Executives Larry Lujack always talks
about realized people wanted to hear this, and that it wouldn't kill
their Rush listeners if they heard a record being played on the radio...

In place of our March luncheon, fifty hams and guests from around the

[AMRadio] 10 Meter AM Open

2007-05-28 Thread Mike Duke, K5XU
Beginning just after 11:30 AM central time, I had a 15 minute qso with Bob,
K0RDF in Mo.

I had to bale out when the phone rang. Haven't heard any other AM on 10, and
none on 15.

He was running a great sounding Ranger, and I was on my usual Kenwood TS570.

Re: [AMRadio] OT but of interest to some

2007-05-28 Thread Joseph Bento
Now living in Utah, obviously I can't listen to WLS directly - at least
during daylight hours. Nice to listen to the internet stream. I lived in
Chicago for a time 20 or so years ago, and fondly remember them as the "Big
89."

A major interest in my hobby is restoring vintage broadcast receivers, and
also building high-performance crystal sets. I have one local AM station in
Provo that broadcasts music. Otherwise, it's band edge to band edge of
conservative talk and sports. I've set up my own Part 15 transmitter so I
can at least have something worthwhile to listen to on my old radios if the
Provo station doesn't suit me.

Now, KSL in Salt Lake, for example, has gone digital. They still broadcast
analog as well, but the digital content spews 30KHz wide! Why does Rush,
Sean, et al need "digital" AM?

The market might be small, but I believe there is still a market for music
on AM.

Re: [AMRadio] OT but of interest to some

2007-05-28 Thread Jim Wilhite
Here in Oklahoma I have a choice of music, if you can
believe it.

There is an old country station down near Dallas, TX that
plays it plus a small town station about 50 miles away. On
top of that a station about 25 miles South has R&R from the
late 60s to the 80s. There is another station about 25
miles North that has the same format, unfortunately it
subscribes to the same satellite service.

In Dallas there is also a big band station KAAM which gets
some of my attention.

Frequencies for all this is 770, 1190, 1240 and 1470. That
keeps my dial lubricated. But I do miss 50 KW KOMA in OKC
playing true R&R from the 50s to the 80s. They sold 1520 a
couple of years back and now it is talk. The R&R format
moved to the FM band with 4 of the old time DJs from the OKC
market.

As a youth I had it good in SW Oklahoma. 890-WLS, 930-WKY,
1510-KSTP, 1520-KOMA, 1060-WNOE (remember Jack the Cat?),
1200-WOAI, 940-KIXZ, and 990-(I forget their call) in
Wichita Falls, TX.

Aha the good old days.

KNIN is the station I could not recall. It was 990 and
there was another station there owned by Raymond Ruff that
was its competitor. I don't remember what the frequency or
call of the other even though I worked for KIXZ in Amarillo
from 1968 until 1972, also owned by Ruff.

[AMRadio] Better AM audio for a EF Johnson Messenger2

2007-05-28 Thread Bow

Hey all,

Has anyone here ever played with a Johnson Messenger (or Messenger Two) CB
on 10 meters? I am looking for suggestions on how to get better sounding
audio out of the one I have. The Hardwired Crystal "Banana" microphone is
coming off ASAP and I plan on inputting audio from my rack gear, or using a
more modern dynamic microphone.

But I know this thing has to have some audio bandwidth bottlenecks.

Has anyone ever used one on the air?

The schematic is here:
http://www.cbtricks.com/radios/ef_johnson/messenger_2/graphics/messenger_2_s
ch.jpg

For Starters, I think C24 needs to be increased to .22uf, to let some low
end through.

Any other suggestions?

[AMRadio] B&W 850-A vs 852 Pi-Network assembly

Hi all,

I am rebuilding a B & W L-1000-A amplifier deck. The Pi-Network assembly

Does anyone know if the 852 Pi-Network would be a suitable replacement?

Thanks

I remember being amazed as a 10 year-old when a family CB friend changed
from the stock Johnson hand mic to a non-amplified Turner desk mic on his
Messenger 2.

The fidelity improvement was incredible.

So, install your favorite mic connector. Then, follow your ears and your
instincts. If you want to keep the physical appearance unaltered, just put
the connector on a pig tail.

I have two Messenger 1 units awaiting restoration myself. At least one of
them will end up on 10 meters.

The other is so dirty that it may end up as the poster child for a cleaning
product.

Thanks Mike,

So basically, the Mic is a great starting point?

I'm going to fit my favorite 6 pin jack tomorrow, then I will be able to
interchange mics between my mobile rig and the Johnson. While I am not
afraid to modify the radio, I want to keep it looking like it wasn't
installed by a Hack ;)

While I know that the B&W butterfly cap is worlds different from the
pi-net tuning unit, it should be noted that the wider the impedance
rage, the easier it's going to be to match it with a 'normal' sized
capacitor. The capacitance on the tuning cap in my push-pull, link
coupled final isn't -quite- enough for 75m. A split-stator capacitor
was added in parallel to allow the tank circuit to resonate on 75m.

I understand if you think the 850-A is what you've designed the rig
around, but from what I see about the 852, it's range is more dynamic.

Something to think about.

RE: [AMRadio] Better AM audio for a EF Johnson Messenger2

2007-05-28 Thread Bob Peters
Bow that Banana mike was a great Mike but a D-104 amplified would serve
you better...If you don't want the banana and if it is chrome in good
shape I would love to buy it from you...I collect great mikes...

Thanks Bob W1PE Dallas

Subject: [AMRadio] Better AM audio for a EF Johnson Messenger2

Hey all,

Has anyone here ever played with a Johnson Messenger (or Messenger Two)
CB on 10 meters? I am looking for suggestions on how to get better
sounding audio out of the one I have. The Hardwired Crystal "Banana"
microphone is coming off ASAP and I plan on inputting audio from my rack
gear, or using a more modern dynamic microphone.

But I know this thing has to have some audio bandwidth bottlenecks.

Has anyone ever used one on the air?

The schematic is here:

For Starters, I think C24 needs to be increased to .22uf, to let some
low end through.

Any other suggestions?

Bow

Hey - I'm searching for info on a B&W 851 assembly - does your info cover
that model? If so, I could sure use a copy too.
Thank you...

RE: [AMRadio] Better AM audio for a EF Johnson Messenger2

2007-05-28 Thread Ed Sieb
Bow,

I would change out the following capacitors to .1 uF  (or .22 if you like;
there won't be much diffeence):
C24, C31 and C35. C24 is key, while C's 31 and 35 will also affect
receive audio (more lows). While your at it, remove resistor R48, or make
it much smaller. It controls power output.

Finally, you can either leave R22 as is, or change it out for a 10 megohms.
10 megohms is required when using an un-amplified D104. Otherwise, that
4.7 megohms is satisfactory for most Hi-Z mics.
