Re: [AMRadio] Farnell Automatic Modulation Meter for Sale
Hey Todd, I put it on eBay because I didn't have a clue as to what it is worth and I got response when I posted it on QTH.com. It was "thrown in" with a 20V-3 deal that I made some time ago. Had I known its value I would have posted it here on the AMRADIO reflector with an appropriate price tag. You will notice that I don't have a reserve on the item on eBay, which is the case for most of the stuff I sell on eBay. In fact, you will notice that most items on eBay do not have a reserve price. And, BTW there are many auctions (non Internet) where the sellers have a secret minimum selling price and if the item doesn't reach the preset minimum it doesn't sell. Another BTW, anyone that doesn't shop at the Walmart Supercenters(the ones that sell food) is either a fool or has so much money that they are willing to turn their backs on significant savings. I know about how Walmart has forced a lot of local stores out of business and that is too bad but it happened and it is a fact of life. Shopping malls have essentially done the same thing to the small store owners and yet we all go there. 73 OM Bob W6TR - Original Message - From: "Todd, KA1KAQ" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Discussion of AM Radio in the Amateur Service" Sent: Friday, December 01, 2006 10:41 AM Subject: Re: [AMRadio] Farnell Automatic Modulation Meter for Sale On 12/1/06, [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: You can consider buying the item or ignore it, but I don't understand why anybody should be criticized for his selling venue choices. All this talk about an home brew AM transmitter has rekindled my desire to find a legal limit transmitter, something I could drive with my Valiant or a Ranger. Surely there must be a bunch of transmitters out there looking for a new home. I am in central Florida and would be willing to travel to pick up the right rig. I have done the broadcast transmitter conversion thing and I would love to find something that doesn't look like a refrigerator or a juke box. I may even have some amps that would work in a trade scenario. Please send me an E Mail if you have something that you think would satisfy my cravings. One thing, it must be well built. One guy that could said it sounded tinny and crummy. So I switch to the Kenwood and they all say wonderful. I went of over the whole mic again, plugs, wires, grounds and fixed a few things and converted it into a boom mic. I make another contact and he says tinny but could be his receiver... nice guy. He suggests a few caps to check so back to the bench with it. After looking around, I find that the mic wire goes directly to the grid, no resistor divider and no input cap. I now see what that strange mess at the end of the shielded wire is... what is left of a 1m resistor. I replace all this stuff and it still sounds crummy. Then I find that R22 is missing in the cathode circuit of the output side of the first audio. I replace this and it still sounds crummy. To establish "crummy" I set the mic near a nice sounding radio and set up a shortwave receiver in an adjacent room to listen to while loading up a light bulb. In all cases, the Kenwood with the handheld dynamic mic sounds better. The only thing (I have said this many times) that I see left as a possible problem is C59a/b. These were resistors when I started working on it. I replaced these with 47uf and 67uf caps as that was all I had left at the required WV. They are supposed to be 15mf. I am not sure just what these do so the question is... could these cause a lack of lows in the audio? Re: [AMRadio] Phone band expansion gone off topic
Tom, your discourse on the no code licensing was great. I have never looked down at a n/c Extra as being inferior, except in jest, but I can remember having one hell of a time getting my code speed up past 20wpm at the same time I had the theory down pat. They never seemed in sync. I never had to earn my living in the electronics business so the theory was often Greek to me, still is. But understand that a lot of Extras that did have to pass the 20 wpm requirement feel that the FCC or ARRL sold them down the river by eliminating it. Lets face it, the ARRL is really concerned that the Ham Radio hobby is going downhill and that means less sales of product and magazines and they decided that n/c would give the hobby a shot in the arm. They were wrong but it is too late to double back. This hobby is indeed rounding the last turn and the finish line is within sight. Deny this all you want but go to a hamfest and count the young hams. You won't need to even take off your shoes. I usually go to Dayton at least 3 out 5 years and this year the Hamvention attendance was under 20,000. It used to take more than a day to go through the flea market, it was less than 60% full this year and I'll bet that it is even smaller next year. Another indicator of the state of this hobby is the infamous QST magazine. There are issues that contain nothing interesting to hams that have been in the hobby for any length of time. If you scan the Sept issue you can learn how to make a straight key from a door hinge, how to make a UPS that you can buy ready made for under $75 that works better, revisit a extended double zepp that has been in the ARRL Handbook for the last 20 years, a product review of a radio that nobody buys, and a frequency counter. Then comes the final insult; the biggest advertiser in the magazine offers junk for sale, a lot of which are direct copies of other manufacturers' product that are higher priced at least partly because they don't employ prison inmate labor. All this verbiage are my opinions on the state of hobby. Yours may be different, probably are. Have a good day, see on the bands for as long as we have them. I'm convinced that they are the same people who walked to school 20 miles each way uphill in the snow while carrying their little sister. I, on the other hand, had to ride a bus about 10 miles...a piece of cake and I didn't learn fortitude. (Plus my little sister sat beside me) I've decided to demand that the FCC require me to learn 50wpm code and have a doctorate in Electrical Engineering instead of just an A.A. in Electronic Technology from my Community College. Of course while I'm at it I will demand that they require ALL Advanced and old-time Extras to learn and prove proficiency on each and every mode of transmission including voice whether they have a desire to use those modes or not.. They will have to speak proper English and use proper punctuation in William Shakespeare style while using voice mode. No hillbilly talk like I hear now on the radio. No African-American, French, German, Italian, or other dialects or accents. They must also demonstrate AM, FM, SSB, LSB,USB, DSB, digital, RTTY, spread spectrum and on and on and on. Since they are so smart they will also have to build every piece of equipment that they use including RTTY printers, and make their own batteries with material mined by them too. After all if they buy a battery then they are lazy. Also, since communication had it's roots in early cultures they must show proficiency on smoke signals and beating logs with sticks. I'm 55 years old and have had to readjust my career to changing times. I worked for 3 companies in 28 years and now 10 companies in the last 4 years within the IT field. It is a different world with much younger people in charge. START ADJUSTING! I guess I should have specified plate modulated AM transmitters. You are right, my FT1000 Mark V does have the ability to go on AM but it also goes on FM, RTTY and PKT. I wonder how many people use these modern day transceivers on these modes. Let's stop this thread. Considering the relief in congestion we have already experienced due to the general decline in amateur activity in recent years, there should be plenty of room for all on 75m, without the griping about AM "taking up too much room on the crowded band." Of course, if the FCC eventually eliminates the code requirement, expect an initial spike in activity as hoards of no-code Techs upgrade, but after the initial spike I predict a return to stagnant growth. There should still be plenty of room for AM activity. Once the expansion goes into effect, we should immediately commence AM activity on the new frequencies, including the 3600-3700 kc/s Extra segment. I have looked over the R & O, but I am not sure if it means that 3600-3700 is restricted to Extra class for all modes, or just that Extras can now use phone in the segment. How this will affect non-voice licence class restrictions is not made entirely clear in the FCC document: "12. Regarding the division among license classes of the spectrum on which we today authorize phone emissions, we adopt the Commission’s proposal to authorize stations of General Class licensees to transmit voice emissions in the 3800-4000 kHz frequency segment, thereby increasing by 50 kHz the spectrum for voice communications by these stations. Because we have decided to authorize more 75 m spectrum for voice communications than was proposed in the NPRM, we also authorize stations of Advanced Class licensees to transmit voice emissions in the 3700-4000 kHz frequency segment, thereby increasing by 75 kHz the amount of spectrum for voice communications by these stations. We also authorize stations of Amateur Extra Class licensees to transmit voice emissions in the 3600-4000 kHz frequency segment, thereby increasing by 150 kHz the spectrum authorized to these stations for voice communications. In the 40 m and 15 m bands, we adopt the Commission’s proposal to authorize stations of Amateur Extra and Advanced Class licensees 7125-7300 kHz, stations of General Class licensees 7175-7300 kHz, and stations of General Class licensees 21275-21450 kHz for phone communications." If Generals and above will still be able to use 3600-3700 for non-voice modes, expect digital modes to continue to operate in this segment. I suspect that may be the reason such a big hunk was set aside for Extras - to limit phone activity in that region of the band so that some of the digital stuff can continue on those frequencies. Although the thinking of government agencies is extremely unpredictable, this doesn't look well for the ARRL's bandwidth proposal. If the FCC were seriously considering limitations by bandwidth any time soon, it is unlikely they would have gone to all the trouble to work out this plan, only to have to revise it in the near future to accomodate subbands-by-bandwidth. Looks like we'll soon be able to join the Canadians in their "AM Window" on 3720. The change is expected to go into effect sometime in mid-November. http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-06-149A1.pdf ___ This message was typed using the DVORAK keyboard layout. http://www.mwbrooks.com/dvorak/ http://gigliwood.com/abcd/ __ AMRadio mailing list List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Partner Website: http://www.amfone.net Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net __ AMRadio mailing list List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Partner Website: http://www.amfone.net Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net

Re: [AMRadio] Phone band expansion
Yeah, but I found that talking about how great AM is gets old after a while. I experienced AM first hand as I became a ham in 1956. I had a great time and made a lot of friends. Now that SSB is the mode of choice for most hams, one gets used to VOX operation and the lock and talk becomes tedious at best. I find that when I get on AM(I still have a pristine Valiant and HRO-60), a group gets together and by the time that it gets back around, 20-30 minutes have expired. I was used to this modus operandi back in the 50's but now I prefer a back and forth format. Please don't get me wrong. I enjoy an occasional AM QSO. But I have found that it is nostalgia that attracts me to AM and nostalgia is satisfied by small bites(for me at least). If AM is getting so popular, why aren't there any manufacturers producing any equipment? BTW, after spending over 100 hrs converting the 20V-3 to 75M, I had big time interference to the neighbors. I have no problems with the Valiant and none with my modern SSB rigs. Re: [AMRadio] Phone band expansion
I am in the Tampa area. The reason I sold my 20V2 and 20V3 was once you work the 30 or 40 stations that seem to hang out on 3885, you're done. I don't usually get on in the morning so I don't know what type of activity is on 75. I really don't think that it's too smart to put an AM signal on 3795 in the evening. You(we) are still the minority, you can question the ratio, but since all AM'ers do is "lock and talk" and hardly ever chase DX, why would you even consider going into the "DX part" of the bands. AM'ers need friends, not enemies. BTW, I don't know what you define as a "strapping signal" but I would go up against the best with my SSB signal, especially in the DX window. If you want to set up a schedule sometime, let's see who gets heard on a common frequency out to the mid west. AM has made a huge comeback over the last decade, and the 'gentleman's agreement' you mention seems only to be respected by the AMers. Just check 3870 - 3890 any night, you'll hear them trying to make problems. The reason there haven't been AM issues in other areas in only because the AM group tends to stay up above, certainly not because of any agreement. And as far as battles go, the strapping AM signals win out everytime. If you're pissweak, you're covered up - regardless of mode. Up here in the northeast, AMers make full use of the 'window' as well as other phone frequencies. Which is why the impending move to Florida concerns me a bit. All I've heard about down there is that 'the SSB guys won't let us operate anywhere but 3885' or 'you need to get on in the morning' etc. AM continues to grow as more and more people discover its pleasant sound and hands-on 'real radio' approach. The more AMers get on and use the spectrum, the more AM will grow. Fortunately Bob, there are some good AM signals soon to be on the air down your way, and others on the way down. Fear not, AM will thrive. We just need to get people off their sofas and on the air. Re: [AMRadio] Phone band expansion
Considering the fact that you are outnumbered by 500 to 1 at any given time, I would think it wise to stay up at the top of each band and not go sit in an area where DX is typically found, which is usually at the bottom of each band. Also, since a strong SSB signal can wreak havoc with an AM signal, you're not going to win the battle for the frequency. I operate SSB and AM and I have seen the results of head to head confrontations. Back in the 50's and 60's when SSB was just emerging, they were allocated by gentlemen's agreement to the top of each band because they were the minority. I have coils for 80 and 40 meters, the rig is silent, no fans or variac hum, the power supply is selectable on the front panel between 1200, 1300, or 1500 volts roughly. The rig needs about 20 watts of RF drive, and about 15 watts of audio drive (8 ohms), to give around 300 watts carrier out. All the parts are at the kilowatt level, nothing gets warm or will crap out even if you left it keyed up for a year. Step start is built in, along with push to talk, and negative cycle loading. Everything is metered and adjustable. The mod transformer is an old RCA that seems to sound VERY good, 10,400 ohms to 4350 ohms. The power transformer matches the mod transformer, RCA... [AMRadio] Transformer Rewinding
Some time back in 2005 I found a guy that rewound the power transformer for my HRO60. He did a great job and his price was reasonable. I have another transformer that needs to be rewound and I can't locate his name. Can anyone help me find this guy? I think he was somewhere in the East. Maybe in 3 land, not sure. Bob W6TR.

You're right. Let's all build a spark gap transmitter so we can really be wide!! AM signals are wider than SSB and in the mind of the typical SSB'er we are antiques living in the past. And they are right. I think that the best approach is to ignore the hecklers and detractors. I don't think that the FCC is about to prohibit AM on the ham bands. If many letters are sent to the FCC they must act, this will send a signal, to other law breakers. I would hate to see HF end up like CB or the 435 repeater in So. Calif. If they don't, monitor them carefully and write down their callsigns (if they use any) and other pertinent information, but DO NOT say anything on the air about the interference. Then file a complaint to the FCC. ABSOLUTELY! Last weekend I witnessed this several times, and the weekend before. The times that people ignored it or told the other station they lost them on a fade or had QRN, the jammers got bored or frustrated and left. In three other situations I heard a W2 and others say things like 'someone is dumping a carrier on you' or 'some idiot is trying to jam us' etc. That was all the incentive the idiots needed, the carriers and swishing increased ten fold. It doesn't matter if you say 'They're not affecting you though, I can still hear you' because if they got acknowledged, they know they're having an affect. If you must gratify your urge to respond or need to let the other station know you missed something, do it in an anonymous way so as not to draw attention to the actual culprit. Tell the other station your phone rang, their signal took a dive, someone turned on an arc welder or *whatever*. This will at least let the station you're talking with know that you didn't get his questions or all of what he said. Along the lines of "I missed your last question, Larry - the phone rang' or someone was at the door, etc. Sitting there and calling the guy names, telling the world how angry you are and so on just feeds their enjoyment and makes them more likely to do it in the future. You can't do anything about it, they know it, so disarm them the only way you can: take away their satisfaction. As Phil says, it doesn't work everytime, but from someone who has been stuck in listen-only mode for too long, I can tell you that it works 90% of the time at least. As soon as you let these dopes know that they are getting to you, you are inviting more. Larry is right, the FCC doesn't have the time, resources, or inclination to intervene on every little complaint. Pestering them with every single instance is more likely to make them less inclined to take us seriously when there's a larger issue we'd like dealt with. What the FCC "should do" is a lot different than what they are likely or even able to do. de Todd/'Boomer' KA1KAQ __ AMRadio mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net AMfone Website: http://www.amfone.net AM List Admin: Brian Sherrod/w5ami, Paul Courson/wa3vjb __ AMRadio mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmf

A nice note for silent cooling: The 24 volt DC blowers taken from scrapped Digital Equipment Corporation "VAX 6000" series of computers move a ton of air at 12V and are nearly silent. These old machines are now mostly kept by resellers only, and for parts only. Normally I would never suggest tearing up an old computer, but they are going into the crushers everywhere. The blowers should be dirt cheap! If you can get the front blower, it comes off the machine attached to a ready-made intake plenum, and will sit right on top of most racks. Although the blower is designed to mount with the wheel shaft horizontal, the assembly can be placed flat with the plenum on the rack-top, and the hot air gets sucked up and blown out through the circumference of the wheel. When placed this way, the plenum box is about 12x18x4" tall. The blower assy adds 3". I called Simpson today and after sending them a picture of my broken meter they agree that it is a Model 27. Seems that Simpson doesn't follow form, fit and function rules because their current Model 27 is not like mine. Mine has the vertical stripes down the center on the lower half of the meter. Theirs has fewer stripes down the center but also has vertical stripes on both the lower left and right corners. And glass cutout on mine is different from theirs. I guess I'll use the one that Chris NGW found for me at Orlando this weekend. BTW, Simpson told me that they no longer make RF Ammeters, I assume he meant the Model 27 only. [AMRadio] 20V-2
Cancel my want for the meter panel. I repaired the one that was broken. Still need some meters though. Can anyone give me direction how how complicated putting this transmitter on 160? The book by Bill Carn was great for modifying the 20V-3 for 75 but now I thinking that maybe I would put the 20V-2 on 160. Bob
[AMRadio] 20V-2 Parts needed
Having acquired a 20V-2 here in Florida over the weekend, I find that I need a meter mounting plate. This is the black insulated panel that the 5 Simpson 27's fit into. Also need replacement meters for the multi meter, plate current and the RF ammeter. If you have some of these items that you would be willing to part with, please contact me. Also looking for some pilot lamps and the plate lens. Thanks, Bob W6TR Valrico, FL
[AMRadio] 2C915 Blowers
BTW, @.1" SP the 915 puts out 127 CFM vs. the 914 50 CFM. I checked, it doesn't blow the tubes out of their sockets (at least @ sea level). Bob
[AMRadio] 20V Blowers
I just received 2 new in the box Dayton 2C915 230VAC blowers. They fit nicely and provide a little more air than the 2C914. The 915's have a rectangular output whereas the 914's a round, like the originals. No big deal. You remove all that mounting hardware and rubber shock absorber stuff and bolt them directly on the rear or the chassis. For purists, this might not be acceptable but it certainly keeps the tubes cooler and the noise is not appreciably worse than the originals that were in my 20V-3. They can be bought from Valley Surplus. Their E Mail is [EMAIL PROTECTED] attn Michael. No guarantees but I got mine for $34 for the first one and $28 for the second, including 2 separate UPS Ground shipments! Anyone interested in seeing them mounted, I can send you a picture. 73 Bob W6TR
Re: [AMRadio] Initial settings 20V-3
I tried grid dipping the tank circuit without finding any dip even remotely close to 75M. I never have any luck with that thing. I tried putting a 2400 ohm resistor across the final plates to ground to simulate plate load impedance and that gave me resonance somewhere near 3200kcs using an Autek RF Analyst. I set the C1, C2 to what they should be (125pf & 615pf), checked the 2 L's and they measured 18uH & 5.5uH, just like Bill's book says they should be. Enough of this predicting stuff. I put the power cutback at low power and fired her up. Got 1000V on the plates and 400ma. No RF out at all and no dip anywhere. Tried it again with the power cutback set to "medium" and now I get 2000V at 800ma, still no dip, no RF. The R197 in the Plate voltage circuit, which is supposed to 1K ohms I notice has been changed to 2K back in 1971. I figure that is the reason why the volts are measuring low. At this point I'm getting tired of this so I turned it off to play with some more tomorrow. Any suggestions? Remember that you have to readjust the tank circuit by repositioning the coil taps. When I converted mine to 160 meters, I had to change the taps on both the loading and input coils. It is not a matter of simply adjusting the tuning and loading variable caps. They are about 1-1/2" tall and have a screw-in base, kinda like the old Xmas tree lights but these run on 230vac. According to my 20V-3 manual, they have a GE part number 10S6/10-250, C-7A filament, S-6 bulb. Why not just use a coax Tee and dump half of the output power of the Ranger into a 50 ohm dummy load and the other half into the amp? Bob
Re: [AMRadio] VFO for 20V-3
When I got my 20V-3 the coil sets had already been modified for 75M by WA5MOE. He followed the directions in the conversion manual "published" by Bill Carns, N7OTQ. I have the manual and it says to remove the existing windings and replace with 22 turns of #24 silk covered coil wire. I don't think that silk covering is necessary. Plain old Formvar coated solid copper wire is fine. Do you have Bill's manual? I think he would send you one if you asked. Tnx for your input on the VFO. Will these same coils resonate on 160 meters. I finally, after much trial and error, got the buffer and driver coils to work on 160 meters. I had to remove wire from the coils. For a PTO,. I would recommend inserting it into the plate of the oscillator tube through a capacitor. You would pull out the oscillator tube, of course. Perhaps, a Heathkit VFO - being more common - would work. [AMRadio] BAMA Files
What do I need to do to be able to print manuals on the BAMA website? Do I need Netscape? Also, I am looking for a 575A HV Rectifier or the solid state plug-in diodes. Anyone have some to sell? I am in the process of converting a Collins 20V-3 for 75M. I was reading some of the "AM Window" discussions with a chuckle. Don't you realize that the biggest signal gets the frequency regardless of emission type. If a SSB station jumps on to an AM QSO, just turn off the AM rig and reach over and turn on that big linear and tell them to move. It doesn't do any good to argue with them on AM cuz they probably don't know how to switch their rice box to that mode. I'll give y'all a demo one of these evenings. Bob W6TR
