Hello Bernie I am in NJ .. I commute to Ohio, Several Times a year for work. I do souund for a Smooth Jazz Group Based in Columbus. Where are you located? We are cleaning House. just sold 2 5Kw Collins transmitter, a 5Kw nautel and a 10kw Omnitronix... Not sure If we sold the 5 kw Contenential or the Gates MW5 I may also have a solidstate Harris SX5 for sale( It is complete but needs work.) It has a Low drive status. Im Pulling my hair out trying to get it running. Going to replace it with a New BE-AM5. wrong Even If a police officer is not on Duty. They are still On Call 24/7 and Hold Peace officer status. In most states they still Hold POLICE OFFICER Status 24/7..They can only act as Leaison between Amateur stations and the communications of a civil Emergency. Even If they hold an amateur license. They cannot communicate as a ham in a drill or Net They can Be at the control point, and advise the operators. My local police Department Built a New OEM. they got FEMA funding and Purchased alot of Amateur radio Gear , and installed it.. However There is not One single police Officer that is a licensed Amateur to use it. During a tour of the facility I asked If there were any Hams in the PD or OEM to operate the Gear. The Police chief and the Head of the PD Communications Claim I Quote. WE are Police Officers and Office Of emergency management, and In an Emergency. We dont need to Be licensed to use this equipment. This was 7 years ago. To this day there is still no hams in the PD or OEM But they still insist they can use the gear during an Emergency. BTW I own and Trustee the County OEM Repeaters on 2,220,440 and 6 meters They tried to Pull a simulated Emergency drill One night on My 440 machine with HT's they gave out to Patrol officers. and wanted To Press Charges against me For interfering with their drill when I shut down the Repeater. That may be the Difference.. its a CLUB Station with a License and a TRUSTEE.. It is the responsibility for the Trustee to be the Control operator and should be on location( notice I did not say in the Room with the gear But Must be ONSITE) an example would Be a club operating Field day. The Trustee of the Club call is responsible. But usually if there is a Club member who is an extra and they are operating in the Extra band. would then be the Control operator On site. These days my tower climber uses a 6 foot fiberglass ladder to Enter onto a tower leg. since most of the stations I maintain are diretional. We usually reduce power and switch to Non-D mode so he can Climb safely. When designing a buildout of a directional we try to incorporate at least 2 non-D towers. so that if one NON-D tower needs work. We can switch to the Other. It goes without saying. If a climber is up in the air Power must be reduced. no Questions asked Even when callers complain they cannot hear the station drives the station owners crazy. But safety comes first. Jim You only need 50 feet to make a unipole on that Tower.It can Be 1 wire , 2 wire or 3 wires .up to 6 wires running down from the 50 foot point. use the fence as your Ground radials. your HAM. become creative. Ive Done it. It works. heck For a while I even used a glass Coke Bottle as an insulator on the Bottom of My 40 foot Flagpole in front of the house and loaded that up on 160 Meters. a length of thin wire and a Cluster of Helium Balloons. Jim you only need 50 feet of verticle space. why not just build yourself a Folded Unipole antenna if you Dont know how. Ask. its really easy. Just Run 3 lengths of #12 wire or if you have it #6 wire. short them up at around the 50 foot point and use 1 PVC Tubing as Insulators with clamps Down the side of the Tower. at the bottom Each wire is isolated with PVC from the Tower. BTW Each wire should be about 12 or more off the tower. then Tie all 3 wires together with a ring of #12 and take that as the Lead to the antenna tuner. Run at Least 4 ground radials 50 feet long If you can get the space make them 120 feet... and you will have a Killer 160 antenna. if not make an inverted L Run a wire thats 130 feet long. as far vertically as you can then run the rest out horizontally... again you need at least 4 ground radials the unipole is what we use for Broadcast stations when we are tight for height or space on a grounded Tower. I have 2 RCA rigs. a BTA 500R and a BTA 1R1 Neither Rig worked well On 75 meters. so I put them on 160. The very first thing I would Do after determining If the Rig works on its origonal frequency. Hello John To start with Ill tell you a little about me. I am a broadcast Engineer and maintain Mostly AM stations. Actually the Company I work for has 55 AM stations. I also work for a consultant as a field Engineer.and have retuned many rigs to new frequencies. The Problem I found with the RCA is the output Network. I for one like to keep the Broadcast Rigs as close to origonal as possible. For 160 Meters with the RCA BTA series. all you really need to do is remove one Cap and then change the Taps on the Coils. no other mods are needed. However to move the Rig to 75 meters. it can Be done but you have to Build an entirly New output network. I am not saying It cannot Be Done. I feel the Rig has more Value if kept close to Factory origonal. The guy who had My BTA 500r before me attempted to do just as the above. He rebuilt the output network I checked his work. seemed ok,but the rig ran into oscilations and Eventually smoked.. I bought the transmitter and rebuilt the origonal network fixed a few smoked Items.replaced all the caps and resistors in the oscilator board. Tuned the ouput with the Slider can Cap in the Coil the RCA stock tuning to Center. to 1.885 Turned on the AC and the rig came back to life. Hi Rick No matter what I tried to Fix what was done to this transmitter. It would Put out Spurs all over the place. Yes It got to 75 meters...looking at the spectrum analyzer It was all over the place. these spurs were causing High currents and arcing. in the output Network. self oscillations the transmitter was what I call a Runaway. you Could pull out the crystal and it would still deliver full output Not a Good sign.. thats when I decided to Build the output network back to the RCA design. and try 160 meters.. it worked first shot. Clean spectral. If you like to Tinker with High voltages and networks. and not worried about Blowing out coils. Cool Go for it. I would recommend you put a spectrum analyzer on it when your Done. best to cover your butt.. and If you Do get a clean Output on 75 meters. Let me know Ill try it on another Rig I just picked up.. I am confused by the Photos Besides broadcast/ audio Engineer I am an IBEW electrician. the thing that confuses Me..where is the Ethernet port and or Fiber connection to feed this unit with Data? It has to be connected to the Network somehow.. There is one Rohn 25TG tower section sitll available. If not purchased soon, a local ham may use it on his tower by burying the bottom of the base section in concrete, conventional ham radio style. There were originally three others, but they have already been sold, and may have met similar fate. The 25TG consists of a normal 25G section but the bottom couple of feet of the tower legs are bent inwards to a taper, like the point on a pencil, and welded onto a 5/8 thick round steel plate approximately 10 in diameter. The plate has 3 holes for bolting onto the base insulator. The tapered part of the tower legs is reinforced with solid steel sheet metal instead of the normal zig-zag steel rods. One of the insulators described above was used with this tower section. There are about 60 rigid fibreglas insulators designed to attach the guy wires to the tower, with a 10,000 lbs breaking-strength rating stamped on each. This provides a long insulative path between the metallic guy wire and the vertical radiator. They are designed to also serve as torque arms for the guy wires, to reduce the possiblity that the tower might rotate during a severe storm. There are hundreds of #502 johhnyball strain insulators taken from the the guy wires. The vendor said they were attached using u-bolt cable clamps, and that the guy wires were hurriedly cut apart using a bolt-cuttor, with the wire-ends and clamps still attached to many of the insulators. An AM broadcast station used this material in a four-tower directional array, but discontinued their nighttime directional service because it was a money loser, so they gave the towers and hardware to the local ham club in exchange for taking them down. The array was originally built iabout 1980, so the stuff is relatively new as used disassembled tower material usually goes. Members of the club divided up the 25G tower sections, but had no use for the insulator hardware, and no-one seems interested in using the remaining 25TG section to build a base insulated tower. Hey Dino Just keep in Mind that this transmitter will only work On 160 Meters ok... I have the smaller Version Of the BTA-1R1, the BTA-500R. 500 watts instead of 1 kw.
