Maybe it is none of the above and I should just go ahead and plate moulate

I plan on using a D104 mike, and have a National 300 for a recevier.

I also had good results using a white lacquer stick on a National receiver
as well as the panel and knobs of a 1924 Freed-Eismann receiver. The red
lacquer stick is a perfect match for the line on Hallicrafter knobs such as
the SX-99.

I did this recently with a national receiver that I repainted. A white
lacquer stick will do a good job filling in the depression. I used artist's
paint with no thinner and a small brush to dab it into the recessed area. I
wiped it off with a dry paper towel. You will not get all of it off, but
after it dries, you can use a polishing compound, very fine sand paper or
steel wool to remove the very small amount of excess. Then car wax to polish
the entire panel.

Since your panel is painted this might not be good info, but on anodized
panels you wipe or brush some fill paint (white enamel maybe?) over the
engraved nomenclature and wipe off the excess with a rag dampened with the
proper solvent for the paint you're using. I have seen engraving / machine
shop people use a tooth pick to dab paint into engraved letters. When wiping
off the excess it might help to use a rag that's stretched over a flat piece
of plastic or wood so that your fingers aren't actually pushing the cleaning
rag down into the letters / numbers and removing paint you want to remain in
place. If you've painted the panel with enamel, I guess you could fill the
nomenclature with Latex paint and use a rag dampened with water which
shouldn't hurt the panel's finish. Bill AD5OL

Re: [AMRadio] 2m AM

2009-07-29 Thread Ken Zuercher

To All
Back in the early 80s, most of us Broadcast Engineers here in Toledo were hams
(those of us left still are). We started an informal Out to lunch club. We
all bought Heath Twoers and put them on the air. We would meet semi regularly
but it slowed down. We had on stipulation. One could spend no more than $20 on
the whole setup! most uf us found Twoers cheap as no one wanted them then
(probably still don't). The antennas were wire and wood beams or if you had a
Ringo Ranger up it was OK. One of us even found an unbuilt kit and finished it.
His worked better than mine as I only could get about a quarter watt out. We
were spread out with a radius of about 20 miles. Reception was generally OK but
we eventually lost interest or some of us moved away. I still have the Twoer.
Does anyone ever use these in other parts of the country?

The most popular spot for AM
operation on 2m is 144.450 MHz in the USA.

Part of the reason for this is the availability of
 crystal;s on and around 8025
 kHz.

Most hams who operated 2m AM for any length of time
 particuarly
in the heyday of AM would possess a number of crystals
 ranging
from just above 8000 kHz to about 8050 kHz.

I have a bunch of old ham radios I'm trying to sell. This is some of it,
but there's a lot more. I was a ham since the early 1970's but have been
 off
the air for 9 years. I also inherited all my brother's radios when he died
about 8 years ago. Everything has been sitting taking up most of the room
in my basement and attic for years and its time to clear it out!

Here is a preliminary list of stuff, contact me with your wants and I'll
figure out a price. I graded them on an approx 1-5 scale as to appearance,
 5
being highest. Everything has been sitting for at least 9 years. I also
have misc manuals and related items, please inquire.

the 6BG7 tube. What I could use is a good copy of a schematic for my

but not sure if this is the correct one.

Any body got one? I will pay costs.

I have an SX-24 that I restored that is OK but the S meter circuit is kinda
flaky being tough to zero.
Sensitivity on 20 15 and 10 is very marginal and the IF really needs to be
carefully aligned to the crystal that is in the unit, it usually has drifted
off.

A good AM receiver, not a great one for CW, but very worth your time.

turns it over to another. But the real problem is that this frequency
scattering is bound to be generating unnecessary hostility from the SSB
DX'ers, and will likely to result in deliberate QRM and other hostile
 actions against the AM'ers

When has that ever bothered you before, Don? To borrow your own words
on such matters, 'strap and ignore', 'turn up the wick' etc. I'd agree
with you if folks were scattered out over 4-5 kcs or more, but 1-2
seems m ore related to sync detectors not locking up than to offending
any SSB ops. After all, it's been one of the ways to discourage
anti-AM SSB types from crowding in close to a QSO in progress.

I have ALWAYS, ever since the early 60's, advocated operating zero-beat with

the other station whenever possible. One exception might be when two or
more stations are xtal controlled, and some of the older VFOs do drift. But

failure to zero-beat when it is easily possible and convenient is just plain

sloppy operating.

This is an example of the difference between necessary bandwidth and
occupied bandwidth. If you are running audio out to 5 kHz, 10 kHz is the
NECESSARY bandwidth of the signal. But if two stations in the QSO are 3 kHz

apart, then the OCCUPIED bandwidth of the QSO becomes 13 kHz. There is no
rule that says all stations in a QSO have to be on the same frequency.
Hell, DX'ers routinely take up two whole SSB communications channels for one

QSO by working split frequency (and these are often the very same
self-righteous kilocycle kops who gripe the loudest about all that
bandwidth that AM and ESSB signals take up). Nevertheless, conspicuous
sloppiness about zero-beating just unnecessarily gives the slopbucketeer
lunatic fringe more ammunition to use against AM.

Another often-overlooked advantage of carefully zero-beating (whenever
practicable) is that a breaking station attempting to enter into the QSO
is less disruptive. If you can hear his audio underneath the transmitting
station, and at most, the puttering sound of a nearly zero-beat carrier,
this is far less disruptive to the conversation, than a loud 1-2 kHz squeal
of an off-frequency carrier, which garbles up the sidebands of both signals.

You often miss what the transmitting station was saying, while at the same
time, missing the callsign of the breaking station. It is not unusual that
breakers into a QSO are ignored for this very reason.

But older transmitters with drifty VFO's are not the only problem. Some of
the worst offenders are using modern transceivers on AM. Even if the audio
level and carrier level are adjusted properly, so that a good, undistorted,
plate-modulated quality AM signal is generated, many transceivers lack any
kind of frequency spotting function. In AM mode the received signal is
clearly audible as long as it lies within the transceiver's passband. So it
is easy to tune in the signal on the receiver and then transmit, and end up
with a carrier 1.5 kHz or more off frequency. If everyone is using a wide
bandpass at the receiver and there is little congestion on nearby
frequencies, this is no big deal and no-one may even notice. But if the
band is crowded and many stations in the QSO are operating with the receiver

in narrow bandpass, with heavy QRM off to both sides, some people in the QSO

may miss the call entirely.

I have seen modifications to transceivers that allow a spotting function for

zero-beating purposes. Depending on the circuit design, this may be very
easy with minimal alteration of the circuitry, while on others it simply
isn't practical. Lacking a spotting function, the easiest method would be
to put the rig in SSB/CW mode and zero-beat the AM carrier, then switch back

to AM. But on some rigs, this automatically produces a frequency error,
because there is a built-in frequency offset when switching between modes.
In that case, you have to note the digital display frequency, and retune
back to that frequency in AM mode. Even then, there may also be an offset
in the digital display reading that must be taken into account. It is a
matter of figuring out exactly what works

station, and at most, the puttering sound of a nearly zero-beat carrier,
this is far less disruptive to the conversation, than a loud 1-2 kHz squeal
of an off-frequency carrier, which garbles up the sidebands of both signals.

Lacking a spotting function, the easiest

I have a manual for what I believe is the first commercially available Theremin

110,150,170 and I bought a SX-99 real cheap from a local Ham I hope to check
 it out soon.

It really depends what you want out of it for performance. Nice audio,
excellent selectivity, bullet-proof front end? Probably the best
overall radio would be the R-390A which can be had for the top end of
your price range if you shop outside ebay and don't mind doing some
work to bring it up to spec. Some of the earlier Hallicrafters rigs
offer nice push-pull audio output if you're seeking nice, full audio.
Early Hammarlund Super Pros and some Nationals fall into the category
too and can be found in the $200-$300 range. And as Ed said, the Drake
gear is still some of the best gear value for performance out there.

But really, pretty much any receiver with AM will work since the
signal tends to be broad enough that drift isn't a big issue. It
depends more on what you want for features and performance, size,
weight, etc. The cheaper/low end sets just tend to be a bit
 morechallenging (annoying?) to use.

Re: [AMRadio] 160 meter antenna

2009-01-12 Thread Ken Zuercher
I would bet that the Skirt type antenna that you describe is actually a
detuning system on a cellphone tower that is within two miles of a Directional
AM Broadcast array. If the Cell tower is within the two mile range, the company
who owns it must have a partial proof of performance done on the AM directional
array before and after the tower is built. If it is shown to distort the
pattern, then the detuning network that you see is added and tuned to make the
cell tower invisible electrically to the AM array at the broadcast frequency.
It actually is an untenna I guess.

This is a skirt type antenna it's a fairly common
trick used at some AM b'cast sites. This way
the tower can be grounded rather than sitting on a base

  Hi Robert,
We have several of those wireless towers and monopoles
around here, as well Those side wires are safety cables
that climbers can clip on to with
fall-arresting lanyards and harnesses, they are not
 radiators.
Anyway, the folded unipole is a worthwhile antenna to
 try. I have had excellent
results with an inverted L running up the side of my
 80' tower and the
horizontal portion sloping out to a tree.
The L' perhaps looks more like a
vee with one short leg. Total length is about 135 ft.
  I use a coil and
capacitor parallel network at the base of the tower
 feeding the end of the
antenna wire then coax back to the shack. As always,
 a good radial system
  really helps.

Jim you only need 50 feet of verticle space.
why not just build yourself a Folded Unipole
antenna if you Dont know how.
Ask. its really easy. Just Run 3 lengths of #12 wire
or if you have it #6 wire.
short them up at around the 50 foot point and use
 1 PVC
Tubing as Insulators with clamps Down the side of
 the Tower.
at the bottom Each wire is isolated with PVC from
 the Tower.
BTW Each wire should be about 12 or more
off the tower. then Tie all 3 wires
together with a ring of #12 and take that as the Lead
 to the antenna tuner. Run
at Least 4 ground radials 50 feet long If you can get
the space make them 120 feet...
and you will have a Killer 160 antenna. if not
make an inverted L Run a wire
thats 130 feet long. as far vertically as
you can then run the rest out horizontally...
again you need at least 4 ground
radials the unipole is what we use for
Broadcast stations when we are tight for height
or space on a grounded Tower.

what the transmitter.
Truer words have never been spoken!
My lot is 48X108ft. I do have a Hygain vertical and a
MiniQuad that may get put back into service. I used to
run QRP with the vertical on 80-10 meters with a Heath
HW-8. I worked all over when conditions were fair to
better. I also used the 75 meter half sloper to check
in toa cw net every day. They could hear me so I guess
it was oK. I'm negotiating with a friend here in
Toledo to take custody of his DX-100. That should help
on 75 AM. Have some splainin to do Lucy about the
size of the stuff I am bringing into the house. Thanks
for the advice and good conversation. Hope to meet you

 Hi Ken,

How much space do you have? If your tower is 50-60
 ft. could you
possibly install an Inverted L? Say 55 ft vertical
 (the more the
better) with the rest horizontal out to about
 160-170 ft and the end
as high as possible. Feed that with 50 ohm coax and
 use a series
cap in the center of 100-300 pico farads. If you
 will do that, you
will be able to tune the thing on all bands with a
 good tuner at the
transmitter. The downside is that it will be a
 better antenna for
long distant communications and not as good for
 distances out to 500
miles. I have 44 ft. vertical and the rest
 horizontal and it works
on 160 both close in and at a distance (as many
 radials as you can
 put in).

On 75 meters, however it is distance dependent.
 Close in stations
are weak, stations out over 500 miles do well. As
 for power, the DX
40 will have trouble on 160 and 75 on AM in the
 evening. However on
40 and above you will make adequate contacts. On CW
 you will do
 fine on 75-10 and ok on 160. I have a 40/75 meter
 dipole (the poles
support the ends as high as the center), the
 inverted L plus a 5
band beam for the upper bands. I find the L works
 fine on the upper
 bands.

For transmitters I use a BW 5100B for SSB, a BW
 5100 , Globe
Champion 300A and a Globe King 500A. On the upper
 bands, power is
not that important, but on 75, especially at night,
 it is. CW is
much more forgiving than AM so take that into
 consideration. The
more work you put into the antenna the better the
 payoff no matter
 what the transmitter.

RE: [AMRadio] 6V6 vs. 6L6

2008-02-13 Thread Ken Zuercher
Not to beat a dead horse, but a 6v6 used for audio can
be replaced by a 6L6. The 6L6 has a lower plate
resistance so an output transformer for a pair of 6V6s
will support a pair of 6L6s as the 6V6 plate
resistance is about 10K per pair where the 6L6 is
about 5K per pair. I have put 6L6s in many Fender
guitar amps to replace the 6V6s until I could get new
tubes. No problem at all. They do sound different
however. (I hope I described this right)

   Hello,

Actually, the term elmer is something
  relatively new, and only recently
has it come into any kind of common use. It
 was
  first used in a March
1971 QST article by Dave Newkirk:

I have been licensed since 1959, first becoming

1953. I was very active in ham radio throughout
  the 1970's and 80's, but
NEVER heard the term elmer until about 1980.
 It
  is at best a
   johnny-come-lately part of our history,
 associated
  with the brief influx

 the
  CB boom that began in
   the mid-70's.

What is the earliest verifiable reference anyone
  can find to the term,
such as use or mention of it in an amateur radio

Newkirk article) or a documented speech at a
 major
  ham radio event?

Re: [AMRadio] 6CA7/EL34 replacements

2007-12-08 Thread Ken Zuercher
I've had good luck with J J (tesla) tubes for output
tubes, EL34 and EL84. I've had good luck with Sovtek
preamp 12AX7s but not 6L6s. I use NOS that I have
collected from various sources, especially hamfests.
The Electro Harmonix 6L6s seem to be fine, I think
that they are picked out Sovteks and the Groove Tubes
6L6s though expensive work well. I think that they are
tested Sino or that they are making their own tubes
now.
There are new Gold Lion and Mullards now as someone is
using their designs or even the original tooling. Some
are reasonable in cost, some are only for audiofools
with more money than sense. The Mullards are supposed
to be good and not overpriced. i haven't tried them as
I have some NOS units at home. Output tubes last for a
few years with regular use, preamp tubes last me for
many (10+) years with regular use.

As people have stated, it's a combination of both.
 People cared more about
their work back then and probably took better care
 in how they handled
stuff. There was less pressure to just get the
 stuff outta here than now
 I'm sure.

Secondly it does not matter whether so much whether
 you use a particular
material or not, it's HOW the materials are put
 together that matter.
Someone in a reply said it doesn't matter how it's
 packed if it gets dropped
six feet. I think you are stating my second point
 from a different angle. I
wouldn't send a Valiant out my door unless I felt
 confident... yes,
confident that it could withstand a six foot drop.
 Probably an eight foot
drop. That's not unusual and std packing procedure
 for a business. It's not
hard to do but it takes a little work and more than
 that it takes thought on
how it should be boxed. I've sent hundreds of items
 around the world.
Fragile glass items. Heavy radios. I never had one
 damaged in transit. ALl
of those packages were expected to withstand at
 least a six foot drop.

As an example, here is what I would do with a
 small-medium sized
 transmitter:

 1. Remove the tubes. They get individually wrapped
 in bubble-wrap and
shipped separately. Any other loose pieces get sent
 separately in another
box. If you want you can in some case wrap that
stuff up and put it inside
but if you want to be sure, pack it separate.

 2. Depending on the tranmitter, it's value, etc I
 might need to make a
 wooden support for the transformers.

 3. Wrap this up in both directions with bubble wrap.
 The one with the bigger
bubbles, not the small-bubble kind. Tape it good.
There should be at least a
couple of inches of bubblewrap on every surface.

 4. Using bubblewrap or high-density foam fit this
assembly into a box. Not a
bad idea to put it into a heavy garbage bag and tape
 before it goes in the
 box.

 5. Tape this box up. Tape it up GOOD. If heavy use
 strapping tape as I
describe below. Now this is where many people would
 stop. It looks like it's
ready to go, right? Well many people would ship this
 out but it's not ready.

 6. Get ANOTHER, larger box. ALlow for 3-4 inches in
 every direction. In
between the two boxes you need some cushion. I
 pesonally like peanuts but if
you use them they must be packed DENSELY. You want
the inner box to be able
to move a bit, but not much. Pack the peanuts in
 there tight. Tape this box
up tight. Then get your strapping tape and wrap two
 double bands of that in
each direction, each band about 25% of the way in
from the edge of the box.
If the box is long then I'd add two more bands in
 that direction. The
strapping tape will prevent the box from bursting
should it be dropped on a
corner for instance. It's very strong stuff.

 You're done.

Now if the transmitter is really large, or extra
 heavy (say 80 or 100lbs)
then you need to go to the next level and crate it.
 Basically you follow the
steps above and then put that assembly into a box
 that is made of plywood
with reinforced corners, etc. Making a suitable
 crate is somewhat of an
art... a story for another day.

If you follow those steps listed above you will be
 able to drop that
transmitter 6-8 feet without any damage to the box
 or the transmitter. It
will hit with a funny dull sounds and sort of bounce
 (which is what you
want, thats' the energy being absorbed and deflected
 not transferred to the
 transmitter).

 73,

 Mark W1EOF

Could someone explain to me how radios were
 shipped back in the
  50's so that
they arrived at the dealers with no apparent
 damage. I wonder what the
  original packing was back then?

Re: [AMRadio] FCC and AM on the BC band

2006-02-08 Thread Ken Zuercher
Sorry I just got around to reading this for a reply.
The prime cause of wierdness in programming and
quality is that there is rarely anyone minding the
store at Commercial stations, especially AM. The
stations are being run by computers, Usually windows
machines that are riddled with bugs. The engineers are
like me, a contractor that isn't on staff and only
called in ocassionally. Thing happen to the systems
and you get dead air, multiple sources on the air, etc.
I also think that political commentary doesn't belong
on this or any other ham radio list. Considering that
90% of the AM talkers are of the right wing variety,
comments about Air America should be best kept to one
self. Not all of us think alike and that's a very good
thing. If we did, we all would have only rice box
rigs.
Ken KC8QO

--- VJB [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

The FCC is allowing the quality of AM signals to
deteriorate, but it's been over a very long period
 of
 time.

First there was the neglect of receiver standards
which could have forced car radio and home tuner
manufactuers to comply with minimum specs on
selectivity and audio fidelity. Many industry
observers feel this could have been established
 during
 the AM Stereo controversy.

Then, after failing to do that, the FCC allowed the
industry to propose and implement a 9 kHz
 transmitted
bandwidth standard, ostensibly to minimize adjacent
 channel interference.

In the time since digital decoding and encoding
 became
a successor to the (sometimes) equalized metallic
 pair
between studio and transmitter, there has not been
enough industry interest at making sure digital
artifacts are held to a minimum

Lately, the industry jumped on the digital
 bandwagon
that rolled through television then FM, to
 voluntarily
try to implement In-Band, On-Channel digital service
 on contemporary AM frequencies.

The side effects of this system spread interference
well past 15 to 20 Kc from center frequency, as a
function of trying to match (not beat) the kind of
analog audio quality our parents remember when they
were tuned to AM on the old wooden floor console
 that
served as the Home Entertainment Center in those
 pre-TV days.

RE: [AMRadio] AM Power Level

2003-05-20 Thread Ken Zuercher
Joe,
When you're aligning your SX-117, check the coupling
caps. I had a Hammarlund HQ-110 from the 60's that
needed some coupling caps to bring the sensitivity
back. Have fun!

Thanks all for your help. There are far more

be some time yet till I'm ready to
get on the air in AM mode. Besides the class-E
project, I need to give my
Hallicrafters SX-117 receiver an alignment. It's
 become somewhat deaf over the
years. Otherwise, I do not currently have another
HF receiver suitable for AM. My
older Kenwood transceiver is good for CW and SSB
 only.

 Thanks for the help!

Re: [AMRadio] Broadcast Transmitters

2003-04-22 Thread Ken Zuercher
Dave,
I haven't had the fun of working with Western Electric
Transmitters, It would probably be the only size that
would fit in my house and not cause a divorce. The
350B tubes are being used by the hi-Fi audio bunch. I
think one of the tube companies are making them again.
I did recently restore the Collins 20-V and had it on
the air in Ann Arbor,MI. The main is a Continental
Power Rock 1 KW and needed some parts. The Collins has
some supporters in the Ham community. I have a friend
who is a broadcast engineer in Toledo who took one out
of service and plans on putting it on 75 meters. I'd
love to take it home. It's construction is a work of
art. I'm not looking forward to taking it out of
service any time soon as it is history and sounds very
good on the air. We run music on it. It is only 500
Watts and is the same cabinet etc as the 1 KW version
so it is indeed a beast.
Let me know how the Western Electric comes out as I'd
love to hear it on the air. I will try to get on the
15 meter AM net soon. My AM rig is a Heathkit DX-40 so
there is not a lot of power. It should be audible on
15 however.

Ken, I am presently restoring a Western Electric 250

they are rather rare. This was a back up
 transmitter for a local radio
station and was first placed in operation in 1947.

I would think that anything made by Western Electric
 would be a collector's
item. The tubes in this unit, particularly the 350B
 audio tubes bring big
 bucks.

 Thank you.

I presently have an AM broadcast site with both
 the
Continental and the Gates in service. They both
 work
fine but I'd take the Continental first. Better
 audio
because of the PWM modulation. 3-500Z tubes are
getting to be a problem for continuous service due
 to
Eimac no longer making them. I have had good
 results
from the Taylor and the RFParts tubes (and they
 are
very reasonable priced.)Wish I had space for one
 of
these but I'd probably need to replace my wife at
 that
  point.

   The only modification is
the engineer put a window in the front panel to

Coils are clean like new as are all other
 parts.
   Sure you don't want it?

Brett,
This is the first I've heard about your simple
superhet. Is ther more info that you'd be willing to
fill me (us) in about it? I need a project for this
summer. I have been considering a Regenerative tube
receiver, the superhet would be better of
course.Thanks in advance.

 Ron,
 I have an r390A.
Very good receiver, its a bit ugly compared to some
 others,
 but a very good design.
It needs the audio taken off the diode load in the
 back, and put
into a nice audio amp and speaker to be hi fi, as do
 most receivers.

Used to be my favorite one to use while I was on the
 air, as its
accurate, stable, reliable, has a scope output, nice
 mechanical
 filters, etc.

I have since found out its quite noisy though, and
 now I notice
I have a bad cap crackling someplace in the audio
 background.

Its not a receiver you want if you jump around a
 lot, way too much
cranking of knobs, but if you stick around one band,
 its great.

The gears and alignment are not bad, the alignment
 is actually
easy, the pain is when you break a gear clamp buried
 under
 a lot of other gears.
Then, its a bit of like working on a transmission.

My simple home brew superhetrodine blows the r390
 away, better
fidelity, much lower noise level, better AM filter
 bandwith,
better frequency accuricy, easier to jump between
 160, 80 and 40 meters.

The r390 would be better than ANY stock rice box
 receiver though...

  Hi again... I have a chance to buy a R 390A. All
 those
gears, etc. look imposing. It is really such a
 great radio?

[AMRadio] Central Electronics 10A Exciter found

2002-11-16 Thread Ken Zuercher
Hello all,
Does anyone have any quick info on a Central
Electronics 10A Exciter in very good condition. I
found it at a local electronics store and am
considering purchasing it. It has all of the parts
including some plug in coils but I didn't see a
manual.
I have heard about the 20A but not a 10A.
It has a three position switch for SB1,SB2, AM.
They have it for what seems a reasonable price from a
silent key.
I am interested in it's AM capability of course.

[AMRadio] RE: AM radio (off subject)

2002-07-23 Thread Ken Potter
Hi Steve,
You did get it. We are all in the un-organized militia
(We the People). Regulated as used in the Second
Amendment means trained and proficient in the use of
arms. The Bill of Rights is for individuals, not the
government. Eventually, this will be the unintended
consequence of our elected officials failing to uphold
the oath that they all took, to protect and defend the
Constitution of the United States of America. Their
failure to uphold their oath, is what is causing the
government to continue on its course of tyranny.

For those who don't get it, this is the reason for
the
second amendment.

Hi Ken,
I don't get it. I thought the 2nd Amendment was
to provide for a
militia.
