Re: [AMRadio] transformer rattle - kill or cure?

2009-12-23 Thread Mel Farrer
Hi, I used to rebuild motors and transformers and the older ones never seemed
to keep the laminations tight or bonded.  We used to take older ones and put
them in an oven for a couple of hours at 150 or so degrees.  Then put them
submerged in a tank of thinned varnish for about 10 minutes.  Pull them out and
wipe off the excess varnish and cool overnight.  Heating the core seems to
invite the thinned varnish to penetrate deeper into the laminations.  This
always kept the cores quiet.  Its a little messy, but works.  Good Luck.

Max - Is this your BC-610E?

If it is, I believe they use open frame transformers.  They are also
difficult to get to.

In that instance, I'd try to look at the "wedges" between the bobbin and
the laminations.  Try to tighten them a hair.

2009-12-23 Thread AirRadio
Bob,
No this is in a Drake R-4c, that is why it is a tad irritating, if it was in
the '610 it would probably not notice so much, also I have spares for all of
them. I have removed it and am going to leave it in a pot of varnish
overnight, better not put it in the oven the Turkey might taste a bit odd on
the 25th ;-) it will either make no difference or will sort it, all the
laminations look tight and it is already varnished maybe there is a small
looseness somewhere however the bobbin looks tight enough. it is 30 years
old though maybe something has moved over time.

Forgot to mention, if you do set the transformer on rubber feet be sure
to electrically ground the frame to the chassis to maintain the
integrity of the safety ground just in case of a winding fault.

You might remove one of the end bells and try inserting something
between the bobbin and the laminations at the end. Maybe that is a mite
loose.

Re: [AMRadio] transformer rattle - kill or cure?

2009-12-23 Thread Stevan A. White
As a broadcast engineer I have seen (or heard) transformers rattle as
you've described. My suggestion would be to let it be, especially if it
stops after a while. It sounds to me like it rattles when it's cold and
stops after it warms up. Does the noise gradually subside or just quit
abruptly? It is annoying to listen to the laminations rattle but it
would be even more annoying to try to "fix" one problem and create
another. Some transformer windings are spaced apart and spacers may
loosen some when they're cool and "tighten up" after they warm up. I
used to have one that did that and it really bothered me until I talked
to the factory guy and he explained what was happening. Even worse than
transformer laminations rattling is hearing a bank of SCRs grunting and
groaning. (I'll bet some on this list even know which line of
transmitters I'm talking about.) Happy Holidays to all!

Sounds like it abates once things settle in thermally. The simple
approach I'd try first Max is to check the tension on any securing
bolts through the transformer laminations or chassis. Sometimes that
takes care of it. Other methods include removing the transformer and
re-sealing the laminations it in hot varnish, or isolating the
transformer from the chassis on rubber bushings. The latter is not a
good idea IMO due to safety concerns with internal shorts which would
otherwise become apparent when the case is grounded to the chassis.

Gary WZ1M is a member of this list and has a transformer rebuilding
business, so he can certainly provide you with some pointers. I think
Don K4KYV and a few others have successfully dealt with similar
problems with success. It might be as simple as tossing he transformer
in the oven for a while on its own if tightening the bolts doesn't
cure it.

5-25 henry swinging choke. 5 hy @ 500MA, 25 hy@ 50MA.

This is the same thing as the CG-109, except that the case style is
different.

The PA series is the original. PA stands for "Public Address". In about
1949, they changed the PA series to CG, which stands for "Commercial Grade".

A couple of decades ago, I accidently dumped a few hundred watts of RF
directly into the front-end of an SX-73, on 75m. The input coil took
the brunt of the damage.

John Mohn/W5MEU(sk) told me to come out there and get some 24ga copper
wire to re-wind that coil. Very carefully, I removed the phoenelic
board from the turret in which the coil was installed, then ever
so-much-more carefully, removed the coil from the board. There was a
spot on the coil that -wasn't- burnt, so I was able to count turns, and
re-wind the coil. Luckily, I was working at Southwest Research
Institute at the time, and was able to utilize a small-wattage iron,
some organic stripper and a magnifying glass to re-solder the connections.

Re: [AMRadio] Transformer Lead Dress Dave

2007-12-16 Thread Mike Sawyer
They do make a shrink tubing with a type of sealant inside. We used to use
these when I worked at Babcock & Wilcox. They are somewhat stiff but I think
it maintain insulation at 2KV potential.

W3SLK

That works for minor cracks and breaks in the insulation but these
leads are so brittle that replacement
is called for especially with the plate transformer at close to 2kv
RMS. Heat shrink is also not very flexable but I might use it for the
LV transformer and choke.

I'm going to be turning this VK II chassis into an externally
modulated RF deck.

Re: [AMRadio] Transformer Lead Dress Dave

2007-12-16 Thread doxemf

Re-sent
From: "David Knepper"

Try shrink tubing.

 Thanks,
Wm.

Dave,

Wanted to mention with the 75A-1, I turned it back on and tried all bands,
hearing only 2 signals on 40 and 40 meters. I don't know how many coils
there are that could be affected by the 75 meter AM zap. I really think I
should pay something for these, please. Or, I'll send you a box of my

Hello,
I just stripped out a basket case VK II transmitter for rebuilding.
Most of the transformer leads are brittle and even carefully removing
them thru the chassis hole, I can feel the rubber inner jacket breaking
up.

I would expect to replace the wires near as I can get to the windings.
The plate transformer will need good HT wire.

I have quite a bit of different sizes of silver teflon.
for most of the windings but not quite sure what to do about the HT
wires.

This is a project transmitter, not a restoration.

Suggestons? Sources of suitable wire in an affordable put up. I have
other large transformers with the same problem as well.

Re: [AMRadio] Transformer Lead Dress

2007-12-11 Thread Brett Gazdzinski
I found some silicone high voltage wire in an old
pager transmitter someone gave me.
It ran a 4-400 at 3000 volts, FM at about 70 mhz.
The silicone wire was about as thick as regular 18 gauge
stranded hookup wire, was white, and good for 10kv!

On some old iron, I cut the old wires off inside the shell,
and used heat shrink over the splice, and it works great,
and is a perminent nice looking fix.

Reply by Jim, WD5JKO:

Bill, I went through this a few years ago on a Sherwood tube type stereo
amplifier. See link below for some pictures.

http://pages.prodigy.net/jcandela/Sherwood_S8000/Transformer/

I spliced new wires onto the tinned leads, and used heatshrink for the
insulation over the joint. Then I folded the wires back and taped them over the
winding area. What started out looking like a total loss ended up good. I
skipped dipping in transformer varnish along with a vacuum chamber to suck out
the air so that the varnish would fill all the internal pores that have been
created since the old potting material had disintegrated. So far after nearly 4
years, my trusty Sherwood S800 is working fine.

Since you are not dealing with any real HV any 600V rated wire will be fine
as the actual breakdown is around 2-3 times that. They werent that fussy
back then.

USA made VOM test leads are a good source of HV wire up to 5KV or so
depending on their original use. Ive used them in many 2-3KV supplies over
the years. Old ones can also get brittle so be carefull what you get.

Teflon is good for HV BUT it is very easily nicked and damaged.

Subject: [AMRadio] Transformer Lead Dress

Hello,
I just stripped out a basket case VK II transmitter for rebuilding.
Most of the transformer leads are brittle and even carefully removing them
thru the chassis hole, I can feel the rubber inner jacket breaking up.

I would expect to replace the wires near as I can get to the windings.
The plate transformer will need good HT wire.

I have quite a bit of different sizes of silver teflon.
for most of the windings but not quite sure what to do about the HT wires.

This is a project transmitter, not a restoration.

Suggestons? Sources of suitable wire in an affordable put up. I have
other large transformers with the same problem as well.

Thanks,
Bill, KB3DKS/1

[AMRadio] Transformer Request

2007-08-08 Thread David Knepper
Looking for a steel drawn case (as used in the DX-100, etc.) that measures 2
inches by 3 inches between the two outer mounting holes. I want to mount
another transformer inside the case. Therefore, the transformer is not
important to me, just the case. Prefer three holes in each of the two
flanges or would accept a potted transformer that has threaded studs.

The original transformer was used in the Collins KWS-1 as the high voltage
rectifier filament transformer. When I purchased the unit, the transformer
was missing, unfortunately. I assume that the transformer was discarded
after it failed.

Any assistance would be appreciated

Thank you

I don't know if he baked 'em, or ust let 'em sit outside on the driveway
for a couple of days, in the typical South Texas Sun.

John/WA5BXO had a modulation transformer, and reactor soaked in Spring

everything in the worst flooding of North Houston ever recorded.

How the HELL are you? Also Greasy Seasonings there old soldier!
I feel your info will fall on deaf ears at this time of year. I am trying
to be civilized here in Buffalo, but without radios to play with "It

work, not bad really. Got all the test equipment I regularly use at
home and then some, sleeping on the sofa in Boss's office and
building stuff and repairing radios and having a ball.

Samoan weather is brutal, wind blows across the beaches if
you are lucky, and it rains when no one wants it to!

SO lets see want to drive to Virginia beach and pick something
up and hold it for me? I know I still have an Apache there but
I still LOVE you. My pickup truck is dead DEAD and I am going to
drop it at Monroe Muffler and brake to let them repair it, if they can.

I have been working on the 500KC group stuff got the transmitter,
got the receiver coming from Cleveland, everything is set up for
portable operation from the University, if it is heard then I will have
to change the address/location info on the 500KC license.

How the heck are you and I still have AIM and you are listed in there

Folks,

Most of us have power, mod, audio, and "other" transformers that have
been "due to storage requirements", exposed to humidity.

The 90 Deg C temp converts to 194 Deg F.

This would seem to be a starting point for a multiple hour bake session.

My Electric stove/oven has a 200 Deg F setting.

I plan to make some baking runs on xfmrs for periods between 2 to 4 hours.

This SHOULD take care of "simple" humidity issues.

Dealing with REAL MOISTURE issues is someplace I've been. The year was
1975. My team and I were installing a replacement 1500KW, 4160VAC, 230A
60 Hz synchronous generator.

We were located on the Island of American Samoa. The military transport
folks, for reason never determined, had left this in an unprotected wood
shipping crate. This crate sat OUTSIDE for about weeks in the summer
tropical environment AND rains.

We acquired about 12 floodlights, sockets, wiring, and plugs. We
removed the end bells and confirmed a "Depot Rebuilt" assembly that was
indeed SOAKED.

We baked it with the end bells OFF for two weeks in a water-proof
shelter. Testing was performed with first a Megger, then followed by a
"Hi-Pot". We determined that our effort was successful.

Several days later, we installed it, aligned it with the prime mover,
and then, crossing our fingers, started the generator, flashed its
field, and achieved full output voltage. We did a careful step loading
until we reached full power of 1500KW 4160 3 Phase VAC at a power factor
of 0.8.

It was run for 72 hours in that condition. It performed flawlessly.

To MY knowledge, this piece of equipment operated for at LEAST four
years without failure.

Baking works! WE just shouldn't have to go to THOSE extremes to safely
recover OUR transformers. Unless we have managed to let them get WET.

[AMRadio] Transformer catalogs

2005-12-13 Thread Edward B Richards
Hi all;

I remember seeing where someone had posted transformer specifications
somewhere on the web. I was not interested at the time so I did not save
it (mistake). I now need to identify 3 transformers and a choke. All are
about the size of a car battery and weigh about the same. Can someone
point me in the right direction? they are;

1. Super Electronic Products Corporation type 466-T-1
2. Thordarson Electric Mfg, co. CAT transformer T-15P10 or T-15P19, 900
watts.
3. Electro Engineering Works. No numbers other than numbering the
terminals; 123 on one row, 4567 on other row.
4. Above came with a matching choke by the same company no. 678-0625-00
rev F.

I need something that will produce 3 kv @ 500 ma DC.

Thank you and Merry Christmas.

Awk!! There is no "AM Window" on 15 meters. You can use the entire phone
band. Typically though, AM activity is around 21.420.

As to why it isn't used much, I suspect it's because 10M has been good. As
we head further into the sunspot doldrums, you'll probably see more activity
on 15M.

A lot of us that are 10M addicts monitor 29.0 whilst putzing in the shack.
It would probably be a good idea to set a second receiver on 21.420! I'm
not sure what the AM calling frequency is for 15 though, it might not be
21.420. Check the band plan.
