[amsat-bb] HO-68 Beacon Heard In DO33

2009-12-24 Thread B J
I listened for HO-68 for the first time last night and again during two passes
today. The S meter on my FT-817ND didn't budge but the signal was steady and
clear and I was able to copy most of the characters that were transmitted.
I'll be in CO96 tomorrow and Friday and I'll try to listen for it there as well.

I think we're going to have a lot of fun with this bird.

[amsat-bb] Stardust-NExT Flyby Of Comet Tempel 1 Successful

2011-02-14 Thread B J
The first pictures should be available later on, apparently some time around
0800 UTC.

The investigators don't know right now what was photographed, so the crater
formed from by Deep Impact in 2005 might not show up. If it does, they'll be
interested in what, if anything, changed over the years. If it doesn't, they
expect to see some new features that Deep Impact wasn't able to take pictures
of.

The website:

tracks satellites in real time and displays data such as latitude and longitude.

There's a link on the main page to a listing of amateur birds but the names
that are given are the official ones. For example, AO-51 is given as AMSAT

Over a year ago, I flew on a domestic flight to another province. I partly
disassembled my Arrow and put it into my suitcase as it was the easiest way for
me to transport it.

On the trip out, no questions. On the way back, the luggage inspector asked
what it was as it showed up on the scan. He accepted my explanation when I
told him I was a ham. Maybe he was simply curious, but I had my amateur radio

I was only 5 years old at the time and I don't remember either Shepard's or
Grissom's Mercury flights. I do recall, though, that John Glenn's mission
received a lot of publicity, even here in Canada. That might explain why
mention of Freedom 7 often results in "huh?" from people.

By the way, the flight of Freedom 7 is portrayed in both the movie "The Right
Stuff" and in the first episode of the HBO series "From The Earth To The Moon".
The air-ground traffic in the latter was taken from actual mission transcripts.

I also have a DVD copy of the NASA film "Freedom 7". It runs for about half an
hour, nearly twice as long as the flight itself. I think I'll watch it
tomorrow.

I'm not sure if this will answer your question. I've used the individual N2YO
pages to check the satellites that I'm interested in with the amateur birds
listed at:

http://n2yo.com/satellites/?c=18

Clicking on an individual link brings up a page giving the details. That page
also has a link which leads to another one which shows the real-time tracking.
It helps to know what the official name or NORAD ID is to get the right link.

I've put the links to the satellites I track in my bookmark file.

Last year, I tried using HO-68 on SSB with my FT-817ND and had mixed results.
Most of the time, other stations heard my signal but couldn't contact me
because my downlink settings were too far off frequency.

A few months ago, I bought a second-hand '847 and I've been practicing on VO-52
and AO-7 during passes which are fairly quiet and I'm less likely to interfere
with other stations.

I heard that being mentioned.

I was surprised, however, that the count resumed at T-31 seconds where it was
halted. I thought that it would be restarted at a point earlier in the
sequence, such as T-9 minutes. I don't ever recall a launch, even as far back
as Mercury, in which a countdown was stopped so close to ignition and then
continued from where it left off.

I noticed that.

It's too bad that there was no live TV transmission of the ET separation seen

I was watching the NASA JPL feed via Ustream.

I used to watch NASA TV via RealPlayer. In the past, there was the irritating
tendency for the video to freeze while the audio continued.

As I mentioned in a different post, all I saw was a view of the ET from the
orbiter right after SRB sep and as I heard that there apparently wouldn't be
any TV downlink of the ET sep, I didn't think anything was out of order.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat Heard In DO33

2011-08-04 Thread B J
I heard the CW beacon at 1217 UTC with a strong (min. S5) but noisy signal.

The FM downlink wasn't as strong as the beacon and was much noisier (possibly
from local interference), fading about once per second. However, I did hear a
child's voice giving part of the satellite's ID, but that was about it.

As I mentioned in another posting, in the NASA TV commentary, there hardly any
reference to ARISSat as having anything to do with amateur radio others than
AMSAT having contributed to its design and construction.

I noticed in the NASA TV commentary that ARISSat was constantly being referred
to as an "educational" satellite with scarcely a mention of its amateur radio
capabilities. AMSAT was named just in passing as being one of the parties
involved with its design and construction, but that was about it.

At least one other website also emphasized that ARISSat was built for
educational purposes, which disappointed me as I was always under the
impression that ARISSat was primarily an amateur radio bird.

I acquired the FM downlink signal at 0600 UTC and heard part of the

improved by 0602 with little noise, strength of at least S8, and no fading.

At 0602, the following was transmitted after the ID and greeting:

MET = 65 minutes
IHU temp. = +41 deg. C
Control panel temp. = +56 deg. C
Battery voltage = ??

The transmission appeared to stop at that point and nothing further was

I listened during part of the same pass here in DO33. Due to ARISSat's
position and my location, I wasn't able to hear more than a few seconds of
the transmission. It was up to S8 on my radio's S meter but it was noisy
for much of it.

I heard part of the children's segment followed by a few seconds of open

[amsat-bb] Antennas For AO-7 Mode A

2011-10-23 Thread B J
I'm looking for a suitable antenna that I can use to operate over AO-7 in
mode A . The main requirement that it be hand-held.

I've looked on the Internet and, so far, I haven't found any off-the-shelf
antennas. I did, however, find several websites that have instructions for
home-brew designs but none were specifically for mode A.

One possibility that occurred to me is to combine 2 different types, such as
an eggbeater for 2 m and a hand-held HF loop for 10 m. One drawback that I
see for this arrangement is that it might be too big or too heavy for it to
be practical as a hand-held unit.

Does anyone know of a commercially available mode A antenna suitable for
hand-held operation or know of a home-brew design for one?

Thank you.

I've been on satellites for just over 3 years and I've logged over 340
different stations and over 270 grid squares, making contacts in 5 different

[amsat-bb] Final Preparations For Mars Science Laboratory Launch

2011-11-10 Thread B J

Launch is scheduled for the 25th.

One critical factor is the life-time of the on-board batteries. Most
reports I read mentioned 3 days, though I've seen some which estimated 2
weeks.

In the past few weeks, I've often had problems hearing AO-51 here in DO33. A
year ago, signals of at least S3 on my FT-817ND were common. Now they are
weaker.

As well, I get the impression that the signal polarity has changed. Formerly,
I could hold my Arrow dual-band Yagi with the 2 m elements nearly horizontal
and still hear the satellite. Now, I have to turn it nearly 90 degrees,
sometimes changing the orientation more than once during a pass.

Some of that I might attribute to my operating a portable station within a
residential area in the city, but I definitely noticed a significant difference
between what I hear from AO-51 now and what it was before the satellite was
flipped.

I live beside one of the biggest shopping centres in the city and I've got no
obstructions from due N to nearly due NW for lower elevation passes. At much
higher angles, I can follow it from nearly directly overhead to SSW.

In the past, I could tell when AO-51 was within view because the background
noise would drop significantly. Since I'm operating a portable station, I use
that to track it. Lately, it hasn't been as easy.

I've noticed that it's been rather quiet during later morning passes (say,
after 1500 UTC).

BTW, were you at the flea market at the Yellowhead Inn this past Saturday?
I've been to each one since I got my callsign 5 years ago and I'm sure that
this one had the most people. I was looking for a manual HF + 6 m tuner but
couldn't fine one, but there were lots of other items that I bought that I
could use.

It was a good opportunity to meet hams in person that I'd spoken to by radio,
including some from local nets. It was certainly a good way to spend two hours.

Two months ago, I had no problem getting my Arrow onto a plane. I simply
disassembled part of it and put the pieces inside my suitcase. When my luggage
was scanned, I was queried about it and I explained what it was for. No
further questions were asked.

Getting all my radio gear through the security check was relatively easy. By
comparison, I always had to take my laptop out and have it examined.
