no, if you take or send your cards to an arrl awards manager (i am one for
vucc,
was and 5bwas), you do not pay anything other than a check to the arrl for the
cost of your award plus the postage to return your cards to you (if you did not
take them in person). we are not allowed to accept any fee for checking cards,
we volunteer to do this for other hams. i became an awards manager long ago
when
there was none in houston and i had to send my cards to san antonio. i have
checked many a card since then.

Do you need to pay the card checker the $.20/QSO, or is that only if you
send them directly to ARRL??

I agree with Rick - the wording is not very clear.

Hi Jeff and the BB,

I just found both applications on the ARRL website. (the old form, date
2009,
and the new form, date Jan. 2011) see following website:

http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Awards/VUCC%20App%202011.pdf

It looks like instead of a flat $10 fee, they now have gone to multiple fees
for postage, the application and number of contacts. If I'm comprehending
this correctly, if you apply for additional VUCC sticker, in the US and a
ARRL
member, and turn in 60 cards, it would cost you the following:

$1 postage, $7 application fee, and $.20 x 60 = $12 for a total of $20.00

Is this correct? I welcome all replies, if not.

73 all,

Rick WA4NVM

 Hi all,

I was just looking over the VUCC award application and noticed that they
 now
charge 20 cents per QSO. Is this fee only applicable if cards are sent to
HQ for submission or in general even if you take them to a card checker?
 Thanks in advance!

I agree on TV rotors. Its an excellent inexpensive way to get elevation.
The U100/110 is what I use as well and its well suited because you can put
the boom right through the rotor.

There are some nice pictures of setups using these rotors on this sites:

And there’s a QST article on this in the Dec 1998 issue
You can even build a controller for computer control but I’m currently
 rotating elevation and azimuth manually.

 Hi Marco,

If you are looking to lash something together (instead of going with a
purpose-built Elevation rotor), I and others have had success with
Television-type rotors that have a through-hole for the mast. Mounted on
their side, they seem to perform very well. Just keep things balanced, and
protected from the weather and they should be happy.

 See: http://home.wavecable.com/~ko6th/http://home.wavecable.com/%7Eko6th/

I used an Alliance U-110. It has performed flawlessly for about 10 years
 now.

 Good luck,

... The Arrow does not publish any gain numbers ...

... ELK publishes the normal numbers you would expect ...

Now, after reading previous posts the past day on this, the FIRST thing that
comes t mind is whether or not the writer got his antenna as a freebie as he
demeans other antenna alternatives ... AND I WISH NONE OF US HAD TO THINK LIKE
THIS.

Because a writer here wrote a mini-review of the Elk, and stated it was very
impressive as compared to the Arrow. I have to tip my cap to him for his
honesty - he apparently (and hopefully!) won't let availability of freebies
sway his opinion of actual performance. But another AMSAT member is impressed
with receiving free equipment - which is being shown to cloud the truth as to
performance between competing equipment.

Some think Arrow's owner is arrogant in that he didn't commission a formal
test on the gain of his antennas. On the other hand, those of us that have used
them know that they work. I had an engineer client purchase one from me back
when I worked for HRO about five years ago. He was standing outside, waiting
for
me to open shop the next morning, carrying his Arrow to return. This cannot
possibly work, he adamantly exclaimed. It is engineered all wrong. I want a
refund.

Because i had recommended the product due to me own personal experience with
them, part of me wanted to professionally challenge him and learn more about
his overnight experience with the Arrow. But seeing how determined he was about
it being engineered all wrong, I changed my thinking to, Hey, I can purchase
it myself at a open item discount.

And I did. And it is the VERY SAME antenna I use to this day for demos and
presentation.

BUT - back to the last few messages. What should we all learn? Unfortunately,
we
now have to think behind the scenes when we read felow AMSAT members' product
reviews. We're seeing the fact that some vendors give away products has been
able to sway and taint honest reporting.

This article is a good one: http://www.innismir.net/article/26 I've
emailed it to bad apples and newbies several times in the past.

That being said, all the high power FM satellites have always had the
capacity to be a mess. UO-14 was worse than AO-51, partially because it
was 4 watts and you could truly work it on an HT antenna. There were
passes of UO-14 that sounded like Field Day from beginning to end.

More and more operators are using half duplex systems on the FM
satellites, and this really has an impact when things get busy. Listen
to enough passes and when things jam up, and you'll figure out who is
full duplex, and who can hear well too. All of us need to encourage, by
education and example, full duplex operation as soon as possible in an
operators station evolution. Equipment is getting harder to find new,
but you can find used 2m uplink rigs for dirt cheap used, and almost as
much new as you'd save by forgoing the Arrow diplexer!

We should also self-limit our QSOs when it gets busy. Sometimes it can
be hard to do. Personally, I tend to get dogpiled a little bit when I
get on. I'll answer someone if they call me (usually) but won't initiate
more than one or two QSOs, and those are usually new guys I hear. I also
often ignore stations who exhibit poor manners and QRM other stations or
QSOs. A little passive-aggressive, but it often gets the point across.

Problem is Damon, is that some of the worse offenders are guys who've been
around ever since I have been. Everyone out to get that elusive Grid Square

pretty much void the FM'er anymore, unless something special comes up.

For another 2 cents worth: (I know I'll get flamed) If there is some station
announcing here on the BB that they are going to a special grid location that
is
rare or needed by someone, then give them and others a break. Namely, if he or
even any other station that is working Portable or HT status, work him, then
QRT, and leave the freq for others. 'Hogging' the channel, working or calling
the same old station you've worked a zillion times before and not letting
others
work the Portable/HT stations, just to satisfy your QSO count for more
wallpaper
just doesnt hack it, in my opinion. end of rant extinguisher in

Subject: [amsat-bb] Re: Elk dualband antenna experiences

I'll add my two cents.

I've used the Elk exclusively for the last few months operating
portable in my backyard (and while camping, etc). The Elk sits on a
photoraphic tripod, and I use a little netbook computer to display the
satellite plot and aim the Elk accordingly. I absolutely love the
antenna, it assembles/disassembles quick, doesn't take up much space,
and has more than enough gain to work all the FM and SSB sats in this
configuration.

What I *have* noticed is that I do have to aim the Elk where the sat
is. If I lower the antenna to horizontal, I notice a significant
fading. That much is to be expected, so if you are in a situation
where you can't elevate the antenna, just aim it up a certain number
of degrees (maybe 15-30 depending on your horizon) so that it's close
enough for low passes, and the high passes (where sat is much closer)
should also work.

As for polarization, I've noticed that I get much better performance
out of the Elk by rotating the antenna to match the polarization of
the satellite at any given instant. I have the PVC mount swivels
fairly loose, so it doesn't take much to flip the antenna back and
forth a little to find the best match. When polarization is matching,
I can have better than S8 sigs, and rotating the polarization 90
degrees will often decrease my sigs to S2 or below. So ... for a
fixed installation, with fixed polarization, you'll likely encounter
some deep fades in the passes, no matter which you choose. So far
I've found that I typically use almost vertical polarization
compared to less frequently using horizontal polarization, so if I
had to choose between the two, I'd go vertical ... but it may not make
much difference!

One thing I've seen on the lists has been the recommendation to add a
pre-amp to the antenna. Typically people will do this with an Arrow,
since it has separate VHF / UHF outputs so it's easier to config for
preamp. Those that use this method report great results, since the
preamp overcomes much of the signal loss on the UHF downlink. Since
the Elk has a single dual-band output, you may have to look into
duplexers to split out the UHF signal for the preamp.

Hope that helps! That all being said, I've been putting together an
outdoor antenna system over the last few weeks (it's hard to sit in
the rain with the Elk and the twin FT-817's!) ... new system is a 4-el
VHF yagi and 15-el UHF yagi with preamps, on an az-el rotator.
Initial testing seems to indicate that it works pretty well -- so I'm
looking forward to staying dry during satellite contacts for a while!

How does the Elk Dualband yagi work as a satellite antenna in a base setup
when you are not elevating it? Is it better to mount it for vertical or
horizontal polarization to get maximum coverage of satellite passes? Still
trying to figure out the best FM sat setup here after some station redesign.

Does anybody have any ideas on how I could reduce the UHF output power to 5 W?

[amsat-bb] Re: AO-7 Mode A Antenna (update)

2010-11-29 Thread John Neeley
In reference to the change I made building the vertical dipole for AO-7 Mode A,
I now have a better option that is working out great..the Moxon beam. I
found a calculator for working out the dimensions at:

http://www.moxonantennaproject.com

This website has all sorts of ideas in making this simple antenna.

I just building one to see how well it would work in my situation here, I made
my version using 1/2 PVC for a light weight frame and for the elements, #12
stranded electrical wire, which I zipped tied to the pvc frame. As shown in
the
picture, I just mounted it below my Arrow dualband yagi, at an elevation of
only
8 ft. Even at this low mounting, and surrounded by homes, I am quite impressed
with this antennas results. I would recommend this antenna to anyone wanting
to
try and work Mode A with a low price RX antenna.

[amsat-bb] Re: AO-7 Mode A Antennas

2010-11-13 Thread John Neeley
In my reference to my thread of last month concerning what folks were using for
AO-7 Mode A RX antennas (29.45mhz), just about everyone had a different type,
from CB mobile whips to Cubical Quads. In my quest to build something simple,
that I hoped would fit my property footprint, I came up with a Vertical Wire
Dipole, housed inside some PVC which is mounted against the wooden property
fence. This antenna has seemed to work fairly well, and I've had numerous
contacts using it. It seems to fit my bill and wallet also. No preamp is used
at the antenna, which I am sure would/could help some, as only feeding this
antenna with 50' of RG-58/u coax to the FT-847 transceiver. I have noticed
that
sometimes I hear the other station quite well, whereas I just barely can hear
my
own signal coming back on the downlink. I really think this is due to my
uplink
antenna which consists of just a single Arrow with the 2m elements in the
horizontal plane. Unknown if it would improve if vertical, but too it could be
a problem from RH to LH polarization, which I noticed when I still had my KLM's
(which I should have never let go). Anyway, for those looking for an easy
downlink Mode A antenna, this vertical seems to fit the bill, at least for me.

Alan,

I agree with you totally. It is going to be an ongoing problem and unless
individual operators take responsibility for their emissions, it is going to
continue. Even with coordination the frequency is still not owned by any
particular station. It is just common courtesy that we need to show to each
other. Are these APRS stations just beaconing in hopes of hitting the ISS or
are

they in use for normal APRS? I don't see 145.825MHz being used as a terrestrial
frequency. I can understand the problem when HO-68 and the ISS are in the same
footprint, but to run a station continuously on 145.825MHz is crazy. I do send
packets to the ISS myself, but ONLY when it is in view and turned on. It all
boils down to the old idea of Listen before you talk.

Subject: RE: [amsat-bb] Re: AO-51 short experiment

Bob,

145.825 is the established space APRS frequency, and has been/is used by
more than just the ISS for years. There are other APRS satellites which are
intermittently active on the same frequency, and I expect there will be
others in the future. I can't address the formal coordination issue, but
anything with an uplink on that frequency is guaranteed to have problems.
The only question is whether those problems are tolerable. There is little
to no APRS activity on that frequency over most of the world, and then there
is the question of both HO-68 and the ISS being in the same footprint. The
HO-68 has an inclination of about 102 degrees, the ISS about half that.
Finally, the ISS is not active on that frequency 24/7. It operates on other
frequencies for voice and SSTV, and is often QRT completely due to other
operations. In an imperfect world, it looks like a reasonable tradeoff,
though other evaluations are certainly possible.

The problem of unattended APRS beacons does cut both ways. There are some
daylight-only APRS satellites. When they enter periods of extended
illumination, they can be commanded from their default modes. However, even
a single braaap can pull the DC busses low enough that the command
stations need to start over again. WB4APR has lamented this problem, with
specific calls, in other venues. Looking at some of the paths, both in
Drew's example and my reception, there are stations whose paths have not
been updated for years.

The sort of courtesy/coordination issue is not limited to space operations.
A ham relatively local to me fired up a propagation beacon on 30 meters this
month. It is/was within 200 HZ of an APRS frequency which has been in use
for some time. Quite a fight over who owns the frequency. ;)

All- I have received complaints concerning delivery of the Journal that is
mailed non-profit 2nd class . According to the Supervisor of 2nd class
non-profit at the Post Office, the problem is on the receiver's end. If the
magazine does not bounce back to us, it is in the system ready to be
delivered.

Although the magazine is mailed in MD, some members located in the state get
their Journal later than members in the in other parts of the country. So -
there is really nothing we can do at our end. The printer generally takes a
week from the time he receives the files from the Editor. It then takes
about 3-4 days for the mailer to get it to the Post Office.
If you do not receive an issue, please let me know and I will send a
replacement copy.

 Hello Joe and the list.

If I can explain a little about how bulk mailing works, it might help
 explain
some issues that people have with getting the journal. I work for a
printer
that does bulk mailings also and this is how they do things. AMSAT's
 printer
may do it a totally different way than how my employer does it.

First, It all depends on when the mailer gets the printed copies. There
may
 be
issues with paper used, when the files arrive, scheduled deadlines met on
 time,
 things like that.

Second, the sender supplies a file with names and addresses that need to
be
printed onto either labels or onto the printed material in a certain
space.
This takes about anywhere from 30 minutes to a whole day (equipment
issues)
 to
set up aligning the print heads. Each process has its own procedures and
 differs between mailers.

Third, depending on what the volume (quantity) is, it could take a day to
a
week to print names and addresses onto the printed material.

Fourth, keeping the addresses sorted so that they are going to the right
 destination can get complex sometimes.

Fifth, after everything is sorted by zip codes and destinations, then
comes
shipping via semi to the separate sort facilities across the country and
outside country destinations. Yes, depending on quantity, bulk mailing
gets
shipped to sort facilities across the country by contracted carriers.

Sixth, it could take as much as a week to get from the mailers dock to a
 sort
facility on the other side of the country depending on where the mailer is
 located.

If you look at the mailing label area on your journal next time, you'll
see
that little square that has this saying in it:

 Periodicals
 POSTAGE PAID
 At Silver Springs, MD
 and at additional mailing offices

that means that it has gone from the mailer to at least one sort facility
 in
the path before it gets to your local post office and your home mailbox.

There is also meeting the criteria of how the USPS wants things sorted and
weighed and. The list is endless currently. My place of employment has
 had
the USPS reject a load because it either weighed one pound more or less
 than
what is stated on the documents. The USPS also has guidelines that have to
 be
met about thickness and weight of paper. That can hold up a mailing also.

This is not to say that this is how AMSAT does the mailing of the journal.
 I
am just stating how its done at my place of employment to give everyone an
idea of what it takes to mail the Journal each time. Things do change each
time the Journal is mailed so that has to be taken into account each time.
Proposed deadlines have to be met to keep things flowing. If one deadline
 is
not met, that can hold things up by a week or more.

[amsat-bb] Roadtrip to CN70

2010-08-21 Thread John Neeley
I will be leaving CN81 tomorrow morning and heading for CN70 grid for a day or
two. CN70 doesnt have much landmass, so suspect it is a rare grid? Sofar
passes havent favored anything to the east, due to the time the birds are
within
range of me..too darn early in am. Here in CN81 I am surrounded by large Pine
trees, so paths havent been that good either, so hopefully along the beaches of
CN70 I'll have more of an open shot, without hitting any Sea Gulls.

Good morning,

I am hoping someone can help answer a question. I am running SatPC32 12.8a
and controlling my Yaesu FT 897 as my uplink radio. Everything works fine
except that I cannot get the subtones to update.

I am using the following data in my SubTones.SQF file (as recommended in the
help files)

AO-51,67.0,$3F,1
SO-50,67.0,$3F,1
SO-50,74.4,$3E,3
SO-67,233.6,$01,36
HO-68,67.0,$3F,1

I'm running Windows XP and my baud rate is 9600, although I have varied it
to see if that would resolve my issue.

Everything thing updates on the radio as it should (including the radio
turning the tones 'on' and going into split mode); the only issue is that
the tone is not updated, it will stay on the last tone used. For example if
I use our local repeater, the radio will still use that tone.

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

I will be taking a one day trip up the coast a bit to CM94. This is the
grid that contains Vandenberg AFB which launches its fair share of
satellites (unfortunately, I will not be operating from the base) and I've
been told it is a bit of a rare grid these days.

If you are looking for this grid, below are the passes I plan to operate.
These will mostly be pretty high passes for me which is good as I will be
using a handheld Arrow antenna. I wish there were a lower elevation pass of
AO-07 in the east or even better, an easterly pass of HO-68 in FM mode but
these are not in the cards. If there is enough demand, I can work on
activating this grid again in the future.

Here are the passes I plan to work:

Day Object AOS(U) LOS maxEl Az

14.07.2010 AO-27 21:02 21:17 52 153 - 353

Cody, WY and Mt Rushmore in SD, otherwise it is driving to other spots that
look interesting. Possible other states to visit are ND, MT, ID, WA and OR on
the return loop, but that isnt set in stone. There is a possibllity that we'll
make a trek into Nebraska, so I can pick up my Gulf Alpha's that are ready, but
not sure yet. More than likely I will be on passes early AM or sunrise and
early PM or dusk. Hopefully I will be in some grids that are needed by some,

from what we gathered. He's in BL01 grid square.

Folks, It was a worth a short on todays' 15:38 UTC AO7 Pass but no Joy!

Unfortunately we have had heavy winds in excess of 30 to 40 mph gusting to
50mph. The static levels on 2m receive are very high and I could barely hear a
few voices on the satellite. The only station I could barely make out was
KC7MG. I was looking for K8YSE, WD9EWK and several others, but I just could
not hear my own downlink. Strange because the day before I had pass all to
myself over the Pacific and I had all the SatPC setting correct and ready to go
for this pass. I could hear myself perfectly.

I also was pointing my antenna straight at a big rain cloud in the path of the
satellite and I am sure that did not help matters with the signal or the QRN on
2m.

Sorry it was worth the try but tropical conditions are causing some interesting
attenuation and noise on AO7 and VU52 downlinks. FO-29 and HO68 on the other
work like a charm I can work those with 5 W and my Elk antenna with no trouble.
One could probably turn down the power even more and get into those satellites
without any difficulty.

Diving got canceled due to bad weather. I will take a look what I can still
work this afternoon. I will be out of dinner which means I can't make the FO-29
passes at 03:26 or 05:07 UTC. Sorry. Last day here and I need to take out my
significant other to keep her happy.

Aloha from windy Kauai.

Hi Jerry!

I think K8YSE and others were focusing on AA5UK/KH6 in
Hawaii after 1538 UTC or so. Probably the last shot for
many to get Adrian
out there. I think I heard you in there, but was
trying for Hawaii also.

You have a good woman there, Adrian, for letting you 'play radio' while on
holidays. Mine only tolerates it somewhat. I do know that those folks who did
finally got to make contacts with you really appreciate your efforts and all,
taking away time from you and your xyl's time in the tropical, but wet islands.
Too bad the weather was not in your favor for some of it. Have a safe trip
home and again, thanks for the qso.

I was able to find some time yesterday to repair my L band DEM linear
always the same issues with the N type
connector solder tab on the board who break if the coax is putting some
 stress on the center pin.

Hi Luc, VE2DWE

To solve the above problem you must use a captivated N female connector in
wich the central pin is NOT alloved to move under pression while pushing the
central pin of the N male connector.

[amsat-bb] Dressler VV 2000 GAAS preamp

2010-03-21 Thread John Neeley
I picked up a Dressler VV2000 GAAS preamp yesterday at a swapfest, and wonder
if anyone on the board has ever used one? It is a mast mount 146-148 mhz Low
Noise Preamp with N connectors. I have the manual, which was downloaded off
the internet.

Just curious as to see if anyone else had one of the critters...and any
comments... it can take 1kw of power...dont think my FT847 will ever do
that...
