[amsat-bb] Re: ARISSat-1
Hi Jerry, I don't know what a class "a" ground station consists of, but I'm sure the kids will get a blast just listening to the recorded children's greetings broadcasted in FM voice mode. I caught one of these transmissions when they first tested ARISSat-1 earlier in the year using only a HT with a simple homebrew 70cm yagi like the ones listed below http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/information/faqs/crow/JulAug06AmsatJournal.pdf http://www.ea4cax.com/paginaea4cyq/cju/cjuingles.pdf http://www.wa5vjb.com/references/Cheap%20Antennas-LEOs.pdf I've built all 3, but the easiest, I think, is the one from AMSAT (Richard Crow N2SPI). The instructions are *VERY* detailed. I take it you're a school teacher? Even your students can build it. I made mine from 10 gage solid copper wire because I couldn't find the aluminum grounding wire, but everything else can be purchased from RadioShack (The Source in Canada, eh). Even if ARISSat-1 doesn't "fly", pardon the pun, you'll still have a decent downlink antenna for the other FM satellites. [amsat-bb] Re: Good mobile antennas to use
But this is not what a 19.5" whip does. The 1/4 (3/4) wave 19.5" whip does not have gain on the horizon (so it is rarely used for terrestrial mobile) but its pattern is ideal for satellite work on high passes. It does NOT then have a null in its pattern that causes the "crappy" contacts, and it does have plenty of gain above about 25 degrees and it is a smooth pattern not like the multi lobes of a standard mobile gain antenna. Hi Bob, This is off topic and didn't want to start something on the list... :), but can I convert my current magmount gain antenna simply by replacing the whip or is the "gain" stuff in the magmount itself? If so, would any thin steel rod do? I'd really like to give this a try! 73's Peter VE7NGP ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? If you run your car into a ditch, don't panic. Four men in a four-wheel drive pickup truck with a tow chain will be along shortly. Don't try to help them, just stay out of their way. This is what they live for. Don't be surprised to find movie rentals and bait in the same store. Do NOT buy food at this store. You will be instructed later on how to use it. Don't be worried at not understanding what people are saying. They can't understand you either. The first Southern statement to creep into a transplanted Northerner's vocabulary is the adjective 'big'ol,' truck or 'big'ol' boy. Most Northerners begin their Southern-influenced dialect this way. All of them are in denial about it. The proper pronunciation you learned in school is no longer proper. Be advised that 'He needed killin.' is a valid defense here. You just have to go there. Do not be surprised to find that 10-year olds own their own shotguns, they are proficient marksmen, and their mammas taught them how to aim. In the South, we have found that the best way to grow a lush green lawn is to pour gravel on it and call it a driveway. AND REMEMBER: If you do settle in the South and bear children, don't think we will accept them as Southerners. After all, if the cat had kittens in the oven, we ain't gonna call 'em biscuits. Hi Clint, thanks very much for your update and the work you are doing to promote satellite work on ham radio! 73, Peter VE7NGP -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Clint Bradford Sent: Tuesday, March 16, 2010 8:24 PM To: AMSAT BB Subject: [amsat-bb] Sat Presentation in Illinois I just finished giving my "How to Work Amateur Satellites with Low Power" presentation to a classroom in Southern Illinois. Club president Gregg Sperling, KB9E, contacted me a few weeks ago, asking if I could speak at the March meeting of his Southern Illinois University Amateur Radio Club in Carbondale, IL. NO - I didn't use up my wife's frequent flyer miles. We did it via Skype. Audio AND video. I prepared a .pdf file ahead of time, tailored to the club (I always have a couple club-related trivia questions ... and always have the club's grid square id'd in the program) - and emailed it ahead of time to the tech guy. All slides were numbered, so we could stay in sync. The club used a computer/projector to show the slideshow, and I was able to see and hear the classroom attendees - and they could see and hear me - via Skype. Skype is almost "full duplex," so I could hear comments and questions ... and I could see when a hand raised up for a question. It really worked out well! So, presenters: I guess we are no longer limited to "hundred mile radii" restrictions for our shows! It wasn't as effective as actually going to a site, demo'ing a FM bird, THEN presenting. But it sure got the word out to a club that I couldn't physically get to! We had a great time! Clint Bradford, K6LCS 909-241-7666 ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Re: Field Day mode for AO-51
Hi Drew, thanks very much for your feedback! Guess I was too naïve earlier, but now see the light! :) Also after reading threads from Robert and Mark, I agree, there might be too much non-productive traffic and high expectations, especially on FD. I will stick to receive only as Mark suggested! My vote is changing to L/U just in case I can't find a 1.2 GHz receiver :) ...learning a lot from you guys and this list, thanks! 73, Peter VE7NGP -Original Message- From: Andrew Glasbrenner [mailto:glasbren...@mindspring.com] Sent: Monday, May 03, 2010 2:33 PM To: Ng, Peter Cc: amsat-bb@amsat.org; ao51-mo...@amsat.org Subject: Re: Field Day mode for AO-51 Ng, Peter wrote: > ...sorry, I meant to vote for V/U mode as I only have VHF/UHF equipment! > > Keep in mind there will likely be three or four transponders birds, and two to four other FM birds available that weekend! It's been my perception that a good portion of AMSAT's sustaining members leave and breathe the highest tech they can manage. Eight out of eight satellites being V/U seems counter to that goal. Mark and Bob both make good points supporting at least one area of refuge for this portion of the AMSAT population. Personally, I think the V/U FM experience on Field Day is a big turnoff to newbies, especially since so many under-prepared, over-powered and out of practice once-a-year sat ops fail miserably to get those bonus points on FM. I bet someone in your area has 1.2 Ghz capability! 73, Drew KO4MA ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? It led to the beacon problem and abnormal switch of transponder. Today we switched the satellite into safety mode at 0300Z , turn off most of onboard units, and then we re-powered up at 0440Z, the satellite was back to normal operating mode, so far the beacon operates normally. The IHU may continue to be operative. Initial tests with the S band transmitter were also not positive, although more attempts are in order. We have tried leaving the satellite in an expected state where if voltages climb high enough, the 435.150 transmitter may possibly be heard. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't automatic doppler corrections dynamically change your frequency to compensate for doppler? Would this mean anyone engaging in doppler correction are actually drifting into a stable frequency? 73 Peter ve7ngp -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Clayton Coleman Sent: February 7, 2014 08:43 To: AMSAT-BB Subject: [amsat-bb] Listening on USB when operating CW I assume many home station satellite operators utilize some kind of full-duplex radio or combination of two radios for CW on the current satellites. Lately, as I have been listening a lot more with my FUNcube Dongle Pro+, I have observed many CW stations drifting across the satellites' passband. I realize this is not a new phenomenon. I would assume these drifting stations are NOT using any type of computer Doppler correction. If they were using computer control, I would assume their CW would stay on the same place in the transponder's passband. It is visually apparent when the stations manually make larger frequency movements because of the curve displayed on my SDR application's waterfall display. Many times I have been engaged in a QSO only to have someone CQ'ing on CW drift across my existing QSO. Anyone who operates satellites has probably had this happen to them many times. Sometimes myself or others in QSO may try to tell the CW operator "Hello - QSO in progress" but it is apparent they are not hearing us. My question is, does it make sense for people using CW on the satellites to have their receiver set to USB? Do some operators do this? If listening on a VFO with USB and had your transmit VFO set to CW, would this help make it easier for CW ops to know when they have drifted into an existing voice QSO? 73 Clayton W5PFG ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Re: Listening on USB when operating CW
Thanks Clayton, that's good to know 73 Peter ve7ngp -Original Message- Peter, That is correct and what I have attempted to describe. A station not adjusting properly for Doppler shift will appear to "move" across the passband into stations who are making corrections. (voice or CW) There are several categories for correction, as I see it by order of occurrence...(and there may be more) 1 - People who use "full" Doppler correction via software, adjusting both TX and RX to stay on the satellite's frequency. 2 - People who use "half" Doppler correction by tuning the higher of two frequencies. This is common for people who are portable or want the simplest method of staying on another station. In the mode, you will move slightly. I do this often in the field. It's not perfect. 3 - People who use "TX only" correction. I see this often and I believe it's an incorrect practice to always tune TX because sometimes that means on mode J you'll likely move across QSO's in progress. 4 - Probably the least common I observe, people who use "full" Doppler correction manually. I believe it is a little more difficult to do this on fast moving LEO's, especially on CW. My original email was trying to discover whether or not listening on USB while transmitting on CW might make it easier for "CW drifters" to know they are part of a problem. Occasionally when this problem occurs with USB voice, the perpetrating stations are not able to hear well enough to know they are causing a problem. 73 Clayton W5PFG ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Re: [amsat-bb] Help on setting a RTL-SDR Dongle
Hi Enzo, I also purchased one to play. For this step, first tune the dongle to a known frequency. Actually any known frequency will do, but the weather frequencies are usually strong and you can even use the tiny antenna included with the dongle to receive them. You will most likely see the signal peak is off from the tuned frequency (red line) of your SDR software. For HDSDR, click the "ExtIO" button, which will open up the dialogue box to adjust the PPM and other settings of the dongle. Put in any number just to see which direction your dongle is off and go on from there. Mine is at +38. For other SDR software, just look for the PPM adjustment and do the same thing. Ensure your dongle is warmed up and stable, about 10 minutes, before you calibrate. I also have the Funcube dongle pro+ and by far FCD is a better product, but for the price, RTL-SDR is worth playing :) ...have fun! 73 peter ve7ngp -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Vincenzo Mone Sent: June 8, 2014 01:08 To: Amsat - BBs Subject: [amsat-bb] Help on setting a RTL-SDR Dongle Hi folks I am interested to receive the satellites with the USB RTL-SDR Dongle.
