[amsat-bb] Field Day ISS passes

2014-07-02 Thread richardfisher
Does any one have an audio copy of the ISS passes on Saturday for the
east coast about doing it re? I know that someone from AZ recorded the
passes there but I didn't think about doing it here. I hope that someone
did.

Thanks

2014-07-02 Thread Scott Richardson
I rested a digital recorder on the speaker of a handheld to get about 4 minutes
of ISS audio on 6/29 near 2141Z. The recording picks up my vain attempts to get
attention, which also desensed the receiver at times, so it's not clean, but
it's better than nothing. These are the acknowledgments I can hear (with a tiny
amount of guesswork).

[amsat-bb] field day results - due date

2014-06-30 Thread Bruce
I saw a lot of great posts to the BB regarding field day. Now, do not
forget to turn in your summary sheets in time so that your group can be
counted in AMSAT field day. The final date to turn them in is a lot
sooner than the ARRL date. ARRL July 29 AMSAT July
14

The Satellite Summary Sheet should be used for submission of the AMSAT
Field Day competition and be received by KK5DO (email or postal mail) by
11:59 P.M. CDT, Monday, July 14, 2014.

Attach your stories of field day and some pictures. In the past we have
been able to use almost all the pictures sent.

[amsat-bb] Field Day 2014

2014-06-25 Thread Jim Reicher
Thanks to all who responded to my query about tracking software.  I have
another question.  I've been ignoring the reflector for a while, and I've lost
track of the satellites that are currently usable for voice/cw contacts.  After
some research, I have the following in my list: AO7, FO29, SO50, VO52, AO73,
LO78.

Am I missing any?  Are the above birds (especially the newer ones) actually
available?  Thanks!

Re: [amsat-bb] Field Day 2014

2014-06-25 Thread Paul Stoetzer
LO-78 may or may not be active for Field Day. I will continue to
monitor their Facebook page and will let the BB know if they turn it
on (if they don't post a message themselves).

AO-73 should be available in sunlight, but that depends on the command
stations switching it into continuous transponder mode on Friday
evening. They normally send a message on Friday evening UK time to the
BB that the command has been sent. Don't count on your Doppler
software to work 100% out of the box on this one. Your transmit
frequency will be 6.5+ kHz higher than it should be for Doppler
correction alone.

AO-7 has been mode jumping as the solar angles at this point in it's
orbit are not optimal for supplying full power to the satellite. With
so many stations likely to be running way too much power this weekend,
it seems likely that it will mode jump to Mode A or Mode D
(transponders off), especially on ascending passes.

FO-29, VO-52, and SO-50 should all be working great!

[amsat-bb] Field Day 2013 - Sats

2013-09-03 Thread Clint Bradford
I thought that the Field Day rules (both ARRL and AMSAT rules) limited the
number of contacts for each entrant/submission/club to one QSO per satellite.

Was that correct? Would there be any point in a club making, say, 20 contacts
on Field Day? Would additional points be available for a club making more than
one QSO per bird?

And as far as it is known, will the same sat rule be in effect for 2014?

Thanks.

[amsat-bb] Field Day Question

2013-04-23 Thread Les Rayburn
Please tolerate another newbie question. I know that during the upcoming
Field Day, participants are being encouraged to limit themselves to one

contact on SO-50 or to use the linear birds when possible.

I'm chasing grid squares towards Satellite VUCC and other awards. Is it
acceptable and good operating practice for my station to make multiple
contacts during
FD on the linear birds? Seems like a great chance to pick up grids that
would otherwise not be active on the birds, but I don't want to be a LID.

What would be the best practice for an operator like myself during FD? I
won't otherwise be participating in the contest. Again, my thanks for
the advice
and counsel of more experienced operators. Everyone on the birds has
been great and helpful so far, especially K4FEG!

[amsat-bb] Field Day site-to-site texting

2012-06-22 Thread Bob Bruninga
Every FD site will usually have APRS on line. Remember, you can contact any
other FD site in the world on your APRS channel. (144.39 in North America).

Just send them an APRS text message.

Of course, this assumes you know their callsign. To facilitate learning who
else is on the air, send a CQ FD message to the APRS CQSERVER and your CQ
will go to every other CQ FD site on the planet. This has nothing to do
with FD rules and points. It is just a way to have fun and be able to
contact any FD site without knowing apriori their calling freq.

Just send an APRS message to CQSRVR and make the first two words of the
message be CQ FD for example, CQ FD from Bob in Annapolis, MD. These
do not count for points, but are a great way to have ham radio fun with
other sites.

This will log you onto the CQ FD message group and from then on, you will
get ALL OTHER such messages from all other such stations. When you DO see
an incoming CQ FD message, now then you know their callsign and can MESSAGE
THEM DIRECTLY from then on.

To keep the load down, you can only send one CQ FD message once every 30
minutes, but you will remain logged on for up to 12 hours. After no
activity, you will be dropped.

Oh, for more info about APRS and Field Day, see http://aprs.org/cqsrvr.html

For Field Day, I will be looking to help out with contacts, Especially

I plan to concentrate on the linear satellites but SO50 is flying over
the US late at night so I will try it as well. those that are planning
to try a satellite contact for the points drop me a private email and I
will listen for you in the wee hours, I have already had several
requests from some of the other night owls like myself, so let me know
so I can be listening.

Just give me a general idea of which passes you are looking at I am sure
I can work a few stations!

Good Luck everyone, have fun but most of all, BE SAFE LET'S NOT HAVE ANY

[amsat-bb] Field Day

2012-06-22 Thread Hector, CO6CBF
Hello All

I will be operating on the FD using my own call sign and 1E DX

I plan to concentrate on the linear satellites and I'll try to make my 1
QSO on AO-27, SO-50 and ISS digipeater. I will be able also to operate on
FO-29 and SO-50 during the late night and early morning passes. I think
that It is a great opportunity to encourage the amateur radio by satellites
in my Radio Club, So I have invited a lot satellite enthusiasts to my home
to listen the satellite operation. It is my first Field Day on the linear
birds and I know that it will be very fun as It is said that during Field
Day the transponders come alive like 20 meters on a weekend.

If someone want to try a Sat contact with me only drop me a private email
and I will be looking for you.

[amsat-bb] Field Day #2 (Golden Packet Event)

2011-06-28 Thread Bob Bruninga
For those portable AMSAT folks that did not get their full outdoors
satrisfaction via the birds, do not forget the PACKET APRS Field Day on
Sunday 24 July from Mountain Tops along the Appalachain trail from Alabama
to Maine and along the Pacific Crest Trail from San Diego to Seattle!

This is a 4 hour event with the goal of terrestrially digipeating APRS
packet messages over thousnands of miles via a number of IDEALLY located
portable digipeater stations (Think D700's)
Carried to the tops of these strategic mountains. We can do the East Coast
in 14 hops and think the west coast can be done in much less with their
higher mountains. Also there is an opportunity for a Continental Divide
Trail attempt if anyone wants to get that started...

This will be our 3rd attempt along the Appalachians and 1st attempt along
the Pacific Crest Trail.

Please see the web page:
www.aprs.org/at-golden-packet.html

There are links to a web page for EVERY peak to help organize the assault
parties. Lots of un-filled slots, especially out west.

My take on the field day sats:

Why not some one on the East Coast and some one on the West Coast volunteer to

[amsat-bb] Field Day Recordings Posted

2011-06-27 Thread John Papay
Field Day recordings for AO-51, AO-27 and SO-50
are on my website. The late night-early morning
passes were not crowded and could have provided
opportunities for those trying to make the 100 point
bonus.

The recordings were made from my home station on autopilot.
Polarity was fixed on left-hand circular to favor AO-51.
AO-27 is usually better on right hand but left hand works
for most of the pass. SO-50 flops back and forth so it's
not all there.

We report; you decide.

[amsat-bb] Field Day Dual-Hop!

2011-06-25 Thread Greg D.

Well, one-way, and I didn't have the presence of mind to try to make a cross
satellite contact.

The end of the last AO-07 pass (which sounded very much like 20 meters!)
crossed with the beginning of FO-29's, so the two satellites passed within a
couple of hundred miles of each other. Since the downlink for AO-07 is in the
middle of the uplink passband for FO-29, I switched over to FO-29 to take a
listen. Sure enough, the bottom of FO-29's passband sounded like 20 meters for
a few moments. Then it went away.

Fleeting chaos. Sweet.

[amsat-bb] FIELD DAY SCORING

2010-06-05 Thread Peter Portanova
Hello,

I was in contact with the ARRL, after I read 7.3.7. and 7.3.7.1. in the Field
Day Rules. I mentioned to the League that I would like them to point out where
in those rules it would prohibit scoring the same call on multiple Linear
Satellites. They listened to my point's and agreed that even though the rules
refer to satellite contacts as a separate band there is nothing in those
rules that prohibit the aforementioned scoring. In conclusion Field Day and
the AMSAT scoring are now in agreement, have fun.

[amsat-bb] Field Day AO-51 configuration - another option

2010-05-04 Thread Patrick STODDARD (WD9EWK/VA7EWK)
Hi!

With all the talk about the possibility of an L-band uplink and/or
S-band downlink on AO-51 since there will be at least 2 other V/U
FM satellites available during Field Day weekend, what about sticking
with the V/U frequency combination but go with something different
for the 2m uplink mode? Using SSB or even CW on the 2m uplink would
make AO-51 different than the other V/U satellites, yet still provide
a challenge that more stations could take on than L-band or S-band -
and the variety that Drew mentioned that the AO-51 group wants to
provide for Field Day weekend.

Just a thought...

Wondering why all the hoopla about any of the satellites being in any
mode. AMSAT receives only about 15 entries for field day. The rest

hundreds of field day stations on the air we should have way more
entries.
