[Arches] Adding new icons to Arches from 'Fonts Awesome'

2018-12-09 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project

Hi all,

Can anyone point me in the right direction for this problem?

I tried to add new, free icons from fonts awesome, by adding them to the
bottom of the program 'font-awesome.css' and also changing the lines at the
top which show the version number. But it did not add the new fonts. Is
there another program I should change?

Thank you for your help?

[Arches] Re: BING Services key

2018-12-09 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hi all,

I had asked 3 years ago about the Bing map keys and what they are used for.
Adam gave me this very helpful answer. I understand the BING key is
necessary for geocoding and for receiving the map tiles, *which I
understood would be the latest version of Bing maps*. I had created an
account and a key which is associated with the development instance URL but
is in the settings_local.py for both our instances. So I assumed we have
the latest BING map tiles. But I spotted a mistake on the BING satellite
map we use in Arches (in both our instances - Siwa Lake is called Lake
Tanganyka - and wanted to send feedback to Bing about it. However, on
checking their website, www.bing.com/maps, I see that the label is not
there at all, whichever zoom level I use. This suggests it is a different
version of the map. I have received many messages from Bing giving updated
service terms and haven't read them properly, so perhaps I need to do
something to receive the latest versions? Can anyone throw any light on
this? We removed the geocoding as it cannot be used in Egypt.

Thank you very much.

[Arches] Arches V3: URL links in Arches reports as External references

2018-03-15 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hi everyone,

The EAD wishes to add links to external web sites for some of its
archaeological sites.

This is very easy to do using the external cross reference option. I have
input the URL and it clearly shows as a link on the input form.

However when I access the report, it is not at all clear to the user that
it is a link. You need to right click and select an option to access the
website.

Is this how it was designed to work? Am I missing something on the input? I
have uploaded screen shots

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thank you, Lucy

Hello Andrea,

Thank you very much indeed for this information, it will be a tremendous
help to us. Adam is going to make the program changes as he has become our
'technical' guru now.

We have input over a 1000 sites on our Arches EAD now, although there is
still a lot of information to enter about them such as images and
descriptions. But it is going well and I've started trying to compare our
western desert sites with Eameana', but most of my time is spent
supervising the student inputters! When they are all in Ill email you about
it.

Just to add that I restarted elastic search using the command you gave me

I did notice, however, that in the map view, it is taking a long time to
display the pop-up screen screen and comes up with the 'loading data'
message. We did not have this message before. Does anything else need to be
done, like reindexing - whatever that means!

[Arches] Connection error on Apache production server

2017-06-18 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hi all,

A really weird problem has come up on our production server.
We were starting input and could not get more than 2 users accessing
Arches. So the system administrator stopped the server, increased the size
of the CPU and increased the speed of the server. He also turned off the
firewall. He restarted the server.

When we accessed Arches again, we were unable to save the data on summary
input- we got the connection error attached. When you try looking at the
map and doing a search, no sites appear ,even though a few were input. It
seems that the database is disconnected.

Do I need to run manage.py install packages again?

[Arches] Opportunity for an all expenses paid visit to Egypt!!

2017-03-22 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hi all,

I am looking forward to attending the Arches 4.0 workshop next week, to
meeting other Arches adoptees and especially, to meeting Richard Jennings
and the Arches team again and to finally meet Adam Cox!

As you may be aware we have been having problems finding an experienced
developer with the time and the skills to modify our iteration of Arches.
We are part of the way there but the project needs to be finished off. Our
present technical person works full time and often at weekends so has not
had the necessary time to devote to the project.

Is there anyone out there who has already installed and modified Arches 3.0
who would like an all expenses paid trip to sunny Cairo to hep us complete
the customization? Two weeks would help.

If you know anyone who is interested, please let me know ASAP or at the
workshop next week.

Thank you very much,
Lucy

[Arches] Demo System - please don't clear today or tonight.

2017-03-05 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Again, thank you to the Arches team for producing such a useful
demonstration site.

We are going to be showing Arches to another inventory team tomorrow, and
as our Arches app is out of action at the moment, I have added a lot of
data to the rdm and added a couple of sites to the demo site. I do hope
the demo site will NOT be updated and extra data cleared off tonight!!

Also, I see that it is not possible to load files such as images into the
demo site, a server error results. I assume this is by design?

Thank you very much,
Lucy

[Arches] Re: Using different versions of Linux and Python

2017-02-20 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hi Adam,
I followed your instructions and we *are* using Python version 2.7.6 .I do
not totally understand about having Python 2.7.6 in the virtual
environment. I assume that that is ENV? I an uploading snips of the entire
library structure we have on our server. Our app is called 'EAD', these
libraries are not in ENV. Is this correct? is ths structure correct? We are
still having problems with compiling python by simply starting Arches - we
need to use the runserver command and the JPEG decoder did not get
installed. That is an old issue I asked you about before and you gave me a
helpful answer but we haven't been able to try it out yet.
Thank you very much for your help, as ever. Lucy

[Arches] Using different versions of Linux and Python

2017-02-12 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project

Hi all,

Having done some Arches customization we have hit some strange technical
problems so we decided to check everything from the installation of
dependencies onwards. It appears that we are using Oracle Linux 6.7 for our
Arches app. Has anyone had any problems with this?

It also seems that we are using Python v 2.6.6 not 2.7.6 which was
suggested for Arches. We know later versions can cause problems but can
earlier ones? If we need the later version of Python can we simply download
it and install without redoing the whole Arches installation again?

Thank you very much for your help!

Lucy

[Arches] Arches resource cross reference relationships authority file problems

2017-02-08 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project

Hi all,
I have come across a strange problem with the ARCHES RESOURCE
CROSS-REFERENCE RELATIONSHIPS TYPE.E32 authority file. This is named
differently from the others, without the _ between the parts of the file
name. Is this correct? The console command line utility I use to access the
server cannot read this file name. Also, I see that when looking at the
RDM, that it is not possible to change or add new types as the 'add
dropdown' form is shown, not the 'add new concept' form. Are these
problems related?

Thank you very much,

Lucy

[Arches] Description Type: Bug

2017-01-24 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project

When inputting the description for a resource, the 'type' has already been
set to the 3rd type that appears in the RDM or on the authority file. It
should just show the word 'type' in the box so you can select in
alphabetical order as usual. I know that there are some easy workarounds
for this but it would be better if the box could work in the standard way:
allowing selection in alphabetical order of the description type. The
screen shot shows how the form looks as you first enter it. You can see
that 'Summary of Significance' shows up in the box, which is the 3rd type
in the list. When 'Primary' was the 3rd type that also showed up in the
box.
I found in a post I made before that when we had less than 3 types, the
text box disappeared altogether.

Just to say that we have been having problems with the same issue. There

[Arches] Re: Compiling .py programs

2017-01-07 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hi Vincent, Adam and all,
Vincent - thank you for taking such an interest and your continued help. Yes,
where would we all be without Adam Cox! But we already had that change in and
still the .pyc would not compile within Arches.
However our new developer has discovered the cause of this problem in our
system. For some reason, the build script, build.sh was missing from the
following folder "build" in
"/opt/projects/ENV/lib/python2.7/site-packages/arches. We don't know when this
happened, at the installation or whether it got deleted later but this could be
the cause of all our problems in making modifications to Arches. I hope at
least this is the cause!

Re: [Arches] Compiling .py programs

2016-11-08 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hi again,
I have just read through some notes you put on the forum last may and
wonder if we have confused two files. Are you referring to the resource.py
file that resides in the arches_hip/models directory and therefore
should be moved to our apps/models directory? There is another file called
resource*s*.py (note the s at the end) which resides in the
.arches_hip/views directory and is different. We have changed the
former, not the latter. What is the latter used for by the way?

Re: [Arches] Compiling .py programs

2016-11-07 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hi Adam,

Thank you for your help.

Yes, we have copied the resource.py file into our app - it is in the same
directory as forms.py, ../our app/our app/models. However, the settings.py
file (and compiled version) has been modified slightly differently from
what you suggest and is located in ./our app/our app. As I do not know
python, I do not know if this is effectively the same:

RESOURCE_MODEL = {'default': 'ead.models.resource.Resource'} where 'ead' is
our app.

(In the past we have managed to compile python programs but the technician
involved cannot now be contacted and I do not know what has changed.)

Thanks, Lucy

[Arches] Compiling .py programs

2016-11-06 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hi everyone,

This is a basic technical question which I am asking as a not particularly
technical person.

We are customising Arches and are changing forms.py because we have added
new nodes to the Heritage Resource graph.
I have copied forms.py from the Arches HIP directory, changed it and put it
into our custom directory. I opened Arches and found that the changes had
not taken effect and noticed that a .pyc file had not been created in the
custom directory. I assume that the .pyc file in the HIP directory is being
read instead? (It is still there). I have tried stopping and restarting our
server and still the .pyc file fails to be created. The file resource.py
has been changed as suggested by the Arches documentation to pick up the
correct version of 'forms' (*from arches_hip.models import forms *has been
changed to *import forms*) and is also located in the custom directory.
What is the mechanism that causes the .pyc file to be created? I was
wondering if it was a permission/ownership problem. All our Arches programs
are owned by Root. is this normal in an Arches installation?

Thank you very much for your help.

[Arches] Updating resource graph with new nodes problems

2016-06-27 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
We are adding new nodes to our already customised database and have hit a
problem. I do not have the error reports to hand. But I just wanted to check
whether anyone else knows whether you need to do anything special if you wish
to delete two modes and put in new ones. We have updated both the nodes and
edges file, simply by overwriting the names of the old names with the new ones
thus using the same ID's for new nodes. We then run the reload database command
and get the error which suggests that a key is duplicated.
I assumed that the whole database structure is dropped and then recreated from
this common so old Arches ref numbers would be irrelevant but perhaps not?
Thank you very much for any help

2016-06-26 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Dear Andrea, Adam, Alexei et al,

We, the Egyptian Archaeological Database project team, will also be
implementing an Arabic versdion of our Arches iteration. I have followed
this technical discussion but it still isn't totally clear how to install
a second language in Arches. I know everyone is very busy, but we would be
eternally grateful (this means a lot to Egyptologists!!) if one of you
could write a short document outlining the technical steps necessary to
install a second language in Arches. Are there any particular problems
associated with Arabic being a second language? Cheers and thank you very
much indeed!

Hi all,

In order to fix the visualisation of the already selected branches, I
have tried to modify models/entity.py, particularly the get_nodes method,
since it is that which calls the labels of concepts already stored in the
database (see here for the modified method:
https://github.com/azerbini/eamena2/blob/app/models/entity.py).
Currently, I am only trying to get get_nodes() to retrieve the right
prefLabels, so I am not modifying the data, just displaying it via print
statements. I have had to perform a UUID validation of entity.value in
order to stop get_preflabels_from_valueid from attempting to run on
entity.value when the latter is a Polygon type. When I modify a form, on
POST submission, all seems to work fine. Here are some of the outputs I
get
on the server:

[Arches] Images and other files for Heritage Resource Group.E27

Hi all,

We see that there is no 'Images and Files' menu option to upload files to a

a question of adding this menu option (and associated programming) to the
navigation bar for the .E27? Are there any technical complications?

[Arches] Adding domains to a 'name' entity

2016-05-10 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hi all,

We are experiencing some programming difficulty with a customization, that
I thought would be easy. We wish to add a domain, a drop down list to
ADMINISTRATIVE_SUBDIVISION.E48 instead of allowing the user to input a free
form name. The .E48 is linked with ADMINISTRATIVE_SUBDIVISION_TYPE.E55. We
would only have one value in this subtypes authority file. In the
ENTITY_X-ADOC file the .E48 would be linked with the .E32 authority
document. In theory is it possible to do this? We realize we cannot add any
more

We tried this but it did not appear to work (but could have been simply
some programming bugs) so we created a new type.E55 node and update that
node instead. However for various reasons this is not working and it does
mean that the .E48 node is not being updated at all. I would prefer to go
back to our first idea but will it work? It is not a standard Arches way of
proceeding.

Thank you for any help,
Lucy

[Arches] Problems with uploading image files

2016-04-11 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hi all,

I saw some posts a while back on problems with uploading images but cannot
find them, so I'm sorry if the answers have already been given. I have 3
errors:

1. I tried uploading a JPEG image in the resource input screen, (and in
edit mode) and got this error: "decoder JPEG not available", when saving to
the database.

2. I also tried uploading a PNG image and got a different error: a Value
error: "wrong number of lut entries", when saving to the database.

3. I also tried using the Information Resource input to upload a file and
immediately got an error when simply selecting the 'file upload' button
after putting in some details on the resource summary screen. When I went
directly to the 'upload file' button, (without putting in details I was
able to upload an image but then got the same 'decoder JPEG not available'
error when trying to save.
(I think this error has already been reported)

I've added the error reports here.

Any help appreciated, thank you.

Lucy

Re: [Arches] NameTypes Question

2016-03-24 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hello,
We have had exactly the same problem with non primary names becoming the name
of the resource and showing on the map. I had thought that as name types are
user generated, there was no programming to ensure that the primary name was
always shown. We found that the first name to be input is the one shown on the
map and used as the resource name. We just worked around it by always inputting
the primary name first. But, I recently discovered that if you go back in and
edit the resource to add further alternative names, again, the first name you
input in the edit session becomes the name of the resource and on the map. This
definitely needs fixing as the workaround would be too cumbersome.

Thank you,
Lucy

Alison,

Indeed, thank you for the update, v4 looks very promising. Could you tell
me whether the enhanced security with different security profiles will also
deal with being able to restrict sensitive data for a site such as the
location coordinates to certain users? This is a suggested enhancement on
Github. This would be very useful for certain newly discovered Egyptian
archaeological sites because as soon as the coordinates are publicized they
are looted and damaged.

Thank you, Lucy

[Arches] Re: Creating .Arches files

Hi Adam,

I have now thoroughly read the documentation on .Arches file and have
played around with the Microsoft query and have a much better idea of what
I need to do, so there is no need to answer some of the questions I asked
below!

It seems that you either need to do a lot of manipulation of the excel file
or a lot of copy and pasting in the .Arches file which will then be
enormous even for our modest database!

[Arches] Re: Creating .Arches files

2016-02-14 Thread 'Lucy FJ' via Arches Project
Hi Adam,

Finally I am back testing out creating an .Arches file (but I am not able
to load them yet and see the results) and I do have further questions about
adding alternative names and several resource classifications.

Just to be clear that I understood you correctly, the group ID keeps
records that are related within a heritage resource together, and the
resource ID ensures that all data for a particular resource is kept
together? Therefore, each alternative name/nametype would have a separate
Group ID from the preferred name/nametype, but the same Resource ID?

Secondly, I am not very familiar with Microsoft query, but it seems that
the original Excel file for creating the query from, can only have one
'row' per record or archaeological site in our case. So as you suggested,
we would need to put in a new column for each alternative name we have and
for each site type classification and of course modify the query to add
more statements for the extra names etc. I am looking for a method of
reading the Excel file in the way we have set up with all the alternative
name being in *one* column, as it would be more efficient for us -
sometimes we have 10 alternative names but I don't think Microsoft Query
can handle this.

I don't know if you have any further thoughts on this or know how others
have handles this.
Thank you very much for your help, which is always appreciated!

[Arches] Re: Concepts not loaded

2016-02-07 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi James,

I had the exact same problem and so did some other users. The controlled
vocabulary, concepts, you are looking for is supplied by Arches in sample
authority files but they are stored as sample data and are not
automatically loaded on installation. There are some 50 files in total and
they are not particularly generic, the concepts are loosely based on those
used for the Historic LA project. Most users find that it is easier to
customize these files and load them into the system instead of using the
RDM, but it depends on how substantial your changes are. I found it best to
load the sample authority files (controlled vocabulary) so I could play
with Arches, to understand better how the concept hierarchies worked. Then
I also made changes through the RDM which helped further my understanding.
But I found that making the changes I needed through the RDM (I am making
an inventory of Egyptian archaeological sites) was time consuming so I
customized the authority files and started loading them. The installation
documentation for Arches HIP explains how to edit these files.

If you would like to load the sample files, you should try these steps as
given to me by another user:

The sample authority files should be here:

./ENV/lib/python2.7/site-packages/arches_hip/source_
data/sample_data/concepts/sample_authority_files/

In order to make them available for your Project you need to copy them to
the location specified in the variable CONCEPT_SCHEME_LOCATIONS in your
settings.py :

In my case:

CONCEPT_SCHEME_LOCATIONS = (
# Put strings here, like "/home/data/authority_files" or
"C:/data/authority_files".
# Always use forward slashes, even on Windows.
# Don't forget to use absolute paths, not relative paths.

#'absolute/path/to/authority_files',
os.path.normpath(os.path.join(PACKAGE_ROOT, 'source_data', 'concepts',
'authority_files')),
)

My project is called defc_site_2_224 and was located under
/opt/arches3/Projects - so the above setting actually points to the
following path:
'/opt/arches3/Projects/defc_site_2_224/defc_site_2_224/source_data/concepts/
authority_files'

As stated above you can put the authority files *wherever you want* as long
as you write the correct path into settings.py

When your authority files are in the location you specified in the
settings.py place you best re-install arches with :

python manage.py packages -o install

I hope this is successful. Please also check the Cat Moody thread on this
forum as she had the same problem. I am sure more technical people than
will also provide help if this does not work.

[Arches] Adding concepts to drop down lists through authority document load

2016-01-25 Thread Lucy FJ
We have created new authority documents for new nodes and they are loading
correctly and appearing in the concepts list but not in the drop down section
of the RDM and therefore not in the input forms. We have used 'index' as the
concept type and in every respect they look like the standard authority
documents such as cultural period whose concepts do appear in the dropdown
lists. What are we missing and what do we need to do?

Thank you, Lucy

Re: [Arches] Diacriticals in authority and .Arches files problems

2016-01-24 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi Koen,

Thank you for this information. I did tryout some of the suggestions on
Google for using Excel to create UTF-8 files, because I like using Excel
and know it well, but I have tried some and they are over complicated and
produce a CVS file in UTF-BOM format which I believe will not work in
Arches. It looks like I will need to download the Openoffice version as you
suggest. Must all files loading into Arches be UTF-8 only?

[Arches] Diacriticals in authority and .Arches files problems

2016-01-20 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi all,
We have been loading customised authority files and have noticed that Arches
rejects words with diacriticals (accents etc). This is not a problem for us as
we were happy to remove them and if we really want them we can enter then
through the RDM. But will this problem occur when loading resource data through
.arches? We need to input place names as alternative names using diacriticals
and it would be much easier if we can do this via .arches files. We know we can
input them using the resource data manager but obviously when dealing with
about 3000 entries,,this is time consuming.
Any ideas?
Lucy

RE: [Arches] Re: Standards and adding subsets of Cultural Period

2016-01-20 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi Phil and all,

I answered Phil personally on this one forgetting I had put it on the forum. I
am answering here in case it is of help to other users.
The ability to create hierarchies of concepts is a very powerful feature in
Arches and one we would have liked to use for cultural period on our Egyptian
sites inventory but our problem is that we have about 15 cultural periods, 31+
dynasties and 188 rulers and these are only the important ones! This would
create an enormous drop down list which is confusing to users and difficult to
manipulate. I know it can be searched but the rulers names are similar and you
would need to check you had the correct dynasty etc so for the sake of user
friendliness we are going to try the separate input fields and authority files
approach. We hope to restrict the drop down list of dynasties to those relevant
to the cultural period etc.

[Arches] Re: IMPLEMENTATION CONSIDERATIONS–-A LIST

2015-12-30 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi Alison and Adam,

I hope you have enjoyed/are enjoying the festive season!

This is a very useful document to have - thank you, Adam - and as we are
just about a reinstall the latest release of Arches and make
customizations, (and remove our test data) I just wish to clarify the order
of events when customizing Arches. The document states that:
*Changes to the resource graphs will require a database reinstall, and
possibly new controlled vocabularies, so this effort should be made at the
beginning of the installation process.*
Does this mean we must update the graphs before reinstalling the new
release of Arches, or of Arches HIP, or before inputting any heritage
resource data?

Thank you very much for clarifying.

[Arches] Map Extent Query/Problem

2015-12-16 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi everybody,

I have a question about map extent. I am not sure exactly what it is used
for.
I assumed that this would limit the view of the map to the area of your
project's interest, in our case Egypt. I calculated the coordinates for
maximum and minimum northern, southern , eastern and western points and
used the conversion tool given in the Arches installation instructions to
convert to the Mercator projection, to show only ancient Egypt, which
includes part of modern northern Sudan, but not modern Libya. However, my
map includes modern Libya, the southern Mediterranean and most of Saudi
Arabia! Is this correct?

This is not really a problem. But we do have a problem with trying to zoom
into two sites on the Red Sea, the eastern limit of our 'extent'. I have
circled them on the attached png. When we attempt to zoom in, the map moves
west and we are not able to move east to find our sites. because the map
appears to 'jump' away from the sites when trying to move the map east.
This also happens to sites at the southern limit but not at the western
limit or northern limit.

Has anybody else found this problem? Any suggestions. I have recalculated
our extent points several times.

Thank you and best wishes for the festive season and Happy New Year!

Lucy

We would be very interested in knowing how to do this too. In fact, I
thought this had already been planned as a function of Arches?

Thank you very much Angela, for raising the issue and thank you for Adam,

[Arches] Cannot delete a concept when no longer being used by a resource

2015-11-24 Thread Lucy FJ

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone else has found this problem: I entered some heritage
resources using the Resource data manager which used some concepts that
were in the sample authority files. I then deleted these heritage resources
and tried to delete the concept that I had previously input (in order to
put our own in). But the RDM would not let me, stating that 'the concept is
being used by one or more heritage resources'. But when searching for them,
they definitely do not exist on the database. Likewise, I had created some
'types' for the External cross Reference and would now like to delete these
and enter them to a more appropriate part of the database. But despite,
removing the references from all the heritage resources using these types,
I cannot delete the concept.

Any suggestions?

Thank you, Lucy

Re: [Arches] Re: Authority Files and Mandatory Input Fields

2015-11-24 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi Adam,

Thank you for your reply. On consideration, we don't wish to completely
change the structure of the database, but we do wish to add new data fields
(nodes and edges) and change some labels on the input forms.

I do have a question on keeping to standards. On the Heritage Resource E18
graph, Place, E53 has a branch to 'Administrative Sub division.E48' which
has an 'Administrative_Subdivision_Type E.55 and a corresponding authority
file. We would like to put in Egyptian Governorates as our only
administrative sub division and have a drop down list of those
governorates. Can we simply use the 'Administrative_Subdivision_Type.E55'
for the list of Governorates, and remove the 'name' box on the form? It
seems that this is bending the rules. Alternatively, do we need to remove
the' Administrative Subdivision Type E55' and simply relate a mew authoirty
file containing the governorates to the Administrative Subdivision.E48 node?

Thank you very much, Lucy
.

[Arches] Re: Possible Errors in Resources Data manager input forms (Heritage input)

I have answered point one myself. It does seem to be possible to change the
name used by Arches for a heritage resource simply by deleting them and
inputting the gain in the correct order, but it doesn't always work!

[Arches] Possible Errors in Resources Data manager input forms (Heritage input)

2015-11-15 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi all,

1. I would like to report a possible error in the Resources data manager,
heritage resource input form, Site summary section:

Firstly, when you input the resource name you have to enter the primary
name first and then other names in that order for the primary name to be
used as the name of the resource and for the primary name to appear on the
map. Is this correct? I believe in older versions of Arches, the primary
name had a special meaning and would be always be used as the name of the
resource.
Secondly, if you forget to enter the names in this order and try later to
edit the resource to correct it, you must delete the resource and start
again, it is not possible to simply delete the names and input again
putting the primary one first. This does seem to make sense as I can see
that the resource name would be difficult to simply amend. Is this how
Arches is supposed to work?

2. Location: when inputting the location, by adding geometry to the map,
it is not possible to view the longitude/latitude so it is impossible to
locate a place correctly. I realize that most users will enter the
coordinates in batch mode or by using the .gpx file but it might be useful
to have that information there.

3. Description:the text box for inputting the description only appears if I
have set up 3 description types, these can be any, I believe. We only need
one type, and it seems strange that you need to put in three. Also, when I
copy the text from an Excel file, it is not possible to reformat the text,
so it appears just as it is in the file, a narrow, long entry.

Thank you, Lucy

Re: [Arches] Database Error

2015-11-15 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi Alexei and all,

I just want to report that Soumaia fixed this problem and we are now able
to put a place on the map. She did all that was suggested above and used
the Postgis 2.0 version instead of postgis 2.1, but it still did not work
so she looked up the error in google and came across similar problems in
other django applications. The answer was to install one line of code in
the settings.py files in our custom database directory:

DATABASES['default']['ENGINE'] = 'django.contrib.gis.db.backends.postgis

I hope this may be of use to other users.

Lucy

coordinates and border points. Then I have run python manage.py
runserver,
but that made no changes on the website.

I wonder if registering a key on bing maps is a must that the website
will not respond to our map new settings without it.
Also, we have checked editing the location of one of the historic
resources and we received the below error. Any suggestions? Thanks

[Arches] Thank you to the Arches developers

2015-11-15 Thread Lucy FJ

Hi all,

We made a breakthrough in our Egyptian database project last week (see
other post under database error), which meant that we can start loading
test data and I was able to show Arches to Dr. Weeks who is very happy with
it. We still have a long way to go and I will be asking lots more questions
but we can see the way forward now. So thank you much to the development
team for producing such a useful and well thought out product!

Lucy

2015-11-15 Thread Lucy FJ
HI Adam,

Sorry for this late thank you but we made a breakthrough in our Arches
project last week (see separate post) and I was showing the project to my
manager.
Your answer is helpful but I am still not sure about authority files that
we will not be using. if we change the files themselves as you suggest
prior to installation, should we simply delete the information in the
authority files we are not using or not load them?

Thank you,
Lucy

[Arches] Authority Files and Mandatory Input Fields

2015-10-28 Thread Lucy FJ
Hello all,

I have two unrelated questions:

1. I have modified several authority files through the Reference Data
Manager and would like to see these modified versions in the database but
we cannot find them. Where do they reside?

2. There are many input fields (boxes) on the input forms that we do not
need but they appear to be mandatory. We have loaded up the sample
reference data. Is there a simple way to makes these fields optional
without needing to change the program? i.e. I am looking for a user method
of being able to ignore these fields.

Thank you very much for any help,

Lucy

[Arches] RDM: Confusion Between Heritage (Historic) Resource and Resource Classification Authority files

2015-10-28 Thread Lucy FJ

Dear All,

I thought I'd start a new topic on this so as not to be confused with the
other question I raised and has now been resolved.

I am only using the Reference DM to change the authority files because I
am a user and we don't have a full time IT staff member assigned to our
project yet so can't change the files directly.
I used the Arches HIP sample files as a basis and added our concepts for
the heritage resource type and deleted the sample ones. I did the same for
the resource classification types. I then added the appropriate concepts to
the drop down lists for each. When I tried inputting a resource using the
Resource Data manager, I found that the resource classification drop down
list was where I expected the heritage resource list and vice versa. The
concepts were the ones I had input. I have checked, double checked and
triple checked my inputs and they are correct.
I am attaching copies of the screen shots.

Has anyone come across this problem before?

Thank you for any help on this issue!

Lucy

[Arches] Heritage Resource and heritage Resource Group Authority Files confusion

2015-10-27 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi all,

I have been successfully inputting our own authority files through the RDM
but then came across a strange problem: the heritage *group* type seems to
be confused with the heritage* resource* type. On checking the
documentation, the appendices showing each resource graph, I found the same
thing:
Under the graph:* Heritage Resource E18*, exists Heritage_Resource
*_group_Type*_Authority Document.E32 but under the graph:*
Heritage Resource Group. E27* exists *Heritage_Resource_Type_Au*
thority_Document.E32

Surely these should be the other way round? Is the documentation confused,
the actual installation confused or am I confused?

Many thanks for your help,

Lucy

[Arches] BING Services key

2015-10-27 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi everyone,

Here on the Egypt database project we are slowly moving forward. I have a
question about BING services. In the 'settings' section of the installation
documentation, 'read the docs', it is suggested that we sign up with BING
services and obtain a key. What does this actually do? Can Arches run
without the Bing key? Can we show sites on the map with out this? Are there
any alternatives? Unfortunately neither I nor anyone in our IT department
have previous experience in geocoding.

Thank you for your time,

Lucy

[Arches] Inputting Point Coordinates in Arches 3 and some other basic questions

2015-10-07 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi everyone,

I have spent a couple of days exploring our brand new Arches 3 installation
which we will be using for an inventory of Egyptian archaeological sites
and I have some very basic questions to ask, and would be very grateful for
any advice:

1. Resource manager: this allows me to input a 'historic resource',
'historic district', etc. I was expecting to see the more generic term
'Cultural Resource' and preferably be able to select 'Archaeological
Resource'. Are these the default input forms or are there others? Are the
input forms for 'historic resource' the same as for 'archaeological
resource' in Arches 3?

2. Inputting point coordinates: We will be inputting our data from scratch
(our data is presently in MS Excel) and we have point coordinates for each
archaeological site and I was rather hoping that we would be able to input
the point coordinates into the location section of the input form but it
seems that we can either find the point on the map, which is very time
consuming and inaccurate (in fact I do not see any coordinates at the
bottom of the map to aid in locating the position, as previous versions of
Arches had, so we would not know where to place the point) or load a gmx,
kml or geojson file. I have looked into gmx files and found some open
source software that will create such a file. Do we need to create a
separate file for each resource? As we only have latitude and longitude, no
elevation, which format is the most suitable for our use? How have other
users dealt with this problem?

3. Historic District: Perhaps the archaeological resource input forms are
different but we would like to use the group feature to input a very
extensive site such as the Pyramids of Giza. For instance to input Giza as
an 'archaeological zone' and relate each separate pyramid, temple and other
structure to it to show it clearly as a group. When I look at 'Historic
District' I don't see an obvious way of grouping these resources. Do we
simply use the 'related resources' section to relate each separate site to
the 'zone'? How have other users handled this?

4. Historic resource Type and Classification type: again perhaps this is a
function of having the wrong input forms but we anticipated inputting an
archaeological resource type (eg. temple, fortification, cemetery etc)
associated with each cultural period (in our case, 'Old Kingdom', 'Roman'
etc) so I do not know why there there seems to be an overall historic type
and a classification type. As most of our sites are multi use over several
centuries, we cannot describe them with one resource type. How have others
dealt with this?

I'm sorry to ask such basic questions but any help would be gratefully
received!

Lucy

[Arches] Python language

2015-02-18 Thread Lucy FJ

Hi everyone,

I understand that Arches is written using Python. If we need to customize
Arches to suit our database (we mostly need to add some new data fields and
amend the reports), we would need a Python programmer. We may not have
anyone familiar with Python in our IT department. Are there any similar
languages to Python? Can you add code in a different language that would
work with Python?

Thank you for your help,
Lucy

[Arches] Re: Using Search in Arches V3

2015-01-21 Thread Lucy FJ

Thank you very much, Dennis.

I have another question on searching for names with letters that have
diacritical marks above them, like the umlaut (sp?) in German.
Transliterations of Arabic names of Egyptian historical sites should use
diacritical marks and apostrophes e.g.

*Ma‛ādī, Al, *so we would like to input this as the primary name. Would a
search under the more usual western form *'Maadi, Al*' find this name, or
would we need to input 'Maadi, Al' as a name variant? I have tried this in
Google and it seems to be able to find the name with diacriticals sometimes
but not always. These are different Hex/ UTF character codes so it may not
work.

Thank you, Lucy

[Arches] Using Search in Arches V3

2015-01-12 Thread Lucy FJ

I have a question about using the search function in Release 3, which may
be daft but I just wanted to check.
I understand from the Information Session in Cyprus in November that the
search function is going to be as similar to Google as possible. Does this
mean, for example that if I enter the resource site name * Abu Hawr *in the
search field it will pick up the site with the primary name* 'Abu Hawr
(with the apostrophe at the beginning,) *or would we need to add a resource
alternative name *Abu Hawr. *

Also have our database initially into Excel which enables us to input
special characters which are not on a regular keyboard. When inputting into
Arches, presumably we can only copy and paste these names unless we have
the appropriate keyboard or will the new UI enable special characters to be
input?

Thank you.

Thank you very much, Dennis and Alison.

We are now considering preparing our server for installing Arches on it.
The Installation manual for Release 2 gives the system dependencies and
requirements for installing it. Are these dependencies and requirements the
same for Release 3?

Arches can be installed on Linus or Windows. Can you say which is a better
environment?

Thank you very much,

Re: [Arches] coordinate format used in Arches

2014-12-02 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi Adam,

I have a further question on the coordinates format in Arches.
In Version 3 Arches, I understand we will be able to input our own
coordinates, will these coordinates also need to be input in the order
longitude, Latitude?

Thank you very much.

[Arches] Re: Signing in

2014-11-30 Thread Lucy FJ
Hi everyone,

I am working for the Theban Mapping project and we are going to adopt
Arches version 3 for a database of all archaeological sites and monuments
in Egypt.
I have an Archaeology degree and have worked with commercial software as a
project manager/analyst and also have website design experience.
I am working in New Cairo, Egypt on the Campus of the American University
in Cairo. This is a very beautiful, new campus in the desert some 20 miles
from downtown Cairo.
I would like to say that I can see the Great Pyramids from my window but I
cannot. However, I can see some beautiful modern Islamic architecture, palm
trees and lots of sand!
