[arr] Opinion on Rising and Ah Aah
Personally I find Rising songs to have more soul than Ah Aah!!! Reasons: a) You can feel the effort gone into each and every song, unlike Ah Aah numbers (which i think would have been done by ARR's arrangers - Pravin maybe..) b) I think once in a while ARR and his team are allowed :) to come up with music which has genX appeal - maynot be musically great or would lack melody etc.. the recall won't be there..but then its for GenX as I said earlier. E.g. Boys (good songs!!) vs. KalaiDinnamum / Hum hai iss pal.. you know given a choice which one you'd want to listen to any day.. :) The key differentiator I guess is the target audience..of the two movie's songs...it is segmented and positioned well. However..the Rising songs are something which will be always linger The Rising high points: 1. Sukhwinder stands out!!! more than Kher- he scores on the dha na na na alaap 2. Dekho Aayi Holi - what a number:really brings out the joy of the festival..!! I think we are going to see this number used more often in dance sequences, singing contests etc.. Udit sounds simply great.. so does srini.. 3. Takkey Takkey - will potentially become a children fav - just like ye taara, wo taara.. 4. Mangal (aatma) : Halla Bol!! I can guess this will be the song of the movie...as in the song which has the best picturisation in the movie. The above and many more are just my opinion!! Please do not take it in any other way.. Hi Guyz Gurlz, Wellto tell u the truth...even i felt very disappointed ,like any genuine fan wud have felt, when I heard AH...AAH.. Thought I dont mind getting the original... Its too techytoo much of sounds...with the lyrics getting bogged.. Pretty unsual ARR stuff... Especially after hearing classy album like Rising...couldnt digest this...And the worst part is I am forcing myself to hear it again and againit isnt inviting me...!! (really feeling embarrassed) Rahman is the pioneer tio bring in this kinda techno stuff to India..but now there are lotsa MD to do these stuff..remix kind.. And Rahman himself has quoted thatSo why shud he be working on these.. Rahman is classy...He should be doing something in the range of Kaadhal desam or Kadhal Virus (techy numbers).. Sorry, not a meeting, but just in case people are travelling into London on Saturday, could you all be aware that the Metropolitan Line and Jubilee Line - which stop at Wembley Park - may be out of action all weekend. The Bakerloo Line and overland lines to Wembley Central are working, but last trains into London are around 11.30pm. Much as I'd love ARR to over-run on any other occasion, I hope he doesn't on Saturday or some of us wil miss the end. Safe journeys, everyone. I will wait for GF bcos it seems to be a serious movie. But not sure how tamil directors will bring the movie. I urge to the group GF (If its a remake of english GF) pls dont expect more on songs but U will hear wonders in BGM. here once again it depends on Ravikumar (RGV failed to get good BGM in SARKAR). But at the same I feel if someone cannot pronounce common Tamil words, it is better to send them to learn the dam language basics then fulfill their quest to sing Tamil songs. Let me warn heads up, I am not a language fanatic; after hearing the track I felt Tamil language has compromised in various places. The major stock holder in a song is the lyrics; lyrics have to be communicated across using clean pronunciation. A good lyric can be thrown to doll drums due to awkward pronunciations. With due respect to her singing talent, my patience ran out for the lady vocals in this track. A. R Rahman has introduced many Tamil singers who are good in Tamil pronunciations. Hence I feel there is no need for him to stick with non Tamil speaking singers. Apart from that, another nose dive was the violin parts, cliché strings all over the song. The string placements made the song close to a stage devotional song. This was followed by a song sung by Chitra and Hariharan, The track sounded too techno and mechanical. But songs gets litter save mint from the melody lines and vocals Drum pattern was robotic especially in the charam. The bass parts were non-Rahmanish and sounded programmed via plug-in. Next track, Thigu Thigu opens with a Radio/Phone EQ setting, but soon it becomes cluttered with random VST synths and their beat patterns. Sadhana Sargam's voice is as sweet as it gets. Her pronunciation is manageable. Blaaze does backing vocals and tries to sing hard Tamil words. Blaze needs to work more on ல௠ல ள௠ள sounds,he has done enough songs in tamil to understand the difference. Mixing a Techno groove and a Tabla seems too dragging to me. Maramkothiye sung by Shankar Mahadevan, Shalini, Vasundara Das, Blaaze has some color. But once again beats are kind of sliced and totally electronic. Mr. Harmony Where are you? [arr] Re: Chennai Meet - Great Feel
Hi, Thanks a bunch to all of you who turned up for the meeting, and made it a grand success. For a start, it was good. really good. And lets make this a regular event, once every month. I will just brief you some points which linger in my mind about the meet. (This also conains thoughts expressed by Bhaskar) First of all this was the maiden ARR fans meet at Chennai. Umpteen attempts at having a meeting of Chennai Rahmaniacs never materialised. And finally we made it happen. The response was so good. 11 fans met at the Anna Tower at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday (23rd July 2005). All those who turned in will never forget the evening atleast for quite some time, for sure. We also discussed on our plans for meeting Rahman personally and also showing our presence for the 3D Concert, and also for Netru Indru Naalai concert. Oh, I am hindi speaking so do not get to listen tamil music,nor to see tamil film here. I have heard of Iruvar, having vennilaa by Asha shot on Aishat the backdrop of Taj mahal, but I was not aware ofstoryline that it was a period song.I wonder why Mani did nod dub the movie/ music for hindi audience. It was based on the Karunanidhi - MGR political rivalry somewhere in the 1960's . So the storyline was very situational to TN. It also has a foreign actor Toby Stephens, as it's a period film based on the historic mutiny of Indian Soldiers in 1857. Producers Bobby Bedi - Deepa Sahi along with her director husband Ketan Mehta, have ensured the movie looks enormously affluent as well as authentic with elaborate costumes and opulent sets that match the era. However, this also means the music must carry the film's historic flavor and must have been difficult to comprehend how the music was, nearly a hundred and fifty years back. For a movie of such high magnitude, anything less than the music maestro A.R. Rahman and the veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar, would have been undeserved. Kailash Kher makes an extremely impressive start with Mangal Mangal, the title track that has the pace, incite and intensity that evokes a strong undercurrent of patriotism, especially when audio visualized. Yet, this is just the beginning, as the track has been composed thrice with Kailash Kher being a constant and precisely, he does have the voice that conveys the rage, agony and might of a phenomenon called Mangal Pandey. The track is essentially a theme song of the movie where the other two tracks are called Agni and Aatma. While the Agni version is analogous to the original with some additional brisk and vigor, the Aatma version is tenacious and persistent with Sukhwinder Singh adding some heart and soul into this vehement sonata of patriotism. After the rumbling Mangal Mangal comes the soothing Main Vari Vari. Kavita Krishnamurthy, who is undoubtedly one of the best and most versatile voices of Indian Cinema, croons this one along with Reena Bhardwaj (wife of music director Vishal Bharadwaj) with utmost conviction and is spot on with every emotion, like always. Only the likes of Rahman can do justice to the velvety and divine vocals of both these extremely gifted singers that are still under-exploited. Although, the track does not have a remarkably great tune, being a Rahman classic, it will incontestably grow on its listeners at a pace they would never know and Javed Akhtar's significant words chanted by Kavita will do the rest. The ancient Holi celebrations get underway with Holi Re where Mr. Perfect himself takes to the mike and once again delivers a flawless piece of perfection. While Aamir Khan restricts himself to the swift poetic verse, Udit Narayan, Madhusree, Srinivas and Chinmaye do the actual singing. Rich with varied vocals that sound authentically pleasant, the track is the entire music crew's humble and sincere effort that does not take long to bag the predilection of its audiences too. The album only gets folksier with a mystical track Rasiya that has the music talking to your senses. Not all, but a few intense music lovers might find this exciting, as they plunge deeper into this unusual symphony of sagacity with Richa Sharma, Bomnie Chakraborty. The opening Shehnai pieces of Takey Takey will remind you of Saiyaan from Rahman but the track quickly swerves to exclusivity as Sukhwinder Singh, Kailash Kher, Kartick Das Baul along with a cluster of kids in chorus execute this one with bracing rapidity. The track should inherently thrive on Javed Akhtar's satirical vocabulary followed by Rahman's spry composition that makes an entertaining listening. A cry of help from the almighty with words richer than the normal comes in its pure Islamic form in Al Maddath Maula. A.R. Rahman along with Kailash Kher, Murtaza and Kadir collaborate in finely tuned accord for this solemn track that may not have a great auditory value, but would serve a very important purpose in the movie itself. The two masters of music come together for creating the music of this great Indian saga of patriotism. Considering the film will not give those regular situational liberties and the music has to harmonize with the film's flavor and style, Javed Akhtar for one has given more than hundred percent. I am all for not downloading the songs and all but the point about Desam. I believe it did not do so well not because of the downloading but to the fact that it was not given any publicity. Plus, I don't hear any of these songs on the airwaves, not the mention the movie in tamil. Many a trick up his sleeve Going by the adulation of his fans during the audio release of Ah Aah the other day, S J Suryah has indeed come some way. The 'New' generation director-turned-actor has been coming out with his bagful of tricks to give the younger generation some mouthful palatable offering. Suryah's directorial abilities were conspicuous in Vaali followed by Kushi. When he took to acting, there were misgivings regarding his unconventional looks. But he used the sentimental factor to a profitable tune and struck an instant rapport with the masses. Busy in giving shape to his latest Ah Aah, due to hit the theatres in August, Suryah entered into a freewheeling chat. Q: Tell us on Ah Aah? A: It's a beautiful love story which I came across in my life. Every youth would have had that experience. The movie unwinds the interesting happenings in a youth's life. Now that Simran has moved over to Delhi, you have the Delhiite (Nila) to fill in the breach. With A R Rahman's music, did not have to look elsewhere for inspiration. Q: How important is a title for a movie? A: It's as essential as pallavi for a song, like one's initials. When there were protests to change the title of BF, I carefully chose an alternative by urging my fans to pick one. Thus BF became Ah Aah. Q: Is glamour an essential ingredient in today's genre of movies? A: Glamour is part of our life. Life is meaningless sans glamour. When it sells, there is nothing wrong. Q: How was it to combine acting and directing besides producing New? A: A great experience, never deeming it a burden. Enjoyed shooting every frame of it, everything going off smoothly. Also a great learning experience. Q: Assess yourself as an actor? A: Hopefully, did justice to the character - a lot trickier than what I had imagined. Having penned the script, was confident to bring out the right emotions. The director in me was comfortable with the hero (laughs!). Even in my next film Kalvanin Kadhali, I simply do what my director demands me to perform on screen. Q: On your comfort level with A R Rahman? A: He is a great music composer. It is always a pleasure to work with him. Quite typical to New, he has come out with six scintillating numbers for Ah Aah. He is an ocean and directors have to swim deep to get what they want. Q: Does the Tamil industry wear a healthy look today? A: You can say that again. Movies are doing well at the box office. There is a beeline of talented youngsters. Here is an interview with producer Kevin Wallace. http://www.playbill.com/news/article/94231.html From the interview, I will list out the musically relevant points There is indeed a score and songs, but don't expect a soaring ballad of love, or comedy patter numbers from the Hobbits of Middle Earth you will not hear You're Getting to be a Hobbit With Me. However, music might rise organically from situations. For example, Arwen sings a lullaby to ailing Frodo, or the Hobbits croon a folk-like traveling song to pass the time and raise their spirits. Wallace also indicated that Gollum has a virtuoso solo number that is very unusual, Gimli sings a wonderful, haunting 'ancient' lament. And Galadriel has a magnificent musical number in Lothlòrien. One of the really exciting aspects of the score is how voices are used as part of the orchestration. This has been inspired by the three Värttinä singers' Finnish vocal tradition. Producer Wallace said there will even be a cast album of the work, expected to be recorded after the show opens in March 2006. Yes, a live orchestra is part of the theatre experience, as well. Rick Fox will conduct. There is non-stop music. The action sequences are like mini-symphonies. Helm's Deep is a fantastic number with some great percussion inspired by Indian and mid-European musical traditions, and The Last Battle will be extraordinary. Our Hobbits have a distinctive musical tradition that is very catchy and a lot of fun. There are 14 music numbers in the show as well as other wonderful action sequences that are instrumental musical sequences in their own right such as the Flight to the Ford and Gandalf's confrontation with The Balrog.
