2005-10-23 Thread Roshan

really surprise! i think he is really studying AR rahman. musically
and other wise. even the way he praise AR Rahman sounds very much
like the way AR Rahman used say about other MDs

it is good, in a way, that atleast he is trying to learn something!
haha.. after all these two decades, for the first time he talked some
sense.. "AR Rahman is a true genius"

I hope, now anu malik can go back and sleep peacefully by getting all
the guilt feeling off the chest, for condemning and bad-mouthing about
our boss in the past years!

Hi everyone,

I was wondering whether there is any place where I could download
Indian music legally. I know that iTunes and Sony have their music
stores online, but there aren't any Indian songs there. Is there any
such website?

Hi Srinivasa,

Try using this software for ripping... http://www.castudio.org/dvdaudioextractor
Choose Ogg Vorbis 5.1 surround for output...

After ripping play the tracks in Foobar2000 audio player...get it from here http://www.foobar2000.org/foobar2000_special.exe

Let me know if it works or not...

[arr] Dil Se BGM request

2005-10-23 Thread Srivathsan
Hi! Folks,

I've tried in a myriad places for Dil Se BGm and finally got
hold of this one site "www.uyirvani.com" which has a wonderful and
almost exhaustive collection of Our King's BGMs.

But In the "Dil Se" BGM, they are missing the most emphatic
theme, the one that plays atleast twice in the movie, first when
Manisha Koirala leaves him in the desert and he wakes up the next
morning and reads her message in the sand;
the second time in the end when Manisha is about to leave for her
final assignment out of the old building and sees Shahrukh as she
comes out.

The music has Sukhwinder Singh in a very high pitch singing something
like "Kinare ke aage jahaan aur bhi hai".

There is one such piece in the uyirvani BGM list for Dil Se but is
much smaller and lower volume. In the scenes that I have described
above, the music is much more prominent and louder.

I request the great Rahmaniacs to please offer some help and find me
that piece.

Just another Rahmaniac,
Srivathsan

the print that gets authored on to a DVD is the one that's finally

During this process, there is a 4.166% increase in speed of the entire
film. Increase in speed = a high pitch. Most of the audio guys, pitch
the track down by 4.166% before slapping it onto film once again. But I
guess that must have not been the case if you're hearing a higher
pitched ARR.

Bunty Aur Bubli DVD was also reuined by not re-pitching the track to
the original scale. Every dialogue and song in the film is high
pitched. Udit et al sounded damn funny :)

[arr] Re: Between Heaven and Earth Review

2005-10-23 Thread Roshan
He might be a person who enjoys only western music.

I have read a lots of reviews from international websites and all were
really hailing about the good music

for me, i love every track of the album except the english version of
Warriors in peace.

I think, sunita saradhy's voice really doesnt seems to be much
appealing in the english version.

but the rest of the tracks, for me, are true gems!

listen to the monk and the miracle! what a great composition! at
1:53, it gives me a same feeling of Kitaro's Silk Road Theme. really
awesome. but defenitly, Monk and the miracle stands out!!

this is my favorite track from the album

Executive Producer: Paul Cremo.
A&R Manager: Alison Riach.  Art Direcftion and Design by Chris Austopchuck and Detchapat Arttasan. Recorde on June 13-20, 2003 at Sahara Sound Ltd.; London: Rudolfinum & Sono Studios; Prague: Panchathan Record-Inn, Chenn. Sony Classical SK 92494 Rating: ***1/2 After all the media attention given to Rahman, I was expecting something really spectacular on this CD. In a recent article in TIME Magazine (3 May 2004), Allah Rakha Rahman [his name at birth was: A.S. Dileep Kumar] is called "The Mozart of Madras."  That is such foolishness!  It is simply unfair to compare this young Indian composer to one of the greatest classical music geniuses of all time.  They come from totally different backgrounds and traditions.  But Rahman is probably more popular than Mozart today, at least in Bombay and other South Asian locations.  At only 38, his music has sold more than 40
million units worldwide. Thanks to the encouragement of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, who called him "a melodic genius," Rahman wrote a musical titled BOMBAY DREAMS, his first Western theatrical success which has run for several years in London.   For this first CD using symphonic orchestra and ethnic instruments, Rahman has drawn from his score to the Chinese film, WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH. This is an album of both delights and disappointments.  It features a combination of Western and Asian styles, using traditional orchestra and ethnic instruments.  This isn't the first time such a combination has been employed.  Tan Dun did it successfully in CROCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, and so did Zhao Jiping in his Electric Shadows compilation. The music on BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH provides enough to keep things moving along, if not always leading to enthralling listening.  Many of the
tracks don't allow for much expansion of ideas.   "The Golden Era" (3:56), starts off very nicely with a solo flute playing a flavorful ethnic theme, followed by the orchestra and wordless chorus.  It's a good beginning to the CD. The next track has the song that Rahman wrote for the WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH soundtrack. The song is titled "Warriors in Peace" and is recorded in both a Hindi version (track 2, 4:45) and English version (track 15, 4:31). I didn't care much for the song, but it may interest those who want to have alternate versions. The whispery voice at the beginning of the song makes it even less appealing. No song lyrics are provided in the CD flyer. This is unfortunate since it is difficult to understand what is being sung.  At least the English lyrics would have been helpful. On this collection there are a wide diversity of forces used by Rahman.
One is chant, as heard on "Lord An's Empire" (track 3, 3:31). The singers are accompanied by drums and percussion and the constant repetition may seem pleasing or not depending on your interest in this sort of world music.  I didn't find it very memorable.   Another technique is the use of a solo instrument to introduce the theme.  This is so on the track titled "Water" (track 4, 3:52), featuring the mesmerizing solo music of the duduk.  I've always been drawn to the sounds of lower instruments. For me, this track is very expressive.  I believe it's the best one on the CD. After this highly emotional music, the next track sinks into overblown rhythmic tedium.  It's titled "Horses" (2:27), and features wordless chorus and drums, and unfortunately reminded me a bit of James Horner's less than stellar music. What does the title represent? The connection between the titles and the music
are not explained in the CD flyer. Next comes a beautiful track titled, "Mountains" (1:49), featuring solo flute and orchestra. Such a shame it's so brief. As already mentioned, this CD alternates between Western and Eastern styles. Besides the good ones already mentioned, there are also "Blue Light" and "The Monk and the Miracle" (tracks 10-11).  These offer more soothing sounds and have much to savor and enjoy.  There is also a track taken from the Chinese film (track 14, 4:27) which

2005-10-23 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
WOHE is the movie. The soundtrack released in China and South East Asia had 14
tracks. The
soundtrack released in India had 15, minus Warriors in Peace in Mandarin, plus
in English and
Hindi. This 15 track version was recast as a non-film album, BHAE, for the
western markets.
They are identical.

show `Bombay Dreams' with regards to a possibility of engaging the
Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) on a project for the new film he
is composing the music for. Mr Rahman showed a lot of interest in the
SPO having heard selected numbers sent to him by the general director
of the SPO Mr Emir Nuhanovic. The project will entail engagement of the
SPO for a number of days and all rehearsals will be performed in
Sarajevo. The talks will resume in April and the scheduled dates will
be further discussed

Bangalore Bias is a weekly local tabloid. They carried a report

Oct. The tabloid sized layout was too big for my scanner's scan bed, so
I have captured the pages ona camera. Admittedly, its of poor quality as I

Dheemi Dheemi...ok here's what I see and feelfreshness in the air, early
morning dawn, chilly and misty, of course birds chirping...add two in love
and it's enough to make a nice music video. :) Looking forward to your
poem.

some days back after the concert, i was listening to the WOHE album and i
had written this to my friend.

well... i have to sheepishly admit that i never listened to "warriors
of heaven and earth" soundtrack well enough..
all this time. i always considered ARR a genius. but this album seems
to elevate him far beyond that "genius" status as well... i dont
know..
i m just speechless. to have been able to compose this kind of music
that is so much intune with native chinese musical traditions... that
really gives us an image of china and mongolia... is above brilliance,
intelligence and genius... i dont know what to call him now...

an "elementary" reproduction of feelings that i had when listening
to the album

"blue light" - ethereal as the name suggests... same chorus
towards the end as that of "horses"
"buddhas remains" -- it makes you feel a great awakening inside
you..
fills you with a feeling like the soul being stirred... maybe fill with
buddha's spirit!
"horses" - awesome chorus, i just kept on listening to it on a
forever loop
"lai chi theme" gives a huge power surge deep inside..
"monk" - close ur eyes... and u would really see monks sitting
atop
rocky ledges and meditating in the thin mountain air.. reminds me of a
NatGeo program about Monastries of Wudang Mountain
"escape" -- makes you imagine people really running away, hiding
from
prying eyes, just managing things in the nick of time.. u know.. all
the fast camera stuff!
"mountains" -- if i had been listening to this song while driving
up
into the shenandoah (mountains in virginia state), the songs would have
absolutely fit the occasion
"dacoit duel" -- i m spellbound.. i can really see 2 men baying
for
each other's blood, measuring each others paces and making lethal
advances

& now.. which one of these was the theme song? and what is the song
ordering... i would like to listen to these songs in proper sequence..
i think "blue light" precedes "horses" because of the
tune match. i
might be wrong...

i kinda didnt appreciate that jolin tsai's song. considering the above,
this pop song faded below my recognition and so was that
"lords..."
song.

I wonder how Roger Hall wrote that review. Maybe he is a good reviewer
for western sounds. Unfortunately, he seems to be prejudiced towards
that half of the world alone. I somehow felt that he exhitbited more of
contempt than respect. Had he really delved deeper into sounds and the
space that they provided and the relation of the songs to the movie, I
do not think he would have written such an insensitive review. Take
nothing... just sample the "Monk" song. If you have seen the
program on
monks at Wudang Mountains telecast on Nat Geo channel, you will fully
agree how well the song picturises monks meditating upon various truths
of life.

There is another one such song by Yanni called "After The
Sunrise".
Great visual appeal. Close your eyes and you can really imagine the sun
rising from the horizon and casting its golden rays upon the land. I
remember the "monk" song and the above song in the same breath.
Both
were instrumental. For vocal, take "Dheemi Dheemi" sung by
Hariharan in
the movie "1947 Earth". ARR is the MD for that movie. Close your
eyes
and listen to this song, and tell me what it reminds you of. Infact I
was so inspired by the song that I wrote a poem on what I felt after
listening to this song. Maybe I would share it some other time

RE: [arr] Unearthed some GEMS

2005-10-23 Thread Dasun Abeysekera
Agree completely, Ajit. I haven't heard enough discussions about the ESK
title song, which is one of my favorites, Chitra's voice just melts my heart
...it's so beautiful, with the electric piano giving the effect of a man
breathing in and out while watching a mystical beauty. Haven't seen the
movie, but this is what I felt the song is trying to say.

Ale Ale from Boyz is another gem...Karthik's voice is amazing and as many
had pointed out how ARR uses the chorus and Chitra (can't be the same Chitra
who sings ESK title, correct?) to sing counterpoint is very unique...nothing
western about that counterpoint. Virtually two melodies running in
parrallel, but works amazingly well.

I still haven't heard the E18U20 songs, so cannot comment on them.

Hail ARR!

I've been paying more attention to Rahman's Tamil songs recently and I
re-discovered three recent songs that didn't hit me before, but for
some reason, are totally into me now.  They are "Ale Ale" from

Boys, "En Swasa Katre" the title song, and "Yedho Yedho"
from Ennaku
20...Unnaku 18.  Simply classic.  I realize that I there are some
songs of Rahman's I should revisit

I need to get back to digging...

Rating: ***1/2

After all the media attention given to Rahman, I was expecting
something really spectacular on this CD.

In a recent article in TIME Magazine (3 May 2004), Allah Rakha Rahman
[his name at birth was: A.S. Dileep Kumar] is called "The Mozart of
Madras." That is such foolishness! It is simply unfair to compare
this young Indian composer to one of the greatest classical music
geniuses of all time. They come from totally different backgrounds
and traditions. But Rahman is probably more popular than Mozart
today, at least in Bombay and other South Asian locations. At only
38, his music has sold more than 40 million units worldwide. Thanks
to the encouragement of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, who called him "a
melodic genius," Rahman wrote a musical titled BOMBAY DREAMS, his
first Western theatrical success which has run for several years in
London.

For this first CD using symphonic orchestra and ethnic instruments,
Rahman has drawn from his score to the Chinese film, WARRIORS OF
HEAVEN AND EARTH.

This is an album of both delights and disappointments. It features a
combination of Western and Asian styles, using traditional orchestra
and ethnic instruments. This isn't the first time such a combination
has been employed. Tan Dun did it successfully in CROCHING TIGER,
HIDDEN DRAGON, and so did Zhao Jiping in his Electric Shadows
compilation.

The music on BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH provides enough to keep things
moving along, if not always leading to enthralling listening. Many
of the tracks don't allow for much expansion of ideas.

"The Golden Era" (3:56), starts off very nicely with a solo flute
playing a flavorful ethnic theme, followed by the orchestra and
wordless chorus. It's a good beginning to the CD.

The next track has the song that Rahman wrote for the WARRIORS OF
HEAVEN AND EARTH soundtrack. The song is titled "Warriors in Peace"
and is recorded in both a Hindi version (track 2, 4:45) and English
version (track 15, 4:31). I didn't care much for the song, but it may
interest those who want to have alternate versions. The whispery
voice at the beginning of the song makes it even less appealing. No
song lyrics are provided in the CD flyer. This is unfortunate since
it is difficult to understand what is being sung. At least the
English lyrics would have been helpful.

On this collection there are a wide diversity of forces used by
Rahman. One is chant, as heard on "Lord An's Empire" (track 3,
3:31). The singers are accompanied by drums and percussion and the
constant repetition may seem pleasing or not depending on your
interest in this sort of world music. I didn't find it very
memorable.

Another technique is the use of a solo instrument to introduce the
theme. This is so on the track titled "Water" (track 4, 3:52),
featuring the mesmerizing solo music of the duduk. I've always been
drawn to the sounds of lower instruments. For me, this track is very
expressive. I believe it's the best one on the CD.

After this highly emotional music, the next track sinks into
overblown rhythmic tedium. It's titled "Horses" (2:27), and features
wordless chorus and drums, and unfortunately reminded me a bit of
James Horner's less than stellar music. What does the title
represent? The connection between the titles and the music are not
explained in the CD flyer.

Next comes a beautiful track titled, "Mountains" (1:49), featuring
solo flute and orchestra. Such a shame it's so brief.

As already mentioned, this CD alternates between Western and Eastern
styles. Besides the good ones already mentioned, there are also "Blue
Light" and "The Monk and the Miracle" (tracks 10-11). These offer
more soothing sounds and have much to savor and enjoy. There is also
a track taken from the Chinese film (track 14, 4:27) which is a nice
addition.

Two tracks highlighting Chinese instruments, "Dacoit Duel" and "Lai
Chi" (tracks 7-8) were not to my liking b

Hello everyone,

I am a Doctoral student in the Dept of Media &
Cultural Studies at the
Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison. For my doctoral
dissertation, I am
conducting research on the convergence between Indian
cinema and the
Internet - to make this large topic manageable, I am
focusing on film
music in particular.

One of the key areas I am examining is the emergence
of online fan
communities. As a fan of ARR, I felt this was an ideal
group of people
whose insights would be of tremendous value.

Specifically, I am interested in learning about the
history of online
fan activity, social interactions between fans in
different parts of
the world, the relationship that fan communities have
with the media
industry, and relationship with artists.

I would greatly appreciate an opportunity to meet and
discuss these
issues with you. I have talked about this research
with our moderator,
Gopal and also attended the fan meeting that took
place this afternoon
in Bangalore. Over the next 2 months, I will also
travel to Chennai,
Hyderabad and Mumbai to talk to fans based there.

I would greatly appreciate it if I could speak with as
many fans based
in India as possible. I look forward to hearing from
you, and meeting
you in person. Please let me know what number I can
reach you at, and
what times work best for you.

Please reply to me at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

best regards,
Aswin.
