hey Paarthi Sorry to dissapoint you friend.I am a kannadiga and i have a lot of north Indian friends. Hi , This is Sunil. I am new to this group. I totally agree with you . i stay in MUMBAI but basically from KARNATAKA and I have observed the same here. I am a huge fan of AR Rahman and have listened to all his Tamil, Hindi as well as Telugu songs though I don't understand Tamil and Telugu. All I cansay is that those who do not listen to AR Rahman songs are missing out on some very soulful music. We must just pity them for this. Hi all, i was just browsing through the streets of trivandrum on 18th and i had asked one of the main shops in trivandrum for the audio cassette for water and they told me only rdb was released and that water was not yet released. but then i walked past these vendors who were selling on the street and they were sellin mp3 of latest hindi songs and when i browsed through the names of the films rdb and water was also included. anyway the cd was priced at rs 30 and i bought it and browsed through it and all the songs of rdb and water were there but i am not so sure abt the water songs bcoz i havent heard them bfo0re and i also dont know the song list from bfore. can anybody ppls confirm the song list here were the songs in the cd i bought 1.aayo re sakhi 2.bangri marori 3.naina neer bahai 4.piya hoi 5.sham rang mei 6.vaishnava jan ho Yahoo! Anyway, lyrics in any language have never been able to do justice to music of ARR. As disturbing as hindi speaking people not listening to good tamil stuff is tamil speaking people listening to sub-standard hindi and sub-standard tamil stuff of hindi quality. 90% of my tamil as well as non-tamil music loving friends still believe in one or more of the following: 1) ARR is a genius but only in copying. He copies and mixes from diverse sources in such a way that nobody comes to know. (How do 'they' know is a question that never got answered). 2) Its not ARR but his computer that composes the music for him. (What stops other MDs from acquiring such a machine?). 3) ARR is strong in harmony and mixing and no match with certain other MDs in melody. (I have never been able to understand from where these people picked up words like melody and harmony). Coming more to the point, as a Hindi speaking north-indian, I consider not understanding tamil a boon as that way I can concentrate 100% on and only on the music without being distracted by the words or their meanings. I gave up listening to hindi songs and most other forms of music (except Tamil, Indian classical and certain folk) after May Madham 12 years back and dont regret the decision. Also, I have a cute little personal interpretation for most of ARRs music based only on music, which always got muddied if I tried to understand the lyrics or even look at the videos of the songs. One incident: When I was new to ARR, I once thought of understanding the contents of lyrics after listening to a song containing traces of a raaga of monsoon season. Song was Missa Missalade Missandam - Gangmaster (Telegu). I gave the task to a telegu friend who, not being interested in the homework, passed on the cassette to his mother. The project never got completed and his mother was dismayed at the kind of company her son kept. I guess the song probably contained some rotten vulgar lyrics. I dont know and dont want to know. The changes in tamil Music Scenario can be best understood by considering how the old song "thottal poo malarum" from Padakoatti has"changed" itself to the new song in the movie NEW.These changes in tamil music were initiated by A.R.Rahman. By implementing the various changes that have been happening in musical world due to the advent of computers in his music, he creates a sensation of floating as if in a dream!!!Rahman has a good music background. His grandfather used to perform "Katha Kalatchepam" (A story narration kind of thing which is filled with songs). His father was a music director for Malayalam Movies.The sudden death of his father forced him to drop his schooling. Rahman began his music career as a keyboard player for MS Viswanathan and Ilayaraja mainly to support his family.Rahman was composing for Advertisements when he got the first opportunity to compose for a movie in 1992. His first film Roja created history and formed a new trend and Rahman won the national award for his very first film.Right from that time, till now, Rahman has been the numero uno in tamil film music. Next part is about the Rahman who started in Tamil, is the leading music director in Hindi films too. The sales of CDs of albums like Lagaan, Taal and Rangeela touched crores. Film producer AVM Saravanan says that "It is Rahman's ability to provide International Quality music, which has attributed to his huge success".Though there is a complaint that he takes lots of time to compose music, most of the albums composed by him have been extremely successful. Rahman who is the master at modern and western music has also done beautiful Village based movies like Karuthamma and Kizhakku Cheemaiyile..Producer Sampath Kumar (Anyone knows who this guy is?) says "Rahman's music is like tender-coconut-water and butter-milk packaged using modern technique in a tetra pack!!" Ms. Mehta, please take a bow. You have consistently provided your audiences with cinema of the utmost quality, never once sacrificing your creative genius to appease the forces opposing your goals. Moreover, movies like Fire, 1947-Earth, Bollywood/Hollywood--and now Water--established your prowess as a raconteur and expressed your versatility. That Water is not an Indian movie is a fact of shame for the Indian Film Industry. The sign of a true democratic and progressive society is the freedom to scrutinize, critique and condemn those customs and traditions that inhibit the development of equality and assimilation of a civilization. Clearly, India has a long way to go. What´s ironic about the film is that it is the year´s best Hindi-language movie (movies like Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi, Black, and My Brother Nikhil were predominantly in English); aside from its subject matter, language, and cast, the movie is anything but Indian--even two of the leads are non-Indian. What´s more, Water is banned in the very nation it attempts to help. Congratulations for making Water the first non-English or non-French- language movie to open the Toronto International Film Festival, which is an immense achievement given Canada´s cultural politics. Congratulations for making such a brilliant movie that it was voted one of the top ten movies in Canada for 2005. Congratulations for being one of the rare Canadian movies to cross the $1 Million mark. Congratulations and thank you. Ms. Mehta brings us into the world of those girls and women unfortunate enough to have become widows before India´s independence. Our eyes and ears are those of Chuihya (Sarala), a seven-year-old widow sent to live in an ashram for widows. She encounters the vile head of the widows, Madhumati (Manorma), who exploits the residents. Shakuntala (Seema Biswas) is the only force that occasionally opposes Madhumati´s tyranny. Kalyani (Lisa Ray) is the beautiful young widow who befriends Chuhiya--she is also pimped by Madhumati and the eunuch Gulabi (Raghuveer Yadav). Ironically, she sent to work by crossing the Ganges. Narayan (John Abraham) is a follower of Gandhi who falls in love with Kalyani, regardless of her status as a widow. Throughout Water, Mehta exposes the cruelties of Hinduism against widows. Chuhiya, in her ignorance, asks all the right questions like Hum apne ghar kab jaayenge? or Aadmi vidhwaah kahan jaate hain? It is not that Mehta is rejecting Hinduism as a respectable religion. She is merely raising the right questions--she is striving to empower those with the means to help those widows who, till this day, suffer in the same conditions described in the film. No religion is perfect. Each one has a dark past. Hinduism is no different. Whether these injustices are innate to the religion or a by-product of chauvinistic interpretation, one thing is clear: unleashing and relinquishing one of the skeletons in Hinduism´s closet will only enhance the quality of the religion. We are very good, as different nations and different cultures, to have a collective amnesia about our own [problems] [Water] is about three women trying to break that cycle and trying to find dignity, and trying to get rid of the yoke of oppression, and if it inspires people to do something in their own culture, that´s what´s important. (Deepa Mehta, as told to the CBC). Considered as a film, rather than a baggage of controversy (says Mehta herself), Water is superior. The screenplay is crisp and tight. There are not miscellaneous sub plots that divert from the prevailing theme, which is always a bonus. No action completely overt, which makes the experience even more fulfilling. Moreover, the dialogue is engaging, especially those lines in which Narayan deciphers the need for a custom that sentences widows to lives of degradation. Thankfully, the movie is not preachy but speaks volumes on the issue it addresses. Mychael Danna´s background score is outstanding. A.R. Rahman has composed the Hindi songs in the film. The music blends into the scenes instead of overpowering them like in Mangal Pandey. The cinematography is perfect. The sets are accurately recreated in the picturesque locals of Sri Lanka; special mention goes to the design of the ashram. Direction is, as always, amazing. As a storyteller, Mehta is focused and obviously inspired and passionate. Scenes seem right out of life and she incorporates appropriate light moments well. Lisa Ray is a complete revelation. Her Hindi has improved leaps and bounds. Not only does she look stunning, but she is convincing as the prostituted widow trained to be submissive. Her self-imposed exile from Bollywood is sad, as one wonders how many movies Deepa Mehta can make to keep this talented actress in the limelight--there is minimal scope for actresses of Indian origin in Canada and Hollywood. Tunes recycled - A young chaps another view ;-)hi i m here again to think worse. this old chaps matter is confusing me. most peopleput slogans be indian buy indian but not for them and for others. we are interested, inspired taste lives by the way most of thewesterners do but definitely most of us take the positives and not copy the westerners in negatives.this is the greatest thing about us indians. why? most are inspired by foreign system in education job so rushing to abroad. most of the inventions we use in our lives are given by foreigners. we dont feel low to use them instead so proud comfortable and still wanting more for it. so according to that old chap, ARR should use only tanpur, mridang, tabla, sitar, veena, flute. He copies and mixes from diverse sources in such a way that nobody comes to know. (How do 'they' know is a question that never got answered). 2) Its not ARR but his computer that composes the music for him. (What stops other MDs from acquiring such a machine?). 3) ARR is strong in harmony and mixing and no match with certain other MDs in melody. (I have never been able to understand from where these people picked up words like melody and harmony). Coming more to the point, as a Hindi speaking north-indian, I consider not understanding tamil a boon as that way I can concentrate 100% on and only on the music without being distracted by the words or their meanings. I gave up listening to hindi songs and most other forms of music (except Tamil, Indian classical and certain folk) after May Madham 12 years back and dont regret the decision. Also, I have a cute little personal interpretation for most of ARRs music based only on music, which always got muddied if I tried to understand the lyrics or even look at the videos of the songs. One incident: When I was new to ARR, I once thought of understanding the contents of lyrics after listening to a song containing traces of a raaga of monsoon season. Song was Missa Missalade Missandam - Gangmaster (Telegu). I gave the task to a telegu friend who, not being interested in the homework, passed on the cassette to his mother. The project never got completed and his mother was dismayed at the kind of company her son kept. I guess the song probably contained some rotten vulgar lyrics. I dont know and dont want to know. Hey Boss is very tech freak. He must be writing a blog. Anybody know such blog? If there is no such blog, we should encourage BOSS to start a blog. We knew that BOSS is a busy man, he must not getting time to do such things, But if he write a post once in a month, it would be a great thing. This could be a revolution in India. In US many celebrities have their blogs. Why not Rahman have one? Even Amir Khan wrote blog for the movie Mangal Pandey on MSN, It was a official blog announced by MSN.I hope A.
