hi world 'what great words man absolutely right' dhyan says "we are worth nothing" and arya & u supports his view. We (our friends) pity u all. Say, 'u are worth nothing' and dont include everyone as " We ". Why u under estimate ur talents. Have self-confidence in u. a true rahmaniac should never lose spirit and doubt abt their own abilities. we may not shine & excel like ARR. But everyone has talents and hidden in persons who have not yet realised about themselves. Whatever u do constructively everyday for ur future is worth more and is enough to reach a stage in life to earn & lead a comfortable life with peace. thats what everyone wanted and aiming for. the results depend on one's hard input. and even after hardwork, if one does not gets his due, make ur mind more positive to accept what comes in, despite ur efforts and leave it to god
as it is god given. and dont look around others' achievements blindly as only to lose urselves like u what told now 'u are worth nothing'. there is happiness in life in each & every thing and it all accounts how we view and accept things with a tolerance, patience & maturity. i m happy today for i m able to lookafter myself not depending on others and also keeping my family happy. on the whole my family is happy & contented and we never felt like we are worth nothing, as we could not achieve high. the more u work hard the more u will be rewarded. and above all it is god's pre-planned arrangement on one's destiny. the guy up knows whom to give what and is giving accordingly and for that, it does not mean HE has let u down. HE never lets u down even u let HIM down. i have seen many examples about pple realising late about HIS creations & coming to terms to accept life in their own way at later
stages. I preferred to ignore this too, but considering Vinayakam has mentioned 
this, I second him. ARR's success rate, at least within my taste in 
music, is more than 90%. And thats huge, so I buy his stuff with no 
preview and usually on the day of launch. I dont do it for any other 
composer. That doesnt mean I cannot like some of his tracks and may be 
share it here in this forum. Someone might like Parotta for all you 
know, even if Vinayakam and I hate it :-)

The reason I am in this forum is because the bulk of the songs I listen to regularly and like are by ARR. Ofcourse you get biased towards buying his music without a preview but that doesn't automatically make it good music.

  Equally I would like to know how songs like Takke Takke passed over by  the QC process when there is huge standard which has been set by him,  and see whether other fans can suggest and identify the bad ones  without bias.<< when we say gud songs and worst songs...we need  to think abt one thing...its not a pvt album..its a movie and songs are  made according to situations,rite?...so according to me...a song will  only be as good as the situation and how the director conveys the  situation to ARR..and yea...there are many passable songs from him..and  also sum very very HQ stuff..even those passable are not that bad  ones...(even parasuram has sum great songs...)...and one more  thing...be4 listening...as we all are Rahmaniacs..we'll make up our  mind ..like...ok this is by ARR and this must be gud..and if thats our 
 mindset..i think most of us will like almost all his songs :-)  sorry if my answer is not satisfyin   cheers,  sree.

Wanted to ignore this but couldn't resist. Being a fan doesn't mean that I like everything what Rahman dishes out. I like almost 80% of his output and that is the highest ever amongs all my favourite music directors. He is only the composer whose CD I would buy without a preview but that doesn't take away from the fact there has been "not so happenning" songs. After all he is only human. In fact that is a fact that endears him even more.
I listen to both his Hindi and Tamil songs. I haven't disliked any of his Hindi songs except for the dubbed lyrics (I know he has no control over that but it takes away from the overall appeal of the song). Also the pronunciation in some of the songs like "Dhakka laga" (Yuva) was pretty awful. Otherwise he has been superlative in Hindi. In Tamil, there are quite a few which didn't touch me

Hi,

I have posted video footages and the photos at the following url:

The video footage is shaky but its worth the download just for the audio.

I spoke to one of the student organizer after the show. It apppears
they have recorded the complete show. I will try to get the complete
coverage.

The person who interviewed Rahman at the show (Natalie) has a Ph.D in
EthnoMusic. She has studied bollywood music in great detail. I spoke
to her after the show. She mentioned that she is a silent member of
the egroups. We had a brief but interesting conversation about Rahman. 

I asked her if she is going to write a book on Rahman. She said that
she is planning to study Rahman's music in detail (her current
research is about bollywood music) and that she might publish
something (Natalie please confirm if you are reading this).

There were other interesting tidbits, some of them were already
covered by other people who attended the show (I couldnt meet all of
them). I will post the remaining tomorrow.

Anil,

It is being a Rahman fan that prompted me to ask this query. I was
seeing whether we blindly accept even bad songs as good songs just
bcoz it has come from ARR, or we rationally identify the bad song.
Usually a typical good composition from ARR is a result of extreme
hardwork as repeated listenings of some of the best songs suggest.
Huge amount of time and effort is usually put under for monumental
Songs like RDB, Duet , Thiruda Thiruda etc. 

Equally I would like to know how songs like Takke Takke passed over by
the QC process when there is huge standard which has been set by him,
and see whether other fans can suggest and identify the bad ones
without bias.

Rahman mentioned in his Q&A @ Stanford that he sneeks in to check 
fan mail. He mentioned this egroup 'arrahmanfans' 

Here are some excerpts from yesterday's event at Stanford. I will 
post more as I remember.. below is some starters!

1. During the audience QnA, a lady demanded that ARR gets married. 
She said no matter how much you achieve, life is not complete 
without marrying and she would like to be a matchmaker.. The crowd 
was in splits.. ARR was sheepishly laughing as he replied that his 
wife would kill him.. and he said he was married with 3 wonderful 
kids and the lady walked back, obviously embarassed

2. ARR mentioned that some MDs he liked from the current crop are 
Vishal, Ismail Darbar. He mentioned Rahat (Fateh Ali Khan?) whose 
album has stormed up the charts. He said his all time favorite is RD 
Burman. 

3. ARR mentioned he listens to a lil bit of U2/Eminem et al.. Dint 
divulge much on his preference for western rock/pop/jazz bands. 

4. ARR was super modest (as is his classic reputation); he was a man 
of his words when he reminded the audience that he had committed to 
singing a song for us. Now comes the best part - ARR sang DilSe.. 
and after 3 lines continued to sing Dil to pagal hai na.. and again 
with his characteristic laugh said he was not prepared to sing and 
has forgotten but just wanted to keep the promise he had made 
earlier that hed sing.. THAT ONE STATEMENT WAS SOMETHING.. ALL 
HONESTY, MODESTY.. It was spiritual.. 

5. He spooke of his association with Mani Ratnam.. About his 
forthcoming movies, Guru, Sivaji, Jodha Akbar.. When the interviewer 
asked him about Sholay's ramake and about couple of othe rmovies, he 
said the directors hadnt approached him :-) 

6. He said that Lukka Chuppi was a current favorite. He had to chase 
Lata for 3 months. 

7. Chaiyyan Chaiyyan story was inetresting - I think someone already 
wrote about it

8. He praised Salman Ahamd (who was in the crowd) for their 
wonderful music (Saiyoni / Junoon)

The most interesting question from the audience or of the evening in 
my opinion - "ARR - It seems like you have mastered your career 
management - how do you do it and where do you go from here?" and 
here is a reply that humbled me - laughing as he spoke, visible 
amused by the question "I must admit that I am very happy with my 
career graph - I have done nothing to actively manage it. I am very 
content with what I have. Spiritualism and God have helped me a lot. 
Spritualism came to my rescue. I always have surrounded myself with 
good people and prayers." 

Reg 'Conference of Birds' - ARR mentioned that it was commissioned 
by the Brimingham Orchestra. Its proving to be a great learning 
experience and he said it may be ready as soon as 1 year or maybe 
even 5 years.

best of my memory.

[arr] How ARR handles pronunciations?

This is a query about lyrics writers interactions with ARR.

When ARR gets a lyrics for any song, the lyrics writer must 
be giving it in written form and they must be having some 
discussion about the lyrics.

As ARR is not that comfortable in Hindi (and, I think, even 
less comfortable in Urdu) pronunciation, how does he handle 
the complex pronunciations of Hindu/ Urdu words.

Previously, there were urdu veteran MDs like Naushad who 
knew every nuance of urdu/ hindi pronunciation, but, in case 
of ARR, he must be depending on the clarification given by 
the lyrics writer, and on the knowledge of singer about how 
to pronounce a word.

So, could someone please elaborate how ARR learns about 
pronunciation of hindi/ urdu words?

Is lyrics writer physically present in studio when the 
singers are singing the song?

Is it lyrics writer who teaches the correct pronunciations 
to the singers, or does lyrics writer tells ARR and then ARR 
tells the singers?

i belive its called LOOP!! i also dunno how many times many have 
explained these,but there r some people keeps on repeating the 
stuffhaaai...if u noticed,ARR have used it in Jaane Bahara - DNJAK 
too!! anywayz...1 more thing is more interesting, listen to the Uuu aa 
aah in the interview...that song sounds exactly like an IR song which 
i cant remember its tittle...but anywayz y attack on ARR only when 
we have enjoyed trash from other mds...its like we r expecting PERFECT 
from ARRwhic is def not healthy...enjoy the music for what it 
is !!!

What a nice way to rub it in! by the way it is NOT copied. the tune is 
completely original. The only thing that is similiar is the beat of 
the song. and this beat is used by many MDs, ARR used it in

Add Absynth to the software listI could hear it for sure in
Kannathil Muthamittal title song, I wanna be free and Dhuan dhuan...an
I think the flute sounding interludes in Anarkali and Ennuyir Thozihey
sound like Absynth to me..or atleast could be synthesized on Absynth..

I went and heard the new Kaatril song on kmmusiq.com...the rhythm part
is a preset from Motif ESOther motif candidates I can say for sure
are the intro sound from Vellai Pookal (atleast inspired from Motif)
and the intro sound in Do Kadam (meenaxi).

OMG GUYS, the music is just mindblowing, i am out of words! Seriously: 
when i listened to katril, i was just frozen, the melody and the 
interludes just spell bounding and then when i listened to deepavali, 
i was taken back to the 90s. The first hearing of this song wasnt that 
great, and the second was better but after that guys, something struck 
me: HE IS BACK! Waiting for the rest, by the way everyone please buy 
the original song, plz. Its ok to listen online and infact download, 
but just make sure you buy the orignal CD. AR Rahman deserves this, it 
is the only way we can pay back for this amazing work. Just amazing!

Do the videos posted at kmmusiq.com have 4% PAL speedup?  Someone at
TFMpage.com posted mp3s ripped from the videos, which I slowed down 4%
in WavePad and they, which leads me to believe so.  But I can't tell
for sure.

hey rahmaniacs,
this clip and the effort behind it is entirely different to tamil movie industry. various personalities speaking abt ARR... superb feel...
have u guys noted the the words "An A R Rahman Music" spreading simultaneously with the drop of water? simply superb.
there is a song "innisai alapadayae" . its lyrics are related to tamil grammar. it is a carnatic song. in simple words to describe the songs - AWESOME the interlude is completely mesmerising...
also, the sad song sung by the genius himself is completely transcending. other songs were equally good. especially the initial rap. it's great.
ANYHOW, the pick of the album "so far" is "KAATRIL OAR VAARTHAI MITHANTHU VARA KANDAEN". fantastic melody. the melody immediately enters into u and u start humming it the next time. very fresh tune...

guys believe me... the tunes sound very fresh and enriching. song picturisation seems to be appealing. totally an awesome album. cant wait to get the CD.

[arr] Rahman at Stanford

Hi all,

Just wanted to give the fans group a quick email on the Rahman event
at Stanford Univ last night.

Overall, the event was a disappointment since some odd Stanford
professor spent the first 45 minutes discussing Rahman's music giving
no special insights whatsoever. Her questions to Rahman were also
boring to say the least. The audience questions were repeats of
questions he has answered a million times "whats your favorite song?"
 who is your musical inspiration" etc. The Q&A with Rahman lasted for
about 45 minutes.

I ofcourse was extremely thrilled to see and meet Rahman in flesh for
the first time. I even got his autograph along with Salman Ahmed's
(Junoon). 

Rahman's answers to the questions both from the mediator and the
audience revealed a lot about him. Rahman is an absolute gem of an
individual. Despite being a musical genius and a national icon, his
answers revealed humility, respect and thoughtfulness. 

Rahman seems excited about his upcoming projects including the LOTR
musical! And I, like a typical fan is hopeful that his music reaches
new heights.

hi guys first take it easy. dhyan says "we are worth nothing.& a true rahmaniac will not send such forwards like that" and arya supports his view as, both of ur posts below. We (our friends) pity u both. Say, 'u are worth nothing' and dont include everyone as " We ". Why u under estimate ur talents. Have self-confidence in u. a true rahmaniac should never lose spirit and doubt abt their own abilities. we may not shine & excel like ARR. But everyone has talents and hidden in persons who have not yet realised about themselves. Whatever u do constructively everyday for ur future is worth more and is enough to reach a stage in life to earn & lead a comfortable life with peace. thats what everyone wanted and aiming for. the results depend on one's hard input. and even after hardwork, if one does not gets his due, make ur mind more positive to accept what comes in, despite ur efforts and
leave it to god as it is god given. and dont look around others' achievements blindly as only to lose urselves like u what told now 'u are worth nothing'. there is happiness in life in each & every thing and it all accounts how we view and accept things with a tolerance, patience & maturity. i m happy today for i m able to lookafter myself not depending on others and also keeping my family happy. on the whole my family is happy & contented and we never felt like we are worth nothing, as we could not achieve high. the more u work hard the more u will be rewarded. and above all it is god's pre-planned arrangement on one's destiny. the guy up knows whom to give what and is giving accordingly and for that, it does not mean HE has let u down. HE never lets u down even u let HIM down. i have seen many examples about pple realising late about HIS creations & coming to terms to accept life in their
own way at later stages. SO DHYAN & ARYA PLSE DO BELIEVE IN URSELF FROM TODAY AND U BOTH ARE WORTH BEING REAL URSELVES AND ALSO AS ARR FANS TO THINK THAT GOD HAS PLACED U IN A POSITION TO POST UR VIEWS LEISURELY LIKE THIS. I totally agree with you, this is one of the most melodious and 
soothing composition by arr. I love the way the percussion speeds up, 
right afer the introductory lines. Both Hariharan's & Chitra's voices 
are suited perfectly for (hindi version of) this song. I think the 
original version was sung by SP, not Hariharan.?

It was a wonderful evening and a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
It was fascinating to hear about CHaiya Chaiya - how it was composed 
for Vande Mataram, then was reconceived for Saathiya and then finally 
ended up in Dil Se.

I have the whole show on tape. Hopefully will post it by the weekend.
