This is how it goes: After he sang this song for Rahman and after leaving the recording studio he felt that this song wasnt challenging at all and thought well why did Rahman give such an easy and not very exciting song to him. Maybe he didnt like him or something. And he felt a bit dissapointed. Then later after the movie and songs were released and all, Maharajan had a show in Singapore. So while in singapore one day he just had his lunch or somethgin and thought of going for a walk on the streets. While walking, there was a Barrota(Paratha) shop and the guy who was making the Barotha was hitting the dough on the surface for a tune. For every beat on the song that was playing this guy was hitting the dough on the surface. So TLM was bit curious to knwo what this song was and why is it so special that this guy whos making the Barotha is enjoying himself and forgetting the whole world around him simply listening to this song. When he went closer he realised that this was his very own song he sang and disliked which was "Nee Kattum Selai Madipilai". He was simply amazed and he went and asked the person do u like this song and all and the person had said: "this is the most amazing song of the year and a big hit and when I listen to this song I simply forget my self and my sorrows and I could make loads of Barothas without knowing that I am getting tired.. Its simply a Classic!" He said he couldnt beleive what he was hearing and finally he told the Barotha making person that he had sung this song and eventually got free Barotha and a big respect from the people in that shop. And he said I am always thankful for Rahman for giving him such an incredible song and showcased his talent for the younger generation. And this incident is an evergreen memory in his mind! Isnt this simply amazing guys! When I heard this story I was like wow! This one of those stories you hear from your Grandparents which make an everalsting effect on you. Thats how this felt. Ash, Abhi shoot scenes on vintage train The Times of India Hubli: Final touches were given for the shooting of Mani Ratnam’s film Guru, with stars Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan shooting a song sequence for the film across Banapu r- Somapur railway track, about 40 km from Hubli here on Sunday. It was virtual chaos with over a thousand people converging to have a glimpse of Ash and Abhi, who danced to the tune of the song on a moving train. People were seen waiting for the arrival of the Bollywood stars since 5 am, but they made their appearance only around 7 am, when there was enough sunshine to meet the requirements of the camera. The film unit, headed by director Mani Ratnam, was visibly upset as the shooting got delayed because of minor hiccups, sources said. The director meticulously used the steam engine, which had been hired from the Railway Museum at Delhi, for the shots. Guru, a story that revolves around the first war of Indian independence, to be released in June or July, was partly picturised in the historical backdrop of North Karnataka, while most part of the film has already been shot in North India and Turkey. Hello Durba, I think "thazhuvudhu" cannot be a comedy song. Your doubt is very valid, but its more a romantic number. Horror movies canot have songs. Agreed. But still it has lot of scope for back-ground scores and special effects. The music has to bring the audience to the edge of the seat and bring the "heart-to-mouth", which is a big challenge! Also the scope of music depends on the story line. This is true not only for Horror theme, but for any type of movie. Its simply a Classic!" [arr] Dayton, Ohio - Wake up! Benefit Concert Review
This is a quite lengthy and a little delayed, but keeping my promise... Concert was held on 04/22/06. About five months ago, my friend, Guru, saw an article about ARR being in Ohio for a concert and had insisted that we go to watch. I wasn't quite sure what this was going to be and I had seen the Global Rhythms (GR) perform Chale Chalo at the East Michigan Univ. (EMU) concert in March 2003. On first impression, honestly, I thought they were horrible! It came on top of a rather disappointing concert as well since the sound balancing and organization was very poor despite the music being excellent. I had been to a Yanni 'Ethnicity' concert for the first time just two weeks ago and came out stunned at the quality of the production. Naturally, I had high expectations of the ARR concert and was bound to compare the two concerts of my two musical heros. Maybe that is a bit unfair since Yanni is a trained showman having done such huge undertakings as the Acropolis, Taj Mahal, and the Forbidden City, and Yanni focuses on so few projects compared to ARR giving full attention to his concerts when he is on tour. And ARR with his extremely busy schedule, I don't think can afford that kind of time for his tours. So, given all that past experience, I was not expecting much of this concert although there was no way I was going to miss an opportunity of seeing ARR on stage! However, when I read the EMU - 'Wake Up!' concert reviews, my perception changed significantly and I infact looked forward to seeing this concert. Guru and I met at a nearby restaurant and had some food before we headed to the James S Trent Arena. We thought since we had tickets, it won't be difficult to get in so we went a little late only to find a huge queue outside the entrance! Guru was saying 'dude, I've never seen this many desis at a concert!' We made it in eventually and took our seats, which were like benches with no seperators. We didn't quite get our seats as people were seated all over the place. The important thing was we got some seat and didn't have to get into a fight with anybody! The arena was getting full slowly but surely but we were way past the 7:30 PM starting time. The audience was getting impatient and started whisteling and screaming for the show to start. This probably went on for another 15 minutes before the show started. The stage was nicely lit up and arranged as the GR orchestra and the choir took their positions to a rousing cheer. The drummers started with the 'Beat of Passion' from Taal which led to a rendition of 'Ramta Jogi' from Taal as well. By the end of Ramta Jogi, my expectations were high as this was not the same GR team that made a mockery out of Chale Chalo 3 years ago! This was a team that must have practiced for months if not years to sing in a language totally alien to them with such energy and enthusiasm. We were told that they had worked with an Indian girl who helped translate the meanings of these songs to the GR team. They obviously knew the general meaning of the songs, which enabled them to express with great emotional impact. After that energetic introduction, a few people came on stage to speak about the purpose of the concert and how it came into being. Sad to say, some members of the audience (sadly not limited to a handful) was very rowdy and did not have the grace or patience to listen to the introductory comments; and they kept asking for ARR in a very rude way. There was the chief sponsor (Mr. ad Mrs. Joshi) and several others on stage taking their turns who must have been really embarrassed by the behavior of the crowd. Anyway, they finally welcomed ARR and the entire house gave him a standing ovation. It was clear that he too was embarrassed at parts of the crowd who showed no respect for the organizers and said 'we have 150 people on stage singing, so please corporate' or something to that effect. It was quite unlike ARR to be that tough on an audience, but it was very obvious that he felt bad about the crowd reaction. He sang Kalbhali with sheer power and very few mistakes I must say, probably he lost cues to some verses here and there but recovered soon enough. I love the last part where the sound drops off and he ends 'Ziddi Hum bhi Yahan.' AO: Moving away to another topic, another aspect of your films I find incredibly moving is the music. The music of A.R. Rahman touches the film. I've come to associate certain technical aspects of your filmmaking, the visuals in combination with the music as a signature - I can always recognize a Mani Ratnam film! And I know a lot of people feel the same way. How do you feel the music of A.R. Rahman contributes to your films? What do you feel he brings to the film? MR: Well, I think music is really an integral part of any film and especially so for an Indian film which is in the mainstream where music is not just a background but is a content of the film. So, once you're in that format, the music becomes very important. When you start the film, you start working on the music at the start of the film. Once I decide what script, what film I'm planning to do then I start sitting with the music director right at that moment and we decide the tone we are looking for in this film - that we will go for something like "this" - so it's not something we've done before, it has to be apt for the type of film. This film, for example, is with an eight-year old child so we had two nodes with which we went - one, is how the child would think and behave, a certain amount of energy - when you picturise the songs they get transformed into today's image - children are used to computer games and things going topsy turvy - so we tried to capture that in the visual also. Similarly, we do the same thing with the music. On another plane, we look at a mother, and look at a yearning for peace. So, the music for the entire film operates within these two scales. Even when it is a torn and ravaged country; you still are playing within these two emotions. So, those kinds of parameters are what we decide upon early, and this is something that Rahman is able to understand and work very easily with. To an extent, he is fairly abstract in the way he composes, it's not very specific to a particular thing - it's an overall mood he tries to capture; sometimes you do not play on the same key - if the scene is on one key, you try to play the music on an entirely different key so that it acts as a counterpoint to the visual. So, he's able to do those things very, very well, and he brings in a certain amount of today's feel without losing the soul of the entire film.
