Re: [arr] Re: Rahman Rocks NewYork (Read this......)

2007-06-19 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Judging by what Rano and I could make of the audience reaction moving around
different parts of the venue, no one was groaning about songs in a particular
language. Sure, the Tamil crowd went berserk when Sivaji came on, but I don't
think the so-called Hindi audience minded it or vice versa when many original
Tamil numbers were performed in Hindi. It's unlikely Hari was surprised at
performing in Telugu since the same song had already been performed at two or
three earlier concerts on this tour.

Niceee, but I have learnt that it is often better to take anything
from Rediff with a pinch of salt.

As usual Rediff manages to screw things due to the seemingly rampant
incompetence of its staff and the way they let parochialism seep in,
not just into the comments section (about which they don't really have
any control), but the actual articles itself.

First, they manage to get one of the names wrong in this slide
(http://specials.rediff.com/movies/2007/jun/18sld4.htm), where they
mis-label Vijay Yesudas as Naresh Iyer.

The second grouse that I have, I don't really know who it is that
deserves the blame. A number of people that Rediff asked for
sound-bites apparently complained about the number of Tamil numbers.

Now, normally if one third of a set was in a language apart from
Hindi, I'd agree with that grouse. But it's not like we have 100
different languages to choose soundtracks from.

Another reason I might have had a chance to agree with that grouse
would be if I did not know about this group at all. From the comments
I see here about the tour in general, no one seemed to complain along
those lines. So having seeing most of the fan quotes on that article
go along that path put me off.

In fact, I'd have wanted to see more Telugu numbers (disclosure: my
knowledge of Telugu is minimal) in there. The inclusion of the one
number seemed to be an after-thought. It did NOT look stage managed,
but I thought Hariharan was slightly surprised when ARR told him that
the next song was in Telugu.

NEW YORK: Music composer and singer AR Rahman's concert here enthralled an
11,000-strong crowd, the audience swaying and dancing to popular numbers like
'Chaiyya Chaiyya'.

The concert, held over the weekend at the Nassau Coliseum, had Rahman and other
known singers, Hariharan, Sukhwinder Singh, Blaaze, Chitra and Sadhana Sargam,
in action besides drummer Sivamani and a troupe of dancers.

The star of the show was Rahman, who has become a big draw globally. Rahman
deftly mixed old and new songs composed by him, in both Hindi and Tamil. The
crowd consisting of north and south Indians in equal numbers lapped it all,
proving that his unique brand of music transcends language.
Read latest news at DNA

Other popular songs which had people in the packed stadium on their feet,
included the title song from 'Rang De Basnati', the 'Maiya Maiya' belly dancing
number from 'Guru', with sensual choreography, and 'Vaaji vaaji' from the new
Rajnikant blockbuster 'Sivaji: The Boss'.

There were songs from 'Roja', 'Lagaan' and 'Taal'.

Blaaze, wearing bermudas, sang rap numbers including 'Masti Ki Pathshala' from
'Rang De Basanti'. He tried to get the audience to participate, even walking
the aisles with video cameras trailing him. Sivamani was most ebullient during
a solo with his multiple drums.

Some song clips from movies and specially commissioned videos were shown to
effect on a huge LCD screen.

Rahman sang a couple of his own numbers like 'Dil Se', hitting the high notes
with ease. He concluded the over three-and-a-half hour musical night with
'Vande Mataram'.

The concert at the Long Island venue was part of Rahman's '3rd Dimensional
Tour' of North America. It came after shows in San Francisco, Dallas, Houston,
Chicago, Toronto and Vancouver and precedes shows in Washington and Atlanta.

After 'Bombay Dreams', Rahman has composed for another musical 'The Lord of the
Rings'.

Rahman's concert tour has been organised by Bharat Jotwani under his Poojanka
Entertainment banner. Jotwani has to his credit Shah Rukh Khan's Temptations
tour.
He is now close to inking a deal to bring Bollywood's first family, Amitabh
Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, on a North American tour next
year.

Bollywood superstar composer A.R. Rahman and his 66 dancers, singers and
musicians began their Patriot Center
concert at 8 p.m. and were still receiving enthused screams three
high-energy hours later. After Rahman wrapped up the performance at
11:20 p.m. Sunday, the crowd remained, and stayed pumped, until the
confetti fell.
All ages and entire families from the Washington
area's Indian community danced and sang along to more than 30 Rahman
hits -- and they're all hits. The 41-year-old composer-singer-
instrumentalist is one of the most important and popular artists in
modern Indian music, mixing traditional sounds with hip-hop and
dub-inflected electronica. He's a prolific genius who has scored more
than 100 Bollywood films; in 2003 the BBC reported that he's sold more than 100
million albums, and there are estimates that he has moved twice that many
cassettes.

Based on the ethnic makeup of the nearly sold-out Patriot Center
audience, not many people outside those of Indian descent have a clue
about Rahman, but that may change. He's slowly making inroads into the
non-Indian populace, having collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber
on the musical Bombay Dreams, having scored The Lord of the Rings
stage production and having his smash song Chaiyya Chaiyya open the Spike Lee
film Inside Man.
While
the slamming Chaiyya Chaiyya received the evening's largest ovation
-- and some of the audience's fiercest rump shaking -- it was just the
17th song in the set.

[arr] A.R. Rahman's laptop with 'Lord of the Rings' music missing

2007-06-19 Thread satish_srini

By Prasun Sonwalkar. London, England, 08:00 PM IST

A laptop containing new compositions of popular Indian music composer
A.R. Rahman is part of a bag that went missing when he arrived here
Monday night for the theatrical version of 'Lord of the Rings'
scheduled for Tuesday night.

Rahman arrived at the Heathrow airport from Washington after a
successful performance in the US, but was stunned to discover that one
of two bags checked in were missing. The missing bag contains his
laptop as well as designer clothes.

He said as he frantically called British Airways to inquire about his
missing baggage: 'I don't know what to feel, I don't know what to say.
I am very confused. I am disturbed. I have lost my laptop containing
the whole data of my work and music.'

He added that the laptop contained his new compositions as well. He
was supposed to wear the designer clothes for the 'Lord of the Rings'
musical.

A spokesman of British Airways told IANS that Rahman should contact
the airline with his details. 'After he contacts us, we will do
everything possible in our power to get the missing bag back.'

The West End production of 'The Lord of the Rings' is scheduled to
open Tuesday evening at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in Covent Garden.

Based on the hugely popular trilogy of novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, it
features direction by Matthew Warchus, book and lyrics by Shaun
McKenna and Matthew Warchus, and music by Rahman and Varttina with
Christopher Nightingdale

Parvez Alam, editor of India-EU Film Initiative, told IANS that 'Lord
of the Rings' is the most expensive musical ever staged outside Las
Vegas, and the first major stage adaptation of Tolkien's classic trilogy.

Rahman's music in collaboration with Varttina, exhilarating
choreography, remarkable staging and stunning design will combine to
transform Drury Lane into Tolkien's Middle-earth in a mesmerising and
spectacular theatrical event featuring an ensemble of over 70 actors,
singers and musicians.

Alam said that this was the second musical by Rahman after the success
of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Bollywood Dreams'.

Reports say that the adaptation was savaged by many critics when it
opened in Toronto last year. Cut and substantially rewritten, it has
cost 25 million pounds to bring it to London, making it the most
expensive musical ever staged outside Las Vegas.

According to reports, the new version was applauded by the audience at
a preview in London.

This follows the 70th anniversary of Tolkien starting to write the
trilogy and the 50th anniversary of the publication of the complete
trilogy, 'The Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Two Towers' and 'The
Return of the King'.

[arr] Re: Rahman Rocks NewYork (Read this......)

2007-06-19 Thread Karthik. Venkataraman
I am not sure if I was hearing things but this is what happened :)
Hariharan was all set to leave the stage after the unplugged session
and (i think aye Hairathey). thats when ARR started playing something
on the grand piano and hariharan turned behind and Arr said Oru
telungu paatu (one telugu song). the next thing i heard ARR say
was enakaaga (for me). :)

i could have perceived the entire episode in a wrong way... but it
seemed like a impromptu decision to have that song then.

when Sivaji came on, but I don't think the so-called Hindi audience
minded it or vice versa when many original Tamil numbers were
performed in Hindi. It's unlikely Hari was surprised at performing in
Telugu since the same song had already been performed at two or three
earlier concerts on this tour.

Niceee, but I have learnt that it is often better to take anything
from Rediff with a pinch of salt.

As usual Rediff manages to screw things due to the seemingly rampant
incompetence of its staff and the way they let parochialism seep in,
not just into the comments section (about which they don't really
have
any control), but the actual articles itself.

From the
comments
I see here about the tour in general, no one seemed to complain
along
those lines. So having seeing most of the fan quotes on that article
go along that path put me off.

In fact, I'd have wanted to see more Telugu numbers (disclosure: my
knowledge of Telugu is minimal) in there. The inclusion of the one
number seemed to be an after-thought. It did NOT look stage managed,
but I thought Hariharan was slightly surprised when ARR told him
that
the next song was in Telugu.

for the theatrical version of 'Lord of the Rings' scheduled for Tuesday
night.

Rahman arrived at the Heathrow airport from Washington after a successful

supposed to wear the designer clothes for the 'Lord of the Rings' musical.

A spokesman of British Airways told IANS that Rahman should contact the
airline with his details. 'After he contacts us, we will do everything
possible in our power to get the missing bag back.'

The West End production of 'The Lord of the Rings' is scheduled to open
Tuesday evening at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in Covent Garden.

Based on the hugely popular trilogy of novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, it features
direction by Matthew Warchus, book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna and Matthew
Warchus, and music by Rahman and Varttina with Christopher Nightingdale

Parvez Alam, editor of India-EU Film Initiative, told IANS that 'Lord of the

Reports say that the adaptation was savaged by many critics when it opened
in Toronto last year. Cut and substantially rewritten, it has cost 25
million pounds to bring it to London, making it the most expensive musical
ever staged outside Las Vegas.

According to reports, the new version was applauded by the audience at a
preview in London.

This follows the 70th anniversary of Tolkien starting to write the trilogy
and the 50th anniversary of the publication of the complete trilogy, 'The
Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Two Towers' and 'The Return of the King'.

Disappointing Concert -

Bored Rahman-
He was on stage on and off. Sometimes didn't have anything to do.
Looked detached from the proceedings. Sometimes he was seen watching
the big screen behind the stage standing in front of his keyboard.

Fewer musicians- Compared to his previous two USA concerts there
were very few musicians. Watch the LA concert DVD from year 2000 for
comparison. In that concert, every song was reproduced exactly same
as the original. In this concert, he didn't have enough people to
play all those minor instruments he uses in a song. Secondly,
sometimes you could hear the music but see no one playing. I think it
was mix of music being perforned live and tracks being played.

Dancing completely out of place- unlike 2000 LA concert.

Small stage- Very small stage.

Many of the regular musicians replaced by Substitutes (Miami
University??)-
Also some performers were picked by Rahman a week ago in a talent
search in US. One singer was particulary bad, the one who sang the
Saathiya song. I know Rahman likes experiment etc., but to take
thousands of audience for granted and put up a bad singer. That is
arrogance.

His star vocals group completely missing- No Domnique, Ganga, Febi,
Rehana, Clinton, Devan to name a few.

Overall, a low budget, very average show, with tickets no cheaper. I
guess, I got to erase this concert from memory.

Are you kidding me???
I was at the same show and did you see the energy levels of the
crowd and performers there??
Come on.. how can you compare every concert with LA and dubai shows?
They were big grand shows and supposed to be like that
and ARR specially wanted to make this stream of shows just to play his
recent hits and to satisy many ppl waiting for him.
One cannot expect to include all the big singers in all the concerts
as each artists schedules are sooo different and soo tight..
Do you expect Sankar mahadevan, udit, spb, asha bhonsle to
cancel all their appointments and go for a tour for a month?
All at once?
I donno what problem you see there.. but the show as I see is
as best as I can imagine to be.
Smaller stage? what will ARR do for that?? He atleast did a show
at DC.. am happy for that.. forget abut size and shape of the place.
What do yu mean by ARR is just standing there... what else yu expect
him to do? He composed it.. he made music sheets and made everyone
play.. hes a composer.. you cannot expect him to comeout and dance
vigourously.
I am surprised there are ppl who are dissappointed by the show..
that too after hearing Ghanan ghanan new version too
Its okay.. take it easy!

Disappointing Concert -Bored Rahman-He was on stage on and off. Sometimes
didn't have anything to do. Looked detached from the proceedings. Sometimes he
was seen watching the big screen behind the stage standing in front of his
keyboard.Fewer musicians- Compared to his previous two USA concerts there were
very few musicians. Watch the LA concert DVD from year 2000 for comparison. In
that concert, every song was reproduced exactly same as the original. In this
concert, he didn't have enough people to play all those minor instruments he
uses in a song. Secondly, sometimes you could hear the music but see no one
playing. I think it was mix of music being perforned live and tracks being
played.Dancing completely out of place- unlike 2000 LA concert.Small stage-
Very small stage. Many of the regular musicians replaced by Substitutes (Miami
University??)-Also some performers were picked by Rahman a week ago in a
talent search in US. One singer was particulary bad, the one who sang the
Saathiya song. I know Rahman likes experiment etc., but to take thousands of
audience for granted and put up a bad singer. That is arrogance. His star vocals
group completely missing- No Domnique, Ganga, Febi, Rehana, Clinton, Devan to
name a few.Overall, a low budget, very average show, with tickets no cheaper. I
guess, I got to erase this concert from memory.Raghu

*A.R. Rahman's laptop with 'Lord of the Rings' music missing*
Malaysia Sun
Tuesday 19th June, 2007
(IANS)

A laptop containing new compositions of popular Indian music composer A.R.
Rahman is part of a bag that went missing when he arrived here Monday night
for the theatrical version of 'Lord of the Rings' scheduled for Tuesday
night.

Rahman arrived at the Heathrow airport from Washington after a successful
performance in the US, but was stunned to discover that one of two bags
checked in were missing. The missing bag contains his laptop as well as
designer clothes.

He said as he frantically called British Airways to inquire about his
missing baggage: 'I don't know what to feel, I don't know what to say. I am
very confused. I am disturbed. I have lost my laptop containing the whole
data of my work and music.'

He added that the laptop contained his new compositions as well. He was
supposed to wear the designer clothes for the 'Lord of the Rings' musical.

Parvez Alam, editor of India-EU Film Initiative, told IANS that 'Lord of the
Rings' is the most expensive musical ever staged outside Las Vegas, and the
first major stage adaptation of Tolkien's classic trilogy.

Rahman's music in collaboration with Varttina, exhilarating choreography,
remarkable staging and stunning design will combine to transform Drury Lane
into Tolkien's Middle-earth in a mesmerising and spectacular theatrical
event featuring an ensemble of over 70 actors, singers and musicians.

Alam said that this was the second musical by Rahman after the success of
Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Bollywood Dreams'.

   COMMENT ON THIS STORY

THE LORD OF THE RINGS
Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London

YOU’VE never seen spectacle like it. Trouble is, you can’t come out of the
theatre humming spectacle.

For fans of J R R Tolkien’s books and the hugely successful film
trilogy, there are wizard wizards, spooky Black Riders, magical elves,
spring-heeled orcs, stilt-walking, tree-like ents and a scary,
40ft-wide spider. But where are the songs?

Stilted ... an Ent towers over the stage
The
music is written by the Indian A R Rahman and Finnish folk group
Värttinä so one might have guessed it wouldn’t threaten Andrew Lloyd
Webber.

But the melodies are almost tune-free, consisting of little but lush and very
loud moody themes with crashing crescendos.

And the lyrics, written by Shaun McKenna and the show’s director
Matthew Warchus, aren’t up to much, although so swamped are they by the
17- strong pit band that it’s difficult to tell.

What’s more, despite the occasional services of an unseen narrator,
the complicated story requires further long-winded explanation.

“Mr Gandalf, sir, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” says
brave hobbit Frodo, whereupon the action stops while Gandalf fills him
in.

Mind you, it’s absolutely necessary — the rest of us at the final preview
didn’t know what Gandalf was talking about, either.

Overblown, over-orchestrated and now over here, the show that began
life in Toronto 15 months ago has lost half an hour or more on its
transatlantic trip.

It’s not enough. Three ponderous hours are broken only by one
interval and a short, scene-shifting break when those giant,
beetle-like orcs threateningly patrol the aisles — presumably to stop
the audience leaving.

I reckon there are too many minuses for the show to be the massive
hit necessary for the £12.5million investment to be recouped, even if
every Tolkien junkie in the country flocks to Drury Lane.

But there are some pluses as the famous Fellowship of nine set out
to destroy the all-powerful ring and rid Middle-earth of the evil Dark
Lord, Sauron.

There’s a potentially award-winning performance from Michael
Therriault, star of the Canadian production, whose wheedling, whining,
slithery Gollum makes his entrance by crawling head first from ceiling
to stage.

He’s brilliant and so is Peter Howe as Sam, Frodo’s friend and the
real hero of the story in my book. Rob Howell’s costumes and sets are
terrific, too — the mystical forest stretches halfway across the
auditorium roof and walls.

And Peter Darling, the man responsible for the dynamic dancing in
the stage version of Billy Elliot, contributes some sprightly
choreography, even if the sameness of the battle scenes eventually
defeats him.

Caught napping ... Gollum, played by Michael Therriault attacks Sam and
Frodo

But even with a cast of thousands — just over 50 actually, but they
run about a lot — and all that money turning the stage into a
forbidding fairyland,

The Lord Of The Rings is a disappointment.

I was glad to get out of my seat and hobbit, sorry hop it, home at the end.

[arr] Four stars from The Times

2007-06-19 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

It’s finally here – the year’s most anticipated theatrical opening, costing
£12.5 million and heralded by high hopes on one hand and prophecies of doom
on the other. When I saw Matthew Warchus’s production in Toronto last year,
I was dazzled and delighted by its ingenuity and visual invention. I was
also frustrated by its slower, muddier passages, unimpressed by some key
performances and deeply disappointed by its bungled climax.

Happily, almost everything that was wrong has been put right. Some will prefer
the slick grandiosity of Peter Jackson’s films; others will sneer at the
very idea of singing hobbits. It’s their loss. Warchus and his team have a
created a brave, stirring, epic piece of popular theatre that, without
slavishly adhering to J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels, embraces their spirit. The
show has charm, wit, and jaw-dropping theatrical brio; crucially, it also
 has real emotional heft.

Warchus’s and Shaun McKenna’s book has been streamlined, but at more than
three hours the show is still long – yet it doesn’t outstay its welcome. Rob
Howell’s stunning tree-roots design stretches out into the auditorium, and
performers, too, spill from the stage, creating a fantastical environment
that draws you in and grips you from beginning to end. Hobbits chase
fireflies along the aisles; screeching, leather-clad orcs not only leap and
somersault, on springed shoes, across the stage’s multiple revolving levels,
but, startlingly, loom over unwary spectators. Frodo puts on the ring and
vanishes before your eyes. Huge black riders and a hideously hairy giant
spider, conjured through adroit puppetry and brilliantly lit by Paul Pyant,
 become creatures of genuine terror.

But there’s more here than spectacle. The music, by the Indian composer A.R.
Rahman and the Finnish folk group Värttinä with Christopher Nightingale,
airy and earthy by turns, carries and intensifies the story’s swell of
feeling. Themes of friendship, of the destruction of innocence and a world
divided by race and belief emerge powerfully. The bond between James Loye’s
courageous Frodo and Peter Howe’s loyal Sam is warmly affecting. Malcolm
Storry’s compelling Gandalf blends otherworldly wisdom with patriarchal
concern, and Laura Michelle Kelly as Galadriel, a sweet-voiced golden vision
who descends in a skein of silk, is both ethereally lovely and magisterial.
When Rosalie Craig as Arwen bids farewell to Jérôme Pradon’s sexily
charismatic Aragorn, you glimpse the timeless agony of women down the ages
sending their men off to war.

Most memorable of all is Michael Therriault’s riveting Gollum, muttering,
growling, slithering, crawling and darting, part insect, part reptile.
Listening to Frodo and Sam comforting each other with an old fireside song,
 he is torn between longing, hateful resentment and flickering affection;
Therriault’s evocation of a mind and body tormented and divided is
 extraordinary.

Peter Darling’s choreography thrills, from a rousing tavern song to welters
of warring orcs to an aerial elfin ballet; and though Warchus keeps the
stage constantly bustling there is not a note sung, not a movement or an
effect that doesn’t serve the story.

The battle scenes still struggle to create a sufficient sense of scale; and
the inevitable telescoping of Tolkien’s dense material can be
disorientating. But snobbery and cynicism be damned: this show is a wonder.
Go with an open mind, an open heart, and wide-open eyes, and prepare for
 enchantment.
