2007-06-21 Thread godi_smile1

i do agree that harris is no match for ar rahman. he definetly
copies a lot. i personally think some people go off the wall by saying
not to talk about other md's here. well, its a shame. why should we
have that insecurity.

iam not at all a fan of harris but vaseegara is one of
my favorites. if you guys think harris has copied rahman sir's style
then what about joshua sridhar, g.v. prakash, yuvan, mani sharma etc.
all sound the same. other than our boss its only harris who is taking
tamil music out side( even though the response is poor). neither yuvan
or karthick raja are not doing it.

i still feel gajini should have been harris's. but
unfortunately his name wont sell cd's in the north. we have to wish
harris well in the future, thats what true winners do.

I 've never heard the sparrows sing at 2 am. But those little
fluttery things were cheep-cheep-chirruping away on a leafy bough at
Chennai's Kodambakkam residence, studio and prayer alcove of A R R.
Was the sparrow squad infected by the every day and night music
around them? Or was I just hallucinating?

No answer to that one I'm afraid. But after seeing the little big
genius work, dream and talk at that address, I feel blessed.
Unimagined sounds suddenly reverberate from his mega-synth console,
from his sibilant hums as he goes uh..na..na even as his visage
becomes more sombre than a magistrate's.

Then the slow-mo coming-out of a near trance and an apologetic, "What
do you think?" Before I can utter half a syllable, he's on, "Okay,
we'll try something else.. na na na.. hum.. hum.. la la la.. oowaah
wooh."

Cross with himself for not hitting the right notes, he taps away at a
laptop, either converses too much or not at all.. vanishes for his
prayer and returns a new man.

More attempts, more self-dissatisfaction, and all of a sudden at
least five variations for a single song are ready, take your pick.

His first version of the devotional song, Piya Haji Ali, was 14-
minutes long, edited to a filmable five minute length. He promised to
give me the original, hasn't.. yet. Some music, perhaps, he keeps to
himself.

Over 15 years, he has preserved his position of India's most creative
and ground-breaking music composer. He's been knighted as the Mozart
of Asia but.. such titles embarrass him. He looks away, a hint of
self-deprecatory giggle followed by the sentence, "Please, I cannot
be talked about in the same breath."

And when you switch to the role of an interviewer, he answers off-the-
cuff, to ask at the end of a gab session, "I feel strange talking
about myself, did I do okay? He did. Excerpts:

What kind of music plays on the iPod of his mind?
Whatever I'm working on at a point of time.. or if I'm on a concert
tour, it is snatches of different pieces of music.. which escape and
come back as if they were being recalled from a distance. Piano
themes from the film songs take long to finesse, at times of course a
tune just hits me like it does with every composer, become either
playful or stubborn.. and I've to take it from there.

The piano theme for Rang de Basanti and then Guru kept eluding me, I
kept working and working on them round the clock. No composer can be
narcissistic though.. his ear and heart take in the music around
him.For instance, the piano theme for Rang de Basanti and then Guru
kept eluding me, I kept working and working on them round the clock.
No composer can be narcissistic though.. his ear and heart take in
the music around him, whether it's something playing on TV, a child
laughing musically or a CD I've heard recently .

The thing is to keep oneself open, if I'm told James Blunt's You're
so beautiful had a certain lilt to it, I listen to it.. casually
and .. then if I like it, again and again.. and again.. it makes me
feel light, relieved.

And if I ever feel a mental block, there's Vivaldi's Four Seasons. If
you haven't heard it, you haven't lived. (Perceiving the blank look
on my face) I won't give you my copy, but I'll get a CD burnt for
you.. Vivaldi! Vivaldi! Let's hear it right now.. (we do).

Dear all Ar Fans,

If Amir had said that he loved Harris Jayaraj's score
for Ghajini, i dont think we all have to read too much
, or to create too much of fuss ..Its true
that Ghajini is a good musical score and also i dont
think its any one's right to say only ARR can produce
good music scores ...We all are exposed to
many genere of music talents and i should say we all
are blessed to hear a lot of music with great
quality.

I still feel like Harris should break into
BollywoodThen only this true talents come out,
he is playing within a limited scope ..He
should come out and prove his true talent ...

ARR on the other part has nothing to prove to anyone
and i dont think as TRUE FANS we dont have to get
panicked or infact for what.Sense of
insecurity and all are of some one Fresh inot the
scene not anymore for our ARR.

come on guys...

Re: [arr] Re: I love Harris Jayarajs music in Ghajini: Aamir

2007-06-21 Thread Kalimuthu V

Though I agree to the point that he copies ARR style and a few of his
compositions, we can't simply blame HJ.

RHTDM failure was nothing to do with HJ. It was not presented properly to
Hindi audience. Or they chose a wrong story to be remade. Minnale songs are
awesome. No questions!

I personally don't like HJ. I like Vidhyasagar & Bhardhwaj songs than HJ.
When Ghajini songs were released, I just wanted to hate it without even
listening. I loved talking something bad about those songs. But at the end,
HJ became the winner. 'Oru Maalai Ila Veyil', is one of my all time
favorites.

I don't want to comment about Hindi Ghajini. There might be various reasons
behind choosing ARR. ARR did 'Kadhalukku Mariyadhai' Hindi version. It did
sound good. And Tamil version had its own peculiarity.

Many movies go flop in the BO. We can't blame MD for that. 12B, Lesa Lesa
had good songs. But they did not well in the BO.

As you all know, this is true in case of ARR too. We get frustrated when the
movie fails inspite of having good music. Due to this, good songs go
unnoticed. Recent eg. SOK.

Kankalal Kaithu Sei
En Swasa Katre
Swades
Bose
Kannathil Muthamittal

What happened in 80s & 90s?. There were only 4 main singers. SPB, Yesudas,
Chitra, & Janaki. Arr changed everything after 'Roja'. Now there are so many
singers. We get to hear different voices. Think about the amount of singers,
players & MDs (Ranjit Barot, Sridhar, Prakash, HJ, Rehana, ...) he has
produced. That's what matters a lot. Being a sole winner, does do good for
longer duration. So competition is good!

BTW, I am happy to see ARR composing Ghajini coz we can get one more good
album. If HJ had been chosen, he would have just dubbed Tamil songs to
Hindi. But now we can expect an album that's going to be different from the
original. So it's good us!

More music!

Kalimuthu

Yes man, this is the perfect reply. Hjs songs were
good. But the fact is that he did not have his own
style in music. One guy say that if amir select hj for
ghajini hindi it would have been a break for him. One
question to them, What happened to RHTDM (the hindi
version of minnale)? Why couldnt he got break through?
Were minnale songs very bad? But the fact is that he
copies ARR in his every compositions. Bollywood will
never encourage copycats. Hj stole ARRs own style. In
my opinion Even if trying for variety tunes sometimes
arr should have been done music in his own style. This
is my personal opinion. Look IR, many MDs copied his
style, but he did every compositions his own style in
every time. No one (his copycats) could beat him. This
doesnt mean hj beat ARR. What the point i want to
express is that ARR must do music in his own style.
Critics will call repeatation. Dont worry , we people
like it very much. I hope that GHAJINI will be a reply
to every one.

2007-06-21 Thread badrie
I was happy to see the 'Butterfly' Jingle on Sun TV last week. Its
been reshot and the music has also been rehashed with lot of
instrumentation. The original version by ARR had a haunting voice,
lots of String arrangements and Flute in it.. the new one sound like
its been heavily synthesized..

Does anyone have the old one???

Gops I see that you are collecting some of his rare memorabilia's of
ARR, this shud be a good addition.

cheers
Badrie

Ya the songs from Ghajini was good but i dont think those can create a wave in

The U.S. Consul General David Hopper exprience on Sivaji

http://sivajimovie.blogspot.com/
The U.S. Consul General David Hopper went to watch the first-day first
show of "Sivaji". Here's what he thought of the experience
My Indian colleagues at the Consulate told me that the premiere of a
Rajnikanth film is a unique experience, and with the kind cooperation and
hospitality of Sathyam Cinemas, they arranged for me to attend one of the
opening day screenings of " Sivaji".
It proved to be unique indeed. The energy and excitement of the action on
the screen was equalled by the energy and passion of the audience, who
obviously were all true fans and devotees of Rajnikanth.

Neither in America nor in any of the many other countries where I have
lived, have I had such a cinema experience. The excitement in the packed
auditorium was palpable and the noise, deafening, but they added to the
experience rather than detracting from it. I enjoyed myself thoroughly, and
I felt privileged to have a very special Chennai experience

[arr] Lord of the Rings musical gets mixed reviews in London

2007-06-21 Thread Thulasi Ram

http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/StoryPage.aspx?id=1435048f-1738-4dea-9a46-fbda675f74f7&ParentID=fa6a017d-6173-4228-bb33-8694a6968213&&Headline=EMLord+of+the+Rings%2fEM+musical+gets+mixed+reviews
*

*The Lord of the Rings* musical, the most expensive production in Westend
history, opened to a standing ovation from its audience, and mixed reviews
from the critics, with some praising it as brilliant and a wonder, and
others calling it "a thumping great flop" and corny.

The stage adaptation of JRR Tolkien's fantasy saga officially opened
on Tuesday night at London's Theatre Royal, with actors dressed as hobbits,
elves and dwarfs, and pyrotechnics, special effects and a revolving stage
aimed at recreating Middle Earth. The score of the musical has been composed
by Indian music maestro AR Rahman.

The 12.5 million pound (US$25 million, euro18.5 million) show based on
Tolkien's literary trilogy about a Hobbit named Frodo and his quest to rid
Middle Earth of evil, has been trimmed and reworked since its Toronto
premiere, which earned mixed reviews.

The Toronto Star had renamed it *Bored Of The Rings*, while Variety called
it "a saga of short people burdened by power jewelry."

But the London show won the praise of some critics. The Times called
director Matthew Warchus' Westend production a "wonder" and "a brave,
stirring, epic piece of popular theater" complete with "charm, wit and
jaw-dropping theatrical brio."

The Times called director Matthew Warchus' Westend production a "wonder"
and "a brave, stirring, epic piece of popular theater" complete with "charm,
wit and jaw-dropping theatrical brio." The Guardian said, "If Tolkien's
trilogy is to be a stage spectacle, I don't see how it could be better
done." It also praised the acting of Malcolm Storry as Gandalf, Brian
Protheroe as Saruman and Andrew Jarvis as Elrond, "whose kingly voice
resonates like thunder."

Actress Dame Judi Dench, who attended the premiere with other celebrities
such as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Kevin Spacey, said: "For anyone who is a
Tolkien fan, it is just a terrific treat. I have never seen the films, but I
am a great fan of Tolkien's writing. It has wonderful choreography and the
cast worked so hard."

But some critics did not like the three-hour musical by producer Kevin
Wallace. Charles Spencer of The Daily Telegraph said that, while Michael
Therriault's "charismatic and creepy" performance as Gollum was admirable,
along with those of Frodo and Sam, the show was hated by his 14-year-old
son, an avid fan of the Peter Jackson *Lord of the Rings* films. "Its run, I
fear, will be nasty, brutish and short," Spencer concluded.

The Independent called it an "inadequate Tolkien adaptation," and said the
storytelling is rushed. Using the headline "Flawed of the Rings," The Sun
said the show's melodies were "tune-free" and the lyrics were "swamped" by
the massive band. "Overblown, over-orchestrated and now over here," its
critic said.

But the paper praised Michael Therriault's "potentially award-winning"
performance as a "wheedling, whining, slithery Gollum," Peter Howe's Sam,
Frodo's friend, and the costumes, sets and the "sprightly choreography." The
Independent also praised Therriault as a "standout performer."

The Financial Times said, "As for Finnish folk group Varttina's score, even
with two makeovers by (Bollywood composer) A.R. Rahman and now (musical
supervisor) Christopher Nightingale, it cannot muster a single memorable
tune."

The Daily Mail said, "The set changes are multifarious, the dancing
exuberant, the band's brass section parps its heart out." But it also said:
"British adults will find it difficult to suppress open laughter at this
show's Portentous Moments. Corny is hardly the word. There's more corn here
than in Kansas."

London: The world's best loved hobbits - Frodo, Sam and Bilbo are now on stage
in the theatrical production of J RR Tolkein's Lord of the Rings. The over £12
million production, which opened in London on Tuesday, is the most expensive in
West End's history.

The music has been composed by A R Rahman along with Finnish composer Varttina
and Christopher nightingale.

For Rahman, who had also composed music for Bombay Dreams, this was a more
challenging experience.

"In the beginning I didn't know anything about Lord of Rings. At the first
meeting when I met the director, I was blown by it. This score had to have an
ancient kind of quality but at the same time have a contemporary feel. It had
to be darker but uplifting. Audience shouldn't be tired," says A R Rahman.

The musical directed by Marcus Warchus premiered in Toronto last year and
didn't go down too well with the critics. But changes have been made since and
the producers are sure that the audiences here will love the unique theatrical
experience.

"They are not just sitting back. They are part of this. It's the thrill. The
kids are playing, and even the adults then warm up and start playing," says
Producer, Lord of the Rings, Kevin Wallace.

And if the guest line-up at the premiere is anything to go by, this promises
to be a real draw.

"I am a Tolkein fan. I have a personalised copy of the Hobbit," says Hollywood
actress Dame Judi Dench.

Bollywood actress Ayesha Dharker adds, "I have heard so much about the book."

We may have read the books, seen the films, but if you want to step into
Tolkein's middle earth, the theatrical production promises just that.
