i agree 100% with u Pavan.. well said. i kinda like ARR and SJS combination.

Pravinkanth's Jodi was a hit, Ratchagan recovered its cost and was not a
failure, it juz didint do that well considering the huge budget. I have read
articles that confirms this. His Star though was a flop. I too am glad that
ARR didint do Thullal considerin the movie is similar to New and Ah Aah with
double meaning dialogues and vulgarity. It seems pravinkanth has gone the
sjs way.

version had music by Ilayaraja, starring Vijay & Shalini.Whereas the
movie Jodi starred Prasanth & Simran.

Does anyone know the name of the movie?

And luckily ARR did not work on Thullal, considering the star cast
(weak), story(negative) and commercial success potential(???)

Remember how Star bombed at Box office though songs were super hit?
Same goes to Ratchagan. Not sure abt Jodi though

[arr] SPB about ARR!!!

2007-07-11 Thread Aravind AM

Hi all,

In the show called "Ennodu Paatu Paadungal" hosted by SPB on Jaya TV (Tamil)
last saturday, SPB spoke about ARR. He said that working with ARR is
extremely comfortable as he gives loads of freedom. Also, if the singers
make some mistake while singing or if ARR is not satisfied, he doesnt get
angry. Instead, he just smiles, and says "that was good I liked it...
how about going for one more take?" Thus, he records 5-6 versions of the
song, and takes the best parts from each of those and makes the complete
song!! The singer is happe, ARR is happy!!

In another episode of the show which is yet to be aired, and which i
attended the live recording, SPB again spoke about ARR. This time it was
about Ballelakka (Sivaji) song. He said he found it really difficult to
sing the song as it was a tough song and many portions were breathless...
however, ARR sang it for him, very very casually, just running his fingers
thru his hair!! :) He said, ARR makes anything look so easy! In the same
episode, a veteran tamil assistant music director (Pls pardon me, i forget
his name) also spoke highly of ARR. HE said, "there was a time when no
indian song, especially melodies, would be without tabla or dholak... there
would be one odd song with drums... but ARR changed all that... he showed
that there can be melodies created without tablas and dholaks... he thought
differently and thus created a total change in the way indian film music was
made!"

[arr] The Statesman reviews One Love

2007-07-11 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

One Love

AR Rahman

EMI

Popular track: One Love

The big debate over the selection procedure of the world’s seven
wonders is finally over and thank god for it. This album allows us to
forget questions such as “was this organisation authorised to select
the next seven wonders”. AR Rahman has done a wonderful job composing
One Love. The album features six versions of One Love in various
languages. Now that the seven wonders have been announced, surely this
album will not be found in record stores for long. But rest assured the
next time you see a video of the Taj Mahal on television, this song
will play in the background. AR Rahman never fails to deliver.

It would be thrilling to hear someone from the ARR's fan group has

Amith Chandhran <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
This writer called Rabah Nazki once happened to travel to Chennai by the

The original article is written in Urdu, and is posted here. This is the
free-hand translation of the same article. I am not translating the article

But don't worry, am taking care that you don't miss the important content in

A. R. Rahman is a combination of innocence of a child and simplicity of a
saint. I recently met him on Mumbai to Chennai trip. When I introduced myself
to him, he noticed the similarity in my name and that of Rabah Basri's, and in
no time, we started talking. He was very frank; in fact; our conversation
started in the air travel and ended in his home in Chennai!

Far away from the material world:

What I realized thru the conversation about him is that he is far away from
the material world. He started talking on spirituality by saying "Whenever the
plane takes off, I think this would be my last journey of life". He went
further describing how music and spirituality go hand in hand. "You cannot take
one out of the other. Music lets you look inside within you. It takes you on
such a high, far away from this material world, and moreover, it also takes you
nearer to the God. You feel the purification that takes place within you while
listening to music. Maybe this is the reason why music is sometimes called an
integral part of devotion – of Dhikr and Ibaadat."

"We used Sufiana music in Chhaiyyan Chhaiyyan from Dil Se.. and people
appreciated it a lot. That is only because; Sufiana music is all about
devotion. People can easily relate to it. Music cannot be created on
conditions. According to me, while creating any form of art, the only thing
which should be taken care of is that it should be perfect piece of craft. We
should do our best to get the perfection."

  …Only because of my mother:

Whatever I am today is only because of my mother. I can never forget what she
has done for us. After my father passed away, she insisted that I join the
music. She had seen a dream for me and she has worked very hard for that dream
to come true. She was more confident than anyone else that I'd be a musician
sometime. She knows what's right and what's wrong for our family better than
anyone else. She has a great intuition. There is something divine about her".

  Spirituality and religion:

"For me religion is like an instruction manual. You know the instruction
manuals which come with mobile phones? I think religion is something like that.
It is an instruction manual for the human beings, to make them the perfect
human beings."
"Religion teaches us a lot: regarding many things in life. It teaches
maintaining the relations with others; heading to the right path in life;
thinking in a better way and almost everything. If we follow the things
perfectly we will certainly be happy in our lives, and will have mental peace."
"Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H.) has once said, listen to your inner voice, and
it will guide you, it will tell you the rights and wrongs. The God is within
us, and we are the most closer-ones to the God. Only necessary thing is to know
about yourself and your needs."
"In this modern age, every person should try to follow his own religion
perfectly. And the teaching of all the religions is in fact one and the same.
That is- loving others and spreading the peace! Is it not?"

  Music is what I breathe:

"Music runs through my blood vessels. The very first show ever in my life -
in which I had performed - was conducted when I was about 11 years old. Being
in music since my childhood, I knew that success doesn't come all of a sudden,
but it comes gradually. People started appreciating my music very slowly, after
listening to it through the radio programs, television shows; live shows and
later in the films. Couple of years ago, I felt that the live concerts are much
more exciting and stimulating for the audience as well as our musicians. I feel
the audience shares the music running thru my blood vessels. This is the
feeling which helps the musicians to grow."
"Music is devotion only. Music itself is a language, which everyone can
understand. It gives peace. Music is the language of spirituality which knows
no boundaries. Music i

[arr] Book on ARR?

2007-07-11 Thread sriharsha24
Hi guys,

Though it may be too early to suggest, since ARR is and will remain
young enuf for all of us, are there any biographers here??

If not now, maybe 10 years from now there would be a book on ARR and
dedicated to his music. We can have one whole book on his music and
another book on him as a person.

It would be thrilling to hear someone from the ARR's fan group has
written ARR's biography. How about that?

[arr] I met Rahman uncle again on 10th Jul'07

2007-07-11 Thread T Krishnababu
Dear All,

I had the great oppurtunity to meet Rahman uncle once again on the
10th Jul'07 in Chennai./ He had come to bless my western guru Sri
Sadha's son on his wedding reception. I had the oppurtunity to perform
a concert that day. I did take photos with ARR uncle and was very
happy.

However ARR uncle came in to the hall as we were packing the board and
so did not get the great oppurtunity of him seeing me play live. Any
way many great things happened in my life after i met him and took
photo in Narada Gana Sabha and like that i am sure i have got myself
charged up to get best things to come.

Rgds and love to all of you.

A. R. Rahman is a combination of innocence of a child and simplicity of a
saint. I recently met him on Mumbai to Chennai trip. When I introduced
myself to him, he noticed the similarity in my name and that of Rabah
Basri's, and in no time, we started talking. He was very frank; in fact; our
conversation started in the air travel and ended in his home in Chennai!

*Far away from the material world:*

What I realized thru the conversation about him is that he is far away
from the material world. He started talking on spirituality by saying
"Whenever the plane takes off, I think this would be my last journey of
life". He went further describing how music and spirituality go hand in
hand. "You cannot take one out of the other. Music lets you look inside
within you. It takes you on such a high, far away from this material world,
and moreover, it also takes you nearer to the God. You feel the purification
that takes place within you while listening to music. Maybe this is the
reason why music is sometimes called an integral part of devotion – of *Dhikr
*and *Ibaadat*."

"We used Sufiana music in *Chhaiyyan Chhaiyyan* from *Dil Se..* and people
appreciated it a lot. That is only because; Sufiana music is all about
devotion. People can easily relate to it. Music cannot be created on
conditions. According to me, while creating any form of art, the only thing
which should be taken care of is that it should be perfect piece of craft.
We should do our best to get the perfection."

*…Only because of my mother:*

Whatever I am today is only because of my mother. I can never forget what
she has done for us. After my father passed away, she insisted that I join
the music. She had seen a dream for me and she has worked very hard for that
dream to come true. She was more confident than anyone else that I'd be a
musician sometime. She knows what's right and what's wrong for our family
better than anyone else. She has a great intuition. There is something
divine about her".

*Spirituality and religion:*

"For me religion is like an instruction manual. You know the instruction
manuals which come with mobile phones? I think religion is something like
that. It is an instruction manual for the human beings, to make them the
perfect human beings."

"Religion teaches us a lot: regarding many things in life. It teaches
maintaining the relations with others; heading to the right path in life;
thinking in a better way and almost everything. If we follow the things
perfectly we will certainly be happy in our lives, and will have mental
peace."

"Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H.) has once said, listen to your inner voice,
and it will guide you, it will tell you the rights and wrongs. The God is
within us, and we are the most closer-ones to the God. Only necessary thing
is to know about yourself and your needs."

"In this modern age, every person should try to follow his own religion
perfectly. And the teaching of all the religions is in fact one and the
same. That is- loving others and spreading the peace! Is it not?"

*Music is what I breathe:*

"Music runs through my blood vessels. The very first show ever in my life
- in which I had performed - was conducted when I was about 11 years old.
Being in music since my childhood, I knew that success doesn't come all of a
sudden, but it comes gradually. People started appreciating my music very
slowly, after listening to it through the radio programs, television shows;
live shows and later in the films. Couple of years ago, I felt that the live
concerts are much more exciting and stimulating for the audience as well as
our musicians. I feel the audience shares the music running thru my blood
vessels. This is the feeling which helps the musicians to grow."

"Music is devotion only. Music itself is a language, which everyone can
understand. It gives peace. Music is the language of spirituality which
knows no boundaries. Music is beyond all religions, castes, and all kind of
differences. Believe me; one good song can change your life. I know some

[arr] Recent Concert Tour Question

2007-07-11 Thread Niraj
I attended the concert in Atlanta and heard a couple of new songs (at
least they were new to me!). One of the songs is apparently one Rahaman
did for a project in the UK to help stop hunger? Anyone know what song
this was/is? Anyone know about some of the other non-film songs he
performed during the concert? They sounded like they could be partially
in English...

Thank You

[arr] mithoon and ARR ..

2007-07-11 Thread innocentankit
hi ,

first of all thank you very much ,AMITH, the interview was a must
read and wouldn't have been possible without a translation..it just
epitomises the humbleness and the greatness of ARR.

okay coming to a topic, i would like to discuss out here is about
MITHOON...!!

first of all, i am not trying to compare him with ARR, but i guess
he does show a potential which should be noticed and strikes a
similarity with ARR.

1. with songs like 'BAS EK PAL' and 'TERE BIN' , and i guess the one
which striked me the most MAULA MERE MAULA...a divine love song,
composed by him and that too at a age of 22 speaks a lot...!!
thats the most striking part,,, to a compose a song with such depth
and divinity or rather pristinity at a age of 22 is certainly striking.

2. his first full album 'THE TRAIN' is a runaway success musically
songs like THE TRAIN...shows his background arrangement
cappability immensely.
his sung songs 'MAUSAM' and 'woh ajnabee' , is striking.

3. just google his name and read the few interviews he has given ,
just shows the maturity of the guy./(he says he will never lift a
tune, music should come from within, 'ARR is his fav.')

4. also DOORIE album ATIFis composed by himjust
superb.

5. his forthcoming venture a album with Abhijeet sawant,'AGAR(aug 2007)'
and also he has composed 5 songs for a malay film DIVAjust
hearing the soundtrack of this film on a search at YOUTUBE

it was really refreshin, compelling me too put him right up with
ARR , VISHAL BHARADWAJ...!!

with such quality work already backing himhe really has a lot of
potential.at the age of 22way to go
though.quite inspirational for a 22 jughead like me..!!!

Pravinkanth's Jodi was a hit, Ratchagan recovered its cost and was not a
failure, it juz didint do that well considering the huge budget. I have read
articles that confirms this. His Star though was a flop. I too am glad that ARR
didint do Thullal considerin the movie is similar to New and Ah Aah with double
meaning dialogues and vulgarity. It seems pravinkanth has gone the sjs way.

With all due apologies to Vairamuthu , I present
you to a badly translated English version of the song.

With the complexities of active- passive reverse connotations
when you try translating a Dravidian language to English and my limited
knowledge
of both the languages, and importantly the lack of similis in English I seek
your pardon ahead of time.

Lyrics : Vairamuthu

Singers : Mano, Sujatha

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROvRin-v_go

 If you combine
these lyrics with the visuals you can relate more to the settings described /
inquired upon as they seem a little disarray when read singularly.

The song

You who was born to my athai* and have blossomed in to woman

* Your father sister
is Athai for u and in many traditions athais daughter is the desired match for
a guy

You carry the sweetness of your youth in lovely pavadi ( skirt )

When did u grow up to be such beautiful women for I fondly
remember you as kid playing to catch grasshoppers?

When did u bloom in to a full moon from the crescent you
were?

If silence is your answer for all my queries what else do I
do?

(aaththangara) - >
The trees by the bank of the river ; the
leaves from the "arsamaram" ; the branches from the "ala-maram" ; the pretty
parrot that sleeps in that tree ,
look at her …..

By the bunds in the farming field, there she stands like fully
bloomed cotton.

She who picks silly fights with me, is this the same girl
who has blessed the thavani ( half saree ) by adorning it.

Our relationship will stand the test of time, like flowing
river water which is never salty.

Watch out of the wind instruments / key
board interlude at this junction it will remind you of other rahman songs! :)

Mamame (My dearest) I yearned and starved (literally and
emotionally) for you and your sight

Even when the situations and omens were against me, I came
running to see your lovely face.

I went calling for you by the banks of the river ,

I went calling for you by the Train*** that went past by ,

The river flew, the train went past by, time passed

And my eyes were filled with tears longing for you.

My dearest please don't leave me

For if you do, my life would leave me too.

*** The visual and
imaginative comparison of a train leaving a small village is a much exploited
theme
in tamizh movies to symbolize separation.

(aaththangara)

Hey you with the lovely dress ; are you fine ?

Is your lovely feet fine?

How are things back home?

Are the flowers in your garden fine? (the actual meaning of thottapoo
ellaam sogandhaanaa thodaadha poovum sogandhaanaa is very tricky to write *
wink * wink)

Are the trees in the garden fine ?

Are you parents doing fine ?

Are our childhood memories fine ?

It has been so long since I last laid my eyes on you and I am back now and it
is time for us to tie the knot in the eternal bond of marriage.

2007-07-11 Thread Kumaran

It's Doli Sajakhe Rakhna directed by priyadarshan. It was actually a
remake from malayalam which was directed by fazil. He then remaked it
in tamil. The south versions were hits but the hindi one bombed.

"Jodi"'s songs were used (or is it reverse?) in
a HINDI remake of the movie Kadhalukku Mariyadhai. The Tamil
version had music by Ilayaraja, starring Vijay & Shalini.Whereas the
movie Jodi starred Prasanth & Simran.

2007-07-11 Thread Aashish Watve
I am not sure about how much success harris got beyond
rahena hai tere dil main.
I also think, Ranjit Barot is one of the promising
person. I have liked his rhythm programming in ARRs
songs. I can immediately recall Kondukondain
kondukondain song "Kannamuchi", where he had done
additional rhythm programming. There are many more
from Ranjit like that.

Aashish
