   Happy Birthday BOSS.

Below is the article on ARR's birthday from Zee News...nice one..

 ---

   The Mozart of Madras*Mini Kumari*

I have fought, argued, held eternal grudges against anyone who didn't
agree with me over the greatness of Rahman, the Mozart of Madras. From
buying the first audio release, to listening to his music all day long, it's
after a long time that I sit to rethink and share my thoughts on the wizard,
who weaves spells through his music.

The name needs no introduction. It stands for melody, energy – a heady mix
of modern and traditional form of music. It also symbolises the man who has
stirred emotions of love, patriotism, and many unspoken feelings by his
music. A tech-savvy musician, who mixes charms of musical notes with
technology to create a new genre of listeners. A man who has gained
international acclaims yet remains humble, truthful, with an air of
 innocence.

 Born A S Dileep Kumar, A R Rahman turns 42-year-old today.

 *Birth and personal life*

Dileep was born in Chennai to Late R K Shekhar and Kasturi (now Kareema
Begum). He was introduced to music at an early age and in a short span of
time became the best-selling recording artiste ever surpassing Elvis,
 Beatles and Jackson.

Being second among the 4 children, Rahman has three sisters, Rehana
(Kanchana), Fatima Talat (Bala) and Israth.

At the age of 29, Rahman had an arranged marriage to the beautiful, demure
Kutchi speaking wife, Saira in 1995. They have three children, two daughters
namely Khatija and Raheema and a son –Rumi.

 *Early years*

Life is drama – true in the case of young Dileep, who lost his father
while he was just nine years old. He became the sole breadwinner of his
family by playing instruments in bands and lending the musical instruments
owned by his father to various troops. A school dropout, this little
precocious child soon became a touring tyro musician with tabla maestro
Zakir Hussain and various other orchestras.

Dileep converted to Islam at the age of 20. My dad went through a lot of
problems. He was sick and my childhood was a disaster… I spent most of my
childhood in hospitals. There came a stage when the family was almost down.
We met a pir sahab at that time. It is inexplicable. It just happened. My
idea of God coincided with all this. Dileep became Allah Rakha Rahman, his
mother Kasturi is now Kareema Begum. Okay, this was something that was
 bound to happen, he says.

Soon, Rahman left his home to study music at Trinity College of Music,
Oxford University. With a degree in Western Classical Music, he returned to
Madras to join an Ad agency in 1987. He wrote some 300 jingles for radio and
TV commercials – winning several industry awards. He also released his first
album of Muslim devotional songs, titled Deen Isai Malai and the English
album, Set Me Free. Both went unnoticed in the market.

 *Rising from 'Roja' *

The maestro's debut in the film industry came in 1992 at the age of 26.
Director Mani Ratnam, approached Rahman to compose the score and soundtrack
for Tamil film Roja. The music broke all the records and went on to become
Time's top ten music tracks of all time. It also fetched him first National
Film Award for best music direction, an award that was given for the first
time to a debutante music director.

The success of Roja was followed by Tamil movies like Bombay (dubbed in
Hindi), Kadhalan, Indira, Minsaara Kanavu, Muthu and Love Birds, which
gained him accolades even from non-Tamil fans who swayed to the freshness of
tracks and cared little about the literals.

Rahman's versatility in classical, folk, jazz, reggae, soft rock and other
styles in his pieces soon made him stand out in the dull Hindi cinema which
still used the quintessential 'dholak' for the 'taal' and was also reluctant
 to experiment with new technologies.

It was maverick director Ram Gopal Varma's movie Rangeela, which gave
Rahman his first break in Bollywood in 1995. Though the movie failed to
create waves at box-office, people danced and hummed to the tunes of famous
title tracks – 'Rangeela Re' and 'Tanha Tanha'. The film later went on to
become Rahman's biggest hit and the most original score of that year.

 *A true experimentalist*

Rahman has many a hit movie scores, some were even re-made in other
 languages.

His prowess in South film industry is unparalleled. But his music score in
Hindi films like 'Bombay', 'Rangeela', 'Dil Se', 'Lagaan', 'Yuva', Saathiya'
and 'Rang De Basanti' are timeless. For each time you listen to a 'Tu Hi
 Re', 'Ae Nazneen Suno

Just like the song is so heart warming and easy on the ears, the
picturisation did it justice and one feels the same way as they would even
if they listened to the song only. The whole castle setting, mixed with the
short classical dances – enacting the meaning of the lyrics, the pretty
clothes, and the chemistry of the two leads were just perfect!

From correspondents in Maharashtra, India, 09:30 PM IST

Few of his fans may be aware that music maestro Allah Rakha Rahman, or A.R.
Rahman as he is better known, started his career composing jingles for
advertising films.

That was 20 years ago. Today, as he enters the 43rd year of his life, the
eminently gifted Rahman is credited with creating one of the richest
legacies of film music any modern music director has ever crafted.

After starting with Mani Ratnam's 'Roja' (1992), Rahman never looked back as
he effortlessly wielded the baton. The songs in the bi-lingual movie,
including the title track 'Roja Jaaneman' and 'Dil Hai Chhotasa' became a
national rage and topped the popularity charts.

'Roja' earned him the National Award for best music composer - the first
ever time a debutant has bagged this honour.

Rahman followed it up with his first exclusive Hindi compositions for
'Rangeela' (1995) and proved that he understood the taste of the Hindi
audiences. Rahman offered them new sounds, unheard-of tunes and compositions
that catapulted him to the top rung of Bollywood.

Rahman, who has redefined contemporary Indian music, continued his colossal
stride over Bollywood with memorable compositions for movies like 'Bombay',
'Dil Se', 'Taal', '1947-Earth', 'Pukar', 'Lagaan', 'Zubeida', 'Meenaxi',
'The Legend of Bhagat Singh', 'Water', 'Yuva', 'Swades', 'Rang De Basanti'
and many others.

He has a longer list of hits in Tamil films.

In 1997, Sony Music signed him to compose 'Vande Mataram' on the occasion of
the golden jubilee of India's Independence. In 2001, the legendary Andrew
Lloyd Webber invited him to collaborate on his smashing musical, 'Bombay
Dreams,' which opened to packed houses in London and ran non-stop for two
years.

According to an estimate, Rahman's music has sold over 100 million copies
worldwide, making him one of the most saleable composers in India.

Born as Dileep Singh on Jan 6, 1966, the school dropout from
Chennaihttp://www.indiaenews.com/chennai/belonged to a musically
inclined family.

He started learning to play piano at the age of four. At nine, his father
R.K. Shekhar, a music arranger, expired, leaving on his young shoulders the
burden of supporting the family.

Initially, Rahman - who would later be hailed by Time magazine as the Mozart
of Madras - started out by hiring his father's musical instruments to make
ends meet. He cut his musical teeth at 11 in south India's famous music
director Ilayaraja's orchestra as a keyboard player.

With Ilayaraja and subsequently in other troupes, including those of tabla
maestro Zakir Hussain, Vishwanathan-Ramamurthy and L. Shankar, the young
Rahman travelled around the world.

In between he won a coveted degree in western classical music from the
Oxford University. It was around this time that he became deeply inspired by
Sufism and converted to Islam.

'I am a deeply spiritual person. Sufism is about love, love for a fellow
human, love for all-round humanity and ultimately love for god. For me, it's
where music and spiritualism meet - at durgahs, you will find qawwalis.
That's my inspiration,' he once said.

Deeply involved in charitable causes in India and abroad, Rahman was
appointed World Health Organisation (WHO) global ambassador of Stop TB
Partnership in 2004.

Few of his fans may be aware that music maestro Allah Rakha Rahman,
or A.R.
Rahman as he is better known, started his career composing jingles for
 advertising films.

That was 20 years ago. Today, as he enters the 43rd year of his
life, the
eminently gifted Rahman is credited with creating one of the richest
legacies of film music any modern music director has ever crafted.

After starting with Mani Ratnam's 'Roja' (1992), Rahman never looked
back as
he effortlessly wielded the baton. The songs in the bi-lingual movie,
including the title track 'Roja Jaaneman' and 'Dil Hai Chhotasa'
became a
national rage and topped the popularity charts.

'Roja' earned him the National Award for best music composer - the first
ever time a debutant has bagged this honour.

Rahman followed it up with his first exclusive Hindi compositions for
'Rangeela' (1995) and proved that he understood the taste of the Hindi
audiences. Rahman offered them new sounds, unheard-of tunes and
compositions
that catapulted him to the top rung of Bollywood.

Rahman, who has redefined contemporary Indian music, continued his
colossal
stride over Bollywood with memorable compositions for movies like
'Bombay',
'Dil Se', 'Taal', '1947-Earth', 'Pukar', 'Lagaan', 'Zubeida', 'Meenaxi',
'The Legend of Bhagat Singh', 'Water', 'Yuva', 'Swades', 'Rang De
Basanti'
 and many others.

He has a longer list of hits in Tamil films.

In 1997, Sony Music signed him to compose 'Vande Mataram' on the
occasion of
the golden jubilee of India's Independence. In 2001, the legendary
Andrew
Lloyd Webber invited him to collaborate on his smashing musical, 'Bombay
Dreams,' which opened to packed houses in London and ran non-stop
for two
 years.

According to an estimate, Rahman's music has sold over 100 million
copies
worldwide, making him one of the most saleable composers in India.

Born as Dileep Singh on Jan 6, 1966, the school dropout from
 Chennaihttp://www.indiaenews.com/chennai/belonged to a musically
 inclined family.

He started learning to play piano at the age of four. At nine, his
father
R.K. Shekhar, a music arranger, expired, leaving on his young
shoulders the
 burden of supporting the family.

Initially, Rahman - who would later be hailed by Time magazine as
the Mozart
of Madras - started out by hiring his father's musical instruments
to make
ends meet. He cut his musical teeth at 11 in south India's famous music
director Ilayaraja's orchestra as a keyboard player.

With Ilayaraja and subsequently in other troupes, including those of
tabla
maestro Zakir Hussain, Vishwanathan-Ramamurthy and L. Shankar, the young
 Rahman travelled around the world.

In between he won a coveted degree in western classical music from the
Oxford University. It was around this time that he became deeply
inspired by
 Sufism and converted to Islam.

'I am a deeply spiritual person. Sufism is about love, love for a fellow
human, love for all-round humanity and ultimately love for god. For
me, it's
where music and spiritualism meet - at durgahs, you will find qawwalis.
That's my inspiration,' he once said.

Deeply involved in charitable causes in India and abroad, Rahman was
appointed World Health Organisation (WHO) global ambassador of Stop TB
 Partnership in 2004.

Hi all,
Tonight whole of IIM Calcutta and many people from top notch B-schools
celebrated ARR's B'day in a grand manner. We had the annual B-School fest
Intaglio and SIVAMANI performed in a event.
Suddenly in the middle he started playing HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU for some
time. People were confused and he took the mike and wished our boss happy
B'day. The whole Auditorium stood up and wished him. It was followed by three
rocking numbers of ARR (TAAL, RDB and YUVA). The reaction was mind blowing.
Not to mention, Sivamani rocked the night... My god he didnt stop for even a
minute while performing..He used Suitcase, utensils etc and the sound he
generated from these non musical instruments were mind blowing...Feeling really
great and wonderful after the event.

Happy B'day Rahman!

By Moviebuzz
Sunday, 06 January , 2008, 17:08

We at sify.com wish A.R Rahman a Happy Birthday (January 6). Rahman is
the magician of music as his music simply mesmerizes.

2007 was a milestone in Rahman's career.15 years after he made his
debut with Mani Ratnam classic Roja (1992), which won him his first
National Award, it was selected by the TIME magazine as the top 10
Movie Soundtracks of all time. Rahman has revolutionised Indian
film music giving it a more global feel and appeal, especially with the
teen listeners.

And last year Rahman made a fantastic comeback and once again occupied
the throne in Tamil film audio sales. In 2007, the highest selling Tamil
audio number 1 was Sivaji and number 2 Azhagiya Tamil Magan, both had
music by the maestro! In Hindi his Guru featured in the top five albums
of the year. Hear his soul stirring Jodha Akbar music!

The views expressed in the article are the author's and not of Sify.com.

[arr] Fw: [Rajinifans.com] ROBOT Flash 1 - Budget, language, producers, release date frm Economic Times!!

2008-01-06 Thread Jon
Friends,

Today Economic Times has come out with first ever authenticated scoop regarding
ROBOT, its budget, release language and Sivaji's success.

 - - - - - -
- - - - - - -

Rajni unseats SRK to swing Robot
D Govardan CHENNAI

DIGGING for gold appears to have become superstar Rajinikanth' s favourite
pastime. As if the Rs 80-crore blockbuster Sivaji — The Boss was not enough,
filmdom's money spinning hero has now signed up for India's costliest movie.
Pegged at Rs 100 crore, director Shankar's Robot, a science fiction film, will
see Rajni replace King of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan as hero.

London-based Ayngaran International, in which Kishore Lulla-owned Eros
International picked up a controlling stake last July, is to produce the film.
Robot will be released in five languages for a global audience. This dream
project of Shankar was also to be produced by SRK's Red Chillies Entertainment.
In fact, last year, the film had been planned featuring filmdom's other cash
king Shah Rukh Khan. However, owing to differences between Shankar and SRK on
the creative front, as acknowledged by the latter in recent statements, the
film was dropped about two months ago.

Observers say, given Shankar's penchant for large canvas presentations the
cost of production of Robot could even cross the Rs 100-crore mark, setting a
new Indian record. Ayngaran and Eros Multimedia will be jointly producing
Robot featuring Rajinikanth and directed by Shankar. The formal agreements will
be signed soon, Ayngaran International CEO Rohan Manickavasagar told ET on
Friday from London.

Film to be released in five languages
Eros and Ayngaran had together distributed Sivaji globally, which is said
to have grossed between Rs 150 crore to Rs 170 crore from both the domestic and
overseas markets. Robot will be a joint production. The film will take
anywhere between 18 to 24 months for completion and will be produced at a cost
in excess of Rs 100 crore, Mr Manickavasagar said.

The film will be made in Tamil, but will be released in five languages,
including Hindi and Telugu, besides a couple of other regional languages. It
will also have stars from Bollywood. But these finer details will be finalised
in due course, he added.

Shankar had originally wanted to do Robot with Kamal Hassan over five years
ago for Media Dreams, the now defunct film arm of Chennaibased Pentamedia
Graphics. Somewhere down the line, even Hritik Roshan's name came up for
serious consideration. But Rajini appears to have swung it yet again.

With Rajinikanth becoming a national phenomenon after Sivaji, which also
generated interests in international markets, Robot is expected to be marketed
in a big way overseas too. Tamil films have a huge market in the UK, USA,
Canada, France, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka,
South Africa, Australia and the Middle-East.

Excellent! Yay for orchestral music!

Just one question though- what's with the spelling of Musiq? In the website
it's spelt as music (thankfully) but I've seen you and Vijay refer to it as
Musiq for quite some time now.

Re: [arr] Onnjal 1999 ?

2008-01-06 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Oonjal is a bootleg album by Ramiy Records, the Europe-based Tamil music label.
THe songs were based in their entirety on the soundtrack of Doli Saja Ke Rakhna
and was attributed to ARR, although he was neither involved in nor consented to
the project. It was because of this release that the makers of Jodi, who had
obtained rights to use the music of DSKR in Tamil had to rush out a soundtrack
for Jodi even before the production of the movie was launched.

Touching every cell, not to forget any,
Breaking the cuffs chaining my life,

Setting your rhythms as my heart beat,
Breathing your chords as my life-line,
Living on your tunes, that complete me,

[arr] Rajinikanth, Deepika to pair for Robot

2008-01-06 Thread Arun
Shankar’s dream has become a reality. His dream project is finally taking shape
and the actor if the sources are correct is none other than the Superstar
himself. Shankar could not have imagined a better start for his magnum opus.
The grapevine is abuzz now that Superstar Rajini is paired with none other
than Deepika Padukone for Robot. Deepika made waves in bollywood with her debut
movie Om Shanthi Om.
The movie Robot will be produced on a 100 crore budget by Ayngaran
International and Eros Multimedia. The sucess team of Shivaji which includes
Shankar, Rajini and A.R. Rahman are all set to repeat their magic again in
Robot. The rest of the crew needs to be still decided. No official announcement
has been made yet. The announcement is expected to be during the silver jubilee
celebrations of Shivaji the boss movie. This is going to be a never seen before
Sci-Fi thriller for the Tamil audience.
It can be recalled that earlier Sharukh Khan and Shankar were supposed to
team up for Robot and later dropped out due to “creative differences”. Many big
names like Ajith Kumar and Amir Khan have also been rumoured to be associated
with this movie Robot.

[arr] Rahman's birthday gift to music lovers!

2008-01-06 Thread $*$ PaVaN $*$
Here is an rediff article on rahman launching his music school..they have
mentioned arrahman.com at the end..

  -

A R Rahman celebrated his 42nd birthday on Sunday like he always does --
quietly. But there came a big announcement later in the day which was as a
pleasant surprise to all the music lovers.
The surprise was one of the musical genius' long cherished dream -- to launch
a music conservatory, which he did. Going by the name KM Music Conservatory,
the instititution is an attempt to recreate a world-class orchestra for the
enjoyment of the people of India.
Synthesizers and electronic sounds played a significant role in the
evolution of music in the 80's and 90's. As this fresh sound captivated
listeners, they began to lose appreciation and interest in live classical
compositions. Rahman said in a press release.
He was also worried that if the trend of listening only to synthesizers and
electronic sounds continues, future generations would be deprived of the joy,
that is, live classical music.
Currently Indian composers have to go abroad to find orchestras for
recording. The vision of KM Music Conservatory is to eliminate this obstacle
and provide an exemplary orchestra here in India. I feel, as a modern classical
musician, having the knowledge of both music performance and music technology
is invaluable. Only having the skill to perform an instrument may not
necessarily be lucrative, however having that skill as well as excellent music
production capabilities will ensure many more career opportunities and
financial security. That way they learn to use the best of both worlds. Rahman
further added.
The KM Music Conservatory and Audio Media Education will be India's first
Apple authorised training centre, and it will be located at Chennai. The
training centre will initially function next to his studio but eventually will
shift to a bigger campus on the outskirts of the city.
The conservatory faculty will include professors and musicians from both
India and abroad, who will educate students in Indian and Western Classical
music.
For the first batch that starts in the coming academic year (2008), the
school will audition singers and students who play flute, oboe, clarinet,
French horn, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, double bass, and
percussion.
Courses include Western Vocal and Instrumental Performance, Indian Classical
Vocal, Western and Indian Music Theory, Music Appreciation, Ear Training,
Piano, Audio Engineering, an Apple certified course in Logic Pro, and a
Digidesign certified course in Pro Tools.
In addition to this, students can also audition for the professional KM Music
Symphony Orchestra after the completion of the programme.
However, Rahman's role does not end with the school; the A R Rahman
Foundation Scholarships will be offered to deserving students.

[arr] ANNOUNCMENT OF KM MUSIC CONSERVATORY

2008-01-06 Thread Vithur

**
*Rahman announces launch of music conservatory *

**
Meera Srinivasan

*It promises to offer a holistic programme in music *

*A.R.Rahman *

CHENNAI: Guess what celebrated music composer A.R. Rahman decided to gift
aspiring musicians on his birthday on Sunday? – A music conservatory that
promises to offer a holistic programme in music and music technology.

It has been the musician's dream to establish such an institute and he has,
on a few occasions, spoken of this wish. Rahman, who turned 42 on Sunday,
was obviously delighted that this dream was taking shape. All of us,
musicians, have felt the need for such training. Most of us had to take the
round-about way. This initiative will help aspirants move ahead faster, he
told *The Hindu*.

The KM Music Conservatory and Audio Media Education, said to be India's
first Apple-authorised training centre, will initially function at a
facility next to his studio in Kodambakkam. Later, it would be shifted to a
campus in the outskirts of the city. We are planning to start the programme
after May, when the new academic year begins, he said.

Courses will include Western Vocal and Instrumental Performance, Indian
Classical Vocal, Western and Indian Music Theory, Music Appreciation, Ear
Training, Piano, Audio Engineering, an Apple certified course in Logic Pro,
and a Digidesign certified course in Pro Tools.

Many of the instrumentalists who play today belong to my father's
generation. While younger musicians go for the keyboard or the software
used, not many take to playing a violin or a brass, he said. The vision of
KM Music Conservatory is to eliminate this obstacle and provide an exemplary
orchestra here in India. The faculty at the conservatory will include
professors from India and aboard, and other musicians who will train
students in Indian and Western Classical music.

The school will soon audition students who play flute, oboe, clarinet,
French horn, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, double bass and
percussion. Students also have the opportunity to audition for the
professional KM Music Symphony Orchestra on completion of the programme. For
