Re: [arr] Time now to accept ARR - Ashutosh combo as No. 1 in India - My opinion

2008-02-23 Thread arr pavan
Dude ! you need not go to the extent of saying insult all. It is just the
discussion about Ashu yet to give dimensions that Mani has given without Arr
with Arr. True to the fact mani ratnam has proved on more good movies with any
music director. Why left Pagal Nilavu his debut movie before Mouna Ragam. PN is
a hit. Mani is highly budget conscious do not experiment with
larger-than-life movies.

I think whatever the outcome of Rahman-Ashu combo...it's totally
Rahman's
contribution... if u go for Ashu-'s 1st directorial venture (Bazi
starring
Amir Khan) am sure u'll be laughing at hearing the songs and BGMs.

Ashu killed a beautiful song called Yeh jo desh in Swadesh with
poor
 picturisation.

Mani's thinking is far beyond than Ashu's... I think no one other
than Mani
can give an idea to compose songs in Chor Chor/thiruda thiruda.

The BGM of Dil Se...the song concept for Dile Se re, satrangee
re
 its like awesome.
Take any song from Roja... in India rukmani rukmani is 1st song
of its
kind... and think about the picturization.
 What abt iruvar/Kannathil
muthamittal/Bombay/Alepaudey/GURU??
The best thing of mani-arr combo is the freshness and new blend...
something never before heard... be it songs or bmg...so
innovative

Innivation also noted in RDB BGMs..
I am telling u the diff between Ashu and Rakesh mehera in terms of
 innovation:

The song Ghanana ghanana... the part Mana dharkaye bijuria in
3 times
(lyrics may be wrong)...its called a Tihai in hindustani
classical... but
what Rahman did in the last phrase he added mana mana dharkaye
bijuriawhich is technically not correct or out of beat... but
musically
awesome and innovative... but I am sure...this is coming
completely out of
Rahman's musical mind...no contribution from Ashu.

Now consider the song Khalbali ziddi... a totally misfit
song to the
Rebels in 1940's India... but Ziddi.. portion is being played
when Bhagat
Sing and his followers are fasting here Rakesh is injecting
the song in
 right place

Also take the moment the patriots are hiding and British police
chasing...and a rock kind of guiter is in background...just like
telling
I'll break free...this is innovation, again Rahman is injected by
 Director

but in Ashu's movies songs and bgms are contemporary... real good
 compositions but not surprising.

Anyway... all these are my personal feelings...

the reason why Ashutosh-ARR combo works well is because
CONSCIOUSLY INTENTIONALLY Ashutosh makes the movie with plenty
of scope

for example. consider a scene from Lagaan.
Indian batsman gets hit on the head.
Ashu intentionally shows reactions from atleast 4 or 5
characters for well
over a second, with closeup of their faces.
This definitely needs a good BGM.

  another example from Swades.
SRK stares at the open sky for a few seconds upto a minute.
There HAS to be a BGM there..

with Mani, things are more casual - less cinematic (may be
termed as
  mature).
But still ARR has lot of chances for good BGM, but not so much
as the
  SOngs itself.
Mani gives ARR a great chance for scoring songs - that can be
heard with
the movie as well as without any idea of the Movie..

with Ashu, its more blended with the movie..
I'm not comparing Ashu Mani , but it will be appropriate to
conclude
  that

  - Ashu will make a great director for a real 'musical'. (ARR
should use
him if he plans to make a musical in India).
  - Mani will make a great director for fact based, closer to life
style
  movies.

But its too early to judge which combo is better :))

but thats a technical thing. the songs r just too good. at first it
was all weird ebcause of the style of music (symphonic, orchestral,
celtic folk). now on repeated hearing, they r wonderful. the tracks by
ARR are out of this world. the melodies are amazing. he even managed
to squeeze in indian melodies (raagas) in there only in some parts so
it doesnt become indian sounding. but the work by ARR is surely
staring at me. altho only one track (song of hope) is entirely by ARR,
even in rest of the tracks 80-90% is done by arr including the
melodies and most part of orchestration. it seems that christopher
(who shares credits with ARR for the songs) was just a musical
coordinator and an co-composer for the orchestra. ARRs sound all over
the place. a must buy. will post a detailed review later. go order it!

[arr] Lyrics of Shauk Hai from Guru

2008-02-23 Thread Vithur
http://bollywoodtadka.com/2008/02/10/flashback-chartbuster-lyrics-song-%e2%80%98shauk-hai%e2%80%99-from-the-movie-guru/

May be this was posted earlier
**
*Movie* – Guru
*Cast* – Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty, R. Madhavan,
Vidya Balan
*Director* – Mani Ratnam
*Music Director* – A.R. Rahman
*Song* – 'Shauk hai'
*Lyrics* – Gulzar
*Singer* – Sowmya Rao

*Tadka spice* - While many of our readers would be surprised on this short
poem's lyrics, we are sure that you'll rediscover it's beauty once you
listen to this background score number from Guru.

sansanee naavelon ka…
ye ishq ke baavalon ka…
sansanee naavelon…
ye ishq ke baavalon…
barf se…
khelte…
baadalon ka…
shauk hai…

raat ka… shauk hai….
raat ki… saundhi si….
khamoshi ka…
shauk hai….

ho… shauk hai…

subha ki… raushni…
bezubaan subha ki o gungunati
raushni ka… shauk hai…
ho… shauk hai…
ho… shauk hai…

*Sowmya Rao* may have sung a lot of numbers which became immensely popular
in her career. But when ahe teamed up with *A.R. Rahman* to give her voice
to these magically beautiful lines, little could she have known that this
'song', if one may call it so, would add a gem of an effect to the
background score of *Guru*. The lyrics by *Gulzar*, were used to portray the
dreams of a character dying too early for her age, played by *Vidya Balan*,
and explored her various shauks (hobbies), right from reading sensational
novels, to the silent freshness of the morning sunrays. The song might be
short, but it leaves you asking for far much more. After all, life's best
things come in small packages! Enjoy :)

Dudes ! You cannot compare give the results. Mani Ashu are entirely
for different themes. Mani did not make any period movies so far. Same in
the case of Dirs. Shankar, Rajeev Menon, K.S.Ravikumar, K.Balachandar,
Kadhir all done only social movies with Arr. Mani-Arr above said other
combos are always success in terms of social/real movies. Wheres Ashu-Arr
combo suits only for period movies of lagaan JA. I dont think Swades did
wonders like lagaan or JA. There we get, Ashu-Arr combo still to give a
great break in terms of social movies to equalize those tamil direcotrs. On
the other hand i am wondering how it would be if these tamil directors work
up on some fictional period themes. I feel period movies are not tamil
 directors' cup of tea.

[arr] Rehman Takes you in to the past - Magic of Jodha Akbar Music

2008-02-23 Thread madhubunga
Dear Rahman Lovers,

I just watched Jodha Akbar and its an amazing movie well Let me
change it and put it as Musical Epic.

I loved the way .. Rahman took control of the movie and gave great
feel to it, I must say none other then Rahman could match the caliber
of the movie add value.

I just like to let all the others who are yet to watch the movie do
not go for the visual go for the Music BGM its like you are
listening to someone who lived in that Era, Rahman takes you in to the
past.

My favorites BGMS from the movie
- Well I must say that movie has it all but the followings scene are
Exceptionally Amazing
 - Grand Opening of the Movie ( SOnu Nigam voice and bachan takes over
naration )
 - Introduction to different kingdoms in Mughal Region
 - Introduction of Akbar / Many variations through out the movi for akbar
 - Man Mohana Pathos Version / Variations
 - Drum Bit while Aish Hrithik Sword fight
 - Music at the battle field
 - Variations on Jashne Bahar
 - Music bits potraying akbars helpless situations within his family
 - Interval Bit
These are some Exceptional pieces of music which you have never heard
on any historical epics like I said Rahman is the hero of this movie
behind the screen.

Thank you Rahman for another Treat !!!

Regards
Madhu

Re: [arr] Director Krishna 's experiences with ARR

Director Krishna directed his debut movie Sillenu Oru Kaadhal, and got a
chance to work with ARR in his very first movie .

 1. How did you become a Director ?

It was a long cherished dream of about 12 years . But the starting point
of me becoming a director was because of Rahman Sir. I didnt have any idea
of whom to start this film from , and how to go about it . Kalaipuli Dhanu
was the producer. One day, Dhanu Sir called me and told me that an
appointment with Rahman Sir has been sought and he told me to come. I was so
happy to listen to him saying that as I will never know if such a time would
ever happen in the future. It was a very rainy day, and my bike was also
giving me some problems. I came to ARR studio fully drenched. Rahman sir
told that he would listen to the script another day.But I was ready with
the script. And also asked if we could finish it in 15 minutes, as he had
some other commitment to follow. But I took 2 1/2 hrs of his time. He didnt
tell anything, and even switched off his mobile and was listening.

After 2 1/2 hrs, he told to call Dhanu ( Producer ) and asked When can
we have the composing ?. And that day cannot be forgotten in my life

First I met Rahman sir, and then only was the script finalised with Actor
Surya. we did the recording for Munbe Vaa song .

 2. When did you get to hear Rahman Sir songs ?

right from the time Roja , I have been liking Rahman Sir song.

The first song that Rahman Sir gave was Munbe Vaa, and next was
Machaikaari. Picturisation of Rahman Sir songs was a tough challenge for me.
He composes music so superbly, and its a real challenge to picturise them
well. When I had discussion with Rahman Sir, regarding Munbe Vaa song, I
told him the desire of picturising it in that way. So Rahman Sir visualised
it before I could visualise and gave me that wonderful song.

 3. Other experiences with ARR ??

Apart from his music, which no can fathom, he is a very good human being.
The thought that I had about him at a distance , got transformed into an
admiration, when I went near him. A man of such heights, behaving like a
very ordinary person increased my admiration levels. He sees everybody as a
human being, irrespective of whosover he may be and whatsoever he may be. I
am also trying my level best to be like ARR

 4. David Lee - Fav Hollywood Director

 5. future Film - Yen Eppadi Mayakinnai - Its a film produced by Motherland
 Pictures .

 6. Fav Songs of ARR - Kaadhal Rojave, Vennilave ( Minsarava kanavu ) ,
 Maduraikku Pogadhadee ( ATM ) . Athiradhee ( SIVAJEE )

A director must be a good experiencer of music. He should be able to
experience it first. ARR finished all the songs of SOK within 30 minutes.
The first and foremost tune of ARR was liked by me . ARR told me I do not
know. I liked working with your team. It makes me feel energetic.

Fav Songs in Hindi - Roobaroo ( RDB ) , chaiyya chaiyya, Tanha tanha (
 Rangeela ) , Chinamma Chilakkama ( Meenaxi )

Yen Eppadi Mayakinnai - Future film; a Musical Film. I wanted ARR for
this. But he is too busy. But If I approach him, he will not say NO. But
I do not want to pressurise him for this. But I wanted ARR to light a candle
for my film, as I am inroducing a New Music Director. ARR asked me Tell me
; What help you want. I seeked ARR's Blessings for which he told You will
surely become a good director. Do not worry. My prayers are always there .

JodhAa Akbar is such a brilliant film that we can say this film beats
any Hollywood film.

Ashutosh Gowariker is a director with a great vision. The actors,
photography, sets, costumes, jewelry, music, story, screenplay
dialogues are par excellence. The time has come that India will rule
the film industry in the world. It is so sad to see that some
political parties are protesting against this film. This film has
nothing against the Rajputs. We have always read in our history books
that Akbar married Jodhabai to reduce conflicts and have an alliance
with Rajputs.

It is evident that the people protesting are paid hooligans and have
no knowledge of the content of the film. It seems that the issue is
political. And the government is not able maintain law and order in
the country as we can see in the case of Raj Thackeray and the film
Jodhaa Akbar. It is a very sad situation and we as Indians should
support this film.

Sumptuous Mughal epic puts love and religion to the test
 Published:Feb 24, 2008
--

LARGER THAN LIFE: Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan play the leads
in Jodhaa Akbar, Ashutosh Gowarikar's epic which suggests that love and
worship are intricately linked

JODHAA AKBAR (8/10): A fine line separates a good filmmaker from an
exceptional one. The exceptional one understands the value of paucity,
realising that too much of a good thing doesn't necessarily equate to a good
thing.

For all of Ashutosh Go- warikar's successes, this remains his single big-
gest failing. Had he lopped an hour off this film, it would have been
sensational.

It is very watchable, but too much time is spent fleshing out characters
that have little say in the eventual outcome. The battle scenes at the start
are also overdone.

By the time Gowarikar gets to the relationship between Mughal Emperor Akbar
(Hrithik Roshan) and Rajput princess Jodhaa (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan),
valuable time has frittered away. From then on, the pace lifts, resulting in
some inspired moments as the narrative becomes more thought-provoking and
entertaining.

Although this is not a chest-thumpingly brilliant film, it has been
sumptuously assembled, magnificently shot and presented on a
larger-than-life scale that makes for grand cinema.

Full marks to Gowarikar for having the courage to tackle the epic genre, and
while the historical accuracy of the events is open to debate, one never
doubts his intentions. It is in the psychology of the film that there is so
much to admire.

National unity has always been a big driver for Gowarikar, and he addresses
it with sincerity. In Lagaan, in which a group of villagers whip the British
at their own game of cricket, he dismantled class and religious barriers. In
Swades, a more modern group of villagers were empowered to fend for
themselves.

The relationship between Akbar and Jodhaa is used to explain what inspired
him to adopt the concept of a universal religion, Deen-e-elahi, whereby one
set of beliefs does not carry more weight than another .

One thing about this film that is beyond question is that its heart is in
the right place. It suggests that love and worship are intricately linked
and that love for the pleasure of God is in itself an act of worship.

Akbar's love for Jodhaa makes him more tolerant and more aware of his
subjects' needs. As a result, he becomes a more just and more beloved ruler.
The narrative does not deny his political astuteness or that he manoeuvred
situations for his benefit, but it shows him as a man of great vision and
greater empathy.

In last week's Business Times, branding guru Simon Barrow said successful
companies had staff that loved them, and 400 years ago Akbar employed the
same approach. His people loved him so much that they bestowed the title of
Akbar, meaning great, on him. Jodhaa is credited with bringing it about.

With his kingdom expanding , the young emperor encounters resistance from
the Rajputs, a proud people who would not succumb without a fight. War
appears imminent, but to avoid it, one of the Rajput kings (Kulbushan
Kharbanda) goes against the wishes of his colleagues and agrees to cede his
territory to Akbar, provided he takes Jodhaa's hand in marriage.

She's a remarkable woman, incredibly good-looking and of great integrity.
The proposal does not please her, but she agrees on two conditions: that she
will not change her faith and that she'll be allowed to practise her rituals
in the palace grounds.

Akbar realises that acceding to her request will have serious repercussions,
but a thirst for success and a growing admiration for this feisty woman lead
him to agree. Love isn't packaged into an arranged marriage and needs time
to develop, so Akbar must exercise patience before she warms to him. But
just as that begins to happen, some of his advisers conspire to drive a
wedge between them.

Roshan gets under the skin of his character and is an extremely convincing
Akbar. He is at the soul of the film, while Aish is its heart. She has the
regal presence of a princess in a role that combines her scorching good
looks with a steely determination, making her character easy to fall in love
with .

Ila Arun as Akbar's wet-mother, Maham Anga, is the other stand-out
performance.

AR Rehman's music is given a presentation befit- ting it. The emperor's
song, Azeem o Shaan, is magnificent, while the two romantic songs are
sumptuous. But the most stirring tune is the quawali Maula mere Maula, which
shows a great understanding of the Sufi dance attributed to Maulana Rumi.
It's superb.

The cocktail of spirituality, romance and Mughal politics combine to make a
marvellous statement on national unity that is relevant in a world where
religion is abused to drive wedges between communities. For that reason, and
for advocating love as a means of winning over the hearts and minds of
