I did NOT like the Music played in the theatrical trailer!! I dont find any
originality in it. (Iam not saying that Rahman copied, coz, Iam the ONLY
person, who get furious and angry, and abuse the person who brings copy
accusations against Rahman. I mean to say that I have heard NOTHING new in
the tune, which I havent heard before)

[arr] Great Singers Never to Have Sung For Rehman

2009-08-13 Thread Arun Krishnan
Hi,

It was when i was listening to Lukka Chupi (Rang De Basanti) by Lata
Mangeshkar that a thought struck me of the great singers who have /
could not sing for Rahman, and how would his compositions have been if
they were to sing for them.

One singer i would have loved to listen would be MS Subbalakshmi
singing to his tunes. Considering the magic that he created for Lata
Mangeshkar in Tu hi bharosa and luka chipi, it would have been a
remarkable combination, with Rahman using MS's subtle gamakams into
his composition.

Would like to know your views as well...

Hope this was not discussed earlier.

I was also thinking about this since the D-day (when the song was
nominated).

Any my conclusion is:

As most of the oscar voters and judges and vote-compilers were not
knowing hindi, so they couldn't understand what the lyrics are saying,
and the award for lyrics went to gulzar saab just as a technicality
because best song award goes to MD/ lyricists both.

Now the cake of the reasoning :-
And as most of them might not be understanding Spanish either, they
might have thought for the spanish part that it is some regional dialect
of Hindi, so they didn't think to mention the Spanish lyricist.

He he he.

GMTJai ho! Rahman holds his Slumdog Millionare Oscars (Best Score and Best
Original Song) at a post-award party in Los Angeles this February. Mario
Anzuoni / ReutersIn less than 20 years, AR Rahman has come to dominate Indian
popular music by breaking all of its borders. S Subramanian reads a new
biography of Bollywood’s great assimilator.

AR Rahman: The Musical Storm
Kamini Mathai
Penguin India
Dh38

The Indian composer AR Rahman, recent winner of a pair of Academy Awards for
his jaunty songs in Slumdog Millionaire, has over the years demonstrated a keen
talent for reaching new, rapidly appreciative audiences. This talent is
typically discussed in reference to his work outside India, which began early
this century when he collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the saccharine
West End confection Bombay Dreams, pairing reworked versions of some of his
most outstanding songs from the 1990s with some of his worst original music.
Since then, his work has featured on Broadway and in Chinese and Hollywood
films. All this, particularly the Slumdog Oscars, has made Rahman the first
Indian composer to find substantial audiences beyond the already large world of
his country’s film industry.
But Rahman’s first, more impressive feat of border-crossing occurred much
earlier, when he became the first Indian composer with a pan-Indian audience.
So often is Bollywood used as a symbol of the entire Indian film industry that
it is easy to overlook the country’s diversity of other regional cinema.
Outside Mumbai, other sizeable film industries operate like self-contained
planets, producing movies in the languages of Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam
and Bengali. The borders between the four south Indian cinemas are, for actors,
directors and composers, particularly fluid; the border between south Indian
cinema and Hindi cinema has, because of deeper linguistic differences,
traditionally been far less permeable.
Even music, that much-vaunted universal language, sat for long in decidedly
regional compartments. The music of the Bollywood and Tamil film industries may
have shared roots in the Indian seven-note scale, for instance, but they long
ago developed into entirely different sensibilities. In their default modes,
they leaned in different directions: Bollywood toward plaintive romantic or
existential ballads; Tamil music toward raga-based classical or rhythm-heavy
indigenous folk. They used different instruments: the harmonium would have
sounded as odd in Tamil music as the veena in Bollywood. The gulf separating
these genres was a wide one, spanned only by the occasional work of the
occasional composer. Perhaps work on the bridge that now connects them had
tentatively begun in the years before Rahman, but only after he brought power
cranes to the job, completed its construction, and made a few sorties back and
forth did other composers feel consistently
 comfortable doing the same.
Rahman’s debut soundtrack, Roja, released in 1992, provides a classic example
of how his music functions. A song will start simply, with a spare melody and
vocals with power but no apparent ambition to blow the listener away. Within
seconds, that all changes. The melody might enter a dense burst of
orchestration, or yield to a solo by an unexpected instrument, or somehow
reveal itself to be based on a highly classical raga. The vocals might shift
colour, from modest to epic, or from normal singing to Rahman’s own
free-spirited yodels, or from pristine enunciation to humming. The rhythm can
come out of wood blocks, or steel drums, or something that sounds distinctly
like a brass pot being hit with a bunched fist. Mixed together, this reminds
you of reggae one minute, Tamil folk the next, then electronica, then south
Indian classical – all together in one alluring whole.
Nearly 20 years after that debut, Rahman’s music still sparks interesting
(albeit well-worn) debates among music-lovers. What exactly is Rahman’s genius?
Does it lie in his arrangements, his meticulous layering of sounds and voices
as if they were sheets of phyllo? Or in his generous accommodation of styles,
or in his industrious production of catchy hooks? In other words: is he
“simply” a technically savvy producer of commercial music? Or do arrangement,
stylistic flexibility and hook-production fall legitimately under the rubric of
musical artistry, and is Rahman exactly what his legions of devoted fans say he
is: a straight-up compositional genius?
Kamini Mathai’s AR Rahman: The Musical Storm refuses to engage Rahman’s
influence or the music that underpins it, which makes this first attempt at a
biography of the composer a tepid one. This is partly the s

Re: [arr] Ilayaraja takes a 'dig' at A R Rahman

2009-08-13 Thread Aravind AM
Hi,

While many of you were doubting the veracity of the cinesouth article, I had no
doubts IR had made those statements. Having been a hardcore Raja fan before
1992, and having followed all his interviews, I am certain he would make such
jealous statements. This is not something new for him. IR has so often in the
past made absolutely ridiculous speeches, obnoxiously irritating interviews
hurting so many people in the process. In particular, I can never forget one
particular interview of Raja, hosted by veteran TV reporter H.Ramakrishnan, in
late 90s in Doordarshan, in which Raja was at his irritating best, literally
tormenting the interviewer. There was such arrogance, I've never seen in any
celebrity. That was when Iost my respect for Raja, totally! How shocked I was
back then, seeing my icon (till then) behave in such an immature manner!

A few years back, Kumudam too had a feature which compiled some of his
speeches, showing how irritating his speeches become. Why do you think so many
top directors and lyricists broke up with him?

But, even I was waiting for more proof about the latest controversy, to write
to the group. Here it is - an article in Kumudam showing exactly what he said.
http://tinypic.com/r/65ubyf/3
He did make those statements, and I'm not surprised he did.

At first,  I didn't want to write on this thread, as Rahman himself said in his
oscar feliciation speech about fans fighting. Didn't he say that why should the
fans fight, when he is  so friendly with other everyone else? But, IR himself
is never party to such sentiments. IR is such a jealous individual, that he
said he has never heard of a song titled Chinna Chinna Aasai at a time when
Rahman was the toast of the nation!

You should listen to the the song titled "Ulagam Ippo" written, composed and
sung by IR from the new album Azhagar Malai. IR's jealousy comes out clearly in
that. The song lyrics talks about how people leave the country for money and
that those people, though they may be rich, are mean and poor in his view
point! The lyrics further goes that world may change, people may go wherever,
but I'll stay here and serve the country.

Rahman's world fame has woken up the beast of "jealousy against rahman" which
was sleeping within him, for sometime now!

I'm not attacking him but merely retorting back, and clearing the misconception
that Raja is a saint!

IR may be a genius, he may be a great composer, but when it comes to modesty,
level-headedness and humility, he is nowhere near Rahman sir! This is cheapness
to the core!

I'm sure many are going to bounce on me, but I don't care. I'm writing this
from the bottom of my heart and I'm sure I'm not making a mistake!

[arr] Well, here’s one album we are waiting for w ith bated breath.

2009-08-13 Thread adhithi K

Rahman to bring musical legends together for his ambitious album

 Spicezee Bureau

Mumbai:
The Maestro of Madras, AR Rahman, is ready to take on the world. With
fans across the globe chanting to Rahman’s winning anthem ‘Jai Ho’, the
musical prodigy is getting set to treat the global audience with his
biggest international venture till date. Besides mastering musical
scores for several Hollywood projects, Rahman is set to release an
album that will have the who’s who of the music world singing to his
tunes.

According to the latest Bollywood
news, Rahman will team up with the Pussycat Dolls, Mick Jagger, Kylie
Minogue, Joss Stone and several other biggies for his most ambitious
album till date.

Confirming the news, a daily quoted a source as
saying, "Rahman is currently busy with a track for the film ‘Blue’ and
he will then set his eyes on completing his Hollywood venture Couples
Retreat. Post these two assignments, he will take a plunge at doing
this international album that will see him make music for some of the
best singers and artistes of the world. It is a very hush-hush project
as Rahman is now currently meeting with officials who are firming up
the names that will feature in this star-studded album."

As per
insiders, Rahman might be joining forces with singers that he has
already worked with. As of now, he has worked with the Pussycat Dolls
for ‘Jai Ho’, and they are certainly the hot favourites on the list.
Besides the sizzling sirens, Rahman is also very fond of Mick Jagger
and Joss Stone, and has teamed up with them too

“He has also
recently recorded with Kylie Minogue and she is a huge star in the
West. She will definitely be approached for the album. Several other
big names who have expressed their willingness to work with AR Rahman
are also being looked at", added the source.

Besides these big
shots, Rahman has also worked with the Finnish folk music band Varttina
for whom he did the music for the theatrical production, ‘The Lord of
the Rings’. Vanessa Mae could also be in, and also Karen Shenaz David.

Well, here’s one album we are waiting for with bated breath.

AR Rahman and several international artistes to create a special album to
pay homage to the late Michael Jackson...

AR Rahman More Pics

In a matter of few months, AR Rahman has lost two people he looked up to -
sound engineer H Sridhar and Michael Jackson. Sound engineer H Sridhar
passed away in December due to cardiac arrest and the cause of MJ’s death is
still a mystery.

Consequently, Rahman has decided to put together a special album as a mark
of respect to MJ. Of late, Rahman has been making several trips to the US
because his secret dream project is ready to take off. Artistes from all
across the globe will contribute to this album. It is believed that the
album will have a few recreated
songsof
MJ, along with Rahman’s original compositions.

The King of Pop’s untimely and mysterious death unsettled Rahman. A source
said, “The two deaths one after the other made Rahman realise the
uncertainty of life. These tragedies have made him more spiritual.”

Rahman had earlier said, “Artistes and their art lives for ever. My late
sound engineer Sridhar had brought me a video of the premiere of Michael’s
Remember the Time when I was recording the track Kadal Rojave for my first
movieRoja.
That afternoon, that video inspired all of us. Now, there is no
Sridhar and no Jackson anymore.”

Rahman was looking forward to working with MJ whom he had met during the
Oscar Awards in Los Angeles earlier this year. Talking about his meeting
with the pop star, Rahman had said, “MJ was concerned about contemporary
developmental issues such as global warming, wars and their consequences. He
asked me to compose a unity anthem on the lines of We are the World for him.
I nodded in awe.”

When asked about the album, Rahman, who is going LA this week, said
cautiously, “It’s too early to talk about it. Talking about it right now may
jeopardise things.”

It’s good to see you all come here this evening. Usually, we have a big
show with over a hundred musicians and dancers but this is different. We’re
here tonight to only play music,” said AR Rahman as he took the stage for A
R Rahman Unplugged, with singers Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam and percussionist
Sivamani at Delhi’s Siri Fort Auditorium. The concert marked the beginning
of the year-long celebration to commemorate 50 years of Doordarshan.

Rahman took to the piano and Hariharan’s voice soared to the haunting tune
of Tu Hi Re from Bombay, one of their first collaborations together. “In the
early 90s we featured Rahman on Doordarshan and today he is an international
phenomenon. We had to celebrate this occasion with his music,” said Aruna
Sharma, Director General, Doordarshan. And Rahman will be taking his
association with them further with the Big Band, a reality TV talent hunt
for India’s best music group. Conceptualised and headed by Rahman himself,
it is slated to be one of the most exciting talent shows to hit our TV
screens this year.

I knew someone like you was going to pounce. Where in my post does it say that
I'm worked up? Did you read what I said carefully? I explicitly said that I'm
not pre-judging the album, but just keeping my expectations low because the
genre of music that the movie requires is not something that I get too excited
about. I also said that I would listen to the music with an open mind when it
comes out and hope that he can compose a song or two that's more in my line of
preference. I also mentioned that Rahman likes to surprise too. I absolutely
encourage Rahman to be experimental and I hope that this experiment works!

People.. ..please. .

Ya, really cool. Sad that Rahman's name is hardly displayed only in the end
credits.

well did you see the latest interview with AR Rahman on Bollywood hungama.. ?
when the interviewer is asked , the BGM will be great.. ARR politely says that
dont expect much...

How cooly Arr is downplaying the expectation... but we all know.. It would be
mind blowing.. even arr dont want to create too much expectation, want us to go
with minimum expectation and get a bang.. .. Great man!!

Good observation Ramesh. Global Media is deviating from their main purpose of
informing and all they need is making business.

[arr] Rahman's special Album as a mark of respect to MJ.

2009-08-13 Thread Sreekrishnan R
AR Rahman and several international artistes to create a special album to pay
homage to the late Michael Jackson...

In
a matter of few months, AR Rahman has lost two people he looked up to -
sound engineer H Sridhar and Michael Jackson. Sound engineer H Sridhar
passed away in December due to cardiac arrest and the cause of MJ’s
death is still a mystery.

Consequently, Rahman has decided to
put together a special album as a mark of respect to MJ. Of late,
Rahman has been making several trips to the US because his secret dream
project is ready to take off. Artistes from all across the globe will
contribute to this album. It is believed that the album will have a few
recreated songs of MJ, along with Rahman’s original compositions.

The
King of Pop’s untimely and mysterious death unsettled Rahman. A source
said, “The two deaths one after the other made Rahman realise the
uncertainty of life. These tragedies have made him more spiritual.”

Rahman
had earlier said, “Artistes and their art lives for ever. My late sound
engineer Sridhar had brought me a video of the premiere of Michael’s
Remember the Time when I was recording the track Kadal Rojave for my
first movie Roja. That afternoon, that video inspired all of us. Now,
there is no Sridhar and no Jackson anymore.”

Rahman was looking
forward to working with MJ whom he had met during the Oscar Awards in
Los Angeles earlier this year. Talking about his meeting with the pop
star, Rahman had said, “MJ was concerned about contemporary
developmental issues such as global warming, wars and their
consequences. He asked me to compose a unity anthem on the lines of We
are the World for him. I nodded in awe.”

When asked about the
album, Rahman, who is going LA this week, said cautiously, “It’s too
early to talk about it. Talking about it right now may jeopardise
things.”
