CNN-IBN's Entertainment Editor, Rajeev Masand got the music maestro talking about his new Hollywood project and also about working with his children. Rajeev Masand: Your son recently sang for the American film Couple's Retreat which you composed the music for. He has also sung for Bose: The Forgotten Hero? A R Rahman: No, he hasn't sung for Bose: The Forgotten Hero. He is singing for an animation film by Shekhar but that's work in progress right now. He is slowly getting musical. He started himself, played some stuff and I recorded it and happened to use it. It's just a very small portion of a song. Rajeev Masand: You daughters have sung for Mangal Pandey. A R Rahman: Yes they have. Rajeev Masand: What's it like working with your kids? A R Rahman: We take our kids for granted. They have to be programmed, told what to do, what not to do. I work with computers a lot and when they work with me, I see the whole evolution of the kids - how they were before and how they are now. It's really fantastic to see them so groomed. I was jus thinking abt this... why Rahmanji being compared with other Music Directors ? Answer came into my mind was. Rahmanji shouldn't be compared with other Music Directors.. He is not a competitor He is a Goal for other music directors He keeps setting goals for them to achieve .. once they reach his position he again sets a goal... Which they start working again... The last goal set was OSCAR Once some one achieve or comes near to Oscar his position again Goes up something more may be 3 oscars at a time But he does't stick to that postion he keeps improvising his position year by year .. month by month day by day .. like his tunes. Chord, I don’t think my post was in response to what you think “is a lack of blind devotion” or rather appreciation for other composers. I’d like to think that I am also a fan of good music and not blindly devoted Rahman’s only. I’ve said it to friends before and in this forum too– I look forward to seeing SEL win at the awards someday. I look forward to seeing Amit Trivedi win someday and yes even Pritam (if he can stay away from other people’s property in the relevant soundtrack) and I’ll be happy for them too. Rahman makes his first foray into composing music for an American comedy feature film with Universal Pictures’ forthcoming romantic comedy, Couples Retreat. The soundtrack will be released via Relativity Media digitally on October 6, 2009, and in all retail outlets nationwide on October 13, 2009. For Couples Retreat, A.R. Rahman has conjured up the sounds of a tropical island oasis fusing the laid-back rhythms of island music along with his gift for creating golden melodies. The opportunity to work on Couples Retreat was a welcome challenge for Rahman who created a score that complements the film’s light-hearted tone with just a hint of his signature Indian sound. Couples retreat is indeed a treat :-) . Im listening in loop. The album music is very visual and i tend to picturise the music with what we've seen in videos online. And im getting to the conclusion about the pic where rahman is with the great vangelis. I think they met to share their musical creation knowledge when doing score for a film. I guess our boss wanted to get hints on what the hollywood audience wants to hear and this gives him a distance ahead to come out with a good hollywood soundtrack. Rahman adds to the Indianized touch by adding the Hindi word ‘Sajna Sajna Re…’ The English lyrics are mesmerizingly touching and perhaps, the western people wouldn’t have listened to such an appealing melody. KURU KURU… Vocal: A.R. Rahman Fine! After uttering ‘Ellam Pugazhum Iraivan Oruvanukke’ – it’s one more turn to express his gratitude for his TAMIL. The song starts off with slow-rhythms of 6/8 March on soft-guitars later with slow-stringed running notes. The Tamil lyrics tuned in complete Hollywood style happen to be the best flavors. Totting up to the best panoramas is the unique-patterned rhythm on scissors. Sound engineering has been marvelously performed… Doubtlessly, KURU KURU is the best pick of soundtrack. LUAU by John O’Brien Making it blissfully done over the sound supervising, John O’Brien scores on his show with country music with 12-string acoustic guitars. The running beats on Congo-drums make an impressive sound. SALVADORE The song sounds much similar to Tamil song ‘Jumbhalaka’ that has the prelude starting off with Arabic intonation. The song has guitars and beats played on similar touch. As well, it has similarities with Rahman’s previous score for ‘Mein Alabeli’ in ‘Zubeida’. INTERVENTION The maestro roars again! Of course, put your best verdicts for the brilliant orchestration of symphony based track. Rahman’s vocalism on higher pitch emblazons it stunningly. If our guesses are right, the track should precisely be inserted somewhere during emotional sequences. The Waterfall Sounds to be a romantic track with guitars and slow-stringed instruments on show with dominance of flute in initial parts…. JASON AND CYNTHIA – PIANO THEME The track doesn’t differ from the previous version in any vistas. Rahman trenchantly brings the mix of various soft instruments of piano, guitar and violin. The slow stringed chords do accompany right throughout the song. ANIMAL SPIRITS The musical track of ‘Couples Retreat’ winds-up with ‘Animal Spirits’ that has astoundingly marvelous score. It’s a track brimmed with full of high-spirited delight. So are the beats and instruments with perfect blend. I even tweeted the Vince Vaughn fanclub asking if they know its him who sang...and they said could be and directed me to Farshad's blog to read more...LOL.
