DOING CHENNAI PROUD: Tanvi Shah (extreme right) with big names from the
music world (from left) Ralph Peer II, Donovan and Del Bryant, BMI CEO, at
the awards function

Awards seem to be the flavour of the season for the “Slumdog Millionaire”
team. Recently, Chennai girl Tanvi Shah, who crooned her way to fame, was
invited to receive the BMI London Award for 'Jai Ho'. The genre-defying
singer, who is currently hopping between studios and shows, takes a break to
speak to MetroPlus. Excerpts:
*WHY BMI IS SPECIAL* The Broadcast Music Inc Award means a lot to me. 'Jai
Ho' has won the maximum number of awards this year and I guess, it has been
performed the most number of times.
*LONDON RECEPTION* It was an awesome experience to be there at the famous
Dorchester Hotel. I found the proceedings really different because they have
to follow a particular sequence. After the media interactions came the
funniest part, when I had to stand alone and face the camera. There were
hundreds of cameramen saying, 'Look at me, look at me' or 'Tanvi one more,
side profile' But I felt really proud when they played 'Jai Ho' as I walked
up to the stage to collect the award. The audience sang aloud and they were
from all over the world. It's true. Music brings us together, regardless of
barriers.
*POST SLUMDOG* Life's not been the same. I feel I'm living a completely new
life. I've been travelling miles and more miles and living out of suitcases.
Sometimes, it's like a fairytale. I feel blessed. There's a good amount of
work pouring in. I wish I had a magic wand or a fairy godmother who could
add a few more hours to my day! And it's just not my singing career that's
picked up; my interior and jewellery designing work has progressed as well.
*PRESSURE POINT* With rising expectations, come a lot of challenges. It
makes every day meaningful and I'm enjoying every minute! The bar has been
raised. But I don't worry. I rehearse well and keep trying to do my best.
Then, I simply leave it to the Almighty. A. R. Rahman and Augustine Paul
have encouraged me to do better every time. Particularly with voice
modulation.
*FUTURE PROJECTS* I'm not in a hurry to sign on the dotted line. You'll know
when something concrete happens. But locally, there's a lot of work,
including songs for Yuvan Shankar Raja.
*PUBLIC ATTENTION* Oh, my God! It makes me feel jittery. I feel I'm better
off behind the scenes. It makes me smile when people in different countries
come up and ask for an autograph or to take a picture with me. And I think,
'Tanvi is that you signing autographs?' I just like to take each day as it
comes - being happy and keeping life simple.

[arr] Two great things in Hyd concert..

2009-10-26 Thread wiredbeats .

Hyd concert had two amazing things to remember.
1. The continuum portion of Rehna Tu was hummed in tune by Rahman. He just
hummed the entire tune..wow. I was wondering how on earth is he going to do
that portion. Will he use the instrument, or will he supplement with a flute.
He ended up humming it. 2. Sadhna Sargam sang the entire Telugu track of
alaipayuthey without a single error and without referring to any piece of
paper.I mean for a non telugu, this is great stuff.
anymore the attendees can recall?

[arr] Kisna theme as concert starter, how will it be.Heres my take..

2009-10-26 Thread wiredbeats .

Rahmaniacs,
As always : Original is king.

Just as some of us are getting over with the hangover of the live concert, i
have a piece of imagination for your review
Kisna theme live in concert. ...
Well actually not. But for those who have been to Rahman concerts or watched
them atleast, you would notice that he has started his shows by either
Rangeela’s – Spirit of Rangeela or Jaage Hai. The Hyderabad show began with a
mix of Mangal Pandey’s background score and then he appeared on stage with Jage
Hai from GURU ost. All of them superb as beginning tracks.
I just stretched my imagination and well..imagined how it would sound if he
starts with theme music of the movie Kisna, i mean this melody is just amazing
and probably makes a good candidate for a beginning the show.
This theme is mellow and has rhythmic interaction of piano and flute. I added
the octane to it and gave it a “show starter” feel all with the crowd cheers
and reverbs. Its damn cool and you should check it out. Some minor errors to
the beat timing is intentional to give it a reverb , sort of a live concert
feel,with that slight delay/lag.
I hope you like it! Sounds cool in good systems and bad on laptop speakers.. :)

2009-10-26 Thread Vishal
Watch the video SP Balasubrahmanyam talking about his relations with Rahman and
his journey from a jingle-singer to a double Oscar winner
He says how he hasn't changed and remained grounded!!
SPB said ARR had given his first performance where he was the chief guest and
the second solo performance was during SPB's birthday
He also says how ARR's father Shekhar worked hard as an arranger with the music
directors in Malayalam and he says it is with his father's
help, SPB got a break in the industry!
He also said that when he congratulated Rahman when he got Roja
Rahman had said that he'll not be able to
survive the competetion and will disappear within 5 years, but everything he's
done is history since then!
Finaly, he sings a song from Roja in Telugu with Suneetha (who kills the

Continumm portion was always hummed by ARRji in all Jai Ho Concerts (I am not
sure abt Chennai Concert but he did it in Calicut, Pune and now in Hyd)

Another small observation when Blaaze started off Humma Humma the actual song
started with the piano guitar rather than any lyric (the first portion of the
song) and then ARRji sang the later part and that was just amazing

[arr] I want my children to write their own destiny - ARR

2009-10-26 Thread Sreekrishnan R
For the first time ever, AR Rahman opens up about his children and
thanks his mother and wife for the role they've played in shaping his
remarkable life.

http://www.dnaindia.com/entertainment/report_i-want-my-children-to-write-their-own-destiny-rahman_1303400

Mumbai: With the success came the spotlight and though India's top
music composer AR Rahman says winning international acclaim with two
Oscars and a Golden Globe has added pressure to be more media savvy, he
prefers to let his work do the talking.
Rahman revealed that it is
his conscious decision to remain out of the media glare as he doesn't
want his children -- Khadijah, Rahima and Aameen -- to feel like
they're living in a glass bowl.

I want to give my children a
normal childhood. I want them to grow up without any pressure of how
well they should perform because their dad is so-and-so. I want them to
write their own destiny. All this media attention is because of the
work that I'm thankfully getting and doing, but I'm consciously trying
to keep it all away from my personal life, said Rahman in an exclusive
interview to DNA.

I don't want to expose my personal space to
the camera just because people want to know more about it. They can
know me for my work -- that's my identity. My children can get their
own spotlight once they write their own destiny with their own hands.
They don't need to share mine. They are young and should focus on
becoming what they want to. I don't want to distract them.

The Mozart of Madras also shared his feelings about his reclusive wife
Saira Banu, who was last seen when he took her with him to Los Angeles
for the Oscars. She is a pillar of strength for me. She doesn't want
to share my limelight and is content raising our children and looking
after the family. My work has increased over the years and I thank her
for being there to look after my mother, my children and me. Without
her, I wouldn't have been able to involve myself so single-mindedly in
my profession. I was at peace as I knew she was handling everything
with ease, he says.

It is a known fact that Rahman is a
dedicated son to his mother Kareema and the soft-spoken musician says
he's beholden for the spiritual strength she has imbibed in him.My
mother is the spiritual head of our family. She is the guiding light
for all of us and the energy behind our family's growth. She raised me
with great patience and hardship. I wouldn't be me without my mother.
Whatever attributes I have in me -- and the world has seen it -- is
because she has blessed me with them, he says.

The Chiggy Wiggy composer whose act with Kylie Minogue has gone on to
become a rage says Indians winning awards overseas has made the West
look towards our country as a storehouse of talent -- and many more
such collaborations are waiting to happen. It is a time of great
synergy between the West and the East. We have to show them how
brilliant India is by sticking to our roots. It won't surprise me if
India takes center-stage in Hollywood in the years to come, signs off
Rahman.

Good narration
nice to know that your dream had come true.. :)

 17TH October 2009……
Diwali – the Hindu Festival of Light……
 My Birthday too…….

 NETHERLANDS

My `big dream of the decade' came true…in a most unexpected way.

It was around 4.30 p.m. and I was chatting online with my sister, telling
her how depressed I was because I was going to miss another chance to see my
`Hero' – A R Rahman – who would be attending an award ceremony 350km away in
 neighbouring Belgium.

While we were chatting, the doorbell rang, making me jump, so I logged off
and went to see who was at the door – it was my good friend, Dinesh.

Opening the door, he gave me a big hug and greeted me with happy birthday
and may all your dreams come true! I thanked him but told him that I only
had one dream and no way was that going to come true! Dinesh asked me what I
 was talking about.

My Guruji is attending an award ceremony in Belgium, I replied. Dinesh
was a little upset and said, He is not only your Guruji but mine too! I
apologised to Dinesh and told him that all the tickets for the ceremony had
been sold the previous week – I have known that since two days before. I
didn't have a car – or a driving license, for that matter – and if I went by
train, I would not be able to get back home as the ceremony didn't finish
until 11.00 p.m. What's more, I did not know anyone in Belgium, so had no
 local support.

Sorry, my `Rahmaniacs', I didn't tell you what the ceremony was about. It
was the `World Soundtrack Academy Awards' and was being held in the city of
 Gent.

OK, back to how I could make my big dream come true.
Dinesh suggested that we call the place where the ceremony was being held
and ask again about tickets. OK, I said, I'll do it and dialled the
 Awards office number.
How may I help you? the receptionist asked.
I told her that I was calling from the Netherlands and asked if there were
any tickets available for that evening's awards programme. I didn't need to
tell Dinesh that the receptionist's reply had been, I am sorry to say that
all the tickets have been sold – it was obvious from the way I looked at
 him.

I did not hang-up however but told the receptionist, Look, I am A R
 Rahman's craziest fan – I don't care if I don't get to talk with him – just
to see him would be enough. At what time will the guests be at the entrance?
Is it possible just to stand there to get a look at him? Please help me
madam! My home is 350 km away from Gent and it will take me almost 3 hours
by car to get there. Dinesh could hear all this as I had switched my `phone
 to `speaker-phone'.

After a while, the receptionist said, Look, I know how much you guys love
A R Rahman… let me talk to my colleague. - my face got brighter – The show
 is going to start around
8.00p.m. but the doors will be open between 6.00p.m. and 7.45p.m. and
that's when all the VIP's will arrive; then there's a break at 9.00p.m….oh,
 just a minute she said.

After a short time, she came back on the line and told us, you guys might
just be lucky…you might get two tickets after the break but I can't promise
anything because it depends on whether people stay for the second part of
the ceremony. That last sentence left our hearts racing and I could hardly
form my words to thank her. She laughed and hung up.

Now, the next problem was the car! Dinesh had a license but did not have
his own motor. I'm going to `phone a car rental company, he said, and by
the time I was going to remind him that today was a Saturday, he was already
being told, Yep, we have a car available and Dinesh told him that he would
collect it in 5 minutes. I couldn't believe our luck.

I looked at the clock and saw that it was 5 minutes past 5.00p.m and my
mind could think of nothing except getting the car and driving straight to
Gent. Dinesh told me he would collect the car and be back to pick me up in
10 minutes and that I should be ready and waiting on the street!

Although my stomach was churning and my nerves were on a knife-edge, the
thought of the ceremony in Gent helped reduce the tension. I just wanted to
see my hero's humble face and tell him, Guruji, I love you, jai ho! even
if it was some distance away from him. That's all I was thinking.

Out on the street, I saw a new Nissan approaching, with Dinesh at the
wheel. I was jumping up and down as though I had taken the winning catch in
the last cricket match of the season! Dinesh knew that I was not feeling
well so suggested I got in the back seat and try to sleep.

To get there at the time the receptionist had advised us, Dinesh had to
`put his foot down' and at times, I saw we were doing 170 kph! After 20
minutes driving, we hit a traffic jam and my nerves started to get to me
again. Don't worry, Dinesh said, we'll soon get through this…and so we
did and were once again cruising at 170 kph while most of the other vehicles
 on the road were

[arr] It's difficult to write lyrics for Rahman's Tunes - Vairamuthu

2009-10-26 Thread Aravind AM
Hi,

In the latest issue Kumudam, there was a question about Rahman and Illayaraja,
in Vairamuthu's interview...  here's the scan:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n260/aravind_am/Vairamuthu_on_ARR.jpg

I'm translating it for u all :)

Question: Do you find a difference in your writing, while working with
different composers? Do words come out from your pen, based on whether the tune
is IR's or ARR's?

VM: Illayaraja's tunes have the tamil touch to them. AR Rahman's tunes have
the whole world's touch. Illayaraja is a man from the villages. He infused folk
music which he grew up with, and various rural music forms into his fulm music.
Though he blended it with Western music, basically he is a village man, and he
ruled folk music. This tamil touch in his music was easy for me, because, I'm
a village man too. I too grew up with the village music.

But, when writing for AR Rahman, I needed to fly to different countries in the
west, and make myself aware of different music forms which were new to me. It's
a bit difficult to write lyrics for AR Rahman's tunes. He doesn't make
ordinary, usual tunes. He makes fresh new tunes for which it is almost
impossible to filt lyrics!

I once asked Rahman, Why do you torture me like this, by breaking the phrases
in your tunes like this?
Rahman replied with a smile Anyone who knows Tamil can write lyrics for an
ordinary, normal tune. Writing for such challenging tunes will make you
special, and give you that pride of a true 'poet'

For a question which I asked with some pain, he replied with a smile!

[arr] Interesting info about the music of Couple's Retreat from John O'Brien

2009-10-26 Thread satish_srini
John O'Brien made a comment on Suresh's blog-review of Couples Retreat. There
was some interesting info about the music :

Hi Guys, John O'Brien here. A nice rounded conversation about the score. AR
was left to his own creativity on this film. There were a few spotting sessions
with myself, the director Peter Billingsley, the editor Dan Lebenthal and the
Music Editor Jim Weidman. I would say the most input came from Jim Weidman and
Peter Billingsley. We scored in Los Angeles at the Sony soundstage. AR did most
of the composing in Mumbai and a little in Hollywood. AR was a dream to work
with and yes his Shark cue was very inventive, knowing he could have gone a
safe route. My main job description as music supervisor is to find needle
drops' or original songs to place into the film at key scenes such as the Eden
East nightclub. I have scored and done music supervision on other films. I
composed six original cues for this film. Peter asked me to do the Lua cue and
it was very generous of AR to have it included on the soundtrack. Keep up the
conversation, I'm enjoying it very much.
