Hey Friends,

What an incredible concert! I hope everyone enjoyed it. For those
who couldn't catch it, i have recorded the entire concert and will
try to post in online. Any recommendation on where videos can be
uploaded other than Youtube? The concert is more than 2 hours and
youtube only lets you load 10 minute videos.

AR sang a lot of songs.. strangely, he didnt remember the lyrics for
almost all the tamil songs he sang :( The overall presentation of
the concert was great! I wish i had been there. Glad atleast i could
watch it online.

My opinion is It still sounds good.
But I feel the use of 'telephonized' voice - like the Kalyani Menon part in
Omana Pennae , can be reduced..
I think ARR started this first with 'Jill allava' in 'En Swasa Katre'.

IMO Lagaan,  WOHE and CR  also have the same high sound clarity and quality.

I'm sure if ARR decides to re-master DilSe and Thiruda Thiruda - it'll sound
even better.

Wow...not only is the music of VTV grand, but the sound quality/production/
mixing/mastering in this album is just out of this world. When I listen to some
songs of his recent albums and include songs of VTV in the mix, there is a
definite difference in terms of higher clarity and crispness in VTVto me,
one of ARR's best sonic reproductions in a long, long time. Even within the
more musically dense areas of the album, like the ending of Hosana, there is a
distinct clarity and sound precision with each layer, each track being audible
using good volume proportion. Hats off to the team!

I admit, when Blue came out, I was biased, and that bias clouded my judgment of
the sound quality issues, which are real issues. But, even now, I still enjoy
Blue a lot, despite knowing the sound issues. This time with VTV, I tried to
remain objective, but still think that my praise this time is not from a
bias...it's really true. I think with VTV, AR may have received some feedback
around the issues with Blue, and really tried hard to get it perfect this
time...and hopefully from now on with each album (I briefly alluded to this in
my VTV review).

On a separate but related topic, check out the range of actual sounds and
instruments on this album.so colorful and beautiful, as my friend put it,
like a mosaic.. in all its beauty.

It's a beautiful, beautiful piece of artwork that deserves respect, which is
why we should be buying the CD...the whole package, and pay our respects to the
ARR lead team behind this career high masterpiece. How privileged we are!!!

[arr] One aspect I personally can't connect, in recent times, with in ARR's music is...

2010-01-16 Thread Gopal Anandan
...synthesized vocals and the over use of this in many songs!

E.g. the chorus in Omanna Penne, or Anbil Avan. I think use of technology (as
against natural vocals) to build the harmony is not working out the way it
should. Technology driven musical instrument sounds are fine but vocals? nope -
not working out for me.

IMO - no technology can either emulate or beat the purity in vocals

Just think about it, aren't we asking too much?

1. Original Soundtrack
2. Soundtrack re-release with missing / unreleased songs, instrumentals,
unplugged versions etc..
3. Background Score

basically 3 CDs for each project that Rahman does... whereas distributors /
music companies cant handle 1 regular CD release in professional way.

@your other mail directed to me - no worries mate! it is all fine :)

[arr] was Rahman playing with free rhytm in VTV... Pls clear my doubt

2010-01-16 Thread Arijit Debnath
Hello,
I was just surprised after lots of hearing of the title track of VTV sung by
Karthik…. The vocal part’s beat and guitar/instrument part’s beats are
completely different…
I believe the vocal part by Karthik is in 6 beats…. And the guitar part from
beginning to 1:58Min min is in 16 beats

>From 1:58 the song’s rhythm pattern is changing and the guitar from 1:54 to
2:11 is like freestyle (or I didn’t understand the beats of the
guitar there)

Again from 2:11 to 2:32 the guitar and vocal both are going in 6 beats and a
perfect match…

At 2:34 again the guitar going back to 16 beats and vocal same as 6 beats…
and song ends in such way…

Can someone knowledgeable person in Taal/beats clear the doubt or if you
also find the same like me?

However in Rabindra Sangeet (Tagore Songs) there are lots of songs having
such contrast between vocal/instrumental arrangement which are deliberately
created and called as ‘Poetic rhythm’ /’free-rhythm’ (Mukto-chondo in
Bengali Rabindra Sangeet).
In that case was Rahman playing with free rhythm in this song? That would
be a new start in contemporary music……

[arr] Endhiran in Stanwinston studios!!!

2010-01-16 Thread Thulasi Ram
*THIS IS HUGE!!!*

http://www.directorshankaronline.com/2010/01/happy-pongal/

Happy Pongal

Hi Everyone…

Ubhayakusalobhari!!! (UBKS)
(Its a Sanskrit word used by Ambi in ANNIYAN. Meaning: – I am fine…
Everything ok here… Hope you and your family doing well… etc… etc…)

Most of you have asked about Stanwinston Studios role in Endhiran.

Yes. Endhiran is the first Indian movie to use Stanwinston Studio’s
Animatronics technology. We all are proud and happy to be associated with
No.1 Hollywood studio who did a great job in movies like Jurassic Park,
Predator, Terminator, Ironman and the recent Avatar.

Myself, Rajini sir and our Technical crew have been at Los Angeles for
couple of weeks at Stanwinston Studios for scanning, make-up test and
preproduction works in July 2008. We all are excited that we are working at
the place where Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger
have worked.

After 1½ half years of preparatory work a group of top technicians came to
Sun Studio’s Chennai sets and worked around for 4 months. 22 scenes of
Endhiran Movie have been shot using Animatronics and Special Make-ups. Most
of Important scenes was shot lively with Rajini sir using Animatronics
without CGI.

At the end of the day Stanwinston people told that they are very happy that
Endhiran movie utilized maximum animatronics techniques in so many scenes in
all possible ways, which is very rare in Hollywood too… Cool….

Wish you all a very very Happy Pongal…!!!

And my pongal is on the sets with Rajini Sir, Ash and Endhiran crew.
Today we are having shooting.

C U again ASAP.

I've given up trying to decipher ARR's beats these days. Its too
complicated. . even more than some of the 'commercial' loops he seemed to used
in the mid 90's.

  exactly!! crazy's the word!! :D

I was so damn confused the first few times I heard it, not understanding the
beat in the first few seconds! Figured it out after a couple of listens!

The song starts this way:
bep-beep- beep-beep. ... bep-beep- beep-beep. ..
but you can follow the beat when u start counting from end of this above said
phrase, where the synth loop starts... (at 0:04)!!

Amazing stuff!

RAIN did not spoil the musical parade of Indian superstar A.R. Rahman as he
thrilled tens of thousands of people in his concert extravaganza at a packed
Parramatta Park.

Part of the Sydney Festival, the free concert had everything from Bollywood
jive, hip hop-influenced grooves and traditional Indian sounds as (see
photos here) Rahman and his entourage of colourful dancers captivated the
crowd from start to
finish
on
Saturday night.

That finish to the two and a half hour production came in the form of crowd
favourite `Jai ho’, which saw fireworks light the sky while concert-goers
danced and chanted the chorus.

The Slumdog Millionaire
composer
addressed
the crowd before the finale on what he had earlier in the night called ``one
of the most historic concerts of my life’’.

``Thank you for being part of change,’’ he said, a reference to his wish to
end the attacks against Indian students in Victoria.

``I want all of you guys staying here to bless the children of India with
love.’’

Rahman also asked the crowd to spare a thought for the victims of the Haiti
earthquake.

``Life is just like that. Anything can happen,’’ he said.

``So Jai ho, God bless you all.’’

They were words of wisdom to his adoring crowd, (see photos here) mostly
expats from the subcontinent who came from across Sydney and
interstate
.

The crowd stretched over 500 metres through a tree-lined corridor in the
park, many families seated on picnic rugs.

Most people stayed to the end of the concert, albeit some with umbrellas.
Black clouds loomed overhead and light rain fell a couple of times but few
revellers left early.

Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh commented on the mammoth crowd
in his welcome speech before the concert.

``I’ve never seen so many Indian people here, it reminds me when I was in
Calcutta,’’ he told concert-goers.

He asked Australians to embrace all people who come to their country, and
called Rahman ``the Sachin Tendulkar of music’’.

A spokesperson for NSW Police said there had been no reports of major
incidents on the night.

[arr] Winners: Bollywood Hungama Surfers Choice Music Awards 2009

2010-01-16 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
It's done! Votes have been counted and the results that you were waiting for
are here!

Bollywood Hungama is proud to present the winners of the 'Bollywood Hungama
Surfers Choice Music Awards 2009'. The USP of these awards is that there are no
judges and panelists. It's YOU guys who have chosen the deserving winner.

(In order to ensure zero spamming and nullify multiple votes, we made the
voting system go through a fool-proof 3-step process of Email Validation,
Cookie Check and IP check)

We will begin with the biggest of them all…

Best Soundtrack Of 2009

This one has been bagged by none other than Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani with a
huge margin. Mr.Kumar Taurani (MD-Tips) was delighted to know this and added on
a light note that he had specifically told Pritam he wants the biggest album of
the year or the consequences will not be good! Well, Pritam did end up creating
the best album of the year after 6 months of hard-work.

Does it come as a surprise then that the first runner up this year is also an
album by Pritam? It's the lovable Love Aaj Kal.

Pritam said, "I am overwhelmed with the kind of audience appreciation that has
come my way for Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. I was expecting this album to work
well with the audience but the way it has reached the top has been quite an
exhilarating journey. 2009 has been particularly good with Billu followed by
Love Aaj Kal, New York and Tum Mile. I look forward to many more happy music
outings in 2010 as well."

The second runner up this year is the album with a heart, Delhi 6. A.R.Rahman's
music and Prasoon Joshi's lyrics had to get the album in the Top 3 this year.

Based on the votes provided by our surfers and the validation done by us, the
Award for the 'Music Company of the Year' goes toT-Series. While the Award for
the 'Music Director of the Year' goes to Pritam.

I have to say this song is like one of those slow poisons of Rahman. To be
honest, very first day I listened to the soundtrack - I listened to only first
6 songs and this one didnt appeal for some reason. Now I just cant stop
listening to it!!
Though I got lyrics & translation of the songs.. can someone please tell what
language are they in? Is it complete Malyalam or some Tamil as well? what about
chorus part - is that Sanskrit or that is Malyalam too

[arr] Jai Ho show

2010-01-16 Thread Umie
Dear Rahmaniacs,
As Sydney was setting for a spectacular Bollywood treat “JAI HO”, A rare live
performance by my Guru Ji Rahman, I was searching in the internet to find a
live broadcasting link to watch our Guru Ji's. I could not find one and slept
with the heavy heart. This morning I continued my effort and finally I got the
AUDIO link. I shared the link with my sister and other Rahmaniacs.

Although I missed the 1.45 hours of the show, I could listen to the last
session of the show, which made Goosebumps and tears roll out of joy.

Thiruda Thiruda - Koncham Nilavu, OMG!!!, I have never heard that song in any
of the live concerts, with so much style and rap. I think, the song was not
sung by Anupama. I didn't know who did that rap but was superb.

Dil Se Re, when he sang that word I could hear the cheer from the entire crowd,
exhilarating feeling.

Mustafa Mustafa, was startling too, with so much lead guitar improvisation…
wow...

Then, I heard Guru Ji's voice ...no words to tell but ecstatic,….. Goosebumps
and tears, I mean it. Guru Ji was really in great sprits.

Antha Arabic Kadaloram, wow!!! started with Blazze's rap "Humma Humma"

"Vande maadaram" followed Humma Humma...Then Guru Ji said: We are coming to end
of this show...Thank you for coming, God Bless you, “Jai Ho”. Then the show
finished up with incredible song "Jai Ho"...

I am sure, Sydney audiences had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see my
Guru Ji in the beautiful parkland of Parramatta Park.

I want to hear more about the experience from the luckiest ones, who were able
to participate in this show.

The sound system was in very good quality. I think this is one of ARR”s show
which had with the best sound Quality.

"I want to have a great concert for people to enjoy, and also to spread the
message of togetherness and peace; build a bridge for people who are trying to
break it." – AR Rahman message in a new conference before the concert. God
bless Guru Ji with audience

Thank you

Music is my 2nd mom
Luv u ARR

Kamini Mathai reads A R Rahaman: The Musical Storm in Bangalore

BANGALORE: Author of ‘A R Rahman: The Musical Storm’, Kamimin Mathai read
sections from the chapter titled ‘Dileep’ and recounted her experiences with
the composer and the people around him during the writing of the book. The
book reading was held at the Reliance Timeout outlet in Bangalore on Friday
evening.

“Penguin had asked me to write this book six years ago. Every meeting with
Rahman took long to organise, sometimes after eight or nine months of SMSes,
I would get a phone call from him saying that we’d meet the next day!”
revealed Mathai. “I didn’t know how to end the book, until Rahman won the
Oscar and I knew that’s it!,” said Mathai.

“The book has been written with Rahman’s knowledge and consent, I’ve had
sittings with him and the people around him, but it is not his official
biography. That is to come later from his side,” informed Mathai.

Mathai also spoke about the pain the composer underwent during his father’s
illness and death and his subsequent conversion to Islam.

Alphons Joseph is on a high. The affable music director and composer has
just sung a rocking number for his idol A.R. Rahman and his infectious
excitement is evident as he talks about it. “It's his first project after
the Oscars. It was a pleasant surprise when playback singer Srinivas gave me
a ring and told me that Rahman Sir wanted me to sing the song ‘Aaaromale' in
Goutham Menon's latest film Vinaiithandi Varuvaya,” says Alphons.

It is a major breakthrough for the singer-composer who took a long winding
route to find his destination in music. “Although my father, Joseph, a
trained Carnatic singer, initiated me into music, he was not keen on my
becoming a musician as his younger brother, K.K. Paul, had a tough time,”
recalls Alphons. So after learning Carnatic music from Mangad Nateshan for
many years and winning prizes in light music and guitar in the Calicut
University youth festival, the Maths graduate turned to computers to make a
career in IT.

“We are seven siblings and though our family is very musical, my father felt
music alone would not be able to sustain us. In the meantime, I was part of
a gospel band called Rex and so my musical abilities saw me win a lot of
assignments. That was how got my first film Vellithira,” recounts Alphons.

*Hit song*

The ‘Pacha manga…' number climbed the charts and helped Alphons reap the
fruits of his hard work. Other films followed and the genial, soft-spoken
singer became a familiar face when he appeared as the jury and trainer on
the music talent hunt show on Amrita TV. Unlike the tough judges who
specialise in making participants squirm with their sarcasm and scorn,
Alphons believes in motivating aspiring singers with his advise and rarely
but firmly expressed criticism.

But the veteran guitarist and singer admits that even he was nervous when he
was singing for Rahman during the midnight recording session in Chennai. “I
just could not get it right initially. But Rahman put me at ease and then
the recording when ahead smoothly,” recalls Alphons. He adds that it was
during the audio release of Vellithira that he met Rahman and gave him a CD
of the songs sung by him. “I remember Rahman asking me why I had decided to
become a music director and not a singer… Little did I imagine he would give
me a break like this….”

The audio preview of film Vinaiithandi Varuvaya was at the British Academy
of Film and Television Arts where the seven other singers (including Blazee,
Shreya Goshal, Naresh Iyer) in the film were also present. “It was a
memorable experience. Another lesson it underscored was how universal is
music. Although many in the audience may not have understood the language,
they were moved by the scores,” says Alphons. In fact, Alphons plans to do
his research on the vocal techniques in Indian music and then train students
by fusing the best of vocal techniques from the Indian and Western schools
of music.

“That is why I am doing my post-graduation in music at the National School
of Drama. Initially, I had doubts if I could cope with the syllabus as my
classmates were all music graduates. The faculty at the music department
asked me to sing and when they heard me they were convinced that I could do
the course,” says Alphons.

*Fusion music*

It was his work as a music composer and singer that made him aware of the
depth and richness of Carnatic music. “I use a lot of fusion that blends
Indian ragas with Western notes. That is when I understood how much more
there is to Indian music than what is usually dished out,” says Alphons.

Admitting it is difficult to juggle work, studies and home, the father of
two says that he is determined to complete the course and then do further
studies in music.

His ambition? “I go where God takes me… never planned anything.”

‘Aaaromale' has been composed by lyricist Kaithapram. The song in Malayalam
narrates the angst, frustration and soul-searching of the protagonist, a
Malayali. “It is a first for Malayalam as the song has several shades of the
blues,” says Alphons.

I have always been a Chinmayee fan, esp. since she sang the title of song of

But, what totally blew me away just today was hearing her sing at the unplugged
VTV launchsinging Shreya's part in Mannipaya and Kalyani's part in Omanna
Penne so effortlessly and beautifully...at times sounding even better than the
original artists!!! What a beautiful tonal quality she has in her voice and her
emotional expressions are so delicate and softshe moulds her voice so well
and truly demonstrates an incredible versatility.

I feel that she is an overall underrated singer and needs more recognition,
esp. up North. She really has a great career in front of her and hope that AR
uses her more often, both North and South, and that other MDs both North and
South use her more frequently.

I am a Chinmayee fan for life!!!

[arr] R&M reviews VTV music - 3.5/5

2010-01-16 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
http://www.radioandmusic.com/content/reviews/film-music-reviews/vinnaithandi-varuvaya

Music: A R Rahman
Lyrics: Thamarai
Label: Sony Music
Rating: 3.5/5
Anticipations have been high for A R Rahman’s music in Gautham Menon’s
Vinnaithandi Varuvaya as this is the first Tamil album composed by the maestro
after he bagged the Academy awards, Bafta and Golden Globe honours last year.
Expectations increase all the more as Thamarai has penned the lyrics for the
album.
Vinnaithandi Varuvaya is packed with impressive tracks by the acclaimed
musician but is dominated by western influences, which might not go down too
well with the audiences. But the album is a sure treat for music lovers looking
for experimental music. Here’s a walk through the tracks in the album-
Mannipaya - Mannipaya is a melodious track with Shreya Ghoshal and Rahman on
the mike. Although you are hooked to flawless vocals of the singers, you can’t
miss the orchestration which stands out in the track. The perfect blend of
music arrangements with the keyboard, piano, flute, chorus and the vocalists
would definitely hook music lovers.
Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya - The album has a great title track Vinnaithaandi
Varuvaaya rendered by Karthik. The free flowing guitar in the background blends
naturally with the vocals - yet both seem to have their own character. The
music and vocals seem to be competing throughout the track, often outdoing each
other.
Hossana - This track is bound to have a mass appeal with its contemporary
arrangements and rap portions rendered by Blaaze. Vijay Prakash is at his best
and the track starts on a melodious note with Prakash, enters the rap- hip hop
mode with Blaaze and Prakash again brings back the melody bit. Suzzane
D’Mello’s humming in the background makes the song even more likable.
Kannukkul Kannai - The violin is a prominent instrument in this track dominated
by western music influences. Rahman displays his flair for western music with
this track sung brilliantly by Naresh Iyer. But it is a mediocre track and
nothing about it grips you even after repeated hearings. This is not the track
I would look forward to in the album.
Aaoromale - Passionate singing by Malayalam music director Alphonse Joseph and
amazing guitar play make the song grow on you after the first hearing itself. A
Malayalam track with a feel of country music, Aaromale is an experimental track
by Rahman. The song has a perfect fusion of western and Indian music with
violin interludes along with base instrument - guitar.
Alphonse has composed for Malayalam films including Pachamarathanalil,
Jalolsavam and is a regular band member of Rex Band, a prolific guitarist and a
carnatic classical vocalist. Anbil Avan - Sung by Devan Ekambaram and Chinmayi,
Anbil Avan is a peppy song with nothing exceptional. With some spellbound
tracks in the album, Anbil Avan falls much below the expectations.
Omana pene - Benny Dayal does what he is best at in this rhythmic song. Kalyani
Menon’s voice surprises as, just when you conclude that it is a male song,
Menon surfaces beautifully. Another surprise in the track is the traditional
nadaswaram towards the end which gives an altogether different essence to the
track.
Experimental in nature, the album Vinnaithandi Varuvaya exudes freshness. My
pick in the album includes Hossana which would go well with the audiences,
Alphonse Joseph owes Rahman for beautiful composition- Aaoromale and Mannipaya.

Chinmayee,

Watched the VTV audio launch and at times - i felt that the unplugged version
sounds as stunning as the album version itself.

i was trying to play both side by side to see how different they were. I think
unplugged version sounds more like "the mood" of the lyrics. The tune feels
pure there !

Do you think you can do an actual recording of the unplugged version and
release it. I'd for sure pay for it ! and i know millions of maniacs like me
would do the same.

Just the Piano, guitar and the vocals !

Praying for this to happen !

Chinmayi;s response !

"Sreekrishnan: True we had a great time putting it together. I am not sure if
that would release though I believe Rahman sir said something like that should
happen. But not sure if it would come to existence. "

If we here express interest, i am sure they can officially release !! Not a Bad
idea anyways !

Lets hope it happens !

[arr] Katrina in Rahman's music album

2010-01-16 Thread Vithur
 *Katrina in Rahman's music album*

For the first time, Katrina Kaif is all set to shed her hot glamorous image
for a sober role. Katrina will appear on the small screen in the image of a
charity worker for Oscar winner A.R. Rahman’s latest music album.

She will feature in three music videos with kids. According to the
source, Rahman’s composition is incorporated from famous nursery rhymes,
such as 'Jack and Jill' and 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star', to inspire/
educate kids. It will be a real rare treat to see Katrina Kaif on the small
screen.

As always, this experiment with nursery rhymes by the Mozart of Madras is
expected to come with fresh and original notes. This time, he is launching a
new vocalist too.

2010-01-16 Thread shaik kader

HI all,

Heard VTV..as usual the thrashing came from all corners telling that album
not upto mark and all sorts..guys when do u folks grow up..VTV really
rocks..it's a different genre album compared to the regular junk ones u
hear...

I really feel that Gautham made a wise decision moving away from Harris to
Rahman..he taken his musical instincts to another level..beyond what Harris
could deliver...

Let Gautham & ARR combo continue to deliver great hits...

ARR too made a good decision to join with Gautham to deliver such a unique
album in VTV..the sounds used are so refreshing...not like Gprrr
types...

As usual Rahman you rock

Me too. First time I heard it, I felt here's one song that I need to
give some time. But it just took me a couple more listening to get
hooked to the brilliance of this track. I think it's all Malayalam.

It takes a genius to blend two different genres so exquisitely!

Rivjot, I apologise for having to make you write what you called an unpleasent
e-mail and hence spoiling your mood. That was not my intention. I understand
that there are shortcomings in the way the current music industry functions and
we all know that it is a global problem. However, I think it's very easy to
point fingers.

I currently do not live in an area/county in which I have access to tamil
music, let alone Indian music. I have gone through what you have as well - the
painful wait and trust me, I know the feeling. You know what I do now? I get my
neice to buy me a CD when she gets her copy in India, and then she burns my CD
and e-mails the mp3s to me.  I am sure we all have some trustworthy
friends/family who have access to instant markets and this is just one option.
That way my thirst for wanting to listen  to the music within hours of its
release is taken care of and I get my copy of the CD by post in 5-10 days time.
I get the added satisfaction of not having fed the pirates- that feeling just
makes every soundtrack even more special for me.  That's the least I can do for
Rahman and the brilliant team behind his music. Where there's a will, there's a
way.

I strongly condemn piracy. It is stealing, although we don't like to admit to
it. And we are not only just stealing music but we are also stealing people's
livelihood. That's wrong. Just my two cents worth.

Another CD release with unplugged versions? Forget about it!! Dont even think
about it in your dreams because that simply is not going to happen.

There are some serious statements you made and I fall in the category of people
who (have to) download from net..

First of all its not pirated versions on amazon / iTunes, they are official
legal versions - whatever is on CD. I dont agree with your negative thoughts on
"Lets download because I am going to buy the CD anyways"

>From my point of view, it is alright to download and then buy the music (well
>thats what I do for Non-ARR albums as I cant just blindly buy every album that
>comes in the market, I buy non-ARR albums AFTER listening to them. concept is
>- buy the album if you like it). Now for ARR albums, as we are obsessed with
>his music, most of us cant just wait to listen to the songs.

You are lucky one who has Tamil video/audio stores at places near you, but that
isnt the situation in rest of the world. There is not even a single music
stores in my entire province / state where I can get Tamil CDs.

This time around for VTV, songs were available on iTunes (iPhone only) and I
was fortunate that I have iPhone. What about people who dont have iPhones? Do
you think someone would buy expensive phone like iPhone ($ 750) just to listen
to one album. Even if album was available for regular iTunes download, I can
totally understand that a person wouldnt want to spend double the cost of CD
for songs (buy mp3 songs then buy CD) unless he is a hardcore fan - thats why
they chose to download songs (even for free) and then buy CDs (because they
like the music, they want to support the artist).

.. and amazon, only people in UK can buy mp3s, why not people in other
countries? .. and what about people who dont even have credit cards (because
both iTunes & Amazon require visa / master card)?

Since Amazon is delivering CDs in Feb / March - do you really expect us to go
through the pain of not listening to songs till Feb / March?

In short, it is not us, it is distributors , music companies themselves who are
responsible for this ugly situation of piracy. If they distribute properly,
make CDs available at most places within same time, piracy can definitely be
minimized to some level.

arghhh what is wrong with me.. I am supposed to be enjoying VTV songs and I am
writing this non-pleasant statements. I guess I should watch these unplugged
version videos to change my mood =)

Hello Gayathri,

I was going thru your review which is impressive... however I saw the
following lines:

*7. Aaromale
When Rahman infused rap into folk numbers, everyone was left awed by the
final product. So how would you respond now that he blends rock with ethnic
music? You can't respond, of course. You're just left flabbergasted with the
sheer brilliance of ARR.*

Yes very true however I just remembered the Indian Ethnic music/lyrics
with hard rock in the end credit of "Mtrix Revolution" it's worth
listeneing I got very much surprised with the lyrics you may enjoy:

NEWS
16 JAN 10 @ 10:38PM BY STEVEN DEARE
A.R. Rahman sings during his free concert at Parramatta Park. PICTURE: MELVYN
KNIPE
RAIN did not spoil the musical parade of Indian superstar A.R. Rahman as he
thrilled tens of thousands of people in his concert extravaganza at a packed
Parramatta Park.
Part of the Sydney Festival, the free concert had everything from Bollywood
jive, hip hop-influenced grooves and traditional Indian sounds as Rahman and
his entourage of colourful dancers captivated the crowd from start to finish on
Saturday night.
That finish to the two and a half hour production came in the form of crowd
favourite `Jai ho’, which saw fireworks light the sky while concert-goers
danced and chanted the chorus.
The Slumdog Millionaire composer addressed the crowd before the finale on what
he had earlier in the night called ``one of the most historic concerts of my
life’’.
``Thank you for being part of change,’’ he said, a reference to his wish to end
the attacks against Indian students in Victoria..
``I want all of you guys staying here to bless the children of India with
love.’’
Rahman also asked the crowd to spare a thought for the victims of the Haiti
earthquake.
``Life is just like that. Anything can happen,’’ he said.
``So Jai ho, God bless you all..’’
They were words of wisdom to his adoring crowd, mostly expats from the
subcontinent who came from across Sydney and interstate for the free concert.
The crowd stretched over 500 metres through a tree-lined corridor in the park,
many families seated on picnic rugs.
Most people stayed to the end of the concert, albeit some with umbrellas. Black
clouds loomed overhead and light rain fell a couple of times but few revellers
left early.
Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh commented on the mammoth crowd in
his welcome speech before the concert.
``I’ve never seen so many Indian people here, it reminds me when I was in
Calcutta,’’ he told concert-goers.
He asked Australians to embrace all people who come to their country, and
called Rahman ``the Sachin Tendulkar of music’’.
A spokesperson for NSW Police said there had been no reports of major
incidents.

[arr] Experimental in nature, the album Vinnaithandi Varuvaya exudes freshnes......

2010-01-16 Thread uday kiran
Music: A R Rahman

Lyrics: Thamarai

Label: Sony Music

Rating: 3.5/5

Anticipations have been high for A R Rahman’s music in Gautham Menon’s
Vinnaithandi Varuvaya as this is the first Tamil album composed by the
maestro after he bagged the Academy awards, Bafta and Golden Globe honours
last year. Expectations increase all the more as Thamarai has penned the
lyrics for the album.

Vinnaithandi Varuvaya is packed with impressive tracks by the acclaimed
musician but is dominated by western influences, which might not go down too
well with the audiences. But the album is a sure treat for music lovers
looking for experimental music. Here’s a walk through the tracks in the
album-

*Mannipaya -* Mannipaya is a melodious track with Shreya Ghoshal and Rahman
on the mike. Although you are hooked to flawless vocals of the singers, you
can’t miss the orchestration which stands out in the track. The perfect
blend of music arrangements with the keyboard, piano, flute, chorus and the
vocalists would definitely hook music lovers.

*Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya -* The album has a great title track Vinnaithaandi
Varuvaaya rendered by Karthik. The free flowing guitar in the background
blends naturally with the vocals - yet both seem to have their own
character. The music and vocals seem to be competing throughout the track,
often outdoing each other.

*Hossana -* This track is bound to have a mass appeal with its contemporary
arrangements and rap portions rendered by Blaaze. Vijay Prakash is at his
best and the track starts on a melodious note with Prakash, enters the rap-
hip hop mode with Blaaze and Prakash again brings back the melody bit.
Suzzane D’Mello’s humming in the background makes the song even more
likable.

*Kannukkul Kannai -* The violin is a prominent instrument in this track
dominated by western music influences. Rahman displays his flair for western
music with this track sung brilliantly by Naresh Iyer. But it is a mediocre
track and nothing about it grips you even after repeated hearings. This is
not the track I would look forward to in the album.

*Aaoromale -* Passionate singing by Malayalam music director Alphonse Joseph
and amazing guitar play make the song grow on you after the first hearing
itself. A Malayalam track with a feel of country music, Aaromale is an
experimental track by Rahman. The song has a perfect fusion of western and
Indian music with violin interludes along with base instrument - guitar.

Alphonse has composed for Malayalam films including Pachamarathanalil,
Jalolsavam and is a regular band member of Rex Band, a prolific guitarist
and a carnatic classical vocalist. *Anbil Avan -* Sung by Devan Ekambaram
and Chinmayi, Anbil Avan is a peppy song with nothing exceptional. With some
spellbound tracks in the album, Anbil Avan falls much below the
expectations.

*Omana pene -* Benny Dayal does what he is best at in this rhythmic song.
Kalyani Menon’s voice surprises as, just when you conclude that it is a male
song, Menon surfaces beautifully. Another surprise in the track is the
traditional nadaswaram towards the end which gives an altogether different
essence to the track.

Experimental in nature, the album Vinnaithandi Varuvaya exudes freshness. My
pick in the album includes Hossana which would go well with the audiences,
Alphonse Joseph owes Rahman for beautiful composition- Aaoromale and
Mannipaya.

Other than that small lyrical mistake in her 'Omana Penne' performance, she
pronounces Malayalam really well. Thought, among the non-Malayalee female
singers, only Shreya (her recent Anuraaga Vilochananaayi by Vidyasagar is a
run-away hit in Kerala, FYI) could do justice to an entire Malayalam track. But
after listening to the launch function and that small bit, I really feel that
she can perform in Malayalam really well! Wishing for a hit for her as well in
Malayalam like Shreya got!

I have always been a Chinmayee fan, esp. since she sang the title of song of
KM, further enhanced by her performance in Tere Bina, Dil Gira Dafatan, to the
most recent VTV.

But, what totally blew me away just today was hearing her sing at the unplugged
VTV launchsinging Shreya's part in Mannipaya and Kalyani's part in Omanna
Penne so effortlessly and beautifully. ..at times sounding even better than the
original artists!!! What a beautiful tonal quality she has in her voice and
her emotional expressions are so delicate and softshe moulds her voice so
well and truly demonstrates an incredible versatility.

I feel that she is an overall underrated singer and needs more recognition,
esp. up North. She really has a great career in front of her and hope that AR
uses her more often, both North and South, and that other MDs both North and
South use her more frequently.

I am a Chinmayee fan for life!!!

2010-01-16 Thread ichord
Wow...not only is the music of VTV grand, but the sound
quality/production/mixing/mastering in this album is just out of this world.
When I listen to some songs of his recent albums and include songs of VTV in
the mix, there is a definite difference in terms of higher clarity and
crispness in VTVto me, one of ARR's best sonic reproductions in a long,
long time. Even within the more musically dense areas of the album, like the
ending of Hosana, there is a distinct clarity and sound precision with each
layer, each track being audible using good volume proportion. Hats off to the
team!

On a separate but related topic, check out the range of actual sounds and
instruments on this album.so colorful and beautiful, as my friend put it,
like a mosaic..in all its beauty.

It's a beautiful, beautiful piece of artwork that deserves respect, which is
why we should be buying the CD...the whole package, and pay our respects to the
ARR lead team behind this career high masterpiece. How privileged we are!!!

[arr] Live in concert on Australia Network Channel.

2010-01-16 Thread partha
Hi Rahmaniacs,

I was little disappointed in the morning that I will be missing ARR's live in
concert in Sydney but I think god heard my grief and he graced on me to surf
Australia Network channel probably only to watch ARR live in concert.

First things first about the show, ARRji was looking STUNNING!!! with his new
hair style (I probably think he had this hair style earlier too) secondly the
keyboardist simply rocked the show with his little performance before ARRji
singing MUSTAFA! MUSTAFA!!! and that was just AWESOME! and asusual AZAD was
simply superb on MAUSAM AND ESCAPE. Overall the entire show was on lines with
all the JAI HO concerts happened in India. Everything seemed similar, including
Hariharan making the crowd sing along for sometime. I think, of all the JAI HO
concerts HYDERABAD was THE BEST in terms of Sound quality, songs and the crowd.

I cannot miss on commenting Tanvi Shah's performance, Delhi6 song on the loud
speaker was just cool and Blaaze emerging from the crowd and sing HUMMA HUMMA
was good but a repeatitive. All these a side, I was really really happy that I
did not miss on this LIVE IN CONCERT. THANK YOU GOD AND THANK YOU ARRJI.

Take care,

Regards,
P'ARR'THA.

Excellent meaningful observation. You took words out of my mouth. I love her
rendering, even Chinnamma Chilakamma. She feels the song.
