Re: [arr] Endhiran - Initial Reactions - Mixed Feelings

2010-07-31 Thread Ramesh R
I'm in the same boat but perhaps for different reasons. It's been a long while
since I could really dig into an ARR album. I like few parts of Pudhiya
Manidha,
the elongated brass/string chords in Kadhal Annukal (isn't that reminiscent of
Don Davis/Navras?), the African vocals in Kilimanjaro, the bizarre, saccharine
classical section in Chitti Dance. I can't listen to the others. It's just not
my kind of music again. I treat each of the recent ARR release like how I
listen
to a Morricone giallo from the 70s-- a few gems in between lots of
'unlistenable' stuff.

I'm glad that I'm in the minority and it's good to see many of you liking the
music.

didn't like it .. I skipped the songs initially and had to force myself to
listen to all songs.. that is not i want. But, it's because it is not my taste.
I am sure there will be people who enjoy these styles.

[arr] The Enigma Influence in Puthiya Manidha!

2010-07-31 Thread AJ
Guys,

Did anyone else hear the Enigma Influence in Puthiya Manidha? Rahman did a
beautiful job in incorporating some of Enigma's (Michael Cretu's) electronica
style in this song..to me it's unmistakable! Nothing at all copied, but
just the overall style and sound is very Enigmaish!

Way to go ARR! Kya Baat Hai! What a masterpiece of a track Michael Cretu
himself would be quite impressed if he heard this song!

He wud have signed few other films before they approached him.Though AR wants

Btw, after oscars, AR has already said that he needs to finish all his current

[arr] Re: Endhiran - Initial Reactions - Mixed Feelings

2010-07-31 Thread Rivjot
Heard first 4 songs so far, my initial feelings:

I was extremely worried about "Irumbile Oru Idhaiyam" as Kash'n'Krissy was
doing the rap and I did not like her rap in "Dochey" (found it cheesy) but I am
plesantly surprised with her work in "Irumbile Oru Idhaiyam" and loving the
rap!!
"Puthiya Manidha" - Intro is superb! Khatija Rahman - she needs to have a solo
song!!!
"Kadal Anukkal" - I was not impressed with promo, seemed as if its going to be
along the lines of Elay (Sakkrakatti) or any other guitar based song, however
the complete song is distinctly different
"Chitti Dance" seems to be inspired from Liquid dance (Slumdog Millionaire)?

I am loving the songs. I never thought that we could hear these kinds of songs
in a Tamil movie. The last time that I said wow for an ARR song was Aaromale.
This album has 2 of them - Pudhiya manidha and Irumbile. Just waiting to get my
hands on the CD.

I am also happy that ARR is using Shreya more frequently nowadays and hope that
it continues. She is brilliant, probably the best of this generation. Love her
singing in Kadal Anukkal.

FYI, songs are available for listening on Raaga.com.

@chord & Madhavan,  thanks :) .. I guess I was too soon to make a comment
about the album. on repeated listening, I have started liking Puthiya
Manidha. and some parts of other songs. but Arima seems to be totally out of
my taste. I did like the Oruvan Oruvan from muthu a lot. however, this is
not growing on me for some reason. i tend to skip it.

i will post again after a week if it has started indeed growing on me :)

meanwhile those who liked the album.. i envy you. :) enjoy it guys. really
happy to see a lot of good comments after a long time.

I feel really sorry for those who couldn't connect to the songs! As you made
a honest statement, not everyone has same taste...For me, the entire
soundtrack sounds very innovative...Sometimes, even smaller elements within
the song is enough to create that magic instead of a full length melody...I

Since I started the topic, I guess I'll try to clarify some things. And sorry
if I offended anyone with my initial mail, once again I apologize. And thanks
for such beautiful replies. :) I expected and really missed some lines of
criticisms. ;)

Ok, I told that it was solely my personal opinion in that mail. So, I don't
even expect if no one agrees with me here too. What I was going to say is about
my music palette. Ok. I can't understand the nuances of any music. I can't
identify any raga of any musical piece. But, I listen to them so carefully
because I don't want to miss even a single faint sound any artist or recording
artist adds in the track.

I hear pure classical music (Carnatic, Hindustani, Western Classical etc). I
was totally in love with the songs in my mother tongue Malayalam (not so as of
now!). In semi-classical music, I am not ashamed that I take pride in saying
that I have heard most of the best ones in Malayalam, and some in Tamil and
Telugu. I hear Tamil film songs by Harris, Yuvan and many other composers,
especially who are from KM school.:) Telugu, I know and hear some catchy
numbers. Have tried all Mickey J Meyer tracks. But couldn't continue following
them religiously. Kannada was foreign to me till I reached Bangalore(Raghu
Dixit, Mano Murthy, Guru Kiran etc are superstars!). Bollywood mass music also
I hear for 2-3 times and know that it's in templates and leave them out of my
hearing list, but some still are very good..like Amit Trivedi, V-S, SEL, Pritam
(his original melodies are good sometimes!) etc are also some tracks I hear.
Then if I stumble upon Punjabi,
Rajasthani, Manipuri etc I hear them too. Then because of the high prevalence
of English music channels and many original fans (and also the so-called-fans!)
of the same around me, I hear English tracks ranging from Rock to Pop to
Country to Blues to Jazz to Reggae to Rap to whatever; it doesn't matter to me.
Another dimension is the film Soundtracks or the OSTs. If I hear any piece, I
get it from IMDB or else, I get them from net by searching in the net. If I
understand that it's not English and if there is no info on soundtracks (now
many sites maintain though! still some obscure movies are hard to find!), I
hear it may be 10-20 times and get a word or a phrase and search them in the
net and finally I'll get them. There are lot of tidbits info too I get with
them, which makes me realize that World music and movies are far more enriching
and brilliant than the normal English stuff. Ok, again that's my opinion. Latin
American Music also is another area
of exploration. Then I hear completely Electronica, Techno, Trance etc

So,

1. This is all what I hear in MUSIC. :)

2. I understand only Malayalam, Tamil (not so completely!), Hindi and English.
:)

3. And which track I like and not like, no one will know. It remains to myself.
:)

So, in simple words, I hear some intelligent fusion of the different genres and
elements mentioned in what's mentioned above, coming together when ARR does
many tracks. I can trace them from the beginning of his film music career (but
dont' ask me, it's a sub-conscious process!!).

So, personally when I see him collaborate with many other artists, I
wholeheartedly wait for the product and mainly I want to see what are they
adding to ARR's music. And when I hear them as I said above, if I like them or
not, that info will stay with me and me only. :)

If I sounded like boasting about myself (even I feel so now after reading it
once!), I can only request you all to consider this a clarification. And I am
still exploring all these interesting genres and ranges of music.. :)

Sorry for this long mail (Initial mail was better I guess!!)take care you
all. Enjoy Endhiran... :)

Roshan,

Appreciate your input. This album will def not appeal to everyone. I like how
you said, "it's not my taste" instead of "what's wrong with Rahman" or "ARR has
lost it..." nonsense. I wish more could express disappointment like you do.

Give it a few more hearings...maybe you can salvage something from this album.
If not, it's ok! Look forward to the next one and enjoy a huge ARR library
collection that we already have.

I'm totally in a trance state after listening to Pudhiya Manidha guyz. I've

progresses from Robotic voice to Rahman's voice to Rahman's dauther's voice and
finally beats and to SPB's million dollar voice...priceless song...The layers
in this song are so amazin...

2010-07-31 Thread Madhavan Rajan
Thought of sharing my feelings about the songs...

Puthiya Manitha...Rocking Techno Stuff!!! Khatija's voice is straight from
heart...Excellent variations by SPB...

Kadhal Anukkal...This song is composed so tightly that you just don't want
to end the song!...Scintillating interludes...The way Vijay Prakash starts
the song is so stylish...No words to express Shreya Goshal's voice...

Irumbile Oru Idhayam...Very futuristic...AR's vocals are stylish
particularly when he reaches high pitch...

Arima Arima...Elegant, Energetic, reverberating!! Just displays the Grandeur
of Rajini...

Kilimanjaro...Thumping beats! Amazing vocals by Javed ali and
Chinmayi...Tribal vocals suit well...

Chitti Dance...Each musical genre competing with each other...End result -
Treat to our ears!! Something never tried before...Rap by Pravin mani is
excellent...

Innovative lyrics in many places...Kudos to Vairamuthu sir, Pa. Vijay, and
Karki...

Endhiran songs - In one word - A Revolution in Indian film music!

Thank you so much sir for treating us again!!! Kudos to the entire unit who
has put their hard work in bringing out this grand package!!!

Same here, Chord. The songs aren't my cup of tea. Finding it difficult to
connect to the album but I am loving Kadal Anukkal. I am not sure if noisy is
the word but perhaps loud and busy, I feel. Like you, I am missing a Sahara in
the album. Would have loved a full-on melody in this soundtrack. I could
connect
much more to Raavanan and VTV and perhaps even Sivaji. Despite this, I think
the
soundtrack delivers to the mass appeal required for a Rajni movie and now a
Rajni-Shankar movie. It's a full-on commercial package taking into account the
cast and crew's image. Really happy that it works for lots of people on here.
Looking forward to connecting to this soundtrack more.

Just got a listen to the whole album. Mixed feelings.love some
thingsdidn't like other things. 3-4 songs are outstanding.rest seem
kind of filler, though bright in spots. Inconsistent, hodge podgy and too
noisy
in places, though bold and fit for a Rajini movie. Very massy and entertaining
with a lot of classy elements too. Didn't like the retro 80s electronica
sounds..way too cheesy...Rahman could have used more progressive,
contemporary electro sounds and sound effects (except for the first song which
did sound very contemporary and progressive!) Oh, and I also could not catch
onto melodies, though they are therehard to remember and hum melodies,
unlike what we heard in Sivaji along the lines of Sahara.

Will write a more detailed review once I listen to the songs at least several
more times, absorb them better after several days.

had all the elements suiting that. On the other hand, Robo walks slow,
talks slow, works intelligently! Both the scenarios are different, so

[arr] Re: A R Rahman - Isn't he doing GOOD?

2010-07-31 Thread myown_niche

Then if I stumble upon Punjabi, Rajasthani, Manipuri etc I hear them too. Then
because of the high prevalence of English music channels and many original fans
(and also the so-called-fans!) of the same around me, I hear English tracks
ranging from Rock to Pop to Country to Blues to Jazz to Reggae to Rap to
whatever; it doesn't matter to me. Another dimension is the film Soundtracks or
the OSTs. If I hear any piece, I get it from IMDB or else, I get them from net
by searching in the net. If I understand that it's not English and if there is
no info on soundtracks (now many sites maintain though! still some obscure
movies are hard to find!), I hear it may be 10-20 times and get a word or a
phrase and search them in the net and finally I'll get them. There are lot of
tidbits info too I get with them, which makes me realize that World music and
movies are far more enriching and brilliant than the normal English stuff. Ok,
again that's my opinion. Latin American Music also is another area of
exploration.

Alphascript Publishing sells free articles as expensive books

An Amazon.com book search on 9

Publishing.[nan
1]1003
of the books are described as "by John McBrewster, Frederic P. Miller,
and Agnes F. Vandome". They are called editors in the book listings. It
seems the only content of the many books is free Wikipedia articles with no
sign that these three people have contributed to them.

The articles are often poorly printed with features such as missing
characters from foreign languages, and numerous images of arrows where
Wikipedia had links. It appears much better to read the original articles
for free at the Wikipedia website than paying a lot of money for what has
been described as a scam or hoax. Advertising for the books at Amazon and
elsewhere does not reveal the free source of all the content. It is only
revealed inside the books which may satisfy the license requirements for
republishing of Wikipedia articles.

In simple words .. Blueray disk is just another disk which can hold from
25GB data to 500GB !! Normally between 25GB(Single layer) and 50GB ( Double
layers)
You need "Blueray players" to play these Disks ... Bluerays contains 1080p
videos and Audio of max 8 channels ( max 28mbps ) in so many different
formats such as DTS , DTS-HD , Dolby digital plus , dolby digital ,LPCM ,
Dolby trueHD etc etc !! The format depends on Mixing studios ,they can opt
for any of these supporting format they want

If i am to buy a Blue-ray disk and a blue-ray player the i will at first
buy atleast a 20 inch monitor and 5.1 creative speaker..otherwise i wont be
experiencing the magic of a blueray disk !! U dont actually need these to
play a blue-ray disk but to enjoy it fully u must need them !! and about PC
configuration ...i would say that an Dual core PC with an latest motherboard
with 2GB of RAM will play these disks just fine !! Dont go for an
old-school computer !! as these video's bit-rate can cross 40mbps easily !!
Where an DVD's bitrate is about only 9.8mbps !

I think any latest video players can play a blue-ray disk !! as it's not
actually a new thing ! try this > *KMPlayer

( To Clarify AR has nothing to do with this video player ,,many people asked
me if this video player is released by ARR , as i use it :P )

But i seriously doubt who will buy these movies Blue-rays ...Both can get
the award of "Worst film Ever made" . !! and watching Indian movies on
blue-ray sounds bit foolish to me ..as there wont be enough sound effects to
fill all those 8 channels !! and these movies doesnt require all those

Rajini walks fast, talks fast, has a unique style! So, Oruvan Oruvan
had all the elements suiting that. On the other hand, Robo walks slow,
talks slow, works intelligently! Both the scenarios are different, so
pls don't compare!!

[arr] Music review - Endhiran - from Galatta

2010-07-31 Thread Manaf ™
http://tamil.galatta.com/entertainment/livewire/id/Endhiran_songs_Enthiran_songs_rock_Endhiran_music_review_40802.html

*Endhiran songs rock: Read Endhiran music review*
Padma Iyer [July 31, 2010, 1:15:39 PM]
[image: Endhiran songs rock: Read Endhiran music review]

Well, the mystery has begun to unravel. First, we were given stingy glimpses
of the stills of the highly-anticipated*Endhiran*. Right there, our
imagination spread its limitless wings, encouraged by the flamboyance of the
photographs. And now, it’s time to get a taste of the movie's music. Coming
from A.R. Rahman, one is already set to listen to techno beats and snazzy
rhythms. When the movie is titled *Endhiran* (which means Robot), we know
there’s no room for the ordinary. Both expectations are thoroughly
satisfied.

Produced by Sun Pictures, directed by Shankar, starring Rajinikanth and
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the songs of *Endhiran* are released under the Think
Music label.

*songs
.

The album takes off with 'Pudhiya Manidha' in the voices of S.P.
Balasubrahmanyam, A.R. Rahman and his daughter Khatija Rahman. In keeping
with the futuristic theme of the movie' the opening notes are very techno. A
robotic rendering of the first verse is followed by slow strong chanting
‘Pudhiya Manidha Boomiku Va’. The song goes on to sing the praise of the
Robot and it’s sublimity. When the pace gradually picks up, SPB’s vocals
overpower the others'.

The next song is 'Kadhal Anukkal', a poetic love song in the voices of Vijay
Prakash and Shreya Ghoshal. The mellifluous opening guitar strumming is
simple yet soul-stirring. This is a typical ARR melody of the 2000s with
pacey beats in the background and a gentle melody in the foreground. The
first musical interlude with the distinctive note of bagpipes has a soothing
feel to it, but when the techno beats surface in the second interlude, we
are reminded that we are still in the *Endhiran* album! Needless to say,
Vijay and Shreya bring soul to the composition – they always do!

'Irumbilae Oru Idhayam' is the next number. The lyrics are quite touching
and bring out ‘the Robot with emotions’ angle. ARR has sung the song
himself, and as always, arouses our emotions with finesse. You can’t miss
the female voice singing 'Super Sonic Super Star' from time to time in the
background. Once she even calls him 'Robotic Hypnotic Super Star!' The song
has a heavy dose of quirky English lyrics and to top it all , we have a
medium-pace rap from Kash 'n' Krissy that kind of grows on you.

What follows the heavily westernized number is the theme music, titled
'Chitti Dance Showcase', a very techno, speedy theme. It starts off with few
lines of rap in English and quickly converts into quick-paced classical
notes sung to heavy western percussion, a very interesting piece repeated a
few times in the composition. The song has a heavy dose of electric drums;
when the drums fall silent, they are replaced by a serene violin orchestra
with a divine harmony.

'Arima Arima' opens with the royal rhythm of drums, like it’s marking the
entry of an Emperor, in this case, Endhiran. While the chorus chants his
praises, calling him even the Silicon Singam, there is a tinge of pain in
the voice of Sadhana Sargam. The thuds of the drums continue all through the
number, with *Endhiran* sounding every bit the tough guy in the voice of
Hariharan. This majestic composition has a shade of melancholy, bringing out
the contrast in the psychological mindsets of the characters.

While all these songs have an obvious attachment to techno beats and
futuristic rhythms, the next song 'Kilimanjaro' is completely removed from
these moods. Tribal beats and tribal chanting persist throughout the number
without the slightest mention of Endhiran or anything robotic throughout.
The lyrics are on the sensual side. The sound of the drums overpowers all
other instruments in this number sung by Javed Ali and Chinmayi.

'Boom Boom Robot-da' is the last number in the album. This fully techno,
upbeat number (sung by Krithi Sagathia, Swetha Mohan and Tanvi Shah,
interspersed with Tamil rap from Yogi B) is a mish-mash of fast techno
sounds and a moderately pacey tune. The lyrics reiterate the greatness of
the robot and the unimaginable avenues it opens up for the development of
humanity.

Not knowing Bob Marley is more a reflection of musical ignorance than his

ads/anthems..etc.let the man branch out!...if ARR took your advice..there
would be no slumdog millionaire (no oscars, grammy, international acclaim.etc.)

I am surprised to know that Gustavo Santaolalla is doing Dhobi Ghaat. he has
done some good work in Babel. and I can see that Aamir ropes in some big names
for his projects. the wikipedia page says Aamir approached ARR first but he
declined due to his schedule. I must say he shouldn't have declined. for me it
is better to decline any other India director's movie to do Aamir's (any
director's except Mani).

Endhiran

Kilimanjaro, a duet with Javed Ali. I was quite tickled and was giggling about
the lyrics. Really fun lyrics I thought. Javed Ali is a soft spoken, sweet
person. And really loved his style of rendition. The session was super fun
through and through. From the time I stepped in to Rahman sir's studio and
recorded this song I have been praying for it.
Its hard to describe how do I spell the "tcht tcht" in the song? Well I guess
you ll know what I am trying to write about once you hear it. And that I think
is my favourite portion in the song.
I presume this is the song that was shot in Peru / Machu Pichu with all the
fancy headgear. And Superstar's style - Thalaivaa! !!! I cannot wait to
watch the film and scream all through the FDFS.
I think the first ever FDFS of a film in my life was Shivaji. Cannot forget
that day. Whatte-n experience. I couldn't hear a single dialogue. But that is
not the point is it? All we can do is cheer and scream every time Thalaivar
came on screen.
And now to wait for the film...
Please do buy the original CDs.

[arr] Milliblog reviews Enthiran

2010-07-31 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

Enthiran (Music review), Tamil – A R Rahman

Posted by: Karthik In: Tamil OST

Enthiran has two show-stopper tunes – the phenomenally lilting Kadhal anukkal,
that hits all the catchy, addictive notes; and Arima arima, that showcases
musical grandeur in an absolutely awe-inspiring range! Kilimanjaro is Shankar’s
splurging-money-in-exotic-locale song and seems more visual than musical. Of
the four, ‘robotic’ songs, it’s odd that Rahman treats them with a textbook,
80s robot sound overdosing on vocalizing effects and instrumentation bordering
on Ross Geller’s (Friends), especially Chitti Dance Showcase! Khatija does
sound ethereal in Pudhiya manidha, spearheaded by SPB’s dependability, while
Boom boom and Irumbilae oru are middling. Customary soundtrack that perhaps
takes the ‘robot’ too literally.

Keywords: Endhiran, Enthiran

Hearing enthiran from morning, its completely a fresh journey it takes lot
of time to understand the music, so before commenting/rating on any song or
even the album make sure you have heard the album atleast 100 times.

[arr] Endhirian Songs - truly a global album

2010-07-31 Thread frederic
What must have been there in Rehman's mind while composing Endhiran songs? to
satisfy 3 segments - superstar's fans, indian and global music lovers - and
certainly rehman has won that! amazing sound design!!! truly a global
album though the intro of Pudhiya Manidha reminds us of the old hindi hit
Dum Mera Dum, it's the best cut in the album. good percussion works and rehman
has reworked the beats by adding his own style to make it sound more
contemporary! the songs of endhiran will definitely take indian film music to
greater heights.
happy listening!

[arr] Chinmayi's Endhiran experience

2010-07-31 Thread Thulasi Ram
 Endhiran

Kilimanjaro, a duet with Javed Ali. I was quite tickled and was giggling
about the lyrics. Really fun lyrics I thought. Javed Ali is a soft spoken,
sweet person. And really loved his style of rendition. The session was super
fun through and through. From the time I stepped in to Rahman sir's studio
and recorded this song I have been praying for it.
Its hard to describe how do I spell the "tcht tcht" in the song? Well I
guess you ll know what I am trying to write about once you hear it. And that
I think is my favourite portion in the song.
I presume this is the song that was shot in Peru / Machu Pichu with all the
fancy headgear. And Superstar's style - Thalaivaa I cannot wait to
watch the film and scream all through the FDFS.
I think the first ever FDFS of a film in my life was Shivaji. Cannot forget
that day. Whatte-n experience. I couldn't hear a single dialogue. But that
is not the point is it? All we can do is cheer and scream every time
Thalaivar came on screen.
And now to wait for the film...
Please do buy the original CDs.

What hardware do we need to play a blu ray disc? I think a normal pc/

would we need for this? does blu ray plays in wmp or vlc or winamp?

what exactly are technical superiority of a music/ film in blu ray? do
we need addtional capability on monitor and music system to enjoy it?

with such high rates, I don't think there will be many takers for it
