it is the only area that rahman needs to look into
seriously to rectify sound defects in future
otherwise his music is good.. and if he rectifies
this, he is in 100% perfection to final results.
louder sounds happen in some of rahman songs which
i am not here to list out but to sample i can say
another no. Tauba tauba song in Vande Mataram album,
that big bang sound too many instruments are raw
jarring effect all pulls back rahmans voice finally
i fail to enjoy dat song... i feel it is the job of
sound engineers to adjust the instrumentals in
proper proportion from being sound jarring.
rahman has to guide them finally to see dat balance
in all.., vocals should sound clearly nicely,
instrumentals must not push vocals back.., at the
same time instrumentals should not be in high
decibals dat prevents from crystal clear soothing
soft sound to ears even it is big drums or more
instruments that can give comfortable bangs than
  being loud jarring..
only then we can enjoy d songs to the fullest.

  AR RAHMAN
  Musical genius
Allah Rakha Rahman is a celebrated Indian music composer who
produces 1500 musical films each year. His flair for innovative
sounds
has transformed the film music in the country with his emphasis on
fusion between the western and the traditional music instruments.
Born in
Madras to a musically affluent family, AR Rahman
started learning the piano at the tender age of four. At the
young age
of eleven, he started his career by joining legendary music
maestro
Illaiyaraja's troupe as a keyboard player. His experience enabled
him to
earn a scholarship to the famed
Trinity College of Music at Oxford University from where he
obtained a
degree in Western Classical Music. It wasn't long before AR
Rahman caught
  director Mani Ratnam's
attention. He signed on the composer to score the music for the
film
'Roja'; after which Rahman became a household name. AR Rahman
went on to
creat music for blockbuster Indian films
including 'Bombay', 'May', 'Madham', 'Rangeela', 'Dil Se', 'Mangal
Pandey - The Rising', 'Rang De Basanti'. 'Fire' was his first
international soundtrack. To commemorate 50 years of Indian
Independence
  in 1997, AR
Rahman composed the `Vande Mataram', a tribute to the motherland
and
featured songs to mark the three colours of the Indian Flag. The
album
was a mega success and sold over 1.2 million copies in India and
did
reasonably well internationally too. Since his introduction to
Indian
  cinema, he has worked on
close to sixty films. After creating waves in Roja in 1992, AR
Rahman's
career has gone from strength to strength by introducing a new
ambience
to Indian cinema and being one of the main contributors to the
film
  industry's crossover appeal.

[arr] What will Jodha Akbar offer musically?

2007-08-05 Thread Ajit
It's getting close to a new Rahman release. If JA is releasing in
early Oct, the music may be out next month. Wonder how Rahman will
compose for this one. My expectations are high, but I'm going to
avoid hype. Last I checked, Rahman in an interview mentioned 6 songs
total. With the type of movie in mind (historical epic), perhaps we
can expect a semi-classical effort with traditional Indian
instruments and lots of melody (ala Zubeida, Lagaan). We already
know there will be a Qawali (Khwaja Mere Khwaja) with Sonu and Alka.
The movie will have to be a success for the music to go far with the
masses in this case, although us ARR fans will relish it. Ashutosh
and Rahman have an impressive record together and hopefully, this
project will add to their success.

Been a successful run for ARR lately with RDB, Guru, SOK, and Shivaji
all going far. I just wish ARR could provide us with greater
accessibility to communicate with him directly (online
question/answer or more appearances on this forum). We know how busy
he is, but I still wish we could have more opportunities to
communicate with him directly while respecting his privacy. I also
wish LOTR and Provoked soundtracks could be made available to us as
well as updates on his own projects (Conference of the Birds, etc).
Provoked should have been available to us. Yes, we got Pray for me
Brother and One Love, but I am craving for a more ambitious project
on the likes of Vande Mataram. Come on Rahman, it's been ten years
now. We're craving for a full fledged solo effort from you!

I am revisiting Guru and Water and immensely enjoying these two
soundtracks. Tell me any other composer today in India who can score
as high quality compositions as Piya Ho, Shauk Hai, Tere Bina, Jaage,
Ay Hairathe, Chan Chan, Bangari Marori. Nobody.

[arr] Music release date for Jodha Akbar?

2007-06-18 Thread Ajit
If movie is releasing on Oct 12, music should be out in September
perhaps. Looking forward this period score and hearing Rahman's
interpretation of music at that time. Can imagine him using a lot of
tabla, flute, sarangi, sitar, and other moghul type instruments with
lots of classical, raaga based melodies. But, there are always
surprises from Rahman, so let's see.

A.R Rahman is riding a global wave of enthusiasm for India's films
and musicals, a genre he helped define

When most people think of Bollywood, they picture colourful movies
with energetic dancing and larger-than-life characters. But there
is
much more to Bollywood than that.

It's a cultural phenomenon that is sweeping the western world,
providing creative inspiration for everyone from fashion designers
to
home decorators and even the television producers of The Simpsons.

Bollywood enters the limelight in Vancouver on Sunday when composer
A.R. Rahman, dubbed the Mozart of the Madras by Time magazine,
takes the stage at the Pacific Coliseum as part of his 3rd
Dimension
 North American Tour.

The show is expected to attract a big audience, says Rahman's
promoter, Raj Subramaniam, adding that his first concert tonight in
San Francisco sold out days in advance.

He's a worldwide phenomenon, Subramaniam explains.

Not even the international cult fame of composer Ennio Morricone --
awarded an honorary Oscar this year for his 400-odd soundtracks --
can touch the popularity of Rahman, sometimes claimed to be the
best-
 selling composer in recorded history.

The BBC estimates Rahman has sold more than 100 million albums
worldwide. He has scored for over 80 films and six albums
comprising
 more than 600 songs.

Born in 1967 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Rahman is rooted in the
southern
tradition of Indian music. He is the son of composer R.K. Sekhar,
and
his biography reads like one of his movies. His career began as an
instrumentalist at age nine, following his father's untimely death.
By age 17, he was creating jingles for TV commercials.

Rahman earned a scholarship to study classical music at Oxford
University in England, earning his first hit at age 25 with his
soundtrack for the film Roja in 1992.

He collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber for the stage musical
Bombay
Dreams in 2002, and also created the music for the stage version of
The Lord of the Rings which premiered in Toronto in 2006.

Mainstream Western audiences have had limited exposure to Rahman's
film work (more than 100 titles and counting); the soundtracks to
Lagaan (2001) and Water (2005) are perhaps his best known.

Rahman is quite modest about his accomplishments, attributing all
his
successes to Allah. He recently told an ABC/Australia
reporter: When
I got my first break I thought, 'I want our music to go around the
world, being appreciated by all people around the globe.'

So that made me take efforts to do little changes, changing the
beats and getting harmonies and chord progressions and stuff like
that, with traditional Indian melodies. And I think something magic
 happened.

He admits his perfectionism has given him a reputation for being
difficult; some of the playback singers featured on his soundtracks
have called him a tyrant. Rahman shrugs off such criticism, seeing
himself as a composer for hire along with the rest of a film's crew.

He wowed Los Angeles last season with a Hollywood Bowl spectacular
that combined song, dance, and projected movie clips. His Vancouver
appearance promises more of the same, with a troupe of more than
100
 performers.

If a music artist wants to blossom into a full-pledged person,
it's not enough if he knows only classical music; nor is it enough
if he's well-versed only in ragas and techniques. Instead, he should
be a knowledgeable person interested in life and philosophy. In his

[arr] Why was the filmfare performance botched up?

2007-02-26 Thread Ajit
ARR didn't look comfortable on stage singing (not too surprising since
he usually sings with his keyboard and is more of a studio singer than
a live performance singer). He was singing off tune (baisura),
esp Tere Bina. I don't fault him for that entirely, since the the
sound system had problems (the mike volumes were very low) and certain
tracks were almost inaudable. What happened to the nine song medley?
LOTR music? Pray For Me Brother? He only sang two songs (Khalbali
and Tere Bina).

BTW, I'm very happy he won the best music award, but he should have
won the best BGM award too.

[arr] Indian release of Water - original or updated version?

2007-02-21 Thread Ajit
When we heard Water's music the first time, it had leaked out and the
songs were in their original form. When the actual release happened
with the movie soundtrack, the songs had been updated to include newer
arrangements, etc. and Bangari Marori was cut. Will the Indian
release have the original version with Bangari Marori?

[arr] Rahman and his brilliant chords

2007-02-16 Thread Ajit
One aspect of Rahman's music that I truly find remarkable is his use
of harmonies. His knowledge and application of chords is unmatched in
the history of Indian music IMHO. He can use the same melodic line,
apply a difference chordal sequence, and the melody sounds like a
different melody. Now, that's genius.

One example, in the song Tu Bin Bataye from RDB, notice how the
melody sounds when Madhrushree sings the Meethi Lagi... line.
Then, listen to the same melodic line when Naresh Iyer enters the
first time after the saxaphone music interlude. It's the same melody
as Madhushree's line, but the chords are all together different. It
almost sounds like a different melody. And in Naresh's line, Rahman
adds the choral track which adds so much depth and dimension. A
simple melody made even more beautiful by Rahman's harmonics and
arrangements.

There are many other exmples, too many to cite here.

First u targeted the directors to mention you want to see

Added to that If that is your such fans' wish then Fans in other

could be not be satisfied by any means. Sorry to ask something in
general to all such dissatisfied fans, whether are they correct in
all, 100% ? If you analyse like this you cannot enjoy any outcome of
present entertainment. Its better to realize enjoy the works as it
is... presented. Otherwise you will not find satisfaction forever.
Take life as it comes. No fuss needed.

I like to refer what gr8 visuals we see in Water movie songs, a
serious theme. It is ordinary. But songs are extraordinary. We do not
need visuals at all, when we able to appreciate any kind of good
music. Even in garments designing, MISMATCH is also a fashion than
usual matching. So if visuals do not match just forget enjoy music.
For that it is not fair to pin-point certain things directly or
indirectly. Or intentions ?

To me my friends, when it is music, we wont switch on video
songs for... that will distract from enjoying music completely. And if
we wish to see video, wont try to match the audio and just enjoy the
visuals. Visuals in songs are not depicting reality. Just an
exaggeration, imagination even absurd to say be it any movie, if you
analyse deep in your way to say people do not dance daily or do not
sing nearly 5 mts. while shopping or while doing any action for that
sake be it a simple song.

Kindly consider my post in right spirit. Rgds

For them, that is the sticking point, that Rahman's songs are often
too difficult to sing (unless one is a trained and talented singer)
and one cannot hum them as easily. Seems like an overly simplistic

songs are beautiful, full of melody, the melodic contours are often

One of the reasons why the song Tere Bina is so popular is perhaps
that along with being beautiful and brilliant, the melody itself is

[arr] Why are ARR's songs butchered in films?

2007-02-08 Thread Ajit
I just saw Guru. Good film, but I can see why the music was not
appreciated as much after watching the movie alone. Most people
thought the music was just ok. Although the audio was popular, the
movie did nothing to advance the audio further and may in fact have
dimnished the audio's value. That's because the songs were not
picturized well, esp. Ay Hairathe and Jaage Hain. And BTW, I don't
see what is such a big deal about Ek Lo Ek Muft. The placement in the
film and the visuals were perfectly fine for me. Baffles me why
people are making such a stink about it.

The only director I know that has done justice to Rahman's songs on
films has been Ashutosh Gowarikar. Hats off to the man. Check out
Lagaan and Swades. Most songs fully picturized and not cut to pieces.
 Can't wait for Jodha Akbar.

[arr] Why all the Ek Lo Ek Muft bashing??????

2007-01-29 Thread Ajit
I can't believe all the bad comments reviewers and moviegoers are
expressing about that song. Ok, it's not the best composition in the
world, but the tune and rhythm is catchy and playful, rustic, folk.
It's very situational. This is what the PB reviewer has to say:

Rehman is OK, although Rehman displays a flair for butchering Urdu
words when he sings. The one number which was sheer torture was Ek
lo, ek muft.

(Give Rahman a break dude for his singing.for a Tamilian who never
learned Urdu formally, I'd say Rahman's pronounciations are guite
admirable.and it's a fact that his so called butchering has
never had an effect on how popular his songs have become or how well
they are liked.cases in point..Yeh Jo Desh.Dil Se Re..)

Anyway, back to my original point. I think Rahman had high hopes for
this song to become popular once the film released, but I think the
opposite has happened. People are simply hating it, and I'm thinking
it's because of the placement of the song in the narrative and how it
was picturized more than the actual composition itself. Many thought
the song was totally out of synch.

[arr] Exquisite harmonies in Pray for me Brother

2007-01-22 Thread Ajit
Have been listening to this song for the past few days. The melody is
quite simple and with a catchy rhythm, it stays in your head. But,
the brilliance of this song lies in the extraordinary harmonic
accompaniments, especially the vocal sections. Vocal layerings are
out of this world. During the rap section, the female vocal harmonic
accompaniment is just beautiful with an Indian classical melody and
soft vocal tones. And finally, the chord progressions in the song are
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. It's the chordal progressions which add those
special surprise elements throughout the song, as if on a journey
with breathtaking twists and turns. Rahman using a lot of minor 6th
and 7th triadic variations which add an immense richness to the
harmony. Especially take note the ending, when Rahman starts
singins Round and round. The chords in that section are
mindblowing. I tried playing that on my keyboard and they are tough
to follow, but I eventually figured them out with a lot of effort and
time.

[arr] Guru seems to be drawing a lot of extreme opinions

2007-01-17 Thread Ajit
While most reviews for Guru are positive, the public response has been
very mixed. Some calling it one of the best movies, others saying
it's terrible. Probably depends on one's expectations for the movie
and individual taste. I am sure Mani put a lot of hard work into the
film, and such films, publicly popular or not, should be applauded for
the courage to make it and to attempt to raise the standards of Hindi
Cinema by creating thought provoking story lines that are different
from the usual massala films. Mani Ratnam has created excellent
films, but has failed to get a hit up North. Who knows why.

As far as Rahman's music, be it known that both Rahman and Ratnam have
gone for a lighter approach to the music this time around
intentionally. The songs have become popular, there is no doubt about
that, so there is appeal and likeability. Again, expectations play a
big role in how you like or dislike Guru's songs or BGM. I am pretty
confident that Rahman has not lost his talent, his flair, his magic.
Nobody loses gifted abilities in life unnless through trauma. Rahman
just likes to experiment and move in different directions. I for one
am glad about Rahman's tremendous diversity in output. I may prefer
certain styles of Rahman or miss certain aspects of his music in the
past that he is not focusing on now, but that doesn't mean Rahman is
going downhill or whatever you want to call it. Guru's music is just
one more unique color in the brilliant spectrum of Rahman's career.

I do wish Rahman's output in films was more prolific and that he would
do more independent, solo projects.

[arr] I predict Jodha Akbar's music will be an absolute stunner

2006-12-25 Thread Ajit
The right elements are coming together in Jodha Akbar for Rahman to
strike pure gold. He is working with Gowarikar who clearly respects
Rahman's scope in music and himsef has a very fine taste in music
(Lagaan and Swades). Rahman loves to score classical music for films
and since JA is a period film of the classical era, there will be no
bounds for Rahman's fire to be unleashed. And finally, the film is a
romantic filmRahman always gives his best music for romantic
stories.

The music of Jodha Akbar will probably be one of Rahman's most finest
creations...an album of pure class, melody, depth, sound, ethnic
brilliance. I predict it will surpass Zubeidaa's brilliance. If
music pandits have not bowed to Rahman yet, they will after hearing
Jodha Akbar's music. The music will be popular as well, given the
strong melody and Rahman's penchance for catchy tunes. This will not
be another Anu Malik's Umraon Jaan.

I may be sounding a bit dramatic and far fetched, but this is how
confident I am about the power of Jodha Akbar's music. Can you
imagine...Rajasthani music.classical..folk..man, I CAN'T
WAIT

Lajjo's music will be similarly brilliant.

 Guru
 Rating
 Album of the Month

 What's it about?

'Dil Se' is what the trio of Mani Ratnam, Gulzar and A.R.Rahman has
come up with, which can qualify as one of the all time great scores.
Needless to say, 'Guru' had to achieve the impossible i.e. surpass
'Dil Se'. The composer-director duo of A.R.Rahman and Mani Ratnam have
always pushed boundaries coming up with music and sometimes have been
unsuccessful - which has not prevented them from experimenting.

 Music ***1/2

To get A.R.Rahman, you need to listen and savour his music; as the
multi-layered notes seep in your psyche gradually. Initial hearing of
'Guru' is a plethora of sounds that you might be oblivious to and
getting past the seemingly over-produced tracks will reveal intriguing
compositions. Of the soundtracks, 'Tere Bina' is the showstopper,
which is also a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. 'Barso Re' is a pop
song set in a village of Gujarat. 'Mayya' is too complex to appeal to
a listener (it's darn boring too). The number that is bound to haunt
you is Jaage Hain' a lullaby that transforms into a fervent choir.
'Ek Lo Ek Muft' is a wild composition that is reminiscent of Rahman's
score in 'Daud'. 'Ay Hairathe' is an extension of 'Tere Bina'. The
weakest number of 'Guru's is 'Baazi Laga'.

 Lyrics ***

Gulzar is known to depict the mood of the movie by using phrases of
the language, which is the backdrop to the film and in the case of
'Guru', it's Gujarati, which Gulzar brings out in the whacky 'Ek Lo Ek
Muft'. An expression of anguish, hope and despair in a few words is
attained by the lyricist with 'Jaage Hain Der Tak Hamein Kuch Der Sone
Do... Ek Baar Phir Neend Mein Woh Khwaab Bone Do' To employ a phrase
that takes you off guard is Gulzar's forte, for instance, 'Tere Bina'
has the verse, 'Tere Bina Beswaadi Ratiyan' (the night is insipid
without you). 'Aye Hairathe' depicts the romantic and impish side of a
twosome. 'Baazi Laga' is entertaining (Chupte Chupte Chaand Sitare
Shankar Rahu Hua) but the run-of-the-mill composition is a let down.

 Vocals *

A.R.Rahman is known to surprise the listener by assigning by
unlikely composition to a vocalist, which has most often worked as a
pleasant surprise. 'Barso Re', 'Shreya Ghoshal's first Hindi song for
Rahman is a convoluted composition, but the singer seems to make it
seem effortless. A.R.Rahman's take on Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's unique
style is laced with a remarkable melody - moreover, 'Tere Bina' brings
forth another remarkable singer's voice, that of Chinmayee. One more
masterstroke in 'Guru' is assigning 'Ek Lo Ek Muft' to Bappi Lahiri
who is phenomenal in his singing - that of a 'wasted' rendition.
Hariharan and Alka Yagnik are in fine form too, singing 'Aye Hairathe'.

 Orchestration ***1/2

The orchestration of this Rahman score is a big part of his
individualistic style. The music arrangement of 'Barso Re' does not
match nor augment the composition; mercifully the synth sounds do not
jar. Another facet of Rahman's orchestration that should be curtailed
is excessive use of wind instruments. The flute interlude of 'Mayya'
is just the same as 'San Sana Na' from Anu Malik' Asoka (which was
also arranged by Ranjit Barot). The arrangements of 'Baazi Laga' is a
yawn - one of the most cliched songs in Rahman's repertoire. Effective
instrumentation that stands out are , 'Aye Hairathe' (harmonium and
tabla) and 'Jaage Hain' (violins, cello and choir).

 Recording **

The recording is forward sounding but lacks the detailing in sound.
The separation in the soundtrack is not satisfactory. There is an
audible sibilance in the tracks throughout. The vocals are deficient
of its warmth and natural timbre. The bass lines and rhythm
arrangements in 'Guru' are well recorded.

 Sum Up

It looking for an easy listening, 'Guru' is not that score. No two
ways about 'Guru' being an offbeat score and is unlikely for anyone to
instantly like it. Only the adventurous will appreciate the
multifaceted music. Without a doubt 'Dil Se' was better, but 'Guru' is
not an appalling experience either.

[arr] (semi ARR) About Rahman's favorite - Omkara

2006-12-19 Thread Ajit
The first time I heard this scintillating soundtrack, it had Rahman
quality and style written all over it. Not to take anything away from
Vishal Bharadwaj, whose musical genius is one of bollywood's best kept
secrets. I heard this soundtrack again and it simply is the finest
soundtrack this year and one of the finest in many years in terms of
precisionship, sound quality, exceptional and finely tuned and
selective arrangements, use of acoustic and ethnic instruments,
layering, melody, and overall texture and sleekness. It is truly a
marvelous gift to quality music lovers. If you have not heard this
soundtrack, you are missing something extremely special. There are so
many signature Rahman elements in this soundtrack...crisp, clean
sound, ethnic drums and classical instruments, haunting flutes, lots
of bells and whistles with sound and detailed instrumentation (piano,
acoustic guitar), thick layering and arrangements, and orchestral
prowess.

Not surprising at all that Rahman touts this one as his favorite of
the year. I wish Rahman could come out with more such soundtracks
with greater emphasis on acoustics, ethnic instrumentation, and that
crisp, clean, immaculate sound and to get away from techno muddiness
which has clogged up the quality of his sound arrangements of late in
some of his soundtracks. Omkara is certainly one of my favs. Vishal
B's talent is extraorindary, like Rahman's.

he only talks about other MDs and his favorite soundtrack being from

human being like Rahman can celebrate the joys of others' success and
lament the losses of others who are in competition with him.

 in

scheduled to start some time in February-March'99. And they've also
been signed on for Shah Rukh Khan-Juhi Chawla's joint production,

back, the duo says, Every TV channel has our title song for Kuch
Kuch Hota Hai. Some months ago, Aati kya Khandala from Ghulam
 almost
became the national anthem. Apparently tourism in Khandala has gone
up by 30 per cent after the song. They assent to the fact that the
songs of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai picked up only after the film's
release. That's because the songs are situational. People had to
see the film for the music to grow on them, says Jatin. However
 we
knew we had a major hit on our hands, because at the premiere
itself, we got a standing ovation from the industry. Check with the
music distributors. Kuch Kuch albums have sold more than AR

  Dil Se.

Jatin-Lalit both see red when I point out that Karan Johar and his
buddies made a major contribution to the music of KKHH. News is
 that
the popular title track is actually a tune conceived by actor Jugal

 duo
retort. We admit that Jugal did contribute a little to the title
song but the entire tune is not his.

Evading the topic, they emphasise that they've delivered with the

The magic of Alai Payuthe with two additional gems in Banjar Hai nad
Naina Milaike makes this soundtrack one of the most complete and
meaty soundtracks by Rahman. Music was a hit, movie was a hit.
Rahman scores some of his best work for romantic films with good
directors. Hope he scores music for more romantic films in the future
with notable directors like Shaad Ali. And what an amazing sound
quality this soundtrack has! So crisp, clean, tremendous surround
sound effects. I am missing that type of sound from Rahman's most
recent efforts, where there is more of a crowded feel to the
arrangementsmissing the soft warm pads, crisp ghungrus, bells,
claps..where each sound would stand out and hit you. This was
brought to my attention fully by a good friend and another devoted
Rahman fan from this group.

[arr] How will 'Baazi Laga' be picturized, if at all?

2006-12-06 Thread Ajit
If you go to the main website of Guru, all the songs have photos next
to them except for Baazi Laga. Makes me wonder if Mani even included
this song in the film. If not, why is such an ordinary song in the
album in the first place?? Maybe how it's used in the film is a
surprisewho knows. But, if it's not in the film, it's one song
that could have been omitted or at least replaced with a better
composition IMO. But, hey, that's Rahman's and Mani's choice so we
have to respect that.

I'm really looking forward to this film. Hope Mani made an
interesting plot and tight story, not just a documentary style
film..which would turn away cine-goers. Hope for the best!

Glad to know the music is doing well.

[arr] How ARR captures the true essence and power of yesteryear's golden melodies

2006-12-06 Thread Ajit
The recent comments by Bappi stating that ARR is the only MD today
capable of carrying the torch of golden oldies of the past rings so
true and profound. I have such a profound respect and love for golden
oldie songs from the 50s and 60s and 70s. Today, there's lots of good
music out there from other MDs other than Rahman and many MDs in
recent years have re-captured the essence of true melody that was
evident in evegreen songs of the past (songs of Devdas, Parineeta,
etc.). However, no other MD has been able to capture that golden and
evergreen essence and re-create powerful melodies with rich sound as
well as Rahman (of course I'm biased.but it's the truth too).

So many folks from my parents' generation complain about how so much
of today's film music lacks deep melody. When I mention Rahman's
music, some of them simply haven't heard Rahman's evergreen songs due
to lack of film success and continue to think that he is just another
modern MD focused on beats and computers, etc. Others, who have heard
Rahman's music more broadly and carefully, agree and admit that many
of his melodies today have that evergreen and golden value, sorely
missing and lacking from music overall today when a hit today is
forgotten tomorrow.

Here is a list of Hindi songs by ARR (I am sure there are many Tamil
songs as well, but I'm not as familiar) that I feel capture that old
world evergreen, golden oldie essence. I am not including many
awesome songs that sound more modern in nature (but still have
tremendous melodic power, like Choti Si Asha) Feel free to agree or
disagree or to add more songs you think fit this category. Note how
most of these songs have a strong classical feel to them (strongly
raaga based) and many are from period films (which makes sense).

Songs of old world charm:

Bol Sajnni (Doli Saja Ke Rakhana)
Tu Hi Re (Bombay)
E Ajnabi (Dil Se)
Dheeme Dheeme (Zubeidaa)
So Gayein (Zubeidaa)
Hai Na (Zub)
Chodo More Baiyaan (Zub)
Pyar Sa Gaon (Zub)
Mehndi Hai Rachne Wali (Zub)
(yes, most of Zubeidaa falls in this category...mindblowing soundtrack)
Radha Kaise Na Chale (Lagaan)
O Paalanhare (Lagaan)
Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna (LOBS)
Jogiya Jogiya (LOBS)
Mujpe Toofan (Tehzeeb)
Naina Milaike (Saathhiya)
Pal Pal Bhaari (Swades)
Hum Hai Iss Pal Yahan (Kisna)
Desh Ki Mitti (Bose)
Ghoomparani (Bose)
Main Vari Vari (Mangal Pandey)
Ay Hairathe Ashiqui (Guru)

[arr] Special mention about Netaji's music

2006-12-02 Thread Ajit
I just listened to the entire soundtrack of Bose once again. One
word.majestic. Such a shame that this amazing piece of art never
got recognized. The beautiful songs of Desh Ki Mitti, Ghoomparani,
Ekla Chalo, Azaadi, Zikr..absolutely mindblowing in terms of
melody, depth, richness, arrangements, variety, passion, and soul.
And the background pieces, although symphonic and hollywoodish for the
most part, just shine of extravagant melodies and breathtaking
compositional elements.

Guys, ARR put a lot of work into this soundtracklot of passion...
and it just got wasted (except for his fans). I hope that someday he
gets the recognition he deserves for this marvelous piece of art.

Bose's music is simply one of the finest soundtracks ARR has ever
composed in all honesty.

[arr] RAHMAN - THE URBAN LEGEND

2006-11-30 Thread Ajit
Chinna Chinna Aasai' sang Minmini almost 15 years back, heralding a
new era in Indian music. The world sat up to take notice of this new
sound. A brand new star was born.

A R Rahman burst through like a breath of fresh air with Mani Ratnam's
Roja and changed the way Tamil and slowly rest of India's music
sounded. Ilaiyaraja had ruled the South till then as the undisputed
king among the composers. There was none to beat him, no one even to
come near him. If the `maestro' decided to do the score for your
movie, you can rest easy in the knowledge that you are going to have a
hit on your hands.

Raja's sounds were mostly grounded in a rural background – the
harmonium famously was at the composer's fingertips at any given time.
That doesn't mean that his songs were only of the typical folk song...
... variety. His music for Mani Ratnam's hit `Dalapathi' was
phenomenal. He has composed some of Tamil industry's most famous songs
– `Ilamai ennum poongatru', `Idhu oru pon maalai pozhudhu', `Raja raja
sozhan', to name a few.

Most of his contemporaries also went along the same route – M S
Viswanathan, Deva (who was more like a poor man's Raja), Gangai Amaran
etc. Ilaiyaraja did not really have any real competition – he ruled
alone and he ruled long. Till a 25 year old genius burst into the scene.

A slight difference of opinion between Mani Ratnam and his favourite
composer urged him to look for a composer elsewhere, latched onto the
young Rahman who was busy composing ad jingles and the rest, as they
say, is history. His choice of instruments, the arrangements he used,
the different tones and tunes he produced – everything was as
different from the prevalent music of the day as the proverbial chalk
is from cheese. The public lapped it up eagerly and were soon hungry
for more.

He followed Roja with some memorable songs from Thiruda Thiruda,
Gentleman, Puzhiya Mugam, May Maadam, Karuthamma, Duet,Indira, Bombay,
Rangeela and more recently, Taal, Lagaan, Boys Rang De Basanti and
Guru. He was the first ever music composer to win the coveted Rajat
Kamal Award at the National Film Awards for his debut effort. He has
gone on to win this award thrice more, for Minsaara Kanavu, Lagaan and
Kannathil Muthamittal - the most by any music director.

The awards he has won, the global recognition he has achieved, the
wide range of projects he's been a part of is too many to list. More
than anything, what he has single-handedly done is changed Indian
background music forever. Till he came onto the scene, filmi music was
primarily used to give the audience a break from the onscreen action.
With his advent, that changed completely – a movie's soundtrack became
as important as the movie itself. Cassette sales soared and became an
indication of how the movie would fare at the box-office.

Above all, Rahman introduced the Indian audience to a brand new, urban
sound. Till then, most of our music was of the folksy, villagey type
and the disco numbers all sounded a bit samey. Rahman blew that whole
scene out of the water and brought in new sounds – techno, electric,
big orchestra arrangements that sounded like nothing like what we had
heard before.

Soon, Rahman's assistants branched off on their own and took the new
Rahmanish sounds with them whilst the new ones on the horizon were
inspired by it and started emulating the same. Harris Jayaraj
(Minnale, Kaakha Kaakha, Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu), Praveen, Vidyasagar,
Bharadwaj, Devi Sri Prasad were all part of this new brigade. Though
all of them have gone on to make some great music scores, there is
none to touch ARR, none to match his attention to detail.

The consummate professional that he is, he clearly differentiates
between what is played on screen and what you slip into your CD
player, unlike the other music directors, whose screen music is no
different from the on they release on CD or tape. This makes his music
sound that much crisper when you listen to the audio whilst the video
has a special extra bit going for it. A classic example of this is his
recent Kummi Adi from Sillunu Oru Kaadal - while the CD version starts
with a big bang, in the movie there is a slow, folksy interlude before
the actual song.

Rahman also has a special music interlude for any crunch / special
situations in the plot. Oftentimes, this would be the chorus part of
the main romantic song of the movie. In the aforementioned movie, the
main part of the song Munbe Vaa was the background vocal for the
Gautham – Aishu wedding scene, the same song that they sing during
happier times.

These might seem insignificant but attention to little details like
this is what sets ARR apart. Devi Sri Prasad, in his latest hit
Bommarillu would have done better to have picked up these tips from
the master and utilised them in his song Laloo Darvaja. Whilst having
Jayasudha sing the Krishna bhajan-type number makes sense in the movie
and adds to the plot, it slows down the tempo of the song in the CD
and breaks up the whole

[arr] Nice review of Guru's music - well thought out and intelligent

2006-11-17 Thread Ajit
 Reviews GURU Music

[qalandari.blogspot.com]

Mani Ratnam's much discussed penchant for duos returns as drunken
parody in Ek lo Ek muft. This crazy bit of inebriated revelry is
especially welcome inasmuch as it shows (for the second time this
year, after Sillunu Oru Kadhal's Kummi Aadi) that the man's ear for
low brow rambunctiousness remains as sharp as ever. Bappi Lahiri's
enthusiastic neo-quaver is the perfect vehicle for this chattering
number that takes many a detour, bringing the basti into one's living
room, until one is reduced to gibbering idiotically ye-maw ye-maw
ye-maw ye-maw yh. And that's not a bad thing.

Speaking of Sillunu Oru Kadhal, if you thought Machakari was a fine
example of decadent globalized sound (and even if you didn't), Mayya
ramps up the intensity several notches. If Ek lo Ek muft was carousing
revelry, this one is drunken lewdness given form, oozing sex and
overripe fruit from every second. Full marks are... ... owed to Maryam
Toller and Chinmayee for demonstrating that mere vocals can in
themselves push the boundaries of the censor code. And there's a lot
more in this song: in particular, the tension between the come hither
vocals and Gulzar's stylish vocals makes an unforgettably stylish yet
unrestrained number -- and that's even before the song erupts toward
the end.

Imagine a cross between the Madan Mohan's classic Lata solo from Woh
Kaun Thi -- Lag ja gale ke phir yeh haseen raat ho na ho -- and A.R.
Rahman's own Azaadi from Bose, then add night and solitude, and you'll
get the haunting Jaage Hain. The best way to describe this song is as
a lori for adults, perhaps the most private song in this film that
appears to be another Ratnam take on power that is public in some
way, shape or form. Appropriately enough, the seclusion does not last,
as choral voices meld into the song after a point. Perhaps even the
dreams of those whose lives are lived in the public gaze are populated
by multitudes.

Is this the year for retro? For Baazi Laga (Paisa Chale) appears to be
Rahman's attempt at a 1980s Laxmikant Pyarelal or perhaps
Lawaaris-style number, and while it is very catchy it lacks the
nuanced richness I associate with Rahman's work. Not to mention that
its lyrics are far less cynical than the thematically similar Takay
Takay from Mangal Pandey, possibly a reflection of Javed Akhtar's own
Marxist inclinations to a certain extent, but which also make this
cheerfully hustling and bustling song a fitting anthem to an urban
India that is increasingly optimistic and enthusiastic about commerce.

Barso Re is a saawan song, once a staple of Hindi films; although my
first impressions of this song are not especially favorable, it is
elevated from mere sweetness by Rahman's use of an urgent -- and
rousing -- vocal refrain that insists upon the listener's attention. I
doubt this will ever be a great Rahman number in my estimation,
although I do expect it to grow on me with time, as Sandha Kozhi/Kabhi
Neem Neem from Aayitha Ezhuthu/Yuva did.

Rahman's passion for the neo-qawwali love song remains undimmed, as
Tere Bina shows: the chorus is smoother, less edgy than Bombay's
Kannalane/Kehna hi kya or Alai Payuthey's Sneghidane (indeed the song
is shot where Bombay's was), but Chinmayee's voice is throatier,
earthier than anything Chitra managed (or was aiming for) in
Kannalane/Kehna hi kya. Unquestionably, Rahman stresses the repetitive
aspect of the qawwali in this song rather than the virtuosity he has
explored in qawwali-ish songs in the past, and the result is less
energetic and more decorous, yet heartfelt and (for me, I predict)
ultimately addictive.

Ae Hairat-e-Aashiq is the most conventional song in the album, a
reminder (if any were needed after Khamoshiyan Gungunaane Lageen from
One 2 ka 4 and Sunta hai mera Khuda or Qismet se tum humko mile ho
from Pukaar) that Rahman's command over the traditional Hindi film
duet is second to none among his peers. A classic love song by
Hariharan and Alka Yagnik, this is for me musically the least
surprising song here, although its evergreen freshness ensures that it
will age well, and with a wide audience.

[arr] Guru impressions and my honest thoughts on Rahman

2006-11-17 Thread Ajit
Heard the music of Guru and I am both spellbound in parts and
disappointed in other parts. Quite a contrast of feelings to go
through within one soundtrack. As a passionate Rahman fan myself and
knowing what an impact Rahman's music has had in the past with Mani's
direction, I have been anticipating this day of release of Guru's
music when it was first announced.

Please understand that Rahman is almost like my own Guru. As a
keyboard player myself, I look up to him not only as a musician, but
as a human being, a man of humility, grace, passion, compassion, and
spirituality. Please take what I am about to say as something that is
painful to admit even to myself.

First of all, with Guru, 3 tracks are spellbinding, magical, classics,
whatever you call it - Tere Bina, Ay Hairathe, and Jaage Hain. Two
tracks to me are strictly ok to good - Barso Re and Mayya, and two
tracks - well, I can't believe these two songs are on a Mani-Rahman
soundtrack - Baazi Laga and Ek Muft (although Ek Muft will probably
grow on me, esp once I see how it is picturized.

A very good friend of mine who is a member of this group and who
wishes to remain anonymous shared some observations with me, which I
was too afraid to admit to myself at first. Please understand first
that I am not one of those who wants another Dil Se or Taal. I am for
one glad that Rahman likes to move in new directions and set trends.
But, of late, he has been on another trend too, which does not rub
well on me. Rahman is going against the grain of his natural style.
He likes to experiment in new directions and I love that about Rahman,
but the magical spontaneity and natural ease of composing has been
missing. It's almost as if Rahman is changing his entire mentality
of composing on purpose for some reason, even though the effort is
always there and brilliance is there in flashes. In fact, his
compositions seem a lot more effortful of late and that slick and
brilliant spontaneity is not as evident and even absent a lot more.
One person made a comment on another board saying that today, Rahman
seems to be trying too hard.

One observation is that in recent Rahman soundtracks, there is overall
a relative lack of arrangement depth and elaborative musicianship that
characterized his earlier works. The bells and whistles are not quite
there, and frankly, his arrangements in many of his recent soundtracks
have sounded muddy. Those crisp simple arrangements with ethnic
beats and simple melodies with lush strings and softer mid tones are
lacking more, replaced by technoish rhythms with a muddled sounding
accompaniment section. I have also noticed less use of true acoustic
instruments and a de-emphasis on expansive musical interludes,
replaced by only chords or one line improvizations (exception -
Swades). I believe that Rahman has not lost anything, and the proof
is in many stand out songs in recent soundtracks like the ones just
mentioned in Guru, RDB, MP, and his consistent brilliance in Swades
and Bose (two exceptions to my point). His BGMs are also amazing.

Take Guru for example. I can understand that songs like Baazi Laga nd
Ek Muft are situational numbers and they probably suit the director's
scenes well. But, they sound so ordinary, as if any other MD's
compositions. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I really feel that way!
Baazi Laga is frankly skippable! And listen to Barso Re, it's catchy,
but it just sounds so plain jane. Even with situational numbers,
Rahman can do so much better. Why is he going against his natural
grain of brilliance and elaborative musicianship and lush arrangements
in some songs, but not in others? This gives a soundtrack a stark
inconsistency that is confusing and also limits its potential. Once
again, in previous soundtracks, each and every song would feature his
brilliance, and thus, his soundtracks became commercial blockbusters.
When was the last time a Rahman soundtrack was a true pan India
stand alone blockbuster? Been a while, hasn't it? RDB, for instance,
was a hit musically, but only because the movie was a huge hit. Yes,
the songs were good, even great at times, but not mindblowing. And I
don't fault Rahman entirely either for recent lack of commercial
success relative to his own success in the past. In recent years,
piracy has put a huge dent in commercial potential of musical products
too.

Please don't misunderstand me. My comments are only relative to
Rahman's own previous standards and successes. He is no ordinary MD as
we know. His genius is unbound and I expect a lot from him in each
and every track. When I listen to a song like Ey Hairathe, tears come
to my eyes because there is the true Rahman...the true and
beautiful and powerful Rahman and magic and brilliance that I love and
adore and I so badly miss in a consistent way.

I surrender to the possiblity that it's my expectations that are at
fault too. But, I sincerely believe in my heart that Rahman for some
reason

[arr] RDB BGM - my thoughts

2006-04-04 Thread Ajit
Thanks a lot AJ. Your efforts are really appreciated. Where else
could we get this??? Nowhere but here and thanks to members like
you, we are privaleged.

However, I agree with Vishwsant that this score did not impress me a
whole lot. There are bits and pieces in this score that are just
brilliant, but overall, it's a bit too hollywoodish. Swades' BGM was
more spiritual and more Indian sounding, as well as more diverse.
There is a lack of ethnic flavor in this score. But, this is just an
observation of the score by itself. Without a doubt, with the movie,
this score is absolutely perfect and enhances each situation in the
movie incredibly..the best BGM score since Swades.

Thanks a ton AJ. As always perfect work!

But about the score, I heard all the pieces and IMHO it is not
half as good as Swades's score. Maybe it blends with the movie very
well, but when hearing audio only, no competition with Swades's
score! Nope

BTW, Later part of The Kakori Robbery reminds me so much of
Thiruda Thiruda theme music!

 AJ [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
   Hey,
Sorry for being away for such a long time but lots of projects
were happening to me in the last months.
But anyway, I got my RDB DVD last week and I realized again that
ARR's contribution in the movie is absolutely mindblowing! His music
plays an important and integral part of the film and without it
wouldn't have the impact we all had watching this piece of
masterwork. This underlines again what I believe that ARR is a
director's composer or probably even more than that. In this case I
guess that he might even has topped Rakesh Om Prakash's visions of
music for RDB. In my eyes it has even topped ARR's score in Swades!

[arr] My suspicions about boxofficeindia.com

2006-04-03 Thread Ajit
I was checking www.boxofficeindia.com's website about how the music
sales for RDB are doing. If you look at the list of sales figures for
March, they only report the first three and then end there. Last
month, they only reported the first two. I get the feeling that they
stop just short of showing RDB's music sales. Under regional leaders,
for March, they showed RDB's music rank to be 2 in the North, 3 in the
West and East, and 1 in the South, but don't show the numbers. Why
they don't show RDB's sales figures in numbers, which is probably quite
high, is quite suspicious. I've always had a gut feeling that the guys
on that site are not fans of Rahman, and in fact may be biased against
Rahman. Or, maybe I'm just being paranoid.?

They show the movie to be doing superb business, and are not shy to
show the numbers there.

If anyone has any info about RDB's music sales in figures, please refer
me to it. Thanks.

[arr] Bhansali should have gone with ARR for Saanwariya

2006-03-27 Thread Ajit
Sanjay Leela Bhansali as a director has a solid sense of music and his
upcoming film Saanwariya about innocent love with child actors would
have been a great film for ARR to work with a genius like Bhansali to
compose in a new direction. I wish Bhansali chose ARR instead of
Monty, although I respect Monty's work in Black a lot.

It's a matter of time, hopefully, before ARR and Bhansali join forces,
but I think it should come sooner than later. I feel that when they do
combine their genius talents, nothing short of mindblowing will be the
result. Of course, ARR should feel inspired enough as well to choose a
film with Bhansali. This almost happened with Bajirao Mastani, but
that is still up in the air.

Re: [arr] Piya Hoo...Water

2006-03-26 Thread Ajit
I strongly disagree with your views. There are so many beautiful ARR
songs that are pleasing and full of melody. He is a chameleon
composer, crossing boundaries, excelling at originality, able to wear
any hat, and yet, have a mark and quality that is truly classy and
powerful.

Listen to the majority of his works before judging.

but for instance TALL was a good album... but honestly it does not
really please audience... he has just the qualification nothing more

Take alook at Nadeem Shravan's musics YOu will understand what
melody is and see how does it please you.

I did not want to offend anyone or be sarcastic to his music or

[arr] Looking back at Kuch Kuch Hota Hai vs. Dil Se

2006-03-23 Thread Ajit
It was fun to go back to see the very first messages of this group,
started in early Jan 1999. At that time, when I was not yet a member
of this group, people here were complaining about Jatin Lalit's
arrogance and how the music of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was not as good as
Dil Se, despite it being so popular.

Well, looks like over time, Dil Se's music has a much more permanent
place among music lovers alike!

[arr] Question about ARR's hand gesture in Talk Asia show

2006-03-20 Thread Ajit
As I was finally able to watch the Talk Asia show, I noticed during the
interview when Rahman was talking about his father and a couple of
other serious topics, he put his right hand on his left shoulder and
looked down a bit for a few seconds. Does anyone know if this is
something religiously related or just something random that he did?
Please forgive my ignorance if I am not able to interpret this, but I
was just curious.

[arr] Finally saw RDB....incredible movie with mindblowing BGM

2006-02-20 Thread Ajit
Congrats to the whole RDB team. What a powerful movie. Great in every
department. A landmark movie in Hindi cinema. So glad it's a superhit
in India.

And of course, our Boss. Kya Baat Hai Bhai My God, what
mindblowing BGMs by Rahmanji. Simply incredible..the music takes
on a plot of its own.a story of its own, weaving seamlessly with
the narrative and direction of the film and so beautifully amplifying
and the base emotions and unsaid dynamics. Rahman has truly worked
hard on this BGM and I am so proud of him and happy that he is getting
praised left and right for this music and that the movie is extremely
popular. Another huge feather in his cap and I can't wait to possibly
get a BGM recording of this movie in the future by someone generous
enough.

Hats off, we bow down to you Rahmanji. Keep going..keep going
higher and higher and higher and higher

YOU ROCK!!

[arr] Re: 'Rang De Basanti' audio sales pickup

2006-02-01 Thread Ajit
I argue that if RDB music was not up to Rahman's standards whatever
that means, then Rahman would not have been the MD. See what I'm
getting at? If the music of RDB falls short of your expectations,
that I can understand. If it's not the type of music you enjoy, I
can certainly understand that. But, not up to Rahman's standards? I
agree that it's not Rahman's best score, but if the music was not up
to Rahman's own satisfaction, I don't think he would be very happy.
I do get the sense that Rahmanji is quite satisfied with RDB's music,
given the film and the type of music demanded by the director to suit
the film.

Never forget that Rahman is a progressive MD..he likes to
experiment and try new directions.

'Rang De Basanti' audio sales pickup IndiaGlitz
  [Wednesday, February 01, 2006]

This has happened in the past and this is happening again. So
many
 times
it has been seen that audio sales for a movie picks up in a big
way
after the movie's release, especially if the movie has been
 appreciated.

Same has happened with A.R.Rehman's 'Rang De Basanti' for which
 audio is
now selling like hot cakes, a week into the movie hitting the
 marquee.
Rehman's music was always situational and the way all 8-9 tracks
 were
blended into the movie's screenplay, it was bound to mesmerize the
  audience in a big way.

Result is that today music lovers are showing a renewed interest
 in the
film's music due to a wide range of songs in it.

  Regards,

  Shah Navas

Re: [arr] I am sick of these blogs

2006-01-30 Thread Ajit
In defense of Gopal, I am loving reading these blogs and I have
noticed many blogs criticizing RDB as well. I see nothing wrong with
posting these blogs as they provide a sampling perspective of the
movie from folks.

Promoting an ARR movie is acceptable to a certain degree. I see that
almost all blogs have only positive comments. Now that isn't real is
it? It looks more of a information manipulation.

My thoughts (and perhaps mine alone) are that there are other specific
forums providing infrastructure for film reviews and ours is not one

[arr] ARR getting lots of praise......makes me happy

2006-01-28 Thread Ajit
If you look at most of the reviews, apart from some monkeys like Taran
Adarsh (who are entitled to their own opinion), ARR is lauded heavily
for the music score. Although most songs are played up to one stanza
or relegated to background, it appears that music has impressed many
and I am so happy for ARR about this. Also happy to read that the
songs have hit number 1 on many countdown charts

Hats off to the maestro.well deserving.and it's good to see an
ARR film and soundtrack promoted so well after a long time and being
appreciated almost universally.

[arr] Is this a big threat to RDB success?

2006-01-28 Thread Ajit
New Controversy Threatens ´Rang De Basanti´

While the 32 crore Aamir Khan starrer 'Rang De Basanti' has opened to
an excellent city and multiplexes response ,after overcoming two major
(by now well known) controversies , a third one is round the corner .
No , we are not talking about the two day old pirated CD seizure at
Bombay's airport , something that the media has been highlighting on
and on .

According to sources , an objectionable slogan on the posters of the
movie is drawing the wrath of the sikh community . Both , the 'SGPC'
('Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee' )and the 'Jathedar' of the
'Shri Damdama Sahib Nandgarh' have reacted strongly to it .

While the posters show Aamir Khan on a horseback , the other side has
the lead actors of the movie embracing each other . However, the sikh
organisation have taken exception to what is written in Hindi and
Punjabi (in bold letters)at the lower side of the poster - Raaj
Karega Khalsa .

'SGPC' media secretary G.S. Bedi and Jathedaar of the 'Shri Damdama
Sahib Nandgarh ' (Talwandi ), Balwant Singh have called it a matter of
great concern and called for a ban on 'Rang De Basanti' as it ammounts
to an isult of the entire sikh community . What must be kept in mind
is that the same organisations were successful in getting Sunny Deol's
'Jo Bole So Nihal ' banned .

[arr] Shyam Rang Bhar Do from Water = Anti Depressant

2006-01-16 Thread Ajit
The emotional power of Rahman's music once again shines. This song is
extremely uplifting.as if a veil is removed from one's face and
light is seen. Love the ethnic folk flavor of this song of the
celebration of Holi.of colors. I so much appreciate how Rahman has
added the violin touches in the background to accentuate the feelings
of purity, joy, spirit. The beats are extremely catchy and the singing
is just top notch. Wish more of the Indian public could hear this
song...it would be a chartbuster for sure.

The flip song of that soundtrack is Piya Ho.intense,
somber..poignant...communicating pain.but equally as powerful in a
different emotion.

   A.R. Rahman.

Yes, we've all heard of him and most of us have heard his music.
   He's been
called The Mozart of Madras. He's the long wavy haired Tamilian
  music
director genius from Chennai who is associated with movie
  soundtracks
   like
Taal, Rangeela, Lagaan, Iruvar, Thiruda Thiruda, Dil Se, Roja
   Yup, you
know him.the shy and quiet one. Yes, he is the one who
  prefers to
compose music at night, requiring singers and other artists to
  adjust
   their
routines to accomodate his recording schedule, and the one who is
   notorious
for taking his own time composing, much to the impatience of
  the film
wallahs of Mumbai and Chennai. He is the most expensive music
  director.
He has been labeled repetitive by his critics, focusing too much on
   rhythm
and fusion. Some accuse him of tainting the traditional North
  Indian
style of film music with his brand of fusion experimentation,
  imbuing
Western and South Indian musical blends. Oh, and let's not forget
  the
   other
outdated and absurd criticism of Woh synthesizer aur

What else is known about A.R. Rahman?

He has been awarded with the Padmashree, one of the most

Winning countless number of filmfare, national, technical, and
  other
regional awards and accolades, he has been showered with praise by
  Lata
Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Amitabh Bacchan,
   President
Abdul Kalam (for whose poem he has composed music) and many other
  top
artists and performers. He has single handedly revolutionized the
   face of
Indian film music from the 1990s to today, begining with his debut
soundtrack for Roja in 1992 (first in Tamil). He somehow was
  able to

  India,
commercially selling more than Britney Spears and Madonna

music has been recognized internationally, gathering the attention

[arr] My writeup should go no further than this group

2006-01-15 Thread Ajit
I have been informed from one of ARR's close associates that ARR will
not like it if my writeup is published in a magazine or newspaper, and
hence, this will be as far as it goes. Thanks for everyone's
feedback. If ARR reads my writeup in this group and feels that I have
revealed too much, I apologize profusely and meant only good intentions.

Thanks.

Re: [arr] Anyone want to laugh?

2006-01-12 Thread Ajit
Your points are well taken and I too am not a fan of rap in Hindi
songs, esp. with this Blaaze fellow. But, this guy asserts that his
4 points are the reasons that ARR's soundtracks are not selling well,
which is a very narrow minded, arrogant, and limiting view. This I
found ridiculous. Whether you agree with his points or not is one
thing, but to for him to say that ARR should follow his advice, which
is what he mentioned afterwards, is pretty hilarious.

  1) He has to give more time to create melodious
  music instread of this
rap and western tren. We want Jiya Jale, Kehna Hai
  Kya over Khalbali
  type of songs.
Absolutely. I am sick of hearing blaze or someone
rapping over the songs. Paatshaala and Khalbali and
songs like that really pull it down. Even the title
song is a disappointment. When Daler Mehendi harped on
and on about how he sang the entire song in 5 minutes,
our suspicions should have been raised. The sad part
is that Rahman himself seems to have taken just
another 5 minutes to create the magic of the song
after he has the singers recorded. The melody number
Tum Bin Bataye has some promising instrumentation but
seems too cliched and tries too hard to be a melody
number. I like the organ which sounds like a chorus
chanting during the verses, but the rest of the song
 is just meh.

  2) He has to take well know renowned singers to make
  his songs more
meaningfull. He has some vaugue thinking that only
  music directors are
powerfull and singers are non entity. Both md and
  singers have
contribution to make. When you take unknown singers
  you are actually
letting people not to buy your albums.
I wouldn't agree with this. The more reknown singers
in this album are Daler Mehendi and Lata Mangeshkar
and they were the weakest singers on the album. The
newer voices are really better. And none of them tried
to use an anglisized accent like Shaan in his
Mohabbat hai Mirchi song. I just cant stand that.

  3) He has to tell his lyricists to write something
  which people can
understand not something like Pathshala or Dakka
  laga bukka.
I felt the same thing. The lyrics of Paatshaala
sounded too much like those badly dubbed songs from
his Prabhu Deva era. If the album's claim to the
charts is this song, I really dont have much hope for
it's success. But Koon Chala and even the lyrics of
the title song are pretty neat. And Lalkaar has good
lyrics too. It's just the supposedly chartbusters like
Paatshaala that have cheesy, if not enjoyable, lyrics.

  4) Dont do period films. He is himself saying he is
  done with it but
  again taking assignments for it.
Well, besides Akbar Jodha and possibly Buddha, I cant
think of any other period films he is signed up for.
Maybe the mirage that is Mahabharatha. But seriously
it doesn't make a difference. He can really create
great period music like Iruvar and 1947. Right now,
it's his contemparary work that seems to be suffering,
 like RDB and Anbae Aayuriye.

He has to correct the above otherwise none of his
  album going to reach
the top 10. Except Swades and Yuva none of the last
  9 albums even
reached 5 lakhs unit sell. For ARR album usually it
  picks in West and
South. But now West has also rejected it.
I really hope the JoK rocks. I dont have much hope
with Shivaji, cos though Shankar albums become hits
(which, I agree, Rahman really needs badly), he seems
to get the worst out of his music directors. Indian,
Jeans and Mudalvan were really weak Rahman albums with
Boys just rising a little above these. And Aniyan is
possibly Harris Jayaraj's worst album. Pity, cos he is
 amazing too.

So, at the risk of not being highly regarded with this
group, I have to agree with this guy on a couple of
 points.

Do many of you have or don't have the soundtrack? I know it's not for

already discussed somewhat when it was leaked out back in Oct. Maybe I

[arr] RDB - amazing how each song has been declared a favorite

2006-01-12 Thread Ajit
As I go around the net, gauging people's reactions to RDB's music,
reading reviews, impressions, reading blogs (thanks to Gops!), I am
just wonderstruck how each and every song from RDB has been declared
a favorite by more than a handful of people. Whether it's the title
song being seen as the best, or Paathshaala, or Rubaru, or Khalbali,
or Lukka Chuppi, etc. etc., almost every song is a favorite of
someone's. I think that says a lot about this very diverse and fresh
soundtrack. The only track not declared a fav is Lalkaar, but that's
not really a song. Despite sales being sluggish in certain key
areas, I am really struck by the positive responses by many out there
to this music. The negative responses are there too, but far, far
outnumbered by positive reviews. I would say close to 95% of the
reactions I am guaging from online users are overwhelmingly positive.

I hope this overall positive reaction and good reactions to the movie
do translate into higher sales, but I am noticing that soundtracks
which appeal to urban folks generally don't sell well in interior
regions. It's just amazing how Rahman reigns in such a response,
regardless of sales.

Interestingly, I am getting to like the song Khalbali more. I am
reading more and more folks out there declaring this song to be their
favorites andin some ways, I can see why. I didn't like the song at
all when I first heard it, but it's pretty infectious.

Hats off to ARR for an uplifting and fresh soundtrack that is putting
joy into many people's hearts and making us simply rock. The album
does deserve it's share of criticisms about absence of Rahman's usual
thick layering and other points, but I have not seen such an
overwhelmingly positive reaction to a soundtrack in a long time.

[arr] Nice review of RDB music

2006-01-12 Thread Ajit
Found this review on the net (mouthshut.com) and thought it was well
written. And by the way, out of the 24 reviews on mouthshut, almost
everyone has given the music 4 or 5 stars out of 5.
_
When all else fails and has no meaning or comfort, there remains
music.

If you are looking for any new fresh music, which can take you out
from regular stressful life, listen to this album. Music washes away
from the soul the dust of everyday life and the songs and music of
this album proves this definition of music. I'll recommend this album
to all those who are looking for some relax and fun from stressed
mind.

Rang De Basanti: Few songs are meant to fill your heart with a new
zeal (Kuchh gane apmein josh bhar dete hain). This song is definitely
one of those songs. Start from beginning till the end you will feel
excited and energized. It's a blunt brag, where soloist urges to fill
every aspect of his life with momentous colors. Listen to these lines
carefully sapnen rang de, apne rang de, khushiyaan rang de, gam bhi
rang de, naslen rang de, faslein rang de, rang de dhadkan, rang de
sargam, aur mohe tuu rang de basanti yaara.

ding ding ding ding ding ding ding
ding ding ding ding ding
thodisi dhuul meri dharti ki mere watan ki
thodisi Khushbuu baurai se mast pavan ki
thodisi dhondhane waali dhak-dhak dhak-dhak dhak-dhak saansein
jin mein ho junoon junoon voh boonde laal lahuu ki
yeh sab tuu mila mila le phir rang tuu khila khila le
aur mohe tuu rang de basanti yaara
mohe tuu rang de basanti
mohe mohe tuu rang de basanti
oh mohe rang de basanti basanti rang de basanti

 - Daler Mehendi

Luka Chuppi: It's a song, which has a consequential conversation
between a mother and a son. Generation gap always prevents you to
share some of your deeds with your elders. This song beautifully
illustrates that. Lataji has given her voice for mother and
A.R.Rahman for son.

Luka Chuppi bahut huyi saamne aa ja naa
Kahan kahan dhoondha tujhe
thak gayi hai ab teri maa

Aaja saanjh hui mujhe teri fikar
Dhundhla gayi dekh meri nazar aa ja na

   - Lata Mangeshkar,
A.R.Rahman

Lalkar: It's a patriotic shouting and not a typical song. Amir Khan
usually sang unusual songs and this also falls in same category.
People who like to listen nationalistic theme will definitely like
this.

hai liye hathiyaar dushman taak mein baitha udhar
aur hum taiyyaar hain seena liye apna idhar
khoon se khelenge holi gar vatan muskhil mein hai
sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

   - Amir Khan

khalbali hai khalbali: It's a slow but rocking song, which gives a
different feeling. Beats are typical A.R.Rahman beats. It's a chorus
song.

khalbali hai khalbali, hai khalbali
khalbali hai khalbali, hai khalbali
(shola shola balkhaye
dariya dariya lehraye
zarra zarra tharraye
hai khalbali)
khalbali hai khalbali, hai khalbali

khalbali hai khalbali, hai khalbali
khalbali hai khalbali, hai khalbali

hone hone de nasha khone khone ko hai kya
ek saans mein pee ja zara zindagi chadha
hai yeh toh ek jashan tu thirakne de kadam
abhi saanson mein hai dam abhi chalne de sitam

   - A R REHMAN, ASLAM,
NACIM

Roobaroo: One fine day you woke up in the morning and realize that
some of your dreams come true. These dreams were very important and
crucial for you. You feel excited and a sense of self-obsession also
approaches your mind. This song exactly portrays the same feeling.

aye saala
abhi abhi huaa yaqeen ki aag hai mujh mein kahi
hui subaah main chal gaya
suraj ko main nigal gaya
ruu-ba-ruu roshni heyy

jo gumshuda-sa khwaab tha
voh mil gaya voh khil gaya
uulon hathaa pighal gaya
kichhaa kichhaa machal gaya
sitaar mein badal gaya
ruu-ba-ruu roshni heyy

   - A R REHMAN, NARESH IYER

Apni Toh Pathshala: A fun filled, thrilling, exciting and interesting
song, which will definitely drag your feet towards dance floor. It's
a real youthful song, which has everything to celebrate and provoke a
young life. A life which has no tension, no stress, no confusion,
just masti hi masti. Listen to these lines talli hoke girne se
samjhi hamne gravity, ishq ka practical kiya tab aayi clearity. This
song is my favorite song from this album.

na koi padhne wala na koi sikhne wala
apni toh paathshala masti ki paathshala

chehare ki kitaabein hain ham woh padhne aate hai
yeh surat teri meri mobile library
yaaron ki equation hain love multiplication hain
jisne dil ko jeeta hain
woh alpha hain deeta hain

  - NARESH IYER, MOHAMED ASLAM

Khoon Chala: When you feel to do something. You empower your inner
strength, you motivate yourself. This song depicts that inner call.
It has a very slow rather say ignorable music.

Gops, I hope you can post this. I just got this message on another

Audio Review : Water - Beyond all boundaries

 Printer friendly page

 Producer: David Hamilton
 Director: Deepa Mehta
Cast: John Abraham, Lisa Ray, Seema Biswas, Kulbhushan Kharbanda,
Waheeda Rehman, Raghuvir Yadav, Vinay Pathak, Rishma Malik
 Music: Rahman A R
 Singers: Sukhwinder Singh

Deepa Mehta's `Water' has been in the news since it's inception and
production days, when the Hindu purist revolted against banning the
film in India due to its controversial theme. The film then went
to
Sri Lanka to complete the shoot secretively and made to the 30th
annual Toronto International Film Festival where it was showered
with
accolades. This is the third film completing the trilogy after
`Fire'
and `Earth'. The film is produced by David Hamilton and has John
Abraham, Lisa Ray, Seema Biswas, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Waheeda
Rehman, Raghuvir Yadav and Baby Sarala playing the major roles.
A.R.
Rehman who has composed the music of other two films as well scores
 the music.

An ecstatic classical track `Aayo Re Sakhi' by Sukhwinder Singh
begins at the initial of the soundtrack. With a mellow and lucid
pace, amid only some musical instruments the track turns out to be
a
very soothing one. Delicate in being, you've to devote all your
concentration as you hear the song. The lyrics basically revolve
around love, pleasure, celebration and liberty that form the base
of
 the film.

Enlightening your soul another song with strong classical base and
very little music comes up in succession to the first number.
Orbiting around Radha-Krishan theme, `Bangri Marorii' enlivens the
feel of the film through the music. Built for the musical elites,
the
track is more of a recitation and once again fits fine to create
the
 enigma in the film.

Like the former two tracks the next song also takes the same route
making it well evident the kind of music that has been integrated
for
the purpose. `Naina Neer Bahai' talks about the Meera-Krishna
relation and once again follows the somber style. With a classical
and semi-classical music base, fabulous words, the song proves
better
than the two in terms of compositions. It's just amazing and a
 classic piece.

`Piya Ho' also moves in the same pace and is more of a leisure and
pleasure track with Sukhwinder Singh handling the singing reins.

The next track of the album `Sham Rang Mei' for the first time in
the
album brings around a cheerful and festive spirit. Beautiful
celebration song in terms of singing, lyrics and composition. A
very
original and unconventional number that'll make you fall for it
 instantly.

The bhajan `Vaishnava Jana To' ends the album. This is a popular
song
that every Indian is accustomed to.

Words fall short in crediting Rehman for the kind of music he has
scored for this album. He has taken full liberty to compose the
choicest song, sans commercial ingredients making it perfect for a
film with such an offbeat theme. With some of the most original,
innovative and unique compositions, Rehman adds another feather to
his cap as a musical intellect. The album is beyond all boundaries!

The search is more important than the destination.

[arr] Let's look on the bright side......

2006-01-09 Thread Ajit
ARR's recent sales figures with his soundtracks can be debated
repeatedly about how significant, etc. One thing is for sure,
however, sales figures don't talk about his originality and his
ability to quiety set trends, plant new seeds of ideas and styles,
and slowly but surely keep himself distinct and special as an MD. His
name associated with international projects garner him the status and
prestige he deserves, while in India, how somehow manages to be seen
as the best, regardless of sales.

I am convinced that ARR is in no danger of burnout nor his name nor
his music becoming a frenzied fashion that usually is very short
lived. Do I feel that there is room for him to connect with the
masses more? Yes, most definitely. However, I think we will all
discover that his soundtracks like Water, Bose, Swades, Meenaxi, RDB,
regardless of sales numbers, will retain a very long life in the
hearts of many of us and in the hearts of many to come. That is the
beauty of it. Yes, it will help for his music to be more immediately
recognized and to achieve a certain level of popularity, but I
guarantee you that the appeal that his most scintiillating
soundtracks offer will be imbued with longevity and nostalgia. I am
confident that music lovers in the future will regard these and many
other soundtracks of his to be among the finest ever in Hindi cinema.

Whoever came up with this line I think knows what I'm trying to
explain..ARR - Let it Grow

[arr] Aayo Re (aka Chan Chan) from Water #6 on PB's most requested songs!

I was in some ways surprised to see that this song was the sixth most
requested song of the week on PB's website, which usually caters to the
more commercial populace. This song is extremely mindblowing, but it's
good to know that it's striking a chord with a lot of folks. Also, the
movie Water was the most recommended movie of the week last week.

Deepa Mehta's `Water' has been in the news since it's inception and
production days, when the Hindu purist revolted against banning the
film in India due to its controversial theme. The film then went to
Sri Lanka to complete the shoot secretively and made to the 30th
annual Toronto International Film Festival where it was showered with
accolades. This is the third film completing the trilogy after `Fire'
and `Earth'.

With a mellow and lucid
pace, amid only some musical instruments the track turns out to be a
very soothing one. Delicate in being, you've to devote all your
concentration as you hear the song. The lyrics basically revolve
around love, pleasure, celebration and liberty that form the base of
the film.

Enlightening your soul another song with strong classical base and
very little music comes up in succession to the first number.
Orbiting around Radha-Krishan theme, `Bangri Marorii' enlivens the
feel of the film through the music. Built for the musical elites, the
track is more of a recitation and once again fits fine to create the
enigma in the film.

Like the former two tracks the next song also takes the same route
making it well evident the kind of music that has been integrated for
the purpose. `Naina Neer Bahai' talks about the Meera-Krishna
relation and once again follows the somber style. With a classical
and semi-classical music base, fabulous words, the song proves better
than the two in terms of compositions. It's just amazing and a
classic piece.

`Piya Ho' also moves in the same pace and is more of a leisure and
pleasure track with Sukhwinder Singh handling the singing reins.

The next track of the album `Sham Rang Mei' for the first time in the
album brings around a cheerful and festive spirit. Beautiful
celebration song in terms of singing, lyrics and composition. A very
original and unconventional number that'll make you fall for it
instantly.

The bhajan `Vaishnava Jana To' ends the album. This is a popular song
that every Indian is accustomed to.
