Well Guyz, Let's say one in every 100 people may not have liked the movie. But the other 99 did :P Now u know I was just wondering while watchin the movie, the Anbil Avan song is the end of the story! If it was this wud hav been just another love story. The reason y the movie connected in such a wide way with the audience was the Climax! And that is basically the reason y some ppl didnt like the movie ;) They thot the movie was over when the Anbil Avan song was playin and were leavin the theatre! But little did they know that the movie started after it! Music is a gem even b4 watchin the movie. But now after watchin the movie, everytime any song plays in my car, it reminds me truly of the scene. Who wud have thot Omana Penne last bits were synchronous with Karthik Jessy comin closer! Who wud have thot the Cello bit in Kannukul Kannai wud play a major part in definin the mood between Karthik Jessy! Genius! Love the music.. Loved the movie.. Dear Family.. :) Just wanted to share an interesting thought that crossed my mind today.. ARR Sachin have kinda always scaled peaks in a similar graph.. Here's yet another illustration below.. We never required an OSCAR or a GRAMMY to underline Padma Bhushan Rahman's contribution towards music. But the Double Oscar (first by an Indian) followed by a Double Grammy (in the same year as the Oscars) stregthens an opinion! We never required a Double Century in an ODI by Sachin to realize his contribution towards sports. But the 200 (first by a man on the planet) again strengthens an opinion! The opinion that both these gentlemen are long overdue for the BHARAT RATNA!! Nope to my understanding he's never won a Best Singer's award. He rarely gets nominated too for the same.. And that's an irony as most of the songs he has sung has arguably been amongst the best tracks in that particular album. This is indeed great news. Padma Vibhushan is the 2nd highest Civilian Award ranking just below Bharat Ratna and above the Padma Bhushan. Lets take it a step at a time. Insha Allah, Padma Vibhushan this tym and who knows the Bharat Ratna in the future. Bharat Ratna was last awarded in 2008 to Bhimsen Joshi after a gap of 7 years. I'm not a professional commentator nor do I have a profound knowledge as far as music is concerned, thus kindly pardon me if there's any inaccuracy or mistake in the expressions and words used below. 1. Omana Penne Omana Penne starts on a blissful tune coupled with the soothing voice of Benny Dayal. I've always preferred Benny in soft melodies rather than in fast beats or folk numbers. And as expected, Benny has done a wonderful job here. The first saranam was given an under-water- singing effect which reminds me of Blue, nevertheless the similarities ends there. The Kerala portion on the other hand, has a heavenly rhythm which leaves you asking for more. It's always a privilege to hear ARR's usage of ethnic music, even if it's only for a few seconds and he has done an excellent job here as well. And needless to say, Kalyani Menon was the perfect choice for this. On a further note, the nadaswaram used throughout the song was just mind blowing. Initially I had my doubts if the real nadaswaram was used for this particular number nevertheless clarifications given by fellow friends and a quick check with ARR's official website cleared my doubts. Kudos to ARR and Natarajan for churning out an essentially ethnic and yet modern tune. Omana Penne is definitely here to stay!  2. Anbil Avan The techno sound at the prelude seems to have traces of Santhipoma of Enaku 20 Unaku 18. To tell the truth, I didn't find this song to be particularly astounding at first. However, repeated hearing has made me to change my mind. Trust me, this song is highly addictive. Devan did a great job, needless to say. I couldn't think of any other singer who would have given the song the same level of energy that Devan accomplishes. Nevertheless, I must say that Chinmayi was a revelation. I've always had difficulties identifying Chinmayi's voice as she has the talent of modulating her voice texture and style according to the mood of each and every song of hers. While she was soulful in Oru Deivam (Kannathil Muthammittal) and angelic in En Uyir Thozhiye (Kangalal Kaithu Sei), here she seems to present a western-based singing. In fact, when I heard this song for the first time, I had mistaken Chinmayi's voice to Vasundhara Das'. A check on the credits revealed the truth. She sounds amazing! Coming back to the music arrangements, ARR has again surprised everyone with his choice of genre for a song such as this. The song basically expresses the lovers' dreams of their marriage. While most would have settled for a melody for such a situation, ARR decided to grant a peppy, foot-tapping number. And what an apposite choice that was. He effectively brought out the elation felt by the lovers in a vivacious manner, while the inclusion of the marriage tunes at the interludes provided a wonderful, jubilant feel to it.  3. Vinnaithandi Varuvaya I was pleasantly surprised that ARR used Karthik instead of Hariharan for this soothing number. This would have been a cake-walk for Hariharan who's a master in playing with the ragas. Nevertheless, I must say that Karthik has done a commendable job. In fact, full credits goes to ARR for using Karthik's voice in a very unconventional manner to such great effect. I got too greedy and at any cost wanted to get that sound in my film and went back on my commitment to the violin player and signed Rahman instead, which understandingly left the violin player in a very angry and a heartbroken state. The lyric writer pleaded with me not to do that to his friend and I said it is just a professional decision in the best interest of the film. I spoke to Rahman about the lyric writer and told him that his first song didn't work but I do believe that he is very good. Rahman said, If he is good enough for you he is good enough for me. Thus that lyric writer named Mehboob came into Rangeela minus the violin player and the first song he wrote was Tanha Tanha. I played that song to Maniratnam and he was mighty impressed with the fact that he hasn't heard a song since a long time which didn't have the words dil, deewana and sanam and signed on Mehboob for Bombay. With the super success of both Bombay and Rangeela Mehboob got a very big name and credibility and using that he recommended his closest friend the violin player to Sanjay Leela Bhansali who was looking for a new music director for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and thus was born Ismail Darbar. After the tremendous musical success of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam which also timed with a couple of Rahman albums not doing well including my own Daud Ismail Darbar was the new musical genius on the block. I called Ismail Darbar up to congratulate him and he didn't pick up my calls. Later on Ismail gave an interview where he said that now that he is a success, everybody is calling him including Ramgopal Varma. Hello Guys. Good Day! Do read through the entire post please and do comment! The reason why I felt I should put up this post is simple. Once you hear him sing, probably everyone would agree with me as well that Mr. Sujit Lal is definitely a beautiful find by the the judges in the show. Rahmanjii is always scouting for new talents on the horizon. I hope if Rahmanjii is reading this post; he would give Sujit an opportunity to sing for him. (or probably Gopal you could forward this to him) To give an insight of this person - He is so damn down to earth (he rarely opens his mouth except to sing ;)) and humble even after the superlative performances! (comparing to the others in the same show as well the other reality musical shows in Malayalam) And honestly, he is the main reason I watch the show Amrita Superstar 2!! It definitely is a wonderful soundtrack and that too for a debut album. But to say that it has never been toppled by ARR is definitely a debatable topic. Here's a thread. Leaving out every single album, I doubt if the Music connoisseurs CAN ignore Jodha Akbar! JA was a musical masterpiece. People who were then a lil unsure abt the grand music, definitely will understand the value it added in bringing out the aesthetics of each and every scene. A soundtrack that did justice not just to the movie but as well for the period it was set in, it still had a dimension that was way ahead of times. I strongly believe that JA has to be the strongest contender for soundtrack at the 2008 National Awards. Any thoughts to ponder? Gopal.. that was a gud find.. This Guy Taran Adarsh who calls himself a film critic, sometimes i do find his findings pathetic. Some very well made films have always sounded ordinary to him.. Some gud musical scores by our ARR has always been criticised by him. Swades for instance had gud music as well as was a well intentioned movie.. but it lost ground with him on both accounts.. He seems to prefer the usual rehashed stuff, be it music or movie.. I've always wondered wot still keeps him at the helm of the affairs in indiafm..
